New York, here I come!
Finally! Some years ago I was supposed to go to NYC but that didn't work out. Well, I will be there for the PhotoPlus Expo in late October.
Places I plan to go to visit include: World Trade Center B&H Photo NY Public Library All the outdoor ice rinks if they are open Ice rink at Chelsea Piers Lady Liberty Central Park Coney Island The Hamptons ( if time permits) Martha's Vineyard (if time permits) I have 7 days. Any suggestions? Oh! ETA MTV Tonight Show Harlem |
I'm a Long Island girl and I don't get into the City much, but I must suggest Bryant Park. I love it there in the winter with all the little shops. There is an ice rink too as well as one in Central Park. I don't know if they are open in October though, the weather in October can be warm one day then cold the next, even late in the month. I remember one Halloween in the 70s and another with snow.
The Museum of Natural History or The Met would be nice to visit too. In October there will be plenty of Halloween attractions if you are into that. Here is a list of events for October. http://http://www.events12.com/newyork/october/ |

The New York Public Library is one of my favorite places to visit. I like poking around in libraries all over the place and the NYPL is one of the most impressive. If you can, take in a Broadway show (we usually see what shows have half-price tickets).
If you're near the UN, take a peak at the Beekman Tower Hotel. It was originally built in the 1920s as a residence for NPC women. At one time, it was the tallest building in the neighborhood. Now it is one of the smallest structures. |
If you have the time to give, Ellis Island is really moving. Also, you can fully appreciate the Statue of Liberty either from Battery Park or on your way to Ellis Island. No need to actually step onto the island unless looking up her nose is on your bucket list. But plan at least 4 hours for Ellis Island and 6 is probably more realistic unless you get lucky with crowds.

Fifth Avenue! Especially Tiffany & Co. Unfortunately, Fortunoff is long gone. :(
The Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art are two of my favorites. Also check out the Frick Collection at 70th and 5th. A lovely collection, but small enough that you can go through it in a couple of hours and not get "museumed out". Rockefeller Center is also a good place to visit. You won't get to see all the Christmas decorations, but you also won't get trampled - once the tree is lit, it's a zoo. |
Take a stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge. It's about a mile, relaxing, you can watch the cars zip by under you, it's great for taking pictures, and you can have lunch in Brooklyn when you get across. It's one of my favorite things to do in NYC.. and it's free :)
Two other free things that I enjoy: the Staten Island ferry and the High Line park (http://www.thehighline.org/) Have fun! |
Very off beat track:
71st and Continental, Forest Hills - Spiderman and moe.ron's neighbourhood It's also the neighbourhood where the US Open used to be played. :D:D:D:D |
Martha's Vineyard is **quite** a hike from New York. Going there will eat up an entire day, at least; if you take the Seastreak, it's a 5 hour trip, one way (http://www.seastreak.com/marthas.aspx). I might give MV its own trip another time.

Seconding Sleep No More. :D
Definitely the Met or Museum of Natural History. Please note that these museums have "suggested admission" - so if you want to go to the Met but don't have $25 to shell out, you can pay what you wish. Staten Island Ferry. You get great views of downtown Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, and it's free! Also, the Strand! Best used bookstore anywhere. |
Martha's Vineyard is in MA, you'd have to drive through CT, the tip of RI, then down to Cape Cod, MA to get the ferry to MV. The ferry will be subject to the weather and the water can be very choppy at that time of year. It will be very chilly and windy in MV, and only the locals will be there and a lot of stores are only open seasonally.
However, if you don't mind it being in the 50s during the day and 30s at night, it is lovely (I'm a native New Englander so I love the beach at any time of year!). If you are looking at the steamship from NYC, I don't think it runs in late October, but double check. |

My dad is native to Brooklyn so I've been there a few times-if you do go to Brooklyn then Cuccio's Bakery has delicious cookies and L & B Spumoni Gardens has delicious pizza. If you do feel strangely compelled to drive the 3+ hours out to Rhode Island, for some reason, I can recommend lots of fun things to do there too. |

If you can make it to Prospect Park, Cataldo's on Vanderbilt and Dean has the best pizza. They were on an episode of A Stand Up Mother on WE, and they also have an amazing niece in Detroit who is a Phi Mu ;) |
Wow, I totally missed the Martha's Vineyard thing. Don't waste your time going there on this trip. There is a ferry/boat that leaves out of New York, but it's a long ride. It won't be worth it. Wait until you take a trip to New England (in the spring/summer) to do that :)

Hey everyone, THANK YOU. I'm going to note all suggestions (actually bookmark this thread). I'm also going to save MV as a separate trip.
I'm thinking about applying to graduate J-schools so I'll swing through Columbia CUNY and NYU. |

For MV, I'll keep the travel info in mind. I think for that trip, I'd want to stay at least 2 weeks. Make it worth the trip across country.

My friend just posted this on Facebook...
17 Secret Places in NYC You Didn't Know About (But Should): http://blog.suitey.com/17-secret-pla...JUBdU.facebook |
Wow! Thanks for that list. I'm there often & lived there part time a few years ago and tried to take in everything, but several on the list are now new must-sees for me.

Yeeeaaaaah! i've upgraded my registration so at this point, all I have left to pay for are excursions, food, etc. *Doin' the dance*

My best friend lives in Harlem so I go there frequently. I think people have covered a lot of what I was going to say. If you are a hoops fan you HAVE to go to Madison Square Garden. I second the recommendation for the Natural History Museum as well. There is such cool stuff in Central Park. Sorry if I repeated anything!
Some restaurants I recommend: Amy Ruth's (Soul Food) Their chicken and waffles are everything (Harlem) Dallas BBQ (Multiple Locations) Gyu-Kaku (Japanese BBQ) You actually cook your own food at your table. My best friend worked there for awhile. So delish! (Multiple Locations) Only negative thing I'll say is...Make sure you keep up with the news about bedbugs on certain trains if you use it for transportation! |

When a dear friend of mine took her family to NYC she went through and color tabbed Gerry Frank's Where to Find it, Buy It, Eat It in New York. One of the best guide books for NYC.
http://www.newyorkcityguidebook.net/ And if in Mid-town, do NOT eat there. Better food, better pricing over on 9th Ave starting at about 42nd Street and North. |

FYI my hotel is near the east river, a few blocks from CP, so I guess Lower ES? |
Hpe you have a great time!

And from how you described your Hotel location, you are either Upper East Side or Yorkville. That can be high rent area=some expensive restaurants. |

When are you going? CandyCab is getting a new vehicle at the end of the month so I'd expect he'll be back in business by sometime in November. http://candycabnyc.com/
Also, if you're into food. There's a guy on instagram who posts pictures of food and his son, http://instagram.com/foodbabyny. Everything looks delicious!!! Like, everything! He does lots of desserts, if sweet is your thing. I really don't understand how the dad stays so slim. |
