Rush at American
 

Formal Rush starts tomorrow here at American University! Everyone's getting pretty pumped up... supposedly there are a good number of girls coming through, and we're all excited. Round one is tomorrow, with the Philanthropy party, and Round Two is Saturday, which is the second open party, then it continues next Friday with Theme and Saturday with pref, and Sunday is Calling Out. I'll be sure to keep y'all posted on who wore what, said what, how skits went, and all the rest of it... I love rush from this side!! Last year I was Panhel Exec Board, so I didn't get to go through it with my sisters, so I'm really psyched. Wish us luck, and I'll post more tomorrow!

WHEW!!!

It's over! We made it through the first round!

Tonight was Philanthropy. It was the first year we've done a philanthropy party, so we were a little worried it wouldn't go well, but it ROCKED. We wore jeans, sneakers, and white shirts that said "There's No Excuse for Domestic Abuse" in purple writing. Purple balloons, a philanthropy table, and served hot chocolate (which the girls LOVED- different from the other juices and sodas, plus it was cold out :) ). For the craft we made bags with small toiletries for women in shelters- toothpaste, deodarant, tampons, shaving cream, etc. and tied them with purple ribbons to be donated to the House of Ruth.

Some high quality girls out there- met some that I absolutely ADORED, and of course some I wasn't too crazy about- but that's rush, it's what happens :). Word is that we were top on the girls' lists b/c our craft was a happy medium- some chapters had the girls write letters to NY firefighters or sick children, which they felt was a little too personal for a first party. But I think everyone overall did really well- we were all so pumped that it was finally here!

Funny note...after the parties, I walked out and some members from XYZ were standing in the hallways talking about how they hated rush. One girl ACTUALLY SAID "Ugh, I had this one girl who sucked. I told her I had a sexually transmitted disease and that she needed one to get into our sorority."

OH MY GOD.... who let this girl out of her cage??

Really sounds wonderful! I agree about the letters, it's uncomfortable for some people to put pen to paper on short notice.

I think your philanthropy idea was very good, especially when you're just getting to know the rushees. Way to stand out. :)

I can't help but thinking...WTF! Whoever that hallway person is, they should be very ashamed of themselves. Who would speak about someone that way period, much less in a perfectly public place. I sincerely hope that she was kidding (some joke :rolleyes: ) and didn't ruin some woman's rush experience.
Ugh...that kind of thing frustrates me to hear about. :mad:

Alright, y'all, second day....

WE KICKED BOOTY!!!!

It was our "Get Wild with AXO" theme- i've mentioned it before on this board. Animal print letters, khakis, and black boots, we serve animal crackers, gummy bears, and handmade zebra mint chocolate thingies. Animal print balloons, the works. We do a skit as a whole chapter, a littel song and dance,a dn then about 10 of us do this kickass dance to Tone Loc's Wild Thang... we change the words, so it goes

IT'S SO SUPERFUN... befoire the dance there's this musical interlude, we all "jam out" and just let loose... we had one girl do "the worm", another was breakdancing, we were doing the running man, the Hammer dance, the lawnmower, shopping cart, everything. We had a blast- and the girls loved that we were so open and funny and just all about having a good time :)
They said they loved our energy, too- one girl said we had better energy in our last (10th) party than one chapter had in the first!!!

So many alumnae showed up- including Cosette, out 80 year old advisor whow as an AXO back in the 50s. She's such a hot piece, she shows up in leopard print everything, knee high boots, the works. They are so dedicated- one girl's boyfriend broke up with her yesterday on their FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY and she STILL came to help us serve punch and everything before she flew home to Turkey to be with her mom. We are so lucky to have great alums :)

Anyways, I'm off to shower and let loose for the night- the next round, Theme, is on Friday, so there won't be much word till then!

sounds like yall are having soooo much fun. Do yall have a video of the Wild Thing dances?-sounds very cute and I bet other chapters would love to give it a try. You girls rock!!!

Okayt, we got some comments back from the Rush Counselors about what the girls thought about the party:

Only 3 negatives (from 10 groups!)
-too peppy (ok, next time I'll act like I don't care :rolleyes:)
-too many sisters in the sorority (we're at total, and have over 70 women)
-they felt a little bombarded by sisters (this we need to work on, we have some very overzealous sophomores for whom this is their 1st rush, and they don't quite understand that 4 sisters on 1 girl is bad news bears).

But the positives were that:

-[B]we were hard to compete with![B/]
- our dance was hot
-we looked like the MTV VMA Awards
-genuine
-really liked each other
-had fun with it
and my favorite rushee's quote....
- "They were friggin' awesome!!!

So yay! Today the girls pick who they want to come back to for Theme. At my boyfriend's party last night all the fraternity guys kept coming up to me and my sisters telling us how much the girls loved us and trying to weasel information out of us :) Not so much, boys...
