Penn State KDR suspended - partially nude photos in Facebook group

Quote:

A fraternity at Pennsylvania State University has been suspended after two private Facebook pages containing pictures of partially naked women were discovered, police said.

Several members of the university’s chapter of Kappa Delta Rho are accused of taking the pictures of the women when they were sleeping or passed out and posting them to the private Facebook page "Covert Business Transactions,” according to a search warrant obtained by NBC-affiliate*WJAC. Pictures on the page also included drug sales and hazing.
So stupid.. and sad.

Not a good plan especially when their national office is just a few hours away in Greensburg.

Good grief. Just dumb.

It's on CBS This Morning right now, and they're tying in Sigma Chi at Houston and, I'd course, SAE at Oklahoma.

March has not been a good month for fraternities.

Sciencewoman 03-18-2015 08:58 AM

And the Today Show...they showed bus footage again from Oklahoma. They did include an interview clip from a woman with expertise on campus sexual assaults and harassment who felt that moving forward, these negative incidents would lead to positive changes.

Kevin 03-18-2015 10:23 AM

How is it responsible to continue to show the OU SAE footage when this is a completely unrelated, isolated incident??

I'm not sure what "positive changes" this could lead to other than that this group will probably be disbanded... and rightfully so.

Since when is the Today show more about responsibility than ratings? From a capatalist standpoint, it may be irresponsible to not show footage that increases their media visibility. If the story is still hot, they may as well use it.

AZTheta 03-18-2015 11:23 AM

I don't get it. The Internet is for porn, right?

And if the story is about racist, sexist, out-of-control fraternities . . . .

Kevin 03-18-2015 11:41 AM

Two chapters out of thousands had problems this Spring (so far).

That should be our response to this--that the vast majority of our chapters are law abiding organizations which are helping to prepare America's future leaders.

I saw a quote on Facebook that said something along the lines of how it must suck to be directly affected by the media's portrayal of a small percentage of your community that are probably nothing like you.

Yep, that.

I meant to quote Kevin, not MC, but whatevs.

Yep indeed.

Kevin, with all due respect, the Colonies thread is full of mostly (but not all) fraternity chapters being closed for a variety of risk management issues. There is a serious problem.

What are they doing to actively work against racism, sexism, etc? I don't recall EVER seeing an NPC/IFC group with serious programming on these issues, beyond superficially covering date rape.

I can only speak to Sigma Nu, and yes, we cover this more than superficially.

Our philanthropy, Building Strong Girls, is heavily focused on building resilient, confident girls who will grow up to be resilient, confident women. Combining that with chapter programming, I think we heavily address sexism. I think we could definitely increase and expand programming that has a focus on combating racism and other areas of discrimination.

Frankly, though, the members of the chapter I advise are pretty enlightened and they could probably teach the alumnae.

An anonymous KDR brother was quoted in a local newspaper trying to defend the actions of his brothers by saying:

"The fire of indignant, misplaced self-righteousness that looks to ruin people’s lives and unjustly ruin reputations is the abuse and violation that should be at the center of discussion, not the humorous, albeit possibly misguided, antics of a bunch of college kids.”

So, taking pictures of women half-naked and in compromising positions is not humorous and misguided antics of a bunch of college kids. It's something a rapist would defend. I sincerely hope that Penn State does the right thing and chooses to expel all of the brothers who posted pictures on that private FB page. Not every fraternity does that. I know I am preaching to the choir but, I can say that there are decent fraternity men at Penn State.

Reportedly, women whose pictures were allegedly posted by Kappa Delta Rho are not cooperating with prosecutors’ efforts to bring charges -- see:

http://www.gazetteherald.com/women-i...ce-say/122539/

Some of the reluctance may be due to a desire to avoid having to participate in a trial, or to be identified in connection with embarrassing photos.

A lawsuit was filed June 8 against Penn State University, the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity, and others. The suit alleges, among other things, that the university ignored hazing practices.
“ Penn State University officials said they “strongly dispute” Vivenzio’s claim . . . .”

Another report says that Kappa Delta Rho has expelled 38 men from its (now closed) Penn State chapter:
