Girl Scout Cookies
I know there was a thread about the similarities of GSA and sororities, but someone mentioned Girl Scout Cookies in another thread and I thought I'd bring this up.
What's you favorite Girl Scout Cookie? My little was is GSA through high school, and now that she teaches elementary school art, she and one of the student's mothers have started a troop. So last Wed. I get a call at work "So, did you want to buy some Girl Scout Cookies? 'Cause I have to turn the form in today." I was like "Thank god you called, I would have been ticked if I hadn't gotten any girl scout cookies!" ;) I got 3 kinds: Somas, Tag Alongs & Thin Mints. To answer my question, Somaos are my favorite, but Tag Alongs a close second! Does anyone know where they come up with the names of the cookies? My little showed me the "new" cookie, called "Ole Ole", which has macadamia nuts or something in it and powdered sugar coating. (I wouldn't have named it Ole Ole myself). And I've always wondered why tag alongs got that name? I do know that the names, and even the available types of cookies, vary by region (so one of you might read this and say to yourself, what the heck's a Somao?). Just an interesting fact. And I feel sorry for any of you who don't know the joy of girl scout somao cookies! :p |
They're called Samoas!:) I don't know if it's because there's coconut in them or because they taste like our favorite Girl Scout dessert, S'mores!!!
|
Samoas!! :) theyre the best!! :) My sister just got hers in today and I have like 5 boxes :) lol I love those cookies!!
Nichole |
I love Thin Mints!:D
|
My troop was selling Scout cookies in front of Walmart a couple of years ago and this woman walked up, bought a box of Samoas, sat down, and--I swear--ate every cookie in the box. She said, "I deserved that," and walked off.
|
Okay...that's kinda sick carnation...that lady must have some serious issues with food.
I love GS cookies. I cannot wait to buy some in front of the grocery store as soon as they are out there, because no girls came to my house this year. |
Oooh, is it getting to be that time???
My favorite is by far the Tagalongs and I'm not ashamed to say that I hide them because my husband and kids couldn't POSSIBLY appreciate them as much as I do! |
Trefoils - I can eat a box at one sitting.
|
 Yiii, 33! The trefoil box has a ton of cookies!
This is so good: have you ever made chocolate pudding with trefoils in it, the way you put wafers in banana pudding?:) :) :) |
I love Samoas too...of course I'd like the "worst" kinda-- the one with the most fat content! :) lol. Thin mints are great too!
|
I love Somoas.. but I wish they'd put more in the box.. I also get thin mints.. because they are great, and there are a ton in each one!
|
we still have an UNOPENED box of samoas sitting in our pantry from last year!!! my mom LOVES those, i just dont know why she never opened them.
I have a couple of favorite GS cookies but i dont know their names. Which are the tagalongs? Until a couple of years ago i always thought the shortbread cookies were the most boring and tasteless ones of all, until i actually tried them ;) they are soo yummy, so i like those, and there are others that i cant think of right now. |
I love all of them~ lol!
But if I had to pick, I'd choose Thin Mints and Carmel Delights tied. I have always loved the Thin Mints because they are so refreshing. I especially like to crumble them onto a bowl of vanilla ice cream! I love the Carmel Delights too because they're just sinful! My mom never let us touch them and then one day I did and I found out why! SO GOOD! Hootie |
Thin mints....YUM :D
|
I've always wondered how they got the names for the cookies... I mean, SAMOAS??
I remember selling GS cookies when I was little...the trick is to set up shop near an ATM... ppl who have just withdrawn money from their bank feel guilty about not buying...so they buy! What sucks is that now I'm one of those ppl that get suckered into buying them. My freezer's stocked up with Thin Mints now. |
I love dos-i-dos (sp?)!!!
I liked the ones last year that were shaped like apples and had cinnamon and sugar on top-but I can't get them this year:( |
Samoas and Thin Mints are AWESOME!

In trying to find the answer to this question, I found some interesting figures on which cookies are most popular. This is from the Girl Scout website: What are the best-selling Girl Scout cookies? A: Our biggest sellers are: * Thin Mints -- 26 % * Samoas®/Caramel deLites™-- 19% * Peanut Butter Patties®/Tagalongs® -- 13% * Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos™ -- 12% * Shortbread/Trefoils -- 11% * The other varieties combined account for the remaining 19%. Trefoils are the oldest Girl Scout cookie. |
Ok, so.....
The girl scouts don't sell they're cookies at the groceries stores around UCF. Something about poor college students.... So, I called my mom and asked her to get me a box of Tagalongs, Thin Mints, and Samoas (which are all my favs). She had them sitting in the pantry waiting for me for when I go back home next weekend. But (gasp!) my sister and father found the stash and finished all my cookies in ONE DAY!!!!! So, this year, I don't get to eat the yummy girl scout cookies. I just can't believe they're $3 a box. I'm pretty sure they were only $1.50 when I sold them (I was a Brownie and a Junior :) ). |
I think they are a big ripoff and its a totally annoying that two months a year I cant go to the bank , post office, grocery story, dept store, or anywhere without having a bunch of 8 year old girls bug me to buy cookies.
PS.. The wall st journal did a story a on girl scout cookies and almost none of the money actually goes to the girls. Why doesnt the Girl Scouts of America just sell the cookies to the supermarkets the way Keebler and Nabisco do it? Its stupid to have parents stand outside of a supermarket every weekend selling cookies when the cookies could just be on the shelves. |

The Girl Scout troops do get a percentage of sales, but I don't think it's very high.
I do buy from people at work whose daughters are Girl Scouts (particularly if the person in question is my boss ;) ) but other than that - I'd rather make a charitable contribution where 100% of my contribution goes to a good cause. |
I have to say thin mints are my favorities. They are so goood with penut butter.
This was editied to not make me look like a fat ass. |

My godmother (a truely brilliant woman) would buy a case or two and give them to her friends or coworkers on holidays/birthdays. the perfect gift for soemone you want to remember, but dont wanna drop serious cash on. I also believe their value increases as the year wears on... |
mmmmm...Thin Mints in the freezer...eat them while they're cold...yummmm...
(just a little daydreaming) Can't find any damn Girl Scouts this year. Where the heck are the little urchins hiding? Just because we're a college town doesn't mean we won't buy cookies! I mean, heck, look at all the crap college students eat/drink/smoke/ingest/etc. on a daily basis. We're not going to turn our noses up at cute little chocolate cookies. OTW, you should sell your extra boxes on Ebay in about a month or so - you'd make some serious $$$, I'd expect! If not, I'd be happy to send you MY address, and you can donate to the "Poor Law Student Needs Chocolate" Foundation. :D We're working on getting tax exempt status. ;) |

G8RAlphaXi--Cash is pretty low these days..selling em on eBay sounds like a great idea!!! |
Tagalongs and the Shortbread cookies are my favorites.
Side Note Story: During rush this spring I was at XYZ’s function just hanging out when one of the girls there that I assumed was in a sorority since we had not been properly introduced sits down with her boyfriend on an opposite couch from me talking about how she forgot to bring the order form for the cookies. Looking to make conversation I ask if it is a fundraiser and she says yes, she is selling Girl Scout cookies. So I ask if she is helping out her little sister by selling cookies to some of the fraternities and she goes no I am in the Girl Scouts. The look the boyfriend gave me was classic and there was a bit of tension in the air the rest of the time I was there. |
Hey Lifesaver or OTW,
If you guys are willing to part with a box or two (or 3 or 4 or 12) of Thin Mints, I would gladly take them off your hands. :D I have not seen any Girls Scouts around so I might have to go without my Thin Mints this year. So sad:( :D |
Tag-a-longs rock. Too bad I don't know any girl scouts this year...
|
I could live on Thin Mints, but then I'd get to big to get off my couch!
|
Tag Alongs
and FROZEN Thin Mints :) |
Tagalongs and Samoas - no contest. My sister was going to do the Girl Scout thing, but stopped very quickly. However, she was doing it long enough for my family to load up on those cookies.

Okay well all this talk about Girl Scout cookies is making me crave some. Does anyone know when they will be out in front the stores selling them? I havent seen any around lately!
|
I had forgotten to order my box of Samoas from some parent in my office, but I picked up a box of Ole Ole and Samoas from girl scouts at the local strip mall. Luckily my husband picked up a box of thin mints, which we opened tonight. My cookies are in the freezer, hopefully to stay there for a few months.
|
My Fave girl scout cookies are the peanut butter ones and the chocolate mint. =) WIsh I knew a girl scout to buy them from.
|
I am making a 120 mile round trip to London this weekend, to pick up my annual supply of Thin Mints. I will freeze all 6 boxes and ration them out to myself carefully, preferably eating them straight out of the freezer with a glass of milk. Yes, I know it is absolutely pathetic.
Thank God the Girl Scouts have a troop here in England!! :D :D :D :D |
Man, I miss Girl Scout cookies! I love Somoas! However, Thin Mints in the freezer are quite delicious!
|
I have a fundamental objection to putting little girls out on the street to peddle overpriced cookies "for their troop" when the troop gets at most 10% of the procedes.
When I was a girl scout, boxes cost $2.50 for about 10 cookies. Our troop got about .25 per box. My mom knew better than to let me go door to door, but some parents sent their 7, 8, 10 year old girls door to door for that kind of pocket change. I'm sure that somewhere, there is an old man or woman that is getting very very rich by taking advantage of these girls, who just want to help their troop by selling cookies. Instead, though, they are lining the pockets of someone essentially utilizing sweat-shop type labor. It makes me sick just to think about it. |
I have never had an AMERICAN GIRL SCOUT COOKIE EVER! Boo Hoo!
I have had Canadian Girl Guide Cookies, but not the American Girl Scout Cookies! I feel like I am missing out! http://www.plaudersmilies.de/bawling.gif
Here is the Canadian ones, if you're interested: http://www.girlguides.ca/clipart/Gal...ie/COOKIE2.jpg and http://www.girlguides.ca/clipart/Gal...oxfront_hr.jpg Note the bilingual labeling with English and "Francais"...oui oui!! ;) |
