Tattoos

What do you all honestly think of having a tattoo? Also, what do you think of having a tattoo of your letters or something else that represents your sorority/fraternity. Specifically, what do you think about tattoos for girls, especially sorority-related tattoos? I know that for males it is usually acceptable to have a tattoo of your fraternity. Do you have any tattoos??

I am thinking of getting my sorority letters tattooed on me somewhere, not sure where yet. Of course it is not going to be on my leg or anywhere visible to everyone.

Oh yeah, I also have a butterfly. It is on my lower back.

By the way, I always said I would NEVER get a tattoo. Three of my friends were getting tattoos so I was excited for them and got my own. Now I want to get something related to my sorority. Help!

BearyCuteAPhi 01-31-2002 03:24 AM

I would like to respond to that, personally tattoos are not my thing. :( If a guy has one, it's OK depending on what and where.

I have a tattoo of a violet, my sorority flower. It's on my lower back where I can conceal it if I want, and show it if I want. It's my way of having a permanent reminder of my lifetime commitment. I don't have letters, or a crest, and I've seen both a lot (yes, mostly on guys). I think that it's beautiful, and very tasteful without being blatent. People usually have to ask if it means anything, so it's personal too.
I know of a sister who got a very small violet and our letters tattooed on her ankle, but it's very small, and on the inside, so you can't see it all the time..
But I live in a college town so the tattoo place gets a lot of greek requests and people asking for the WSU logo (looks like the letters WSU in the form of a roaring cougar.. very cool). Everyone would take a picture of their tattoo and put it on her wall, so all the walls and ceilings are covering in people and their tattoos.. it's a good way to get some ideas..

I know I already posted about this in the AGD Forum "I got it!" thread..but here it goes again.

Two weeks ago I got my 2nd tattoo. It's a blue and white butterfly on a tribal design on my lower back area. When I went into the shop I didn't think I was going to get a really big one because I just wanted a small one...but when I saw the design I fell in love with it right away. The entire tattoo takes up about 1/4 of my back!

3 years ago I got my first one--Japanese Kanji characters that read "Love" and "Mom". When I got the butterfly I added "Dad" to the list. It's located on the upper back area.

My mother still doesn't know about the butterfly.

As far as getting sorority-related tattoos...I don't know. At this point I don't think it'd be appropriate for me to get it. I love AGD with all my heart...but personally I don't think it'd be okay. That's just me though.

After the pain I went through getting the butterfly...I don't think I could ever get another one.

aggieAXO 01-31-2002 06:22 AM

I like tatoos and have 2 of them, a sunflower on my rt. ankle and a black cat on my left shoulder blade area.

BTW, your butterfly is very pretty.

I was never really into getting my letters on my body but there were sisters that did. It was also very common place to get the ATM logo for Texas A&M.

I plan to get another tatoo at the small of my back but I have been waiting b/c I still remember how painful the cat was-ouch!

AOIIAngel 01-31-2002 07:13 AM

I have a small dolphin on my right ankle, and i really want another one on my lower back, but I can't decide what I want. I know one of my sisters got a small panda on her hip(not a good place in my opinion) that had our letters very small on the paw. She happened to love pandas, and that is our mascot, so she just had the letters added very small in one of his little paws. Very cute. My own opinion on tattoos is if it something you would like and not feel stupid showing off, then get it.

AlphaChiS2K 01-31-2002 10:51 AM

I have a tattoo of the lyre, our mascot... it's very simple, about an inch and a half tall, in black lines on my lower back right hip. No one sees it unless I want them to, except when I wear a bathing suit, which I don't mind. I always said I'd never get one, but now I'm secretly craving another- except I don't know where I'd get it. I like the privacy of the one I have now, and short of getting another in the same place on the other side, there's no where else I could have it done!

I got the lyre because it reminds me of a bigger committement- that no matter what happens in my chapter at AU, AXO is bigger than that- it's the big picture, if you will. :)

stephyteague02 01-31-2002 11:22 AM

How bad does it hurt to get a tattoo on the small of your back? I've heard this is one of the most painful places but then I have also heard it doesn't hurt any worse than getting a tattoo anywhere else on your body. Anyone have any idea? Someday I would love to get a S (in a cursive/ curly Q type font) on the lowest part of my back.

SSS1365 01-31-2002 11:27 AM

I've got a small butterfly that's almost (but not quite) on my butt. Meaning, I can show it to people without mooning them :)

I was thinking of getting a Snoopy tattoo, because I LOVE Snoopy, but then I decided against it. I'm pretty sure I'll never get another tattoo.

alphaxidelta12 01-31-2002 11:50 AM

i got my first tattoo the day of my 18th birthday! i wanted one sooo bad. i got a half moon that is winking and smiling w/ a halo above his head on the front of my ankle. i like where i got it b/c i can show it off if i want too and its in kind of a unique place. most people get theirs on the side of their ankle, but i wanted mine on the front! i have thought about getting something w/ letters in it, but i don't know if i ever will. i knew a guy who had his letters on his ankle and for many reasons, he got kicked out. he had to get a really big tattoo over them b/c they were big and he had to cover them up. my advice is that if you get something w/ letters make them small. don't get too tacky w/ it!

h2oot 01-31-2002 11:53 AM

You asked what others thought--

I don't have a tattoo nor do I plan to get one.

Angels&Arrows 01-31-2002 01:58 PM

I, along with about two thirds of my pledge class, about 20 young ladies got Pi Phi tattoos after initiation, it was a very fun pledge class outing. We have Pi Beta Phi letters in Silver Blue (approx an inch high) with a wine arrow (approx one and a half icnhes long) going through our letters. Mine is on my fight, inside right ankle.

SATX*APhi 01-31-2002 04:10 PM

About my butterfly tattoo: Yeah, it is right above my behind. It is also a little larger than I thought it would be. It is actually like 8-inches wide. And also, thanks to you all who commented on my tattoo being cute.

About wanting to get a tattoo related to my sorority: My big sis has our letters tattooed on her lower back. They are about 1 inch tall, not big at all. Another of our sisters went with her and got the same tattoo. Before I even knew my big sis had a tattoo if our letters, I wanted to get them. But now, I am not too sure if I should get my letters or something else related to my sorority. Of course, there are many in our chapter that disagree with getting your letters tattooed on you. So I am just very confused! And also, I have no idea where to get it, if I do even get one.

SparkliiQTMTSU 01-31-2002 05:12 PM

I have always hated tattoos but now I think I actually want one. I really want to get a teeny tiny fairy b/c I absolutly love fairies IK dont know where Im going to put it though. If anyone has any ideas let me know I dont want it to be visible but I dont want it to hurt too bad either..lol Im a big sissy when it comes to pain.

I have 3 tattos already, and I plan on getting 2 more: one when I graduate nursing school, and also, my Hunny and I are going to get one together. Not each others names or anything, but we want to get the same design. Can't figure out what though...I figure it's ok, because we've dated for 4 years and are going to get married.....

We were "advised" not to get a tattto with our letters on ourselves, but some girls in my pledge class got owls. They were pretty cute.

winnieb 02-01-2002 12:40 AM

looks like I take the cake...

I got my seventh tattoo at Thanksgiving time.
Ffor as long as I can remember I have wanted a tattoo, so when I was 18 I called around town decided what shop to go to. I decided on a guy in town that has been tattooing for 25 or 30 years--and his wife helps him in their shop.
My tattoos are:
#1--Red rose on my hip (this was before I was an Alpha Gam)
#2-- small heart and vine on my right foot
#3-- butterfly added to the right foot
#4-- black tribal piece on my left ankle (by the tendon)
#5-- floral piece on my tailbone that goes hip to hip
#6-- small flower added to the right foot
#7-- butterfly and "star dust" above the floral on my back.

I will probably get more. I personally don't think they hurt--first time I was a bit scared--the sound of the gun got to me the first time. Now I cannot even go into the tattoo place without wanting one--the sound of the gun sparks the desire for another.

I have been to the same guy I started out with --with the exception of the ankle. I went to someone else--was not happy, waited for it to heal and went to my regular guy to have him "clean" the lines up.

KillarneyRose 02-01-2002 01:12 AM

Alphagam-Alum, I sent you a PM :)

Bridget3D 02-01-2002 02:06 AM

I have a cute blue dolphin above my right ankle.

SATX*APhi 02-01-2002 02:57 AM

My tattoo hurt like heck!!! I cried like a baby. :( My butterfly tattoo is HUGE. If I do get something related to my sorority, it is going to be VERY small! And no, no other tattoos for me!! It hurts way too much!!

AOX81 02-01-2002 02:13 PM

Tatoo

I got my first tatoo last May. It is a teal and purple butterfly. I would love to get another one with my sorority letters but I don't think that my husband will be too thrilled with me...he was pretty mad about the first one. Oh well...life goes on.

Have a nice day :)

Unregistered- 02-07-2002 11:09 PM

Mom found out about the new tattoo the other day. She was furious and we haven't spoken to each other for 3 days.

Anyways, I finally got a picture of my new tattoo online. If you scroll all the way to the bottom, you can see it here.

It looks small, but it really takes up a good portion of my lower back.

bluz4 02-07-2002 11:36 PM

i think tattoos are cool and a form of self-expression. you just have to realize that its a permanent thing and make sure that you really want it. plus, it hurts like a pain i've never known before and you have to want the tattoo bad enough to sit through that.

i have four and plan to get at least one more.
1. i have a chinese symbol for "be different" on my upper back where my neck and back meet
2. i have the word "beautiful" in arabic on my lower back right above my butt. sometimes people see it when i bend over or raise my hand and my shirt lifts a little.
3. i have a broken heart on my right hip.
4. i did get my letters on my upper left thigh. i got it with a little kitty cat for my sorority and my line number.

my boyfriend decided that when we get engaged, we will both get the first letter of each other's name in hierogyphics. the first letter of his name is an M which i think it a bird in hieroglyphics. its very detailed so i am not looking forward to that pain.

Peaches-n-Cream 02-08-2002 12:04 AM

I don't have a tattoo, and I don't want one. The tattoos that I have seen here are very pretty. I remember there was a story on the news about a guy from Notre Dame who wanted a Fighting Irish tattoo, but the tattoo artist spelled it "Fighing Irish" instead!
In college there was a fraternity brother who had his letters branded into his arm as a commitment to his fraternity! Ouch!

bruinaphi 02-08-2002 03:59 AM

As many of you know I lost my close friend Wendy last year. She had three tatoos and was planning on getting another on her birthday that year. Instead, a bunch of us got the same tatoo in her honor. It is a curlyque w that goes into an f and has a little heart dotting it. It kind of looks like a little flower. It means Wendy, beloved friend. Mine is on the inside of my left ankle.

Before we lost Wendy I always said I'd never get a tatoo. I think it is something that you have to be prepared to have on your body for the rest of your life. Even though mine is in a place where people can barely see it I still have to cover it at work (my clients are on the older conservative side).

I know a lot of women who have tatoos of their GLO's letters or symbols. I think it is more popular in some places than in others. It's not something that has ever appealled to me but I can understand how it appeals to others.

Around here

Okay - I've waited long enough to post on this topic!

I have a tattoo, and while it's not of my letters (i think there's some rule about that somewhere) it's of the mascot - it's on my right hip - and unless i decide to show you, you're not going to see it - I've had it for almost a year, and even though i still live at home - my parents still do not know about it. The local fraterity here has somewhat of a tradition of getting their letters tattoo'ed on them somewhere along with thier mascot, but i really don't know of any of the national boys w/ tattoos. as for the girls - i can't believe how many of us have tattoos. it just goes to show it's not as taboo as is once was. I'm going to get two more probably, a star on my foot, right on top between my big toe, and my "pointer" toe (right were flip flops would cover it up) and maybe a scorpion (that one is still kinda iffy - i was going to get it instead of the one i have, and backed out at the last second.

just what's on my mind

I don't know if it was a national thing or a chapter thing, but the vast majority of FIJIs at my school had Phi Gamma Delta tattooed on their ankles. Back then, tattoos were much less common than they are now, even for guys so everyone thought they were really exotic! lol

ZetaLuvBunny 02-12-2002 11:37 PM

A few of my sisters have tatoos of the five-point crown. One has it on her lower back, another on the back of her neck. Not sure where other people have them. I think it's a neat idea, but needles scare me!

Hootie 02-13-2002 12:27 AM

Sandy -
I love your tat! It's very pretty!

Okay guys, you have inspired me. A friend and I are going to get tattoos on Friday -- if he wusses out on me I am going to be SO mad but I will do it anyway. I am so excited!! :)

Optimist Prime 02-13-2002 04:42 PM

What do you think would be a better tatto for the first one? A rattle snake or letters?

Letters please! If I see a guy with a rattle snake tattoo I would run and I think many other girls would too!

valkyrie 02-13-2002 05:20 PM

OP, I think it depends on where you would get it -- as in, if you get letters it should be somewhere you can hide if you're, say, going out to get wasted. I wouldn't mind a rattlesnake, but then, maybe I'm weird...snakes can be cute, if done well --

http://www.jadedragontattoo.com/flash/5.html

But I don't like all the skull stuff.

Optimist Prime 02-14-2002 01:56 AM

Yeah...on my leg or lower back

SATX*APhi 02-14-2002 03:35 AM

Valkyrie:

Do you know what kind of tattoo you are going to get?? Any ideas?? Do you know where??

SATX*APhi 02-14-2002 04:16 PM

Thanks for the comment about my butterfly. ;) I like your tattoo idea. It sounds very cute! It is something most likely only you would know the meaning of and could choose to tell its meaning or not. Good luck getting the drawing!

Also, when you do get it, hopefully tomorrow, you need to post a pic! ;)

Eirene_DGP 02-14-2002 08:03 PM

I think I would rather have a sorority mascot or something meaningful rather than sorority letters. I want a Tiger on my shoulder. One of my friends has a hummingbird on her shoulder and the tail feathers go all the way down her back. I like femine stuff like that.

SATX*APhi 02-14-2002 09:02 PM

Yeah, I do not think I am going to get my letters after all. I think I will get a symbol for my sorority, one of our mascots or perhaps something that is on our crest.

valkyrie 02-17-2002 10:05 PM

I did it!!!

Well, I got my tattoo on Friday, and I am SO excited!! I absolutely love it and am so happy that I finally did it (hopefully sometime soon I can take & post a picture). :) The problem (if it's really a problem) is that I'm hooked, and I'm already thinking of ideas for my second tattoo...

SATX*APhi, what symbol do you think you will get? I always thought that somethng ivy related would be very pretty, but what are you thinking, and where will you get it?

SATX*APhi 02-17-2002 10:24 PM

Valkyrie:

Woo Hoo! Way to go. Yes, it would be nice if you took a pic and posted it for us to see. :)

As far as what I am thinking of getting, I was thinking maybe Ursa Major. It is on our crest and it is something only we know the meaning behind. Also, I was thinking something Ivy-related, like you mentioned. Hmmm, maybe A-Phi letters spelt out with ivy vines. Now I am just super confused and don't know what I want. :( I'll be sure to let you know what I get when I get it.
