Kohl's

For some reason im thinking i already asked this question, but i searched and found nothing. Anyway, there are building a Kohl's department store near my house. Before now, i had never heard of it. I hear it is based in Dallas?? I just wanted to know if there is a Kohl's near anyone else's house. What kind of dept. store is it? Like a foley's, dillards, and does it have clinique?? It would be so awesome driving the whole 4 minutes there and getting my make-up instead of the 25-30 min. drive to the mall!

AGDLynn 01-26-2002 10:45 AM

Terrific!

Kinda like Dillards! The Kohls here doesn't sell cosmetics.

cash78mere 01-26-2002 11:31 AM

kohl's doesn't sell makeup.

and they are way overpriced. but a very pretty store and can have good sales.

i don't know how to describe it becaue i've never heard of dillards or foleys! they don't have them in ny.

the clothes aren't really trendy. no big name brands. at least not that i'm familiar with. if i want to buy a dress i go to the juniors(!!) because the women's department is kinda old fogey. but the juniors department is kinda nice and if i can fit in it, anyone can!

they have electronics, clothes, jewelry, kids books, seasonal items (christmas, bahing suits), etc...

hope this helps! pretty nice store, but don't expect to get all your shopping done there like you can do at macy's or hecht's (which i wish would come to ny!):D

Miami1839 01-26-2002 11:45 AM

Bucutie, Cash78mere is right on. We have a Kohls here in town and its ok. Its got some great sales. I'd say its about the same as Belk(an east coast chain department store) or a little better than JC Penny. Most of the better department stores like Macys or Nordstroms are up in northern virginia.

There's a Kohl's near my apartment....about 5 minutes away. I've only been in there once. They were having an awesome sale. I got gloves for 50% off.:D Didn't see any clothes that I liked though. I don't remember if it had a make-up counter though

DeltAlum 01-26-2002 03:48 PM

They've just opened a bunch of Kohl's in Colorado. We were familiar with them from when we lived in Baltimore many years ago.

I guess I think they're better than discount stores (K-Mart, etc.), but not on par with the better department stores.

volgirl2376 01-26-2002 03:50 PM

We have lots of Kohls stores here - not really my bag - it reminds me of a more upscale Goody's (if you all have those). Ive only been there once, because their commerical and theme song irritate me so much lol - I have issues ;)

PenguinTrax 01-26-2002 05:57 PM

Kohl's is based out of Wisconsin. They are a lower-end department store - they sell both name brands and house brands. Their sales are very good, but their every-day prices can be comparable to another department store selling the same items.

Virtual Violet 01-26-2002 06:21 PM

Think (slightly) upscale Marshalls or TJ Maxx, and you have Kohls.
They also have small kitchen appliances, etc., bedding, towels and other household decorative items.

I used to write about Goody's when I worked for the Knoxville News-Sentinel in the early 90s. The stores weren't all that, I never shopped there. We don't have Kohls in California yet, to my knowledge.

ZZ-kai- 01-27-2002 04:24 AM

Senator Herb Kohl owns Kohls Dept. store....and he owns the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team, and he owns Kohls Grocery....

In a nut shell...Herb Kohl owns a whole lotta stuff in Wisconsin.

I don't care what people say about 'Kohls'.....it is a great place to get great deals on great clothes.

If you are looking for Maceys, then you have found the wrong place, but give Kohls a chance....it is alright.

Herb Kohl is the shiznit, and Kohls was founded in Wisconsin.

Miami1839 01-27-2002 10:22 AM

Very Cool Bro. I never knew that. Your right its not a Macys and definitely a cool store :)

KillarneyRose 01-27-2002 05:08 PM

We have Kohl's here in suburban Baltimore. It reminds me of Uptons which I shopped at when I lived in Virginia Beach.

It is a bit overpriced though, if you go in expecting a Wal-Mart/Target kind of place.

33girl 01-27-2002 09:02 PM

Kohl's is between Target and whatever your local Federated and/or May Company department store is (that would be Foley's in your case, bucutie). They sell Levi's and other similar brands, for less than you would pay at the bigger department stores. They have cologne but not cosmetics. (btw cash78mere, Hechts = Filene's or Kaufmann's, depending where in NY you are. It's all May Company.)

OMG Tracy, I have actually been to Upton's when my best friend lived in Columbia. I was bummed to find it gone on a visit back there. :( While we're on department stores, this is a shot in the dark: has anyone from Virginia ever heard of a place called Montaldo's?

cash78mere 01-27-2002 11:28 PM

Thanks 33girl!

It's kinda funny though because I have never heard of Kaufmans either!! I have heard of Filene's Basement, but don't know where one it. I think I've just seen the commercials!

At the Kohl's near me, the name brands (Levi's, etc) aren't any cheaper than in the big dept stores. :(

shadokat 01-28-2002 12:06 AM

There's a Kohl's right down the street from me, and while the stuff at regular price is too much, on sale, you can get some good stuff! I got tons of home stuff and some great earrings there 2 weeks ago.

dzrose93 01-28-2002 11:33 AM

Kohl's just jumped into the Atlanta area about a year ago, and I LOVE THAT STORE! I find awesome deals everytime I go there. Last week, I bought myself a workout outfit - Nike shirt and long pants - for $23. And, around Christmas time, they had a huge sale on picture frames. I got a really nice one for my Nana for $5 -- it was originally $24.99, and several for my boyfriend.

LeslieAGD 01-28-2002 11:42 AM

Kohls is just like Mervyn's (if you have that).

bucutie02 01-28-2002 03:53 PM

we do have mervyn's here, but we dont have some of the other stores you guys mentioned. I think they are going to open it up in a couple of months.

So im guessing its an alright store with awesome sales! Too bad they dont have clinique.

Cant wait until they open it so i can go see for myself what its all about!;)

lifesaver 01-29-2002 04:08 AM

All the women on my campus are swooning because they just broke ground on "The Shops at La Cantera," a mall ACROSS from campus. Please, lets have more traffic inthe area. The 20,000 students arent enough already. Hows about a mall. Yeah, good idea. So all next to each other lets have a major university, Diamond Shamrock's corporate headquarters, a mall and Six Flags. Yeah, all within a mile of each other. Cool. Anyway, anchor tenants to include Lord and Taylor, Nordstroms and Niemun Marcus. Ladies, start your credit cards....

AngelPhiSig 01-31-2002 01:58 PM

Hello, your friendly Kohl's empolyee here... (which is funny cos I worked with a lot of Greeks too! My little worked at another one in Pittsburgh too!) I dont think we are over priced, I think we have great priced compared to other places I shop. Oh well... I was just happy I saw Kohl's on here!!!

<3

There's someting better than a regular Target?!?!?!

:D

TriSigmaTX 02-17-2002 10:28 PM

Kohl's is awesome and they're in Kansas City, Dallas, everywhere I've been....or am.
Overpriced? No way. Good stuff, but now that I'm getting a little older I can't shop in the Juniors much anymore ;(

SATX*APhi 03-06-2004 08:43 PM

Before we got one in my home town, I remember someone telling me they worked there and for months I thought it was an auto part store. I have no idea. I've been to Kohl's a couple of times since we got one and they had huge sales both times. I don't think I'd go shopping there if they weren't having a sale though.

(wow, I just realized this is a 2 yr old bump)

RioLambdaAlum 03-07-2004 12:43 AM

I love when they have sales! I get some kick butt deals when they have awsome sales! Plus they have some cute picture frames, I love picture frames.

Sister Havana 03-07-2004 12:48 AM

Kohl's rocks! They do have great sales. I love their 50% off sales the best, and I got a great outfit for my Jaycee formal banquet on the 80% off clearance rack in January...I spent $25 on it!

I go there far too often. :D

CatStarESP4 03-07-2004 02:44 AM

Kohl's recently opened a store in my area. I haven't been there yet, but I may check it in the near future.

AlphaFrog 03-07-2004 02:51 AM

For juniors they have brands like MUDD and Zanadi (Same as JC Penny or Fashion Bug)

They also have cheaper jewlery (I don't think they carry anything more expensive then an amethyst or a lab-created ruby, but then again it's been awhile since I've been there)

They have shoes too...
And generally some gadgets that look really cool, but really aren't practical....

cutiepatootie 03-07-2004 12:30 PM

The only time i shop at kohls is when the mother of all shoppers (literally my mom is a shopping diva goddess) calls me the night before and tells me be ready at 8 am to pick me up and takes me with her to go hit a good Kohls sale.

They are overpriced in my opinion and very much like mervyns but when khols has a sale watch out!

PM_Mama00 03-07-2004 01:49 PM

That's funny cuz our Kohl's isn't expensieve at all! If I need a picture frame or stuff for my room, I go there. And they ALWAYS have sales going on.

Add in slightly upscale Target...and you got it! I have one right by my house here in Ohio!!

AOcutiePi4ever 03-07-2004 05:54 PM

i dont really like khols. think of it as an upscale kmart. quite honestly i prefer target over khols (i love target). khols is similar to belks, but belks is nicer then khols, but light years worse then perisians. so i guess on a scale it goes-
kmart - khols - belk- perisians (and in my opinion ----- TARGET!!!!!!!

Dionysus 03-07-2004 06:00 PM

Friends don't let friends buy Kohl's.

cutiepatootie 03-07-2004 06:57 PM

i LOOOOVE target! i don't know if there is a greatland target or a "super"target in so calif .... if there was i think i would be there than being on here talking with you all! :D hehehe

My very pregnant with twins sister in law ( yeah my brother got that right) she works for target ( i should ask her ...duh about a greatland in so cal) and gets me discounts all the time. I told her she better register for their lullabye club where else am i going to shop for her baby shower present without her discount!

Walmart is this yr bringing Supercenters to california....alll i have to say to that is ITS ABOUT STINKIN' TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

MeLikey 03-07-2004 10:45 PM

I don't shop at Kohl's but the one time I did go with my mom, I noticed that they had a lot of nice Christmas ornaments.

I thougt Walmart Supercenters were everywhere. There are like 3 Super Walmarts near my apartment. Never occured to me that not all states have them:o

cutiepatootie 03-08-2004 12:34 AM

California blocked it for the longest time because of the georcery unions but they are coming in graually. They just built a brand new state of the art wal mart distruction center near by and so thats how they are coming and no one can stop them

Ok I have a question and maybe I'm an idiot but I've never heard of a Walmart distruction center? Is it a supercenter or something?

It's a shame most people don't know the ins and outs about the "Walmart world."

If you say Walmart in front of my Urban Geography professor, he'll have a heart attack.

Many people are against Walmart because of what they've done to small -town businesses. They sold their products at a smaller price, so people would go to Walmart instead of the neighborhood store. That in turn put those stores out of business.

Now, the people who owned those stores and worked there, made a good amount of money. After their stores closed, some had to work at Walmart because it was pretty much the only business left. Walmart pays these employees not even close to what they were making at the neighborhood stores.

Ok I kinda summarized everything we learned about Walmart, but I have a whole handout about the negatives about Walmart stores.
