Aggieland Recruitment
Bid Day is today so I will begin my daughter's recruitment story now and work on it as I have time this week.
Please forgive me if I use some wrong terminology. I was not Greek and only know what I learned here and I don't have the best memory. There are 12 NPC sororities on campus. All of them are amazing chapters and have beautiful houses on the row. Total last year was around 200, Quota last year if I remember right was 49 freshman and 18 upperclassmen. Panhellenic is thinking total this year will be around 85 based on previous placement rates and 1400 PNM's The houses on campus are: Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Delta Pi Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Delta Gamma Delta Zeta Gamma Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Delta Kappa Kappa Gamma Pi Beta Phi Zeta Tau Alpha We are from a family of Die Hard Aggies so I am going to name the sororities after Aggie Icons or Traditions. I haven't even assigned them to a particular sorority so they are in no particular order. I'll be back after today's festivities to start the story. Kyle Field Olsen Field Reveille Fish Camp Silver Taps Muster Academic Plaza Corps of Cadets Bonfire MSC G Rollie Century Tree |
Sounds like fun. You name has me wondering: do you have a sister who is an ADPi?

I just got back from Bid day and it was an amazing experience. I have not seen such a genuine smile on my daughter in years.
Ok, back to last Monday. She lives with 3 other girls and they are all going through Recruitment. There is currently a little tension in the apartment over a party last week so it's going to be an interesting week. 4 girls in recruitment plus walking on egg shells at the apartment. My DD has a couple of houses in her mind based on what she has heard but knows not to make any decisions based on the hearsay. I have found out since she has completed the process she did have one she really wanted in the beginning because she didn't want to hurt feelings of a relative. But she let that leave her mind once everything got going. She attended 7 houses on the first open house day. First was Corps of Cadets she knew one girl in this house. The girls she visited with were nice although the main girl she talked to knew very little about TAMU. That bothered my DD. In her mind everyone should know all about TAMU and all its traditions. She has heard that this is the party house but she knows to form her own opinion. Nothing she has seen today makes her think that is true. She wouldn't mind returning here but it's the first house and she does not know what is still to come. Next was Reveille - She had great conversations at Reveille and talked to many girls. The conversation flowed and never felt forced. She would love to return here. The 3rd house of the day was Kyle Field - Lots of girls in her Rho Gamma group want to go here. She had a great visit and would be willing to go back she had nice conversations with more than one girl. 4th house - Olsen FieldShe was really surprised here. She visited with several officers and had an amazing conversation. She really wants to return here. 5th house - Fish Camp from what I have learned now she really wanted Fish Camp to be her home. She only talked to one girl though and they didn't really hit it off. She was very disappointed after this party and was very confused by the way the party went. 6th house - Muster - Although she was hot and tired she was excited for this house. It was nearing 100 degrees with tons of humidity. She was amazed at this house, it was a beautiful building and the women there were lovely too. She met the President and two VP's and had fabulous conversation with everyone. She left this house believing this could be her home for life. 7th house - Bonfire ---- She felt like she was at Bonfire. The sun was blazing and she was ready for the day to be over. She had woken up at 5 am and it was nearing 3 pm. She's just ready to be done. She walked into Bonfire and was greeted by the little of one of the only girls she knows that is Greek at TAMU. She then talked to a couple of VP's and got to wave at her friend. It seemed that everyone knew her name and as she was leaving they were all calling her name as she left the house. This long day is finally over. I got more details than I expected from her. She did want to see her mom. She was really funny because she said "I want to see you, but I don't want you to have to drive over." Ok what's a mom to do? drive an hour and make the daughter happy or come home and read greek chat. I drove the hour, took her chick-fil-a and laid down with her and got her to relax. She was very stressed out. |

Open House Day 2 - worn out already but ready to see the rest of the houses.
MSC My daughter really wanted to give this chapter a chance she went in with an open mind but did not feel at home in this house. It held open house differently than the other houses. They spoke with one girl and then were seated in a room and the President spoke to them. She didn't really feel like she got to know the girls in the chapter. Academic Plaza - I expected a lot of info from this house but all I got from her was they are okay. Silver Taps - She visited with several girls and had decent conversation but there were lags in it and it felt a little forced. She did not like this one as much as the others. G Rollie White - She felt at home here and could see her self in this chapter. She talked to several girls that have similar interest. She was able to talk to at least one officer. Century Tree - She had neither a positive or negative feeling at this house. She wouldn't mind returning to this chapter to learn more about them. Open house is over and she is ready to rank. She has a couple of clear favorites already although I have advised against this. There are a couple she just felt a better fit with than others. She ranked them 1.Bonfire 1. Muster 1. Olsen Field 1. G. Rollie White 1. Kyle Field 1. Fish Camp 1. Reveille 1. Century Tree 1. Academic Plaza 10.Corps of Cadets 11. Silver Taps 12. MSC |
I'll post Philanthropy later today
|
Having favorites is ok. Allowing those favorites to cloud an open mind to opportunities is not.
|
Yep. The girls who seem the happiest at the end of it all are the ones who can develop new favorites from the invitations they have.
|
I can't wait to hear where she went!!
|
thank GOD you are not going to drag this out and you're actually going to FINISH it! I love you already, I really do.
|
I'm back. She came home this afternoon to see her dogs so I couldn't really spend time writing the next part of the story.
Philanthropy Day - 9 parties - she studied each group over the summer so that she would be aware of both their National and Local Philanthropies. They aren't supposed to text but everyone knows they do. She sent me a message that said 9 - well of course I wanted more information than that. A couple of hours later she told me she was cut by Academic Plaza, G Rollie White, and Kyle Field. These are all sororities that most likely have a lot of legacies and have to make heavy cuts. This is where being from a small town with no connections may have hurt her. She really wasn't bothered by these cuts because she still has a full schedule. 9 Parties Fish Camp she really wants to like this chapter and today they moved up the list a little. She still only talked to one girl but she really likes the Philanthropy of this group. MSC even though this chapter is not one of the strongest on campus my DD loves the philanthropy for this group. However, after visiting more with this group today she still does not feel like she fits with this group of women. Reveille my DD would be fine returning here and had great conversation but she's not quite sure if they are for her. Bonfire - she is falling more in love with this chapter. The philanthropy for this group fits in with a group her entire family is heavily involved with. Yesterday there were 3 groups that were stacked at the top with no real preference. Today Bonfire has pulled away a little. Corps of Cadets -She had ranked this group in her bottom 3 on Tuesday but had a better visit today. She visited with a couple of really sweet women here. She's still not sure if she fits in here. However, she likes their philanthropy. Silver Taps - The visit here just seemed forced and there was a lot of dead time. She will rank this in her bottom three again today. Century Tree - This group dropped from the first day and she will rank them in her bottom three. There just not good conversation at all today. They were almost in the bottom 3 yesterday and Corps of Cadets improved today. Olsen Field - This group fell off a little today because my daughter does not see herself taking part in the philanthropy. It's not that she doesn't believe in it or doesn't like it, she just does not think it fits with her personality. It's hard to explain but I agree 100%. Muster - this group separated itself into the top two today with Bonfire. She still spoke to several officers and really likes this group and is her favorite philanthropy. She talked about a dear friend that was affected by the cause this group supports. This was a day that would never end. Finally ranking at about 9 pm 1. Bonfire 1. Muster 1. Olsen Field 1. Fish Camp 1. Reveille 1. Corps of Cadets 10. Century Tree 11. Silver Taps 12. MSC She get's to sleep in a little tomorrow and is ready to see if she will have another full schedule. The stress is starting to get to her. She shed a few tears tonight just from sheer exhaustion and stress. I will post Skit day tomorrow morning and try to do pref day tomorrow night. I don't get the day off so I'll have to actually get some work done at some point. |
Your daughter's recruitment story is a great example of realizing why she may have been released from certain groups (lots of legacies) and moving on with the choices she has left.
And always interesting to see how groups that did not impress first round move up with a second look (and vice versa). |
I finally got the text and it had but one word again..........SIX.
I could not be happier and breathed a little sigh of relief. I waited patiently for the text saying who had cut her or if she had her top six back. Finally it came. She was going back to her 5 of her favorite chapters and 1 that she had ranked in the bottom 3. She was fine and enjoying her day. She was cut by Reveille. Again, she was not really phased by this. She still had a full schedule. She would not be returning to either MSC or Silver Taps which she had ranked in her bottom 3. I do not remember the order of the parties but here is a summary of each. I got very little information from her today. Fish Camp continues to improve in her mind. This is the group that I found out she has been hoping for all summer. But recruitment with them has not been what she expected. She just was not clicking with the girls she was matched with. She knew a girl in this house from school sports (rival town)but has not seen her. The skit was cute and she believes she would like to return here. When she ranked today it ended up coming down to this and Olsen Field for the 4th spot. Muster - She did not have the experience here that she had the first two parties but she still loves them. Bonfire - Absolutely in love with this chapter the skit was great, but it's still close between Muster and Bonfire. There will be a lot of thinking to do tonight. Corps of Cadets - Really not clicking with this chapter. One of her roommates is down to 3 chapters and has said she knows she will be in this chapter. Another roommate really likes this chapter but my daughter just hasn't clicked with anyone. Century Tree - Century Tree had been in her top 9 but fell out of the top 6 after Philanthropy day. However, she didn't mind returning here but still just did not click with these girls. Conversation was forced and a not much in common with them. Olsen Field- She continues to like this chapter and has a lot in common with these girls. She has been surprised to be invited back to this chapter based on other cuts. This house is another one that has many legacies. On her way back to rank she called and didn't really know which house to put 3 or 4. Her top 2 have remained the top 2 all week. Olsen Field has been in the top 3 from open house but fell off a little and Fish Camp had really continued to move up maybe from around 6 the first day to 3 or 4 now. I did not give her any opinion, I just told her to look at the girls and see which girls were more like her. She ended up ranking 1. Bonfire 1. Muster 1. Fish Camp 4. Olsen Field 5. Corps of Cadets 6. Century Tree I took the my daughter and her roommates Dinner and just hung out with them to keep them calm. My daughter wanted me to spend the night so I did. She talked a lot about whether she liked Muster or Bonfire more. I just listened and tried not to influence her at all. I mentioned things I knew about their Philanthropies and the type of projects each group participates in each year. She finally dozed off. On Friday morning she got up and continued to be conflicted and I again just pointed out she had to think back upon the week and go with her heart. At that point she was sitting on the floor applying her make up. She stood up and threw the sign of one of the chapters. In the back of my mind I was praying that she didn't just jinx herself. I dropped the girls off at the MSC in their after five attire at 11 in the morning ready for a day filled with stress. I'm headed to load the tailgate trailer for Saturday's first home game at the new Kyle Field. I'll finish the story tonight. Gig'em |
Mom, you gave her wise counsel.

Argh!!
Following this post like crazy!! Tell us about Bid Day! Very curious about where she went!
Love from an Aggie Delta Zee!! Class of 2002 Whoop and Gig Em!! |
This is really fun to read!! I am excited to see where your daughter went, I have friends in a few chapters there and I am dying to know if she joined one of them!
|
Yea, I'd like to see the ending. Pref and bid day...one more post.
|
She went to the second convocation and then finally got her schedule.
She is headed to Bonfire Corps of Cadets Fish Camp Yea a sigh of relief another full set of parties. Muster was absent and I asked if she was ok. She said yes mom "I am going to be a Bonfire". I was a nervous wreck all evening. My son is in the high school band so a little Friday night football helped a little. The Bonfire house was first on her schedule and just as she was about to go in. Luckily her last name is near the beginning of the alphabet. The poor girls at the end got drenched. She spent a lot of time crying in this house. Her friend was in the pref choir and she preffed her. She saw her friends mom in the house and left knowing this would be her home and she told her friend as much. I got another text that said "I am going to be a Bonfire." Next on the list was Fish Camp. She had a nice time but it just did not work out. Who knows what happened here. It's where she wanted to go but they did not rush her hard. Had my nephew told them she wanted them and they assumed they had her? I don't know. It just is not to me. When I told my niece at the end of the night that she ranked her house second it hurt a little. I really wanted them to be sisters but it surely does not seem headed that way. Corps of Cadets - She enjoyed this house and the ceremony was nice but she told them she had found her home elsewhere. This is the house that 2 of her roommates will end up joining on bid day. Now the waiting begins. My mom and I are headed to bid day on Saturday and will take her to lunch and do a little shopping to help pass time. There is a necklace at a local store that she wants once she text where she is going. It's going to be a long day. Bid day starts at 3. I'll be back to finish soon. I can't wait to tell you which house is her new home. She is attending her first chapter meeting as I type this. She is so happy. |

I'm having a heart attack. The oh so thoughtful daughter seems to have gone off the rails. I hope this all ended well!
|
I think I know!!! I know the last 2 but not for sure on the 1st but I think I know
|
From what I've read about how many girls went through and how competitive it has gotten at TAMU, it seems like every house has really stepped up their game! Curious to know who all the names belong to!!
|
Wow. Broadcasting to one and all that she is going to be an XYZ, before pref night is even over is .....

When I preffed back in the day, I had DG and DZ. I loved them both, and I told both my pref night girls that I could see myself at either house. I wasn't lying either! DZ was my last party and I just knew. I was so happy to get my bid the next day, but I don't think I could have or would have jinxed myself.

Just sounds a bit cocky to me. |
I had a clear first choice and a "fine, I'll accept the bid if I have to" choice, but I'd have never said so at the time. First, I've NEVER been good at the "I'm just really not that into you" conversation. But also, I was smart enough to know that I didn't know how this was all going to turn out. Thankfully it turned out how I wanted so I didn't have to bear down and take what I had. But if I had, I wouldn't have egg on my face for having opened my trap.
|
Knowing my daughter she didn't say it out right. She's a pretty shy girl. She may have just told me that she said that. I'll have to go back and ask her. She would have accepted a bid at any of these 3 houses so I doubt she said anything that would have hurt her. She was probably just being over confident with me. I really didn't think of how that sounded when I typed it.
As I said two roommates are Corps of Cadets new members and the third is a proud new member of Reveille. |
Well she went to Bid Day at Blue Bell park and waited for time to open her invitation. She sent a text to me again with just one word.
Bonfire, which was one of her favorites from day one. She is extremely excited to me a new member of Delta Gamma and yes it was their sign she threw on Pref morning. Their bid day photo can be found on their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/aggiedeltag...type=1&theater |
YAY!!! :)
It's great that your daughter found her home. |
Whew! I'm glad it all worked out. I love how DG has such a universal image. Those sailor hats are such a small thing but such an instant bond.
|
Congratulations to your daughter and to DG!
|
That's great! So what house did her friends go to?
|
That was a good story. Congratulations to your daughter and Delta Gamma.
|
I am thrilled!!!
