Preference day outfit help!?
So preference day is coming up, and I need some advice on what to wear. They said to where formal dresses, but obviously not like prom dresses. They showed us a couple of pictures, and most of the girls were wearing black. I saw this dress at the store, and I was wondering if this would be okay….
http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse...&pid=970520002 I was thinking about wearing it with some type of gold necklace and either heels or wedges….what do you guys think? *the dress is also 45% off in the store so... |
Without knowing your campus (which I'm not suggesting you tell us, either) I can state generally that dress with heels and nice jewelry would be appropriate for pref on many campuses I've visited.
|
I think that dress is nice and most likely cool. You don't have to wear black.
|
An LBD is always appropriate. And you could buy it in the burgundy if you prefer.
|
The dress is fine. Many of the sororities will all be dressed in black, so something bright wouldn't be a bad idea (bold yellow scarf, for instance). Just remember that you're impressing women, not men - nothing too short or sexy!
|
It's Kind of plain, a nice dress but I am not sure if you would stand out in that dress.

I think with the right accessories this will be fine. Just do bold, yet stylish, accessories and shoes.
|
I wouldn't wear black. Many chapters wear black outfits for pref, and you want to stand out.
That dress in burgundy, with the right accessories, would be great. Think about what you might wear to Christmas Mass or High Holy Day services. Nice heels, tasteful jewelry, full makeup, nicely done hair and nails. |
While I think I would go with something with a little more flair, this basic staple of an LBD, jujjed up, could definitely work. Better to be quietly elegant than prom'y. A bold piece of statement jewelry could fill the void. Maybe buy this and keep looking, if you can afford it? You will most definitely make use of this dress, whether you wear it to preference or not.
|
That is a kick-butt, timeless dress and I would buy it in black AND burgundy even if you weren't rushing! You can glam it up with jewelry or maybe (if you wear the black) a classic red lip. Better to be simple and elegant in a well made dress - and their things ARE well made - than a lot of fuss and frufru that just looks cheap.

33girl, I totally agree! I'm debating getting the burgundy one - it is AWESOME!

I'd do heels or a dressy wedge (not a casual wedge). My daughter's chapter does wine or blue dresses for pref, and the chapter I advise wears pink. Black is definitely the most common for members, though. |
That dress is outrageous. In either color. It'll be a go-to staple for years. Trust me on this. With the right accessories (either bracelets OR necklace plus earrings) and shoes, and hairstyle, you WILL stand out.
I'm debating buying it in black. I have two (or is it three) LBDs but another one can't hurt. Right? |
I love the dress. If you are a guest at a pref. party you have already stood out and they are going to know you are there, so you don't have to worry about standing out. You will look classy-and that is always a good thing.
|
I love that dress! At 45% off, I'd grab it in both colors. My dd left for college with 2 LBDs that had a very similar silhouette, and these were incredibly handy for a variety of occasions.
Styled smartly, I think either of these would be an elegant statement for pref. (Okay if someone does buy this dress, would you please provide feedback on size/fit -- especially petite size? Considering purchasing as a gift for daughter) |
And on a related note, for anyone reading who has a high school-aged daughter: When the salespeople in the prom dress stores try to convince you that your daughter will wear this (expensive) dress while in college to formals, pref, etc (you know, it's an investment and all), they are lying. Especially if it is floor length.
Your daughter will not want to wear a prom dress in college. (Probably occurs even less often as bridesmaids wearing their dress again.) |
Lane swerving here a moment, I would totally RENT for prom, or take advantage of the new trend in donated dresses.
But back to the point here (ok, not really) I think we have come across an excellent back door marketing campaign... do you think this dress, 40% off by the way, would work for fill in blank event that we all need? And BOOM, entire overstock is sold out ;) |
Oh, hai. I HAVE LIKE $120 OFF IN BANANA COUPONS Y'ALL.
Maybe I don't have to shlep to the outlets and spend them on Gap sweatpants. eta: I just got the wine red for $18. :D Hartofsec, I'm un-petite but will let you know if it fits true to their size chart. |

Another of my sisters, who was my maid of honor at my wedding (code name JK), wore her MOH dress from my wedding when JR got married. Evidently, I have good taste. :D |
My prom dress was a black Betsey Johnson. Wore it many times again at college formals and a cappella performances.
