TAMU Recruitment

I'm not sure that I will get enough information from my daughter to do a recruitment story, but I want to share some information that we received in the parent convocation yesterday.

There are roughly 1400 PNM's which is a new record for TAMU. TAMU will typically place 75% of the girls that begin the process. Last year only 5 - yes only FIVE girls were dropped from recruitment. The other 250 or so that were not placed withdrew on their own. I believe there was a big sigh in the room when the number five was put out there.

There was a separate meeting after the meeting for Blinn Team girls.

They are expecting a total quota of around 85 and there is an Upper Classman quota.

Today and tomorrow they go to six parties each.
Wednesday - up to 9 - philanthropy day
Thursday - up to 6 - skit day
Friday - Pref up to 3
Saturday - Bid Day

It's going to be an exciting week.

Good luck to your daughter!

Wynter 08-26-2014 02:31 AM

Good luck to your daughter! I hope she finds her home and has a great recruitment :)

adiisis 08-26-2014 11:38 AM

She went to 7 houses yesterday and will go to 5 today. She had an amazing time at every house. Didn't really have a bad feeling about any particular house although she did of course like some more than others. She would be glad to go back to any of those 7.

Of course it was hot & humid but she says she didn't sweat bad because of a product she found at Ulta called Medi-Tate. It was pricy but worth it. She met some amazing girls during the day and can't wait to attend the other 5 houses today.

They will rank this afternoon. They will choose their top 9 and then rank 3. Parties begin at noon tomorrow.

She only knows someone in 2 houses and they are acquaintances, not really what you would call friends. She has no preconceived ideas about any house other than knowing her aunt was in one house decades ago and her cousin was in another about 15 years ago.

I am anxiously waiting for my phone call which should come around 4 this afternoon.

thetalady 08-26-2014 11:47 AM

Love that we are starting to get some rush stories! You have been around for a while, so I am sure that you know not to give any details that might identify your daughter during rush. Just be careful!

adiisis 08-26-2014 11:51 AM

Yes, I am being very careful. I have read and read and gotten so many tips from you wonderful women. Once this is all over I may write a full story. She is actually keeping a great journal.

ElvisLover 08-26-2014 12:23 PM

Is Medi-Tate a type of deoderant/antipersperant?

adiisis 08-26-2014 12:39 PM

It appears that is actually an over the counter medication for excessive sweating. She said it was the best thing ever. Many girls told her she didn't even look like it was hot outside.

http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/prod...Impprod1810225

DERMAdoctor MEDeTATE is an injection-free medicated hyperhidrosis control wipes for a blissfully dry existence. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition described as excessive sweating despite being inactive. Medical hyperhidrosis affects 3% of Americans. The face, underarms, palms, soles, areas under the breast, cleavage and groin areas are most commonly affected. DERMAdoctor Solution: MEDeTATE your way to blissfully dry existence with a technique so simple, it merely requires a single stroke of a towelette. Alleviates the need for cumbersome anti-sweating devices, ineffective topical prescriptions, drowsiness-inducing Rx meds and costly and painful Botox injections or invasive surgery.

Purify the being and eliminate embarrassing excessive sweating and wetness. This harmonious union of dermatologist recommended antiperspirant therapy and innovative "needle-free" technology, replaces a perspiration-filled reality with a supremely dry state of consciousness. DERMAdoctor MEDeTATE contains a patent pending formulation of newest generation antiperspirant therapy with a blend of botanicals that work syngergistically to maximize hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) control.

You don't have to have hyperhidrosis to need MEDeTATE. Sweaty hands due to anxiety from dates, job interviews, and the curves that life throws you are embarrassing. MEDeTATE helps prevent this. Also keeps make-up from melting on a hot day; prevents fashion emergency wet spots under breasts, underarms and inner thighs.

Actually I am not Greek, my bio Sister is an ADII . When I made my name I wasn't thinking that it would appear that I was an ADII. That's how non-greeks think. LOL.;)

I love this site and it has really helped us.

travelgirl 08-26-2014 08:18 PM

My daughter went through recruitment two years ago at TAMU and ended up falling in love with a house that she thought she wouldn't like. (G.R.....ugh!) Long story short, she has made great friends and really loves being involved in Greek life! Good luck to your daughter; please keep us posted!

SWTXBelle 08-26-2014 08:42 PM

I am on pins and needles - lots of great Katy girls going through this year!

adiisis 08-26-2014 09:10 PM

Today was a little different for her than yesterday. There was not any house that she would not want to return to tomorrow but she did not have the same excitement today as yesterday. It could be the lack of sleep or the heat though.

She did her rankings and is enjoying the evening with friends. She is also relieved there is not 5 AM wake up time tomorrow. Busses don't begin running till 10:30 or so tomorrow, parties begin at noon.

They can return to 9 tomorrow. They don't get their schedule until they arrive on sorority row so I won't know where she is attending parties until the day is complete. It will be a very long day tomorrow. The last party is over at 9 at which time they will go to the computer center to rank.

More details to follow tomorrow.

Thrilled you are writing a story of sorts. Hope your daughter is having a great time.

OPhiAGinger 08-27-2014 12:44 AM

Have classes started at TAMU? If so, how do the girls get from campus to the chapter houses? And if they live off campus, is there a place to park? This is one of the few campuses I am familiar with, and I'm puzzled at the mechanics.

Wynter 08-27-2014 12:55 AM

It sounds like she's doing great. I look forward to hearing the outcome.

Classes have not started but everyone is moved in. The PNM's MUST ride the buses provided by Panhellenic to Sorority Row. The buses run from Olsen Field and the MSC. Most girls that live on campus probably utilize the bus from the MSC. Off campus students can purchase a parking pass for the Olsen lot for $5.00. At the end of each days the women go to the computer center to rank and then they may either walk back to the dorm or buses are provided back to Olsen.

So far it has been a wonderful experience.

There are some photos on facebook on the Texas A & M Panhellenic page.:)

They also just posted a video with all of the door chants from Open House days.

Any updates today? How is her week going?

I was one of the parents in the room who sighed with relief when I heard that number. I did not go through rush in college, and now that my daughter is going through recruitment it's all new to me. Honestly, I was relieved to learn that recruitment at A&M isn't as competitive as it can be at some other schools--or, that's what I believed I was hearing. My daughter has been doing great through the process, getting invited back to the max number of parties for day 2 & 3. But a friend of hers got a phone call this morning that she was dropped from recruitment, which makes me sad for the girl because I thought if the girls "maximize their options and keep an open mind" then they will find a place in one of the houses. I guess that was naive since the numbers couldn't really work out (1400 PNMs with only 12 houses) . . . but my daughter says there were several other girls she knows of who got invited back to even less parties than her friend, it seems likely they may have gotten the same phone call today. I understand that getting cut early in the process is part of the risk of going through recruitment; I just wish that risk--even for girls who "maximize their options and keep an open mind"--hadn't been downplayed for these girls, so they don't feel so blindsided.

adiisis 08-28-2014 02:59 PM

I am sorry for the delay. She has six parties today! She is having an amazing recruitment. I won't say perfect because she has had cuts but not an y she was bothered by. I can say it is great so far.

I'm just wondering if these cuts were upperclassmen or Blinn Team girls?

OPhiAGinger 08-28-2014 03:05 PM

Is there an upperclass quota at TAMU?

This is a true statement but it is missing one key piece of information - the PNM has to HAVE options. If a PNM goes to HER maximum pref parties* and has maximized her options throughout recruitment, she is guaranteed a bid. If she doesn't match the regular way, she will be placed as a quota addition. However, it is still entirely possible for a PNM to have no options. In other words, to have no invitations (to a round before pref). In that case the PNM will not receive a bid at all, unless she is later snapped.

*If the maximum number of pref parties is 2, but a PNM only has 1 invitation, she is still maximizing HER options, and will be guaranteed a bid.

FSUZeta 08-28-2014 04:11 PM

The number of PNMs participating in recruitment does not negatively impact the number who will receive bids. If 1400 begin recruitment and 1400 make it to pref., then 1400 will be eligible to receive a bid:in other words, if each received and accepted a bid, then there would be 116/117 new members per sorority.

DubaiSis 08-28-2014 04:30 PM

In the original quote, it said 5 girls got cut completely. While that number is fabulously low, it is no consolation to those 5 girls. I think daughter's friend just found that out the hard way. Best of luck to her -I'm sure that really sucks.

Interestedmom 08-28-2014 04:43 PM

And if she had the grades.

There could definitely be other factors at play that caused her to be dropped early.

adiisis 08-28-2014 07:18 PM

TAMU does have an upper class quota. My daughters has 3 roommates and one is a soph. She was cut heavy but had 5 chapters yesterday. I'm not sure about today.

My daughter had at least 2 recs for every house but one. We thought we had two for that one but we found out at the last minute that one never sent the information.

I am waiting to hear from my PNM now. She had all six parties in the first 6 slots and then two breaks. I think she's excited because it means she will get to watch the 2nd half of the Aggie game. It's going great for the good guys so far. Just went up 24-14.

I'm excited for my sweet girl and can't wait to see her tomorrow.

When do they find out where they are going for pref? A full schedule this late in the week is great! So exciting for her to find her sorority home soon.

Wow, 1400-crazy numbers! I am so happy greek life is growing at A&M. Good luck to all the PNMs tonight at pref:). Gig 'Em

Yes, congratulations to both of you! Please post your daughter's recruitment story after bid day if you can provide some details! If not, I have enjoyed following her success through your posts.

Ha, understandable. We usually recommend that PNMs (or their moms ;) ) tell their recruitment stories after everything is over, anyway; better to lay low until there's a bid in hand!

I hope your daughter has a great day tomorrow!

ZTA1550 08-30-2014 09:28 AM

Best wishes to your daughter, adiisis! Three invites to pref is amazing!

travelgirl 08-30-2014 12:03 PM

My daughter said they made record cuts this year before pref night. (Blinn team inclusion did not go well. If the girl wasn't a legacy, she was most likely cut after the first round.) Congratulations to your daughter. BTW, I've heard this year's quota is around 85. Can't wait to hear about her bid day!
