Canadian Pair to Get Figure Skating Gold
Last Updated: February 15, 2002 12:28 PM ET SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - Canada's Jamie Sale and David Pelletier will be awarded a gold medal in the Olympics pairs figure skating, an International Olympic Committee sources told Reuters Friday. The Canadian duo finished second to Russians Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sukharulidz last Monday, sparking a storm of controversy. The source said the Russians would keep their gold medal. YAY!!!!!!! They deserved it. I see they suspended the French judge as well.
|
Too bad both groups get gold. Russia doesn't deserve it.
|
I was just about to post in the other topic when I saw this one - I am sooooooooooooo happy!!
|
Yaaaay! I'm so happy over that decision....and so are Sale and Pelletier! I saw NBC's simulcast of CBC's live interview with them and they were just beaming!!!
|
Glad to hear this - they deserve the gold. :)
|
woo hoo...
I'm glad the Olympic committee did the right thing. They really deserved the gold! :)
|
I'm glad that they will be given the gold that they deserve.

YAY! I am so happy for Sale and Pelletier!!!
And cash78mere is right, the Russians didn't do anything wrong, they skated their program the best they could that night-- it wasn't better than the Candians, but they had nothing to do with the judging, they just got caught in the middle. And its my understanding, that with the french judge's scores thrown out- it WAS a tie, 4 for each for 1st place. |
It is a shame that Polotics should play a role in something that is Supposed To Be Pure!:o
I watched that part and though What the Hell is going on:( While the Russian Pair did an outstanding Job, there was a flaw and it was very obouvis! Well we all know that there is and was a Problem! Dick Button who is older than dirt and me said from the start, it had to be for the rest of the world! Congratulations to the Canadians for a job well done!:D |
Yea!!! Did you hear Pellitier at the press conference say that he wanted a bronze so that he would have a complete set! :D
I think I heard that there would be a presentation of their medals before the ladies' competition next week..hope so!;) since I almost know all the words to Oh Canada b/c its close to my h.s. alma mater song. |
to quote the great don cherry...
"...we're gutless, we should have been up there, poundin' the table...two golds, who's kidding who, c'mon. Take the gold from the russians..." I heard from an interview with the russian pair that they accused Sale and Pelletier of being sore losers. Screw that, damn russians, they've had it in for us ever since we beat them in '72. Hope you enjoy your medals back in the 3rd world. |
Lil G, I can't believe they said that! That is so very unsportsmanlike. Now I don't know if it's true or not (not that I don't believe you, but you know the media...always distorting the truth and whatnot!) but if it is, what sore losers THEY are.
Never once did you see Sale and Pelletier say ANYTHING bad about the Russians (or anyone else!) They just wanted justice. They are so civilized and amazing...cause I know if I was them I would be screaming bloody murder, but they were calm about it all (well, in public anyway!) I don't think the Russians deserve to have the gold either! In no way did they earn it (they had an obvious fall!!!) and now they will have to live with the fact that they are not the true gold medal winners for the rest of their lives. I wish they'd just make them switch and give the Russians the silver, but I'm sure it won't happen!:( Ah well, everyone knows Canada is the true gold in pairs figure skating anyway!!!!:D:D Now, about hockey......aaarrgh! Currently: 5:1! What is going on?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! |
Were the athletes part of the scandal???
|
Hey Sisterplum - they really DID say that - the Russians are blaming NBC and the other media for fueling the controversey - you should have heard them on 'Today' this morning (funnily enough, they said this on 'CBS This Morning')
OptimistPrime - no, the athletes were not part of the scandal - but don't think they haven't been aware that this crap has been going on for years - there was just nothing that they could do about it. This just happens to be the first time the judges got caught with their pants around their knees ... ;) I couldn't be more proud of Jamie and David - the class and dignity that they have conducted themselves has made this whole country proud - gold, silver, or bronze!! At least we got our butts kicked in hockety in this round and not the medal round - what a horrid 2nd period ! |

...yeah well as shala said it's better to play horrid at the beginning...WHAT A DISGRACE! I couldn't believe what i was watching there, although left out in no-mans-land, cujo was terrible...no in fact every player on the team was brutal - brew, scotty, blake, fleury, iglina and peca.

BrooklineU, and others...
THE COLD WAR IS OVER!!! THE COMUNISTS ARE NOT TRYING TO TAKE AWAY ANYTHING FROM ANYBODY, BECAUSE IN RUSSIA, THEY DON'T EXIST ANYMORE....THEY TRIED TO COME BACK, YELTSIN CRUSHED THEM now....the medalisists from russia proably had no idea what was going on...They were awarded a medal and then everybody said "NO WE DON'T WANT TO BE THEM" it doesn't matter who gets it. The Olypics are suposed to be not political, but IRan was announced as part of the axis of evil. HOW MUCH MORE POLITICAL CAN YOU POSIBLY GET???? Jesus H f n christ. Let it go...we won the cold war...get over it. And as for IRan, they tried to be moderate and democratic a long time ago, but the US gave them the shah, then were suprised that they hated us. Now they are trying to be less extrimist but do we help the ones that got that hard fought victory...NO!!!! WE SAY SCREW YOU ARAB AND WE STILL DON'T HELP THEM...GUESS WHAT ELSE...MOST OF THE TERRORISTS WERE EUROPEAN. HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY JUSTIFY RACIAL PROFILLING....YOU BETTER PULL ME OVER BECAUSE THE ATTACKS WERE MOST LIKELY PURPRATATED BY A WHITE GUY...that is why i say that i don't try to be overly patriotic...i love my freedom..and what ever stands for that freedom...when something starts to not mean that freedom anymore...i cannot in good conscioucse supoort |
It would be interesting to see in the future if the Russian skaters move to the U.S. like many other former Olympians.
