Trying to start new chapter at Thiel College!
 

Hi! A few friends and I are trying to start up a chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma at Thiel College, Greenville, PA. Last month a charter was restarted for the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, which gave Thiel 5 fraternities and 4 sororities. Unfair, right? So, a group of my friends I, deciding we want more diversity in our school's greek life, settled on Phi Sigma Sigma! :D We're hoping to get in contact with some other chapters to help us through process, and we'd like to know more about Phi Sigma Sigma on a personal note. I guess my friend Amber has already been in contact with the Gamma Gamma chapter, but I don't know much about that, yet. Our only fear right now is getting over the school's strict administration (they have sticks up their asses, but we'll get around that!). If anyone has any support, stories or ideas, drop me a line! And, Angi, what year are you at Shippensburg? My boyfriends brother goes to Shippensburg, and he was wondering what year you were :)

where are you guys in relation to ship? if we can figure out who your chapter consultant would be, nationals might be able to help get you all started!

Thiel College is in Greenville, PA, which is about an hour north of Pittsburgh, and an hour south of Erie. We are a small liberal arts college, with just over 1000 students. I think our closest chapter is Gamma Gamma (Clarion), either that or Zeta Nu (Slippery Rock). Hope this helped! :D

I just wanted to offer my support in bringing Phi Sigs to Thiel. I just recently graduated from the gamma gamma chapter at clarion university. I have moved to Maryland, but would be more than willing to answer any questions you may have. I still get to Clarion often so if you need anything don't be afraid to ask. I am also getting involved at the alumnae and national level in Maryland and helping the undergraduate chapters in the area with recruitment as a member of the alum advisory board. I am also starting membership in the alum chapter of Phi Sigs in the area. Phi Sigma Sigma is really a wonderful sorority and I wish you the best of luck! Hope to hear from you soon!

Wow! That is so great that you want to start a chapter of Phi Sig at your college! I am an active member of the Zeta Chi chapter at Villa Julie College in Maryland. We also have a really yucky administration, but we have proven ourselves to them by becoming active in the campus events. Phi Sigma Sigma has a lot to offer, and I am sure that if your campus allowed another fraternity to develop, they will allow Phi Sig to develop as well. Best of luck to all of you devoted ladies! :p

UPDATE!!!!!!

Amber (ThielGodess) and I went down to the head of greek life today, and she said she had already talked to the head of student services, and she is going to take the topic to the Feb. 7 meeting of Panhellenic reps from the 4 sororites here. There they will vote to either begin a comittee or forget it ever happened. We're so nervous! :eek: The only thing we're affraid of is a sorority saying they don't want us. Amanda and I gave her a few good points, let her know how much research and time we've put into this, and told her why Phi Sigma Sigma would be perfect for Thiel. So now we play the waiting game! We will post more updates as they come along!

Thank you to all you girls showing your support! We cannot vocalize how much we appreciate it. It makes us even more eager to become sisters of Phi Sigma Sigma! :D

Hey Girls!!! I would be included in the group that is trying to start a Phi Sigma Sigma chapter here at Thiel. So I guess that would make me Amber!:rolleyes: Well I hope that we can succeed in this and I do not intend on giving up. I am all for equality and this of all things just is not going to happen. It seems that a lot of you girls are supporting us and that makes everything just a little easier, knowing that there are people behind us. It has always been an interest to me to join a sorority but the ones here(as I am sure my friends would agree) just aren't what we've been looking for. I have been hearing about the Phi Sigs for about three years now and I have never heard anything bad. Well I must jet, but thank you to all of you supporting us in this fight!

We haven't heard anything back from the head of Greek Life yet. She said she would call us and let us know, and she hasn't called back yet! I guess we will try to find out on Monday... The wait is killing me! It might or might not be good... who knows. We'll just have to wait and see! We'll keep ya posted! :)

so Thielgirl and I went down and talked to the head of greek life here at lovely Thiel College..and she told us that we have to wait another 2 - 3 weeks before we'll know if they want to look into it.. Did I mention that this is the same school that when I was walking to lunch, I fell and hurt my wrist because of the ice on the sidewalk that they didn't take care of?? ..I love this school... :(

Keep your head held high girls...You got to show them that you are dedicated and don't back down easy. I realize what you are going through with this whole ordeal but it will turn it. It is a long process unfortunately.

well, since no one else has posted yet, i figured i'd let you in the bad news ThielGirl received this week..

"Thiel College is not looking forward to expanding at this time.. You can try again in 2003, and for right now, you can create a club called "The Phi Sig Club"...able to get theme housing..."

It would be pointless to attempt in 2003- we all would be rising seniors and some of the girls we had interested in it would already be graduating. So, unfortunatly, there will not be a new chapter at Thiel College :(

That really sucks that Theil did that to you, but you could still create the club.....and keep younger girls interested. Who knows, in 2003, you might be the biggest club on campus!

If this is something dear for you, I think you should make the club. Even as seniors you can still found a chapter and maybe next year, or the one after new women will become interested. It doesn't matter that you won't be initiated til after 2003 since "once a phi sigma Sigma, always a Phi Sigma Sigma"

As long as you uhold our ideals and follow our vision I'm sure your club could be quite similar to our sorority (although, I know, not really the same because of lack of national support and ritual)

2003 really isn't that far away :)

KEEP WITH IT!!!!

Definately start the club... you can be "the phi sig" club or make up your own greek letter name that means something to you!!! (like three of your initials or something cool) SOME OF OUR BEST AND MOST WONDERFUL SISTERS WERE ONLY IN FOR A YEAR!! Even if youre in Phi Sig, you get chartered, and then graduate... nothing says you cant go back and visit all the time... plus Phi Sig isnt just about college... your alumnae years are the longest time in Phi Sig... from newmember to active to Alum.... There are alumnae chapters, there are chapter cousultant jobs, theres councils, theres advising jobs... SO MUCH TO DO!

So keep trying!

I will get my butt to your school soon, I keep promising Amber!

As you can see, I kinda changed my screen name (lost the password for the other one! Oops!) Anyways, it seems like we have absolutely NO chance in getting another sorority into Thiel for a LONG time. :( I talked to a lot of girls from the different sororities, AND guys from some of the fraternities. It seems that not only was this upto the panhellenic council, but ALSO the fraternities (even the local one) were involved! :eek: I guess their whole reasoning was that there is not enough interest in the sororities already at Thiel. Well, I gave the head of Greek life the idea that Delta Sigma Phi fraternity came back to Thiel and gave Greek life a HUGE positive boost. Didn't buy it. I guess we have absolutely no chance.

Some positive things, tho:

I'm going to be doing informal recruitment this fall (we do informal in the fall at my school). I'm going to be rushing Zeta Tau Alpha, and Amanda (I can't remember her name on here... she was one of the three of us trying to start Phi Sig here) might be rushing either Chi Omega or ZTA. Trying to start the PSS chapter at Thiel really gave me a chance to spend a lot of time with the exsisting chapters here, and it's been great. :) I have met so many great and interesting people, and and I might not have done so if it had not been for the great girls I met through Phi Sigma Sigma! You girls are the greatest, and have proven wrong to me the typical Hollywood stereotypes of Greek life. I can never thank you guys enough! ::trying not to get all teary-eyed:: :cool:

Hope I can still keep contact with you girls in the future! I frequent Greek chat almost everyday, and I'll stop in on your boards once in a while or will see you on the general boards! My love to you all! :)
