2002 Baseball Season!!
OK, so I know baseball season doesn't officially start until April...but what the heck, I've gone too long without talking about baseball!! :D
Have a question for you guys...do you think the Giants have made good moves in the off-season? Ahem, Ex Greek, this post is supposed to get you out of your "GC retirement" and into posting again! :D  |
I think the Giants look pretty good. I still think Arizona looks the best especially their pitchers. The Yankees I am not sure about they have done alot of moving around but should still be contenders. All I have to say is go Boston Red Sox!

The AL east I would give the edge to the Yankees but Boston not far behind maybe a wildcard.
The AL central maybe the Indians that entire division sucks. The AL west the Mariners they still look strong and if they don't face the Yankess in the playoffs will make it to the Series. The NL east I think the Mets might look pretty good this year and will edge out the Braves. The NL central I would have to go with the Cards they are a good team even without McGuire. The NL west the Diamondbacks will dominate. San Fran and the Braves will fight for the wildcard. |
As a Yankees fan, I will attempt to suspend my favoritism, but...
THe Yanks are still the team to beat - they have at least 6 legit starting pitchers, and their lineup is unreal. From 1-9, they're stacked, and Derek Jeter has always been good in the lead-off spot, so that could be an even better help. If Rondell White stays healthy, he could have a monster season. Even some of the minor free agents they picked up, like Ron Coomer, could help. The Mariners lost Aaron Sele, in what may be a bigger loss than they think. In the National League - the Mets/Braves race could be really good. Depending on how Mo Vaughn plays, the Mets lineup could be straight nasty, while the Braves are still tough. The Diamondbacks may be getting too old, although I will never count out a team with Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling in the rotation. The Giants are going to be solid again, although losing Estes hurts. I'm still cracked out from Mardi Gras, I'll post more later when I feel complete. Collin |

I can't wait! The Mets are looking damn good after all the awesome trades they made and I'm looking forward to them not sucking this year. ;) I LOVE the Mets and always will, and I hope they make me proud this season! :D

My lovable Chi. Cubs
Even though my lovable Cubbies have had more downs than ups, it would be so great for them to do well for an ENTIRE season. Granted the talent is lying elsewhere, like the Mets and Yankees, so the chance is looking tiny...again.

AL -
East - gotta be the yankees . . . these clowns keep adding, and almost never seem to subtract. By far the best squad in baseball on paper. After that, Boston, the Jays, the O's, then the D-Rays (although they may be better than we think) Central - Minnesota? Sure, why not - pitching, plus if two guys break out they'll have a nasty year (and possibly stave off contraction . . . ). Then the Sox, Indians, detroit, and KC West - gotta be the A's, even w/out Giambi, if they can score runs . . . I don't think the M's are as good as their record last year, esp not now . . . the Angels will surprise, but the "new" Rangers experiment will fall flat as all hell. NL - East - BRAVOS! The Mets will pull a Texas and pitch their way to underachieving, although they may pull a wildcard. The Phils are close, as are the Marlins . . . the Expos still suck. Central - I like the Cubs - if young players develop into even mediocre players, and they get some young pitchers up, they'll contend. The Cards are sick, too, and the Astros have some arms . . . but they still play in the bandbox. The rest will fall away early West - Watch out for the Pads! And remember, the important parts of the DBacks team is still there . . . but even older, although they get back prinze and mantei. Doesn't matter if you never get ahead though . . . SF needs to have a sick season from some other players, b/c Bonds probably won't have the best hitting performance in history again. The Dodgers are still the Dodgers, but the payroll-trimming of the Rockies will hurt them a lot. |
I'm still gonna support and root for the St. Louis Cardinals! I loved them and think they're the bomb! Hopefully this will be there year!

im going to go and agree with zntke, Go Red Sox!!! theyre my favorite baseball team!

What one baseball star may do off the field
Unbelievable story. Palmeiro is the same age as I am...I didn't think that Viagra was supposed to be used prior to age 40. :p
ESPN.com: Sports Business Wednesday, February 20, 2002 Updated: February 21, 10:07 AM ET Palmeiro will endorse, but will he use? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Darren Rovell ESPN.com What do Rafael Palmeiro and Bob Dole have in common? Viagra. Palmeiro, the 37-year-old Texas Rangers first baseman/designated hitter, is close to finalizing an endorsement deal that will make him the first active athlete among the four major sports to serve as a spokesman for the drug that helps correct erectile dysfunction in men. Rafael Palmeiro could become the new face of Viagra. Palmiero's agent, Fernando Cuza, told Sports Business Journal that his client "does not suffer from this problem." But when contacted by ESPN.com, Cuza declined to elaborate. Palmeiro reportedly is scheduled to appear in advertising for the drug, which will begin a three-year sponsorship deal with Major League Baseball this season. However, neither deal has been finalized yet, said Geoff Cook, spokesman for Pfizer, which manufactures and distributes the drug. Some question the relevance of Palmeiro, assuming he doesn't need the product. "The medical profession frowns upon the drug being used as an enhancement for people with otherwise normal functions in their sex life," said Frank Vuono, founder of 16W Marketing, a sports marketing firm. "With the association, the implication would seem to be that (Palmeiro) would take the drug even if he doesn't have a problem. Pfizer, as a regulated company, obviously has to be careful about the communication, and I'm sure they will be." While athletes don't have to use the products they endorse -- remember Joe Namath and Beautymist pantyhose, and Steve Garvey and the Fat Trapper -- the appeal of the product likely would be enhanced if the endorser could vouch for its benefits through firsthand experience. "The best endorser might be some athlete or former athlete who is still relatively young who would be secure enough to say, 'I'm 45, but I use the product legitimately,' " Vuono said. Palmeiro's endorsement could make for easy fodder on late-night talk shows, as it did when Dole began pitching the product. "(Palmeiro) better give me some free samples," ESPN Radio's Rob Dibble said on The Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday afternoon. Pfizer and Viagra have been the main sponsor of NASCAR driver Mark Martin's Winston Cup race car since last year. While the campaign is meant to increase the visibility of the drug, Martin talks about the company's initiative to get men to get frequent checkups, instead of his personal use of the drug. So far, Pfizer has given 50,000 free exams to men at a mobile screening unit that travels to each Winston Cup race, Cook said. The drug has been used by 10 million men in the United States since its inception in April 1998, Pfizer says. The company says the dysfunction, in some degree, affects about half of U.S. men from ages 40 to 70. just got tix to a cubs v cards game come june at wrigley stadium. of course I am still rooting for my cards, but I got a dirty look wearing my jd drew cards shirt working out in a chicago area gym! its funny how chicagoans love their sports, and cards, rams and blues are dirty words here.
oh, ankiel looks good so far, we'll see if he comes back ... |
I am all about the Yanks as always. I am die hard yank fan and they got some new players, so hopefully, they will pull it this yr, this past season was upsetting but , we always pull through year after year( knock on wood)
Good Luck ~ DGP~Honey |

If Ankiel doesn't make it back pitching, I say throw him in the outfield. He is a solid hitter, and you know he'll have a good arm in the outfield. Collin |
Yankies in the fifth. Take the series yet again.
|
Texas isn't looking so good this year. Not only do they have every troublemaker in baseball on their team, pay rod and a few others have been getting frustrated.
It's still the yankees series to lose but san fran looks good this year. The indians have been on fire but how long will that last? |
I know, I can't believe Cleveland is 11-0 right now!
As for my Mets, yes they may currently be #1 in the NL East right now (not like it matters after only 12 games anyway), they have seriously disappointed me with their errors so far. I can't even believe it! Just a few years ago, they had the least errors in the majors, and now they have the most! I don't know what's wrong with Ray Ordonez... he's been making a LOT of errors lately, and that is SO out of character for him! |
YAY INDIANS!! :D
|
Hmmph, the Boston Red Sox had NO pulse over this weekend, letting the Dbacks stomp all over them.
And couldn't there be a rule implemented over how many intentional walks can be given to one player in one game? Clemens wanted no part of Bonds, except to hit him on the elbow too... FIVE walks to Bonds in one game is just over the top -- with three intentional ones, too. Of course, the other two were unintentional-intentional. Oh, and what the hell is wrong with Clemens? He's seriously demented or something...wanting to hit every good ballplayer out there... |
Boston was disappointing agaisnt Arizona. Arizona's pitching is the only one that rivals Boston's so it makes sence. I mean Boston has beaten the second best team in baseball(Yankess) 7 out of 11 games so far so Boston isn't all that bad. I have much respect for the D-backs after the Series.

Thoughts
Not a particular Sox fan, but Pete Mondesi pitched his little booty off, and lost to Curt Schilling.
Am a Janqui fan, however. If I was Dusty "Lizard Eater" Baker, I wouldn't call Roger Clemens out like that. Roger turns 40 later this year, and is pretty cut for a man that age.:p Meanwhile, I hate to say it, but I want to read Jose Canseco's book if it ever comes out. |

Last season, waaaaay more than 50% of his RBI were himself - think about that, then you decide the right decision. Quote:
Drilling Piazza was a joke - you don't hit people in the head, no matter what. But - if you look at the pitch that hit Bonds, it wasn't far from being a strike at all. If Barry wants to put on the armor and lean over the plate, he's gonna get popped sometimes - think of it as the price you pay for leaning over the plate, risk/reward vs. his 73 HRs last season. BTW - I'm a big proponent of Clemens in the Hall wearing the Blue Jays cap - that would be sweet, screw that guy |
Any ASTROS fans??? I AM! (eventhough they aren't playing their best) :p
Ronnie :D |
The poor Astros. Astro the Jetson's dog is more famous than the Houston Astro's. lol

Car, being the big Barry fan I know you are, here's an article I just read which you might be interested in reading:
Talking Baseball: Bonds talks about Yanks, steroids issue June 11, 2002 By Ed Randall SportsTicker Contributing Editor NEW YORK (TICKER) -- Barry Bonds believed he was going to be a member of the New York Yankees 10 years ago when he became a free agent after playing with the Pittsburgh Pirates. "They were the first team to talk to me. But George (Steinbrenner) was suspended from baseball," Bonds said. "I think if George had anything to do with it, I would have probably have been a Yankee at the time." Bonds addressed numerous subjects when I interviewed him on Saturday, including the reported use of steroids by major league players. "If you're gonna point fingers, point the fingers at the right people and not the rest of us," Bonds said. "Two other players came out about an issue and now it's trickling down to everybody else and that part I feel is just not right. And I always seem to be the guy right at the top of the list. "Unfortunately, I think that's really cruddy because I think I worked really hard to change a lot of things. I think I worked really hard to embrace the public a little bit more as well as the public embracing me last year. It just seems like they're kicking me in the tooth again. But that's OK. I've been kicked at before and I'm OK with it." Bonds on performance enhancers: "You're gonna take advantage of what's legal. Some people are going to cheat. Society cheats every day. I'm not going to say that I don't take vitamins. I'm not going to say that I don't take protein drinks and shakes and things like that because I do. These kids in today's era are a lot bigger, a lot stronger, a lot faster and if you can't keep up, you're going to be retired. You have to do what you need to do to keep up with a lot of kids. You just want to do it fairly." On how important it is for him to be embraced like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa: "I don't know because with me it's always something. I'm a bad guy from the beginning. I set the record in home runs and all of a sudden that year I'm a nice person. Now this year it's the big steroid issue. I can't win period. I don't think about it. I feel that I am embraced a lot more so than I have ever been and I'm very appreciative of that. I go to stadiums and there's a lot more cheers overriding boos nowadays than there was earlier in my career and that's very gratifying to me." ... |

I am just so happy that he will retire a San Francisco Giant! He is just one of the best baseball players ever (if not the best of the best), and I am just so proud he is a Bay Area boy :D. |

I can't wait for the trade season to come around. I want some new bats! I love Jeff Kent and J.T. Snow, but they just aren't doing their jobs (though Kent's doing better as of late...while J.T.'s only batting .210). I definitely don't want to see them traded or anything, but I want to see a new cleanup guy and also bump J.T. back in the batting order. Clemens is a dickhead. Remember how he said in the papers that he would be testing out Barry's armor or something like that? Well, when he says stuff like that, and then the pitch hits him, well I doubt that it was just an accident! What a way for Clemens to show Barry that he's Hall of Fame material  , when he won't even throw a single strike to him. Ah well, there'll probably be another matchup between the two in the All-Star Game and hopefully we'll see Barry get a strike! |
I have to say that I am a NEW Baseball fan, but have become addicted. Basball tonight...cannot go to bed w/o watching it!
I live close to Durham, NC and have been going to the D. Bulls games. I enjoyed watching them....and some of the players, I have to say, look so good in pin stripes! 2 of our favorites were called up to Devil Rays 2 weeks ago Paul Hoover and Aubrey Huff, Toby Hall and Tenyner(sp) were called down...saw them play Sunday....fun times. Trying to replace our favs that are no longer with us... The stanley cup was at the game...got to see a 109 yr old trophy! |

The Giants' pitching has been awesome, though. |

I mean, goodness, if we don't win a World Series this year, WHEN will we?? I'm running out of patience here! Last year was supposed to be THE year for us, but it didn't turn out to be it. Scott Rolen would be awesome. David Bell has been OK for us...but we deifnitely need more pop then that. Shinjo -- I love the guy, but he was doing so poorly as leadoff that he bats 7th regularly now! Ahh, do I envy the payrolls of the Yanks, the Dodgers, the Braves, etc. etc..... |
What are the Braves doing this season? I know last year they had alot of problems.
