Just heard. I'm in shock but not very surprised about the suicide rumor.

DrPhil 08-11-2014 07:10 PM

R.I.P. :(

I am sitting here like this

Another example of we don't know what people are going through.

So true. This is such a tragedy.

DrPhil 08-11-2014 07:24 PM

This really bothers me.

AGDee 08-11-2014 07:24 PM

I am so sad to hear this. O Captain my Captain... he was troubled. I remember reading many years ago that he was bipolar and that it was difficult to work with him because he improvised so much they couldn't follow their scripts. The resulting works were genius though. Definitely one of my faves. FisherKing, The Dead Poets Society, Mrs. Doubtfire, Mork & Mindy (dating myself there). So many incredible movies. This is the saddest I've ever been to hear about a celebrity's passing.

Exactly. I'm so sad to hear this. He was always entertaining.

This is so incredibly sad :'(

Co-sign, Mrs. AGDee.

Over on Twitter, even the parody accounts that are not bots, are honoring Mr. Williams.

Can anyone confirm if he was a fraternity man? One of the LXA chapters I follow on Twitter stated that he was a Sigma Nu but I can't find official confirmation of this.

Here's his Oscar win for Good Will Hunting:

I'm completely devastated. I loved Robin Williams' wonderful ability to launch into a character, into a mad ad lib that caused us all to laugh hysterically. I'm a little worried about my DH, who was often mistaken for a younger Robin Williams in years gone by, even being asked for his autograph.

My personal favorites (at least, today) were The Bird Cage, and The Dead Poet Society. Such a tragic day.

HuffPost has a copy of the official statement from the Marin County sheriffs department, coroners division.

My favorite movie of all time!

MaryPoppins 08-11-2014 07:51 PM

May light perpetual shine upon him.

WhiteRose1912 08-11-2014 07:53 PM

I'm stunned. This is difficult to process.

He made his first feature film appearance in Robert Altman's POPEYE (1980).

This film is so delightfully bizarre, I like it, I really like it.

AlwaysSAI 08-11-2014 10:53 PM

RIP, Mr. Williams. You shared the joy of laughter with millions though you harbored demons. I hope you may laugh now; laugh well and rest in peace

I screamed when I found out. I haven't been so shocked or saddened in a long time. Something in my soul is just unsettled.

I grew up watching Mork & Mindy. I had no idea the show had finished before I was even born--I thought I had found this awesome new show no one knew about. :o

PersistentDST 08-11-2014 11:06 PM

I know that he struggled through clinical depression for years. Amazing how talented artists have the ability to mask their pain. I always wish there was a way to save people from themselves...

Prayers to his wife, three kids, family and friends... :(

maconmagnolia 08-12-2014 01:40 AM

This is just heartbreaking. Robin Williams chose to make other people happy when he wasn't even happy himself. RIP to a wonderful actor, and prayers to his family and friends.

Nanners52674 08-12-2014 06:31 AM

I'm normally not torn up about celebrity deaths, but I shead tears over this one. It hurts to think of the pain he was in when he's brought so much joy and luaghter to the world.

DrPhil 08-12-2014 03:34 PM

NPR is airing excerpts of the 2006 Terry Gross Fresh Air interview with Robin Williams. It is interesting in light of what happened.

Kiss a trillion asses, Rush Limbaugh.

33girl 08-13-2014 09:32 AM

I was just thinking about the comparison between him and Bill Murray this morning, because they both have 2 alimonies and a shit ton of kids.

I think if Robin Williams had held out and not done SO many things just for the paycheck, he would have been in a better mental state. If you do what you love, the money gets there.

I also think his on again off again disputes with Disney probably didn't help his reputation in studios' front offices.

DrPhil 08-13-2014 09:38 AM

One good thing has come from the shock and mourning:

More people are calling suicide prevention organizations, suicide hotlines, and mental health organizations (and citing Williams' death or saying they can relate to Williams). This is temporary and fueled by the media but we are hopefully getting closer to breaking the shame and silence.

AZTheta 08-13-2014 09:39 AM

Rush Limbaugh - have you no shame? It is firmly established that you have no brain. Or heart. Or sense. Or decency.

Makes me question if he is human.

So it's his fault? If he'd just done things differently he wouldn't of been suicidal and would still be alive?

I really, truly hope I'm misinterpreting you. He was sick with a mental illness, it's not so simple to fix. I also think it's shit to Monday morning quarterback someone's suicide.

AZTheta 08-13-2014 11:12 AM

An article about what the family is enduring gives me pause.

DrPhil 08-13-2014 11:20 AM

I'm sure 33girl can speak for herself but FWIW, I think this statement is correct because I didn't interpret that post to be anything close to what you did.

33girl 08-13-2014 08:37 PM

Yes, you are misinterpreting me. The shrink in The Virgin Suicides put it best when he said suicide is a gun and the various things in life (clinical depression, substance abuse, relationships etc) are bullets in the chambers and the more chambers that are full, the more likely you are to kill yourself. This was another chamber that was full.

DrPhil 08-13-2014 10:08 PM

Williams' rep disputes rumors of money woes

Got it now, sorry for the misunderstanding.

It's now being reported that he was in the early stages of Parkinson's.

At my theater, we have Screenvision pre-shows, which as many of you have seen in various incarnations at theaters in your area ( Regal Cinemas has First Look, for example); well, Screenvision is running a short 30 second tribute to Mr. Williams.
