Accident Prone

I'm sitting here with second degree burns on my "good" hand because I was an idiot! I forgot to put the canister under the coffee maker. (4 hours of sleep mind you) went out to get the paper and when I came back, coffee and coffee grounds were all over the place. I pulled the plug and lifted the coffee maker and spilled the steaming water all over my hand. I do stupid things like this from time to time and am to the point where biorhythm (physical critical)seems to bear a lot of truth.
Now, I know lifesave has a lot of accidents with his bike, is anyone else accident prone?
Any new "ouchies" lifesaver?

James 01-26-2002 11:33 AM

2nd degree burns? Are you serious or exagerating a bit? Because second degree is no joke. Make sure you take care of your hand!

Miami1839 01-26-2002 11:48 AM

I was very accident prone as a kid. My brother was too. My mom had a headache parenting us in okinawa LOL Many trips to the ER. LOL One time my brother(I think he was 4 at the time) stuck a screw up his nose and we were about to have a typhoon. So, that made for an eventful day.

SilverTurtle 01-26-2002 12:17 PM

My brother and I were both very accident prone kids. We've probably broken a combined 15 bones or so! He always got in car crashes, which were never his fault (even according to the police who filled out the accident reports). Which means I have to tell this funny story:

I got into one car crash, and it involved my neighbor's house  !!!! Something about my accelerator sticking, and me frantically trying to turn the wheel, and just clipping the edge of their brand new kitchen. So I hit the house hard enough to shake me up a bit. My mom heard a big noise, so she's out on the front porch looking up and down the street. But I was behind the house. And my sister, who saw the whole thing from her bedroom window, comes down and tells my mom, who came running out. It was really crazy. I promise I'm a good driver! :D

About 2 months ago my mom calls me up and tells me their was this big thud early in the morning, and the whole house shook... and that same neighbor had hit our house with her car! !!!

Anyways, I sort of out-grew the accident proneness, although I have my occassional moment. We drove my mom crazy when we were little. Makes for some good stories, though! ;)

The greatest part of my hand is first degree, but I must have hit the burner or something because I blistered and lost some skin...Oh I get sick thinking of it. Have some silver sulphadiazine on it and aloe vera on the rest. That should do it. Thanks for the thought though!

SilverTurtle That is sooo funny! Turn about is fair play???

Miami1839-my son stuck one of those little animal sponges up his nose and the Dr. didn't even catch it. He gave him an RX. We went to my sisters house and she was so disgusted she put a kleenex to him and yelled BLOW-and out it came!

The1calledTKE 01-26-2002 01:28 PM

I broke 2 wrist and a leg in various years as a child.

Miami1839 01-26-2002 01:58 PM

Justamom,

Wow, what a situation . My mom took my brother to a navy hospital nearby and they didnt have the proper specialist so we had to drive to the air force base on the island where they called in an ear/nose/throat doctor. He got out the screw and when we got back to the house. We had four conditions based on the level of winds. condition 4, 3, 2, 1, condition 1 caution, and emergency. When we walked into the house they just announced emergency. LOL :D

One time comes to mind when I forgot something for soccer practice and tripped over these steps in front of my house. My chin landed on the edge of one of those steps and split my chin open. We had an okinawan maid who was like a nanny so she helped me out and then my dad took me to the hospital. just had some stiches and it healed back in no time. boy, do military hospitals have long waits.

Let's see...in the 1st grade I was jumpin' rope in the rain and fell down and scraped up my knees up pretty bad-- getting the asphalt pieces from my knees didn't feel too great! That left my knees all scarred up.

A couple times after ballet classes around 2nd and 3rd grade- I was running around and fell down...my bloody knees got to dry up with my leotards on...that was a hell of a time getting those off.

Around 8th grade I pulled my back. That hurt like hell. Ever since then, I've been prone to back pulls. :(

ZTAngel 01-26-2002 02:14 PM

I am very accident prone! My aunt and my grandmother claim that it's genetic because the two of them are also klutzy. I've had few broken toes and I broke my elbow about a year and half ago.
I tend to lose my footing a lot. It started when I was about 5. My family was in Hiroshima and there was a reflecting pond. I accidently fell in. My parents had to search for clothing to buy because the ones I was wearing were soaked and it was about 60 degrees outside. The problem was that my parents would have my grandmother ship clothes to us from the United States. The Japanese clothing did not fit me because the clothing there is made smaller due to the fact that the Japanese tend to be slightly shorter than Americans. My parents found me a pair of pants and shirt that, lengthwise, was perfect but, widthwise, it was way too big. My pants kept falling down the whole day. My dad has that on video; he seems to always want to show it to my boyfriends.
Then, when I was 13, I was at Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. There is a zoo at the top and you can feed the animals. I was at the deer exhibit. There was a fence then a moat of water and then the land for the deer. I leaned over the fence to throw the food but leaned too far. I went head first into the moat of water!!! A couple of people had to pull me to my safety. I had cuts and bruises all over my arms and legs that have left scars to this day! A constant reminder of my accident-prone self and my humiliation. :p

juniorgrrl 01-26-2002 02:25 PM

I am the queen spaz.

When I was 7 I broke my elbow in the growth plate, from falling off my bike. Most kids when they fall, they put their arms out straight. Not me, I landed directly on the tip of my elbow, breaking it off and requiring surgery. I'm lucky my right arm grew to a normal length.

When I was 10 I broke my foot by (dumbass) running around in circles.

When I was 13 I sprained my foot by (even more dumbass) running from my room to the living room and back to tell my mom I had beaten a special level in Super Mario World.

In my senior musical, we did the Will Rogers Follies. The set for the show is a giant follies staircase. Well, the opening musical number required us to go up the stairs and exit in the middle of the number, to return later in the song. I missed the top step on the back side of the stairs, and fell head over heels down the other side, about a 7 to 10 foot drop. That sucked, I was covered in cuts. My ass was green the next day from bruises.

Last spring, I fell down the stairs in two different buildings in one week. The second time I fell I bruised the hell outa my back and couldn't move much for a day or two. That was fun.

Last night at the Ice Skating rink, I didn't fall on the ice one time. But I did fall trying to sit down. Without skates on, mind you. The walls are lined with movie-theater style chairs that fold up when you sit down. I stood up for somethng and then sat back down and fell right on my ass.

Miami1839 01-26-2002 02:26 PM

I know exactly what your talking about with the japanese clothes.

This summer I had enough accidents to last me a lifetime! I had never been in a car accident, (except for a very close call on I-95 when a truck drifted from the southbound lane, was going so fast he went airborn from driving through the ditch-like median, crashed into the northbound lane, only 20 feet in front of us, and bounced into the brush on the right hand shoulder), until the middle of July. I was driving down a parking lot aisle, when this idiot swings through empty parking spots from the next lane over and smashes right into my back passenger side door. Wait, I take that back...my parents back door, yeah I was driving moms car. Then, a week later, I'm driving home from the beach with my little brother, and I slow down at a yellow light, which the car in front of me goes through, as it turns red, so of course, I am stopping. This lady behind me, rear ends me, pretty bad, maybe she thought I was going to run the red light?! I'm embarrassed to have said what I did in front of my little brother, but I was incredulous and extremely pissed that another person had hit me! Talk about bad luck huh?

This topic hits soooo close to home! I am so accident-prone that its the running family joke!

A few years ago, I was in the shower and dropped the bar of soap. As I was lifting it up, I slammed the back of my head against the porcelain fixture...my roommate found me at the bottom of the tub, lol. That was my first experience with a concussion and whiplash.

Then in 1997, I was in an head-on hit and run automobile accident, which gave me a concussion, whiplash, and put me on crutches. This is followed by two auto accidents, in 1999 and 2000, where I was rear-ended so hard I was pushed into cars in front of me. Unfotunately, my poor back couldn't take it anymore: I was diagnosed with trauma-induced fibromyalgia in October.

And a couple of months ago, I also gave myself second degree burns on my hand from cooking...so JAM, believe me, I feel your pain! Although the burn has healed, you can still easily see where I was burnt because its still pink.

I'm sure there are a ton more examples I could give you all, but this is just what comes to mind off the top of my head!

Re: Accident Prone

Well, as I sit here typing I've got--rotator cuff damage on my right side, tendonitis in my left elbow, two broken toes on my left foot and a HUGE bruise on my ass! LOL

I've always been a klutz/accident prone.

JAM--OUCH! I hope your hand feels better soon!

KillarneyRose 01-27-2002 05:02 PM

JAM, I'm sorry to hear about your hand :( How painful burns are! Unfortunately, I know this from lots of experience. For everyone's amusement and viewing pleasure, please allow me to catalog why I will never get to be a hand model:

The Pilsbury Biscuits Episode
Had just moved to New York, hadn't yet started my job so had no health insurance. Went grocery shopping and discovered when I unpacked the groceries that the cashier had apparently forgotten to pack someone's Pilsbury Biscuits in their bag and had put it in mine instead. Cool! Free biscuits! I tried to unpeel the canister but the paper came off and canister remained intact. Soooo, I got a butter knife and sawed away at the sucker. Knife slipped, cut my left hand right above the knuckle on my pointer finger. $434.00 on my AmEx for the emergency room, 4 stitches and a nasty looking v shaped scar 11 years later!

The Popcorn Incident
Moved in with boyfriend --> husband. He was on the ship, I was home alone. I wanted popcorn but he didn't have a popcorn maker. I decided to use a pot. Trying to hold lid onto pot and shake at same time. Pot starts to fall to floor, stupid me tries to catch pot. Second degree burns to palm of my left hand. Once again caught between health insurance coverage; luckily boyfriend --> husband picked up doctor bill for me.

Painful Bike Ride
Not much to tell here; riding my bike after a rain one fall. Rode through a pile of leaves. Was very slick. Wiped out. Kickstand impaled me just to the left of my right shin. Very odd kickstand-shaped scar resulted.

Why 2 Year-Olds Shouldn't Have Scissors
One Sunday afternoon, we were returning from an outing and hubby wanted to stop into his office to pick up something. He was in there and so I set up my daughters at his secretary's desk to let them draw. I didn't notice the wicked huge scissors the secretary had in her pencil holder, but my 2 year-old did. She grapped them by the handle, one in each hand. Scared the sheet out of me, of course, so I grapped for them. She closed the wicked huge scissors over the tip of my right ring finger. I passed out, vaguely remember John carrying me to the car. Another emergency room trip ensued. Words simply cannot describe the pain involved. Vicodin is a wonderful drug. My finger is still kind of funky looking at the top.

Turkey Isn't Always Good for You
When cooking Thanksgiving dinner this past year, I was taking out the turkey and my hand brushed up against the top heating element of the oven. I have a hideous scar there about the size of a quarter.

And these are the injuries I can only think of off the top of my head. No wonder my childhood nickname was "Grace"; I simply don't HAVE any!

ZetaLuvBunny 01-27-2002 05:23 PM

Should have my picture in the dictionary next to "klutz"

Just call me Miss Klutz, because I:

---trip on the way to classes all the time
---spill food on myself while eating (bib, anyone?)
---drop stuff all the time
---run into things so much that my shins & elboes are always bruised
---defy gravity by falling *UP* the stairs a lot

That's just the tip of the iceburg! I do a lot of other klutzy things, but I can't think of them right now.

amycat412 01-28-2002 02:11 AM

Some more, since before I only listed current injuries, lol

7thgrade--sliced into my thumb with a blade that I was using to try and peel up some contact paper in a drawer in our new house--you can still see the scar.

9th grade-- while practicing dance routine and jumps and kicks for cheerleading tryouts, I did this twisty jump thing we needed to know how to do for tryouts and miscalulated the distance to the living room wall and banged into it and broke my big toe. Tryouts were 2 days later, all the girls and all the judges knew about my toe, so everytime I did a jump and landed the whole gym groaned, but I never broke my smile and made the team despite the toe, or perhaps BECAUSE of the toe!

Homecoming week-- came running out of the gym after practice to get to class, I was late-- and tripped and went flying on my face--sliding across cement in senior hall on my face. Lovely.

Summer after 9th grade-- at cheer camp--Cheering on a field at UCSD, did a jump, one foot hit solid ground, the other hit a hole in the grass, twisted my ankle.

10th grade-- at cheer practice, practicing a kick and kicked so high I threw my back out.

11th grade -- was at a party, a bunch of us were sitting on the back of a couch--everyone but me had been drinking (I was driver that night) and the couch tipped over and all the drunks got out of the way quick enough but not me, it landed on my ankle and bruised the ankle bone, ouch.

12th grade - basketball season. Practcing a half time routine that involved simultaneous back handsprings. Um, mine didn't make it and I landed on the gym floor knees first -- ended up w fluid on my knee.

Related to above -- doc put me on Naprosyn, which made me dizzy as hell, and as I was preparing to HOP down the stairs to my next class I got so dizzy I blacked out and tumbled down the stairs--luckily no new serious injuries, but lots of bruises. To this day as soon as doc says are you allergic to any meds I say NAPROSYN IS EVIL. lol

College-- various drinking related injuries--some really world class brusies. A few Ski related knee injuries. Memorable fall down the front stairs right before a rush party--rushees were literally standing out side the door and I go head over heels tumbling down the stairs. SIgh.

1992-- KILLARNEY ROSE, this will sound familiar-- I had just started my new job, had no health insurance yet. Got home from work, was cutting a piece of bread w a regular old dinner knife. Bread was hard, I was applying considerable force-- knife slipped, I cut my index finger clear thru at the joint--almost cut it all the way off. I almost fainted when I saw it. But it didn't hurt--I had cut the nerves too. NO one else was home from work yet, I was calling and leaving messages all over town, I DID NOT want to go in an ambulance and as I drove a stickk shift and it was my right hand, there would be no dirivng myself. So off to UCLAs ER we went. They did a GREAT job reattaching my finger though it did take about 10 hours and my friends were stuck in the waiting room watching the Olympics. I was wearing my USC class of 91 t shirt when this happened--so the docs did give me crap for that! LOL That scar is buried in the joint and hard to see, thankfully--and now, 10 years later I have gotten SOME feeling back in it.

1994 on way home from a Christmas party with then boyfriend==party was around the block from his place in Venice Beach--so we were walking, we were WASTED and I slipped and hit the cement with my bottom-- bruised my tailbone and could not sit right for literally YEARS.

1996 -- running, tripped, twisted knee, tore miniscus cartilige. Crutches for a looooong time

1999 -- Car accident 1/25. Weather was rainy. I am a HORRIBLE weather driver. Rear ended a Cherokee with my VW. I was probably going 40. I broke my wrist when the airbad deployed and threw my wrist at the window at 200mph. I also fractured 2 ribs and my collarbone-- ALL FROM THE AIRBAGS.

2000- Christmas Day. At my aunt's house. Taking a family photo. Wall Candle Sconce thing. My waist length hair. Hair caught fire. I am walking away from scene of photo--smell that funky something HUMAN is burning smell at same time I catch my reflection in glass of picture on wall and see my back on fire. Well, I'm not feeling anything and since I know from previous experience that if it doesn';t hurt its BAD, and it doesn't occur to me its my HAIR, I am all trying to take my sweater off by peeling it off my shoulders because I knew if my sweater was on fire and I took it off over my head, I'd catch my hair on fire-- well all this took place over about a 2 second period and my cousin Tommy started patting down my back w a napkin and put my hair out and then i realized it was my hair. DEVASTATION insued. 5 inches gone from a chunk in the back and my back was burned too. Hair has grown back nicely and this Christmas if there were candles on the wall, my hair was in a hairclip. LOL

And now the present injuries--the elbow, shoulder, toes and HUGE BRUISE on my derriere. :)

These are just off the top of my head--that's the sad part!

I am a hazard to myself sometimes! And yes, my family calls me Grace too--for my lack of it!

KayDeeCareBear 01-28-2002 07:11 AM

I am SO wonderfully accident prone. After spraining my knee last semester, then my shoulder, I busted my butt to get all the work done for the two art classes. Finally! I was caught up! Hooah, right? NO! Because I went into lithography and promptly dropped a litho stone on my hand, breaking two fingers. >.< Needless to say, I took an incomplete in a couple classes that time.

Other than that, I like to drop things, stub toes, slide into second the wrong way, thouroughly scratching up my thigh and shin... you know, the 'Normal' stuff, aye? Heh.

justamom 01-28-2002 03:00 PM

Please forgive me ladies, but I'm laughing SOOO hard I'm crying!

I now bow to the queens of klutz!!! Never again will I presume to hold that honor! Y'all can duke it out, but from here it looks like a tie!

My hand is a color I can't describe...really red but like I tried to cover it up with mud. I won't go into the really gross parts. Anyone ever see the Dick Van Dyke show where Laura dyed her hands black? I have to go to a formal this wekend. Are gloves in style?

AGDLynn 01-28-2002 07:36 PM

Are y'all psychic??

We have a split level house..so this morning, I am walking down the second set with a coat, OJ in cup, bagel, lunch bag and pocketbook. Somehow I missed a step and went tumbling down, luckily it was only about 4 steps. OJ WENT EVERYWHERE!!

Boy, I've never heard hubby get out of the bed so fast!

Luckily, everything seems to be okay. My foot has been tingling all day so it will probably be very sore tomorrow.

We were married in May 99. On July 5th we were down at Calloway Gardens enjoying the "beach". On the way back, I stumbled and sprained my ankle which was swollen/sore for about 3 weeks. Finally cured of that. Then middle of August, woke up with pinched neck nerve which hurt for 2 months. Told hubby I wanted to go back to being engaged..I hurt less! Luckily I had switched to his insurance so I didn't have to drive 45 miles 3 times a week for therapy.

Truly want to avoid stairs!! I now take the elevator at work even though it is way out of the way! ;) :)

amycat412 01-28-2002 07:44 PM

LOL Stairs!

My last apartment my back door went right out to a steep set of stairs into the backyard and garage area.

AT LEAST once a month I'd step off the first step and go tumbling down the rest of them, cursing the whole way--as I would go flyling past my downstairs neighbor's bedroom window she'd always stick her head out, laughing because it would be the 10th, 11th, 19th time I'd fallen down the stairs and be all "You OK or do I need to call the paramedics"

LOL

Dionysus 08-14-2002 08:21 PM

Accident prone? Yes. :o

I've outgrown a lot of it fortunately. But, behind the wheel it's an entirely different story. Eventhough I've never got into a "real" accident (thank goodness) before, I've been known to: side swipe mail boxes, drive off the road, back into garage doors, drive up on curbs, come inches from hitting pedestrians, and it almost never fails whenever I back into a parking place or parallel park an innocent vehicle gets damaged. :(

ZTABullwinkle 08-14-2002 10:45 PM

I am the original Hop Along Cassidy in my family. I tore up my knee jumping out of a stopped-turned off-Go Kart at work... Hurt like the devil! The result? Six knee surgeries and arthritis. Eventually, a knee replacement will be needed.

Yes, I can't stand go-karts anymore. Haven't been in one since.

Fewdfreak 08-15-2002 12:58 AM

Wow amycat, you are accident prone!! :D

I haven't had a lot of terrible stuff happen to me, just a few things.

When I was in sixth grade, my mom was driving to the YMCA for aerobics, I had my hand out the window as we drove, and I smacked my hand on this baracade type thing with the flashing light on it. I didn't feel it at first, but ten minutes later, I was bawling. I'm pretty sure I broke my hand because now I have a huge lump of misplaced bone where my thumb and wrist connect that isn't there on my other hand...

In tenth grade chemistry, we were making moulding glass tubes while the teacher demonstrated an experiement with carbon and sulfur. I remember feeling dizzy and then the teacher waking me up as I was slumped over the lab table. I went to the nurses office, but they didn't send me home, so I had to walk around school the rest of the day holding onto the wall so that I wouldn't fall down. :( That happened more than once in chemistry, and we never found out of if I was sensitive to the gas from the bunson burners, or from the sulfur.

Last year when I ran track, there were hurdles set out oun the track. They are higher for the guys than they are for the girls. I attempted a guys hurdle. I went over the first one fine, but the second one I went over a little too far and ended up falling on my face. I had scrapes on my hands and knees and this black rubber all over myself. :(

nucutiepie 08-15-2002 10:56 AM

oh, i am the klutz queen

5th grade: helping my little cousin pedal around on his tricycle, he was too little to pedal himself so i was standing on the back pushing him around... we hit a bump and i flew over the handlebars, skinning my knee like it has never been skinned before or since... luckily my uncle who is a doctor was there to scrape the gravel out... big scar on that knee

6th grade: I caught a swinging door the wrong way and bruised hte bones in my wrist

8th grade: trying to peel an apple, i took the tip off my little finger with a vegetable peeler... its still a little misshapen

8th grade part II: my entire grade went to a play, when it was over we were all walking down a spiral staircase to leave. I was on the inside of the staircase, in my first pair of high heels and a cute little miniskirt... well, my heel catches on a stair, and i slid the rest of the way down the stairs and tore ligaments in my ankle... it was bad

9th grade: got hit in the head by a field hockey ball during a game and blacked out for a while

12th grade: on a drunken night, slammed my hand into a butcher block kitchen table and broke my middle finger (this finger has been broken twice before, mind you)

college: walking around my room before a frat party, talking on the phone and drinking a diet coke... i trip over a pillow on the floor, fall flat on my face, spray diet coke all over the room, and get the WORST bruise you have ever seen on my foot... almost a year later i still have a mark

this past summer: crossing the street, slip and fall down, land so that i dislocate my thumb leading to two weeks in a cast

AOX81 08-15-2002 11:19 AM

Let's see...what do you think?

When I was 3 I was walking on top of a table and fell and put my teeth through my lower lip. (~1/2 inch scar)

When I was 4 I put my arm through a window on my great-grandma's storm door. (~2 inch scar)

When I was about 10 my dog decided he was going to wrap his leash around me and caused me to trip...I landed on a wagon and I now have a 2 inch scar on my led from that.

When I was about 12 I was running through a swamp at my grandparents house (with no shoes on) and a branch of a tree impaled my foot. I have a lovely scar from that.

When I was in Cancun for Spring Break I thought it would be cool to ride a mechanical bull. Well I stayed on the longest but I also have four scars on my legs to prove it.

In 2000 I fell off of a bus and broke my hand/wrist.

Last year I fell going UP the stairs in my house and almost broke the same hand.

I was at my bestfriends house last winter and I was drinking...I decided I was going to be an Olympic gymnast. For being drunk I actually did a good job on my backhandspring but one of my friends failed to move a chair and I ended up hitting it...it hurt the next morning :(

A couple of weeks ago I dropped 4 plastic chairs on me and put a huge gash on the side of my leg.

A couple of weeks ago I ran into a disassembled desk at work and got an huge bruise on my thigh.

Last week it hit my foot on the corner of something and it punctured a hole in my foot that wouldn't stop bleeding for 12 hours. I had 4 band-aids on top of each other!

Gee...I wonder what will happen this weekend.

Let's just say that my mom calls me GRACE!

AOX81 08-15-2002 11:22 AM

Oh yeah, and I forgot the time that I was making blueberry muffins at 3:00 in the morning for all of my friends. It kind of hurts when you reach in the oven with no mitt

PsychTau 08-24-2002 12:13 AM

OH NO!!!

I don't think I have any great stories to tell, but I fear that I've jinxed myself by reading all of these!!!!

justamom 08-24-2002 08:04 AM

revisiting the thread

After reading all of these once more, it's a wonder any of us are still ALIVE!
