Greekchat.com "Classic" Film Reviews

As a companion thread to the immensely popular "Current" Film Reviews, I hope this new thread can be used to critique the films that we have grown up watching, whether it be a classic Disney film from days past or that one movie that actually made a person fall in love with the art of motion pictures.

Although "Jaws" originally was released 8-years before I was born, I did really enjoy the series until after "Jaws 3" was released the year I was born. Usually sequels to original movies aren't as well done or entertaining as the original, but "Jaws 3" was my favorite one. Even the 3-D was pretty good for the time period. :p

I watch a lot of classics on Netflix that I haven't seen, yet. But I'll post them here when I watch them. Awesome thread! :)

I never get tired of Moonstruck. Just a perfect movie from beginning to end.

Still one of the best Classics of all time. One of my favorites. Scares me every time I watch it. Creepy! Creepy! Creepy!

Might be sacrilegious to say so, but I find Gone With the Wind a complete bore. Tried to watch it and fell asleep. Also find Casablanca a bore.

I'm a but older than many of you but here are some of my favorite movies: To Kill a Mockingbird, Hoosiers, Body Heat, The Days of Wine & Roses, Paper Moon, Witness, It's a Wonderful Life, Misery, Brian's Song(original), Something For Joey, Ice Castles, The Other Side of the Mountain, The Jagged Edge, The Mean Season, Driving Miss Daisy, Ben-Hurr. This should give you movie buffs several "new"movies to watch that you may not have ever heard of. Hard to find some of them. Let me know if you do so I can pass the info on!

I agree with all of this. I will try to think on some classic movies and post my thoughts later.

Some of the movies I consider classics might be quite "new" to some of you born before the 80's.
- I just saw The Breakfast Club for the first time and loved it.

- Gone with the Wind bores me to tears as well

- I love the old musicals from the 50s and 60s especially

- Breakfast at Tiffanys remains a favorite

Nah, I don't think so. I think most of the Brat Pack movies are movie classics, the "Breakfast Club" especially.

Does anyone remember the movie with Emilio Estevez and Demi Moore in it? It was released in the 80s. It was a bank robbery movie, as I can remember. I'll try to find the name of it. A true underrated classic. :)

In 2013, I watched ALL of the Best Picture Oscar winners from "WINGS" to "THE ARTIST"; one a day for 85 days. Some of them were extremely dated and have not stood the test of time. Some I had forgotten how really great they were, such as AMADEUS and THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES.

Disclaimer: I'm in no way affiliated nor employed by Fathom Events, TCM or any film distribution company but am employed by a movie theater chain......

But over the last several years, Fathom Events and TCM have teamed up to show classic films on the big screen, digitally broadcast, and so up next in April, they will be showing the 1965 Best Picture Academy Award winner, "The Sound of Music". I saw this film only once on the big screen, via a 70mm print in 1991 at the Fox Theater in Atlanta.

Classic film buff GCers, this could be a creative way for meet-and-greets at your local theaters for some of the films, if any of our fellow GCers live close to each other.

Anyone have any favorite war movie classics?

Two of my favorites:

All quiet on the western front

Tora! Tora! Tora!

cheerfulgreek 01-24-2015 11:39 AM

What's interesting is "Tora! Tora! Tora!" was released less than 30-years after the actual attack happened.

All quiet on the Western Front, I had to read the book in high school. Boring is an understatement.

I read the book before I saw the movie. I loved the book, and the movie isn't that far from the book at all.

While I have mentioned it before, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, is one of the best "war" films I have ever seen and if it's on tv, I watch it.

But there is a twist: it is about the effects after WWII of the soldiers coming home.

I want to see that one. I've never heard of it. Is it on Netflix?

You can get it from Netflix DVD but it is not streaming there. I also checked the free streaming on TCM's website but they only have clips and they play it semi-regularly on TCM; and that is one film that I do not spoil ever, as it would take away from it's powerful impact.

Powerfully moving, the film's last few scenes are so human. I'm not going to say why but you will see.

Thanks, ZetaPhi. I only have the streaming feature on Netflix. But I looked it up on YouTube, and I saw the full movie on there. Woohoo for Smart TVs. :p

I'm going to watch it tonight. :)

With all of the press lately for PTSD affecting soldiers returning from war, it really fits into various discussions. FYI: Harold Russell won 2 Oscars, a Supporting Actor and a Honorary. He is one of the rare non-professional actors to win an Oscar.

:( -- I tried watching it, but although they have the full movie on YT, when I clicked on it, they still redirected me to open some weird account to watch free movies. According to Google, it's on Red Box. I'll try them.

Speaking of war classics, I forgot to mention:

Full Metal Jacket (hilarious at some parts) :p

Platoon

A great movie. Not quite as suspenseful as Jaws 1, 2, or 3, but still a very good movie. I liked it. :)

Or check at a local dvd store or resale place.

Full Metal Jacket is one of the many masterpieces of Stanley Kubrick.

He only won one Oscar, for visual effects for "2001" (MGM submitted his name as the nominee in that category, not Douglas Trumball, et. al.)

The very rare, and not on dvd, 1983 animated cult classic TWICE UPON A TIME, will be shown very late tonight as a part of TCM's Underground. It starts at 2:15am EST.

I'm watching "The Best Years of our Lives" right now. That guy is cheating on his wife. -- hilarious. Great movie, so far. :)

Another classic returns to theaters for only 2 shows at select theaters on March 26 & March 31: this classic defined the 80s generation of teens and is one of the many now iconic films of the late John Hughes:

So, Greekchatters, were you the rebel, the jock, the princess, the brain or the outcast?

(I find it highly ironic that we talked about this movie earlier when I created this thread HA HA )
