Biggest Embarassment to Music

What bands/artists do you think were the biggest embarassments to music?!? The one that gets the biggest laugh from me is: Rico Suave (LMAO) Remember him!?!?!?!!!! EWWW!!!

ADPiSweety 02-12-2002 10:38 PM

Funny you should mention him LOL! A few weeks ago I was watching MTV and they had his song! I was laughing through the whole thing. His chorus got stuck in my head though =( lol Nice choice!

The1calledTKE 02-12-2002 11:27 PM

How could you forget milli vanilli ?

ADPiSweety 02-12-2002 11:30 PM

Yep!! Milli Vanilli too =) hehe.

Unregistered- 02-13-2002 12:01 AM

Never did like Vanilla Ice...never will.

I actually did like Milli Vanilli. My favorite was "Girl I'm gonna miss you..." even though it wasn't really them.

SparkliiQTMTSU 02-13-2002 02:10 AM

Vanilla Ice!! can we say lipsing?? lol oh and now we've got Britney Spears I mean shes a great preformer in my opinion just NO singing talent.

Nichole

SigmaChiGuy 02-13-2002 09:54 AM

Lauren Hill:

Anyone who says that she would rather have her children starve than have a white person buy her album, is not only an embarassment to music, but also a disgrace.

Outside of her, Right-Said-Fred was pretty bad.

ZTAngel 02-13-2002 10:03 AM

I will be flamed for this but I really don't care....
Britney

She's a great dancer...I'll give her that. But, as for a talented musician, she's absolutely horrible. She doesn't write her own songs (except for on her new album...and it sucks). And she cannot sing.

But, other than that, I think that Vanilla Ice was also an embarrassment.

ZetaLuvBunny 02-13-2002 11:34 AM

I agree about Britney. She's all dance and no sing. She's definitely an ACTRESS (a bad one at that) and not a SINGER, because she ACTS like she's SINGING. If you've ever heard her sing a-capella (without music), she sounds HORRIBLE. A dying CAT can sing better than her! LOL. I don't understand why dancing is made such a big deal these days in SINGING performances. Of course it's wonderful if you can dance (I can't!), but it's not fair to people who CAN SING well (I can hehehe), because you CAN't fake dancing like you can singing.

Anyway Britney seems extremely stuck-up. We need to hear more real talent like Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, Michelle Branch, and others who write AND sing their own songs (as well as play instruments). MTV has gone further and further down the tubes as most of the FEW music videos it does show anymore are of pre-fabricated, bad or non-singing, choreographed "music artists". Some people don't realize how much talent it takes to write a really good song, and to know how to actually READ MUSIC.

I started cracking up in the middle of the computer lab. How embarrassing! :o
Thank you ZetaLuvBunny for making my day with that comment. :D

WRONG!

That quote is always taken out of context.

What I believe she was referring to when she said that was not whites buying her album, but changing her sound/image/politics to please a white or more mainstream audience. She was saying she wouldn't compromise her integrity.

h2oot 02-13-2002 11:48 AM

I'm not a huge Britney fan either. She needs to upgrade her act. However, its not fair to critcize her cuz she doesn't write her own music. A good singer does not have to write their stuff to be good...did Frank Sinatra?

Do you have a reference for this, SigmaChiGuy? It's not that I don't believe you, but I'd like to see this in print/on video to confirm.

SoTrue1920 02-13-2002 12:05 PM

B4-4: A Canadian boy band. Blech!

Celine Dion: my ears bleed whenever I hear her.

Mariah Carey: as soon as she became a hoochie mama, she lost all credibility in my book

Rush: my husband loves them, but to me they sound like cats in a blender. :D

Steeltrap 02-13-2002 12:07 PM

Noodlin' on a soprano sax

Kenny G -- why in the world is this man considered a "jazz" artist? He does not improvise, which is a key requirement for any real jazz performer. It's a shame that that man outsells real jazz musicians.

h2oot -- You're correct on your correlation about singers and material. This is especially true of jazz/adult standards performers, such as Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.

Before the rise of the singer-songwriters in the 1960s and beyond, it wasn't that common for performers to write their own songs. :)

PKTSU01 02-13-2002 01:08 PM

Hmmm...

Michael Jackson...I'm talking about the MJ of the last 10 -15 years, anything with the J5 up till the Bad album was badass, but since his whole kiddie scandal, he's been a joke.

New Kids on the Block... It's because of them we have all of these no talent boy "bands", corporate shlock at its finest. They and their producers figured out that if you can corner the market and get teen girls all riled up, you've got a hit. Smart business, shit music.

Vanilla Ice...So what if he's a goof, EVERYONE at least kids my age at the time, knew the words to ice ice baby, its just that no one will admit it now.

Pretty much all of the Puffy/Master P/Russell Simmons wanna bes with their horrendus music/lyrics/clothing lines. IT's just really, really bad stuff.

ANY rockers who stil llive back in the grunge days of being pissed off at everyone and everything, even the people that buy your records, make your rich and able to support a family. The singer of Staind is a perfect example. Very talented, good band, but honestly, you've got a good marraige, a new baby, your health, and more cash than you know what to do with. Yeah, sounds like a big F*$)(N problem to me!

Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston were great, now are a weekly tabloid story waiting to happen.

MC Hammer, mainly sad because he is talented, but was wayyy too nice to people that didn't give a crap about him or where he would end up. All of his image changing makes him look bad, no one's buying him as a gangster rapper, he should stick with his flashy style.

The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Remaining Led Zeppelin members. Yes, you were great, like a few decades ago, no one wants to see 50 -60 year old grandfathers in leather pants, no matter how cool they think they are.

Aging Mick Jagger and Keith Richards rolling around in tight leather pants is not a pretty image, to say the least.

This 9-yr-old lil punk was like "Yeah all the chicks dig me like Aaron, and my daddy's buying me a platinum chain with a big medal on it for Easter." Bull$hit little kid! If your daddy could afford a platinum chain, I'd be getting paid more than $6.50 an hour to babysit your snotty @$$. LOL! I wish those 12-yr-old girls could see Aaron Carter from OUR persective! His songs are CORNY as a Nebraska and CHEESY as Wisconsin. LOL. Makes me want to <gag> every time I flip through the channels and see one of his corny videos on.

The pure CRAP that they are inflicting on us through the very young that we are obliged to babysit is appalling! Have any of you had the distinct displeasuere of catching these min-boy bands and pop princesses on Nickelodeon? It's soooo disturbing to see a bunch of prepubescents jumping up and down trying to be "the sexy one".

Ugh.

Boy bands- not always a bad thing. The Beatles were a boy band, as were the temptations, the four tops and the beach boys. BUT the mass commercialization and non-musical nature of today's groups has sucked all life out of the idea.

No, "disturbing" is going to a concert and watching little 12 years olds singing the sexy songs of some of theses artists. (Think Jordan Knight's "Give It To You" or ANY O-town song)!!!

Re: ROTFLMAO!!!

CTFU (I like that abbreviation!) I remember my freshman year at A&M in the door room and watching Rico's video at 2 in the morning-ahhh brings back memories.

When these kids get older they will realize just as I have now realized that New Kids on the Block (though I like Donny Wahlburg) are just puppatiers-used to make money for the music companies -maybe some of them do have talent but I sure don't see that now.

ok I know I am going to get flack for this one BUT I CAN'T STAND Willie Nelson-ughhhhhhhhhhhh he has a horrible voice-blah, to overrated (I said that to my friends last night and I think they were just about to maul me)

How can you not like Celine Dion, she was great for Kareoke. Mariah Carey I agree with, but I have to disagree with Rush. Sure they guy's voice sounded like the chipmunk, but they are a great musicians.

I would have to say, any and all Piff Daddy or Puff Daddy or Power Puff or what ever his name is now. He ruins more great songs and me makes me sick.

almost forgot, those 80s NFL rap music. You know, the SUperbowl Shuffle.

Hanson...

Right Said Fred. they were the two Enlish guys with the shaved heads that did that song "On the Catwalk"

up, because the current form that is Mariah Carey should be in here. Especially the way she butchered that Def Leppard's classic.

ETA: I just read what I wrote and it did not make sense.

PhiPsiRuss 12-18-2003 04:10 PM

Britney Spears deserves another mention.
