2015 UGA Recruitment
Hello everyone! Due to the immense amount of knowledge and advice on this site, I feel pretty up to speed about the requirements and expectations for fall recruitment, but was left with a few questions (some of which are UGA specific, others not!). I am in the process of compiling my recommendation packets and was wondering if there was a preferred time to distribute them? Are black dresses the norm for pref round at UGA? Since UGA is a rather competitive school academically, at least in my opinion, any tips to stand out in from a pool of girls in which most have 4.0s and are extremely talented, smart, well rounded young ladies? Any other specific University of Georgia advice or advice in general? I appreciate any and all advice, thank y'all in advance! :)

UGA Sophomore here -
Distribute your packets late Spring semester and try to have them sent in by your rec writers by early summer (June). Yes - black dresses are the norm for prefs. If you know any girls who are already in sororities at UGA, let them know that you are going through recruitment and that you are open-minded (which I hope you are) and excited about getting a bid! Work on conversation skills so you don't struggle especially during the early rounds when everyone talks about the same sort of things. Be the girl who is easy and fun to talk to not the one with the dead end answers. Show off your fun, happy self, but don't do anything to call attention to yourself in weird way. You don't want to be "The Girl with the ..... (strange hat, cat purse, denim jumpsuit...) You get it. Most important - have fun. It shows. |

Or the girl all in orange and purple. |
What's wrong with my denim jumpsuit! Oh, wait...
Go with what Confetti said. It was well-stated. |
What, no pink sequinned fishnet pantyhose?
|
I don't think a denim jumpsuit is wrong if it's acid washed.

Note to PNMs: we love your school spirit but please don't actually do this on any day other than gameday |
Twin #1 is going to UGA and we are getting her packets together. We have contacted all the sorority women we know and only have a few houses where we need to locate people to write Recs. Our final transcript is not ready until early June, do we wait for that to send out the packets or do we start with the 7 semester transcript?
|
Send what you have. As for the recs you are missing, have you asked the ones you alrady have lined up if they know anyone in those groups? Have you checked the national web sites to see if they have an alum group in your town?
|
I would follow confetticupcake's advice. She is a current member is a UGA sorority. And Titchou's too!

Ask some of the seniors if they ever heard the story about "Sparkles". ;) |
I'm also a sophomore at UGA. Something else you could do is to follow the sororities on social media. I know for my sorority we look at the girls that are following us beforehand because it shows interest in our sorority. So those girls already have our attention before rush even starts. However, only do this if your profiles are clean. If not it could end up hurting you. Also, go in with an open mind about every sorority and rush in general. The girls that had the most houses to return to were girls who had a really carefree attitude. If they didn't get invited back to certain houses or if they were to get released they were totally okay with it. If you're stressed out and trying to be perfect, it shows. Remember ALL of the 17 sororities at UGA are perfect and it's really just a personality difference between them. If those aren't for you then DPhiE is colonizing after formal recruitment. From being on the other side I can promise you we are just as nervous as you are. We've been preparing since January, and we are SO excited to meet all of you!!

Sparkles
Sparkles, much like another GreekChat legend, went through rush my sophomore or junior year at UGA. She was rather pale, had super blonde hair, kinda not very skinny ( Okay FINE she was a little chubby), and wore head to toe pink - including a matching glittery pink purse. I can't remember but I think there was some other glitteriness somewhere else on her outfit and pigtails (I may be making that up about the pigtails but this is what I remember in my head when I think of her). She was also socially awkward and way too excited about rush, like annoyingly excited. Later in the semester we saw her at a Greek week event, doing one of those rock climbing wall things. She was wearing a skirt. A short skirt...and it was not pretty. I remember seeing her letters and thinking, "oh, that's fitting."
{end mean girls rant} |
Did she pledge anywhere?

Oh dear....bless Sparkles heart!
|
So what you're basically saying is that whatever letters she had didn't belong to a "good" sorority in your standards. Considering every sorority at UGA is exceptional that is extremely rude to say and inaccurate.

I went through at UGA in the 90s, and there was one house where, I kid you not, every sister I talked to had exceptionally thick eyebrows - think Brooke Shields, not Frida Kahlo. So for the remainder of my time in college, any time I saw those letters, I would immediately check their eyebrows. They may have had some thin-browed girls, but I never met one. I think the fact that Sparkles found a home speaks to the inclusive nature of the Greek System at UGA. But it's likely that some houses would try to tame her, and others would let Sparkles be Sparkles. |
BraveMaroon, that's a fantastic post!

Ha... ha... ha... ha... BraveMaroon-- I think I know what house that was! I think My best friend in HS pledged there (and yes she had THOSE eyebrows)-- I went to visit one weekend and every time I met another sister all I could think was OMG they ALL have the exact freaking eyebrows!!!!! ha ha ha.... It was distracting... :D:D:D |

That's correct. I meant perfect more in the way that every house is pretty equal in terms of looks, involvement, etc.

I haven't been on here in forever, but it seems like yesterday that my daughter was going through recruitment at UGA and everyone was so supportive! She is now a junior and happy as can be!
Today was the first day of first round and she felt really good about how prepared she and her sisters are! It is exciting no matter what side you are on. I asked her how many PNMs they were expecting and she said 1475 but I don't know if that is anywhere close to accurate - it seems smaller than last year. Good luck mommas and girls! |
The 1475 is accurate, and it is about 200 down from last year. This was extremely surprising because we were expecting over 1700.
|
I actually took it to mean that there was a sorority at that time known for wearing lots of pink or sparkly stuff!!!

UGA Recruitment
Friend's DD who had 4.0 and strong resume was thrilled to have a full list this morning. In her dorm another pnm has eight to visit today.
|
For some reason, I know a bunch who had 8. The groups were told that cuts would be heavy and that 8 would be good!

Photos
Photos of women taking part in sorority recruitment can be found on Spotted OnlineAthens. Images are posted each day of women on the buses, walking to meetings and recruitment counselors in their bright outfits.
|
Bids go out at 6 pm! I am Alum Financial Adviser for the chapter there but have no idea how things have gone...not a whisper. I hope all the PNMs find their home!
|
I'm hearing quota is 71. We'll see if that holds.
|
It's 6! YESSSS!!!!!
