Upcoming Fox 2000 Movie: "Drumline"
The unexposed world of African-American "Show Bands", characterized by funky drum beats and high-stepping dance moves, will be prominently featured in Twentieth Century Fox's forthcoming fish-out-of-water coming-of-age comedy Drumline.
Set in Atlanta, Georgia, the hub of the black college experience, the story focuses on the trials and tribulations of Harlem native Devon Miles, a talented and confident snare drummer, who comes to Atlanta A&T as the key recruit on a full scholarship to save the school's struggling marching band. Upon his arrival, Devon immediately struggles to fit in uncomfortable with his freshman "Crab status." Unversed in the vernacular of the south, and unnerved by snare section leader Sean and Band Director Dr. Lee, the later finds himself and the future of his band program in jeopardy when Sean exposes Devon's inability to read music. Devon has to learn the value of teamwork and discipline to overcome these deficits and make it to the event that will change his life—the Big South Classic. Set in the rousing, spectacular world of college marching bands, the fish-out-of-water comedy depicts the ordeals of a gifted hip-hop drummer from Harlem who wins a music scholarship to a fictional Southern university and hopes to land a spot as a drummer on its marching band's drumline. Although he initially flounders in his new culture and environment, the tenacious, talented freshman conquers his shortcomings to lead the school's band in the heralded Big South Classic, one of the nation's most popular musical contests spotlighting some of the country's best college bands. My UG chapter!
I had to share. I'm too excited!
From an email I received... Tell sorors to look for that sign when they see the previews of "Drumline" while going to see "Brown Sugar." We are only on there a split second when they show a crowd scene. NOTE: A sign was made that read "AKA LOVES GSU Tiger Marching Band" AKA was in big letters. Loves was a heart, with Alphta Theta symbol in the middle and GSU Tiger Marching Band written at bottom. Sign in Green trimmed in pink and GSU....in Black Gold and Red. It is awesome! We'll take it to homecoming. IN CASE YOU HADN'T HEARD: GSU Tiger Marching Band is in "Drumline" that comes out in Jan. ********************* Now you know I have to support! :D |

Drumline!
Hello Everyone!
I am so delighted to see so many people excited as I am about a movie that showcases DISCIPLINED, EDUCATED, YOUNG BLACK PEOPLE...ok I ain't gonna start preaching. I absolutely love GSU marching Tigers. I am a NYC native and my mom would take my sister and I to the "Soul Bowl" every year at Yankee Stadium. My sister would cheer for Morgan State and I for GRAMBLING!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't ask me why I wound up at another HBCU, instead of Grambling!!!  My sister wound up at Howard! Go figure!:D :D |
But everyone know the true Institution Of Sound JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY We kicks butt up and down the East coast baby what!
|
Just wanna see that band and sign!
December 13th.
The trailers began this weekend on BET duing our Homecoming Game. :D |

Yes, I plan on seeing this movie but, I'm alittle disappointed that my alma mater Florida A & M University band isn't in the movie.

I was disappointed too that the best band in the land, the incomparable FAMU Marching 100 was not included in this film. But, from what I've heard, the 100 was invited to participate but they declined. Why? I have no idea. |

As for the movie, I will be there Friday night! |
It also seems as if this film takes its base from the Battle of the Bands that takes place every year at Bayou Classic time between Southern and Grambling. Being a graduate of Southern (go Jags!) I noticed the Blue and Gold and Black and Gold uniforms in the previews. I have also heard from some of my classmates and friends in the band that the Human Juke Box (Southern) was asked to be in the movie. However, Doc Greggs declined because 1) he didn't want them depicting a fictitious school and 2) he was told that in the movie, the other band would win the competition. Now, its nothing wrong with having pride in the band, but I personally think Doc took it a little too far! Anyway, I've already got my $7.25 to see the movie!
By the way, I am a new soror to the board and will post my info in the appropriate thread!:) |
Rattlers..strike,strike,& strike again!!!
Thanks for the info. ClassyLady and Librasoul22!! And yes, FAMU has the best band in the land...no doubt!
I'm so glad, I'm from FAMU...sing glory halelujah...whoa!.. I'm so glad!:D |

I also heard that the reason the 100 declined to be in the movie was because they would have to lose to the fictitious band in the film. You know we weren't having that! ;) I can't wait to see the move! |
Oh my gawd!
Excuses...Excuses....
What is it that they say about excuses? They are what? ;) :p |
Oh no she didn't....
I am going to see it to support the movie. However (I 'm not trying to hate, but Southern has the Best Band) and I can truly believe that Doc said "no". My boyfriend marched with Southern for four years and Doc was kinda fickle, I love GSU too but I really love SSSSSSSSSS UUUUUUUU, and (yes, I am going there) if you were at this years Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands, Southerns Band blew away Gramblings. We not even gonna talk about the game.......... Alpha Theta represented though, they beat my undergrad chapter by one point!!
It's all good, as long as the end result was S-K double E, W- double-E Skee Weee My Sorors, SKee Weeeeee! |
OH YES I DID....
Like other SU-nites, including myself say...YA'LL GOT VOLUME....THAT'S IT!
That's NOT the human jukebox, more like the human puke box. When you dance...CONTINUE TO PLAY. UHHHH what? no hand/eye coordination. Yeah, I heard Beta Psi won. (clapping) (TCALWB ;) ) When was the last time Beta Psi won? I also heard Eta Kappa represented, too. Too bad they aren't SWAC. Miss GSU (Alpha Theta made) represented better than Miss SU. ;) LMAO! (I see you all purchased another crown for her). Who are her people? She must be somebody's daughter... :p |
Well, I'm sorry to disappoint all of you but the baddest band in the land is that of my alma mater the home of the BOX "The Marching Storm". And those from Southern as well as Grambling know who I'm talking about PVU the real band from the South.
Though I am truely greatful to see our college experiences displayed on the big screen in a positive light. All my love to all of the HBCU's keep your heads held high. And please, please graduate and use your degree to uplift our communities. And it's alright to give back if you can, though times may have been hard those institution of higher learning were built by our founding fathers and mothers. For future generations to succeed in whatever their hearts desired. We can't afford another Morris Brown or Gramblings State being forced to make that heartaching decision in closing their doors or losing their accreditation. Keep the dream alive, and keep our HBCU's open and accredited. Much HBCU Luv |

Chile please, can you all win A game? UH-OH, You need a coach first. :D :p Much love for PVU, my father got his Master's from there AFTER he finished at GSU. oh yeah, welcome to GC! There's nothing like that SWAC LUB! :D |
PVU
PVU? I guess the "football" players must be in the band.
The Human pukebox....I ain't go lie SU 's band is not what it was, its time for Doc to retire. Miss Southern, I have a theory behind that and who continues year after year to represent the school but I 'm leave that alone. Beta Psi, I am just glad we got "second" this year at the Battle, always classy. :) You know I was telling sombody the other day, going to an HBCU is and was an experience;) |
Is anyone going to see it tonight?
I probably won't go until Sunday or later in the week... |
If time permits, I'll see it this weekend
if not, I'll see it next weekend for sure.
When I saw the special on BET this week, the movie puts me in the mind of School Daze. Just this morning, I heard students reciting lines from SD. I was like  if they only knew.... I hope this does well and puts a spark in student's minds to go to college. You can get an education AND have fun. :D |

Good flick!!
I just got home from the movie, and I loved it!!! It's a happy movie, a feel good movie, I think. I like to see movies with positive black folk. Good story line, good dialogue, good entertainment. I give it two pinkies up. :)
I'll wait to discuss my favorite parts, give people a chance to see the movie. :) |
I saw it also and I reallllly liked it. It kind of reminded me of Bring it On except with the band instead of cheerleaders. I hope the commercials don't discourage people from seeing it because it looks like it's a "black" movie or a "band" movie since it's not really either. I think anybody who has ever been in a group or team could relate to the themes in this movie. Overall a very light-hearted, fun movie:)
|
I went to see it last night but it was sold out! I guess I should have known better to try to catch the 8 pm show. All my students were there, I was like I'll come back at 10pm so the teenie bopper crowd will be gone. Alas, it was sold out as well. I will try tommorow.
|
:D I saw the movie today! It was sooo great. Very interesting plot and I loved the focus on HBCU bands. The Greek stuff was cool too. Awesome movie! Check it out!;)
|
I saw it last night and it was really good! The acting was way better than I thought it would be. It's a movie that everyone can enjoy. They were at a black school but there was no emphasis on race and I liked that aspect of it.
|
I liked it too. I thought Orlando Jones did well. I'm so used to seeing him doing comedy. J Anthony Brown was funny.
It's a movie for everyone. Could there be a DL2? It kind of ended abruptly. That's the only problem I had with the film. :D |
For All Ages
I went with my son, husband and sister to see this movie. My son
really enjoyed it. I was skepital because of the PG-13 rating, but I figured the college theme would be a plus. I thought the storyline was good. The actors were good. It was refreshing to see Orlando Jones, The 7-UP guy, playing such a different part. I believe this movie came in #3 in the weekend box office |
Drumline...
I think it was a good movie. . .I just wish it had been a little more realistic. Not saying that it could never happen but a freshman getting with an upperclassmen...on my campus that's damn near considered taboo. Also, they should have shown some football footage...every scence was automatically 3rd quarter. Overall, the movie was off the chain. The bands were tight...and since when did Morris Brown have the best band in the south??!! I plan to go see it again.
|
Hello everyone. I am new to GC. Excuse me if I'm being rude. I'm not really up to par on the whole "Internet Etiquette" thing. I just wanted to say I saw "Drumline" and thought it was a really good movie too. Very entertaining. Also, in reference to Southern University's band (I'm not an SU student but can still see they are the best;) ), does anyone know the name of the guy who was the Drum Major in '97 and '98? To me, he was the best Drum Major the school has had that I've seen.
|
I enjoyed Drumline! I think anyone could enjoy it. It was good to see TBS and KKPsi represented but, I was thrown off by the fake sorority and school (ATL A&T). Otherwise, I think it was pretty realistic....made me wanna pull out the old flute and pop some 90s around the parking lot  ! But , I got over that since I haven't marched in about 8 years:rolleyes: !
