The TFM TSM Culture versus Greek Life Reality

So in my thread about TSM clothing it was mentioned that what's portrayed on their site is not the reality of Greek life.

What I'm wondering is if it's started or will have an effect on high school students looking to be Greek.

If all I knew about Greek life was what I'd seen on that site and I went to my college I'd be confused and possibly disappointed because it doesn't match what was "sold" to me on the site.

DrPhil 05-29-2014 11:02 AM

Can someone explain what TFM and TSM are? Those haven't reached my world.

Consider yourself lucky. It's total Frat move or total srat move. It's all about 'Merica, Republican, rich, white, highly attractive women, gossip, pictures etc... With a HUGE emphasis on party hard, excess, extremes etc...

It's kind of like The Chive or The Berry but for Greek life.

Yay for Cat Saturday!

If people think that TFM and TSM are what Greek life really is all about, then chances are they already held those assumptions prior to visiting the site(s).

I would hope that most intelligent incoming college students would be able to recognize these sites as being used purely for entertainment. They're even advertised as humor sites. Collegehumor.com has been around forever, seemingly giving a bad name to every college and university around the country. However, I highly doubt that site has greatly influenced students' decisions to attend college, not attend college, party harder, and/or party less.

If anyone is completely buying into what's being portrayed on a humor website, then they need to step away from these sites and do some actual research. Either that, or they'll get to college and find out that not everything they see on the interwebz is for realz.

ETA: Where the heck did that smiley face at the top of my post come from?

Aaaaaand it's next to a book named 'Farts'. Appropriate.

Lol, like anyone who believes that garbage ever goes in a bookstore.

It's the female counterpart to "frat". Doesn't roll off the tongue but still fairly widespread, at least around the schools I'm at.

pinksequins 06-21-2014 07:44 PM

Clemsongirl, do you mean schools in Rhode Island or do you mean Clemson, Furmann et al?

I've heard it in both areas, more so in and around Clemson since I spend most of my time there. Don't know how pervasive it is in other areas. I've heard it used more as an adjective than as a noun; that is, girls might say something is "so srat" but would probably not describe themselves as being in a "srat".

I think I'm feeling faint and need to move to the veranda .....

You're welcome to the rocker next to me and some sweet tea

Some young woman (NOT at the chapter I advised) said "sratty" in front of me during recruitment this year. I just couldn't believe it.

Darling, you go to Wash U. You don't have a snowball's chance of being "sratty."

Good Lord.

Same here. This thread is perplexing.

"'Sratty' is not going to happen. STOP trying to make 'sratty' happen!"

pinksequins 06-22-2014 06:31 PM

The veranda is filling up fast. Going to bring out more chairs.

ASTalumna06 06-22-2014 07:20 PM

One of our sisters (at a school I won't mention, but it's in the northeast) tried creating a clothing site which had the word "srat" in it. It was painful to see people like it on Facebook, especially because most alumnae didn't understand what srat was referring to, and they thought she just made up a creative name. When they found out about srat and how it's been used, many weren't thrilled.

Oh, and I just came across this website. There are no words.

The word "twiddle" is gross.

Seconded

SWTXBelle 06-22-2014 11:01 PM

It has been moved and seconded. All those in favor?

- Aye

hithere112 06-22-2014 11:48 PM

I just mentioned TFM this is the thread I started. Personally, I think the website can be funny at times. It's a parody. It also tracks news that is interesting to undergrads (as well as scandals)...here's where the site can damaging: people start to believe that they should take on the traits that are praised on the website. Especially high schoolers that otherwise have No information about Greek Life.

FSUZeta 06-24-2014 05:25 PM

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner!

ColdInCanada11 06-24-2014 09:31 PM

It's even more bizarre to hear "sratty" here. You are in the middle of Canada, stop trying to make "srat" happen. *rolls eyes*

pinksequins 06-25-2014 01:36 AM

Join us on the veranda, Cold! We'll offer something from Tim Horton's in addition to sweet tea.

ZTA1550 06-25-2014 01:31 PM

Just read a bit of http://sratfession.com. Save me a rocking chair on the veranda. And better have some smelling salts to go with that sweet tea!

ColdInCanada11 06-25-2014 10:19 PM

*sips Tim Horton's hot chocolate and slowly rocks back and forth thinking of the good ole' days (2009...)*

tinydancer 06-27-2014 01:41 AM

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. And what's the deal about painting a cooler? Is this an euphemism for something dirty or actually painting? I'm such a square.

33girl 06-27-2014 02:02 AM

It's actually painting - girls make them for guys. I don't get it. Every second and $ you waste on painting is time and money you could have spent drinking beer.

WTH is a twiddle? Because I think of "twiddle your thumbs" and that's clearly not the context here.

WhiteRose1912 06-27-2014 03:12 AM

I assume two littles with the same big--a portmanteau of "twin" and "little".
