A rather sadly odd hazing at Univ. of Conn.

My jaw dropped when I first heard of this. This is so far out of dumb, dumber and dumbest. Down right stupid and so unnecessary. Why did a Fraternity get itself involved in a Sorority hazing? http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/l...249127751.html

sigmagirl2000 03-10-2014 06:07 AM

This one has a bit more information: Hartford Courant Article.

Bizarre either way.

formerccd 03-10-2014 10:08 AM

The really strange thing is she is a current sister. This indecent took place Thursday, she woke up Friday in the hospital and by Friday night she was giving interviews on the news. I am not saying it did not happen, or does not constitute hazing, but the whole situation is very strange.

It's strange that someone was hazed, ended up in the hospital, and reported the incident immediately?

formerccd 03-10-2014 10:51 AM

No, just that she was getting interviewed on the news about three hours after getting released. I would absolutely expect that she reported it immediately, to both the University and to the police. The news stations she also contacted at the same time. I would expect to be shaken up, and exhausted from being in the hospital, not necessarily being interviewed by four news stations the same day I was released. I applaud her for speaking out about the incident, the timing it just all really fast.

SoCalGirl 03-10-2014 11:05 AM

This part of the second article was interesting to me.

Quote:

Holt said since joining the sorority last fall, she has not experienced any hazing involving drinking but said after speaking with police, she might have been involved in another hazing incident.

DeltaBetaBaby 03-10-2014 12:18 PM

Nice victim blaming, guys!

DrPhil 03-10-2014 12:26 PM

Minus the alcohol**, there are GLOs in which some of these types of things are part of tradition. That includes fraternities and sororities handling each other's "pledges."

It can still be considered hazing in certain environments and especially since this article deals with NPC and IFC GLOs that tend not to have this practice. But some of you need to realize that there is a world outside of what you are accustomed to.

**Some NPC and IFC chapters have engaged in "physical hazing" but NPC and IFC are more likely to engage in "alcohol hazing."

DubaiSis 03-10-2014 01:33 PM

Probably the hospital not she made the initial call to the police. And either the police or the hospital could have called the media.
And I wouldn't consider them shaming the victim. Here's the scenario I picture:
Cop: have you ever been hazed?
Vic:no
Cop: have you ever been made to drink when you didn't want to?
Vic: well,umm, yes.
Cop:have you ever been made to do anything embarrassing or humiliating?
Vic:well, there was that one time...
Cop: you were hazed.

DrPhil: Would you please clarify/amplify what you mean by "tradition" and "world outside of what you are accustomed to"?

I do not know anything about the KKG Chapter but the SAE house is far from being one of our oldest Chapters.

And no matter how one looks at it, the actions by the Brothers of the house, The Chapter, The Brotherhood violated everything and anything one can think of in terms of RM, ethics, morals, code of conduct, policies and more than likely a few laws ginve the information from current news reporting. Which perhaps why is is outside of the what we are accustomed to. And expect from our members.

Or is your comment more innocent than I took at first glance? Are you talking about "Big Brother/Little Sister" type events?

AOII Angel 03-10-2014 01:46 PM

That goodness they ran into an RA when they tried to dump her at the dorm who had enough sense to make them take her to the ER. This could have been a tragedy rather than just an embarrassment and possible charter review for these chapters. If that woman had been left alone in her room with alcohol poisoning, she clearly could have died.

This story maybe one of those that evolves under investigation. It does seem that she is a 21 year old Active member.

DrPhil 03-10-2014 02:55 PM

If she was an active when this occurred, it can still be classified as hazing but the implications are different.

formerccd 03-10-2014 03:42 PM

That is what I feel. There seems to be more to this story than is being initially reported. I am from CT and it has literally been on every news station every night since Friday with different snippits and slightly different information. I am interested if these two chapters have gotten in trouble together before, it seemed to have been insinuated by one of the stations. It is surely just a strange (and clearly unfortunate) story. And yes, thank goodness for good RA's.

Reading her complete post, and knowing what GLO she belongs to, I think she is saying that while this type of hazing may be surprising or seem unusual in an NPC or NIC/IFC context, it might not be as surprising or unusual in another context, such as NPHC fraternities and sororities.

33girl 03-10-2014 04:02 PM

This sounds like underground little sister pledging and zero to do with the sorority, other than that they probably hang out with the SAEs together.

On another note, I had to AAAAGGGH when I saw that "the station reached out to the sorority. " This is the latest bit of corporatespeak to annoy the piss out of me.

AGDee 03-10-2014 04:10 PM

When our organizations first started cracking down on hazing in the late 80s/early 90s, chapters thought they'd get around it by having opposite gender orgs haze their pledges instead. We called it cross-hazing. They would have "pledge exchanges" where they swapped pledges for a night. It didn't last long.

Right.

When people research pledging and hazing across GLOs, hazing investigations and responses to hazing allegations become less about shock and awe that humans would engage in certain behaviors.

sigmagirl2000 03-10-2014 05:52 PM

I don't know.... at least about the sizzling like bacon on the floor part.

SoCalGirl 03-10-2014 09:46 PM

Sizzling Bacon

I was going to link to a YT video of the Dazed and Confused scene but all the other video links that came up on the sidebar made feel like I need to shower.

And I agree, it sounds like Fraternity Little Sister hazing more that Sorority Sister hazing.

You and me both. "Reach out" is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.

Sounds like SAE has also suspended their chapter.

I've heard of and personally witnessed another fraternity hazing sorority new members. This was about 10 years ago, so I have no idea if it's still going on, but back then, it definitely was.

I simply can't understand why this still goes on. It's a huge recipe for disaster... I'm thinking potential for physical/sexual abuse charges. I don't know if it's happened, but both chapters open themselves up to be put in really unfortunate situations.

ETA: Plus, keeping hazing hush hush is hard enough within one chapter. Why add another and double your chances of getting caught?

And I'm not condoning hazing... it just seems that a chapter that's doing something illegal and wanting to keep it secret would try a little harder to do so.

DubaiSis 03-11-2014 01:26 PM

But 18-22 year olds are 10 feet tall and bullet proof .

Although I do not have first hand knowledge, I have heard of this kind of hazing which was as far as I can tell for the amusement of the frat boys. The lead in started with an innocent if goofy game, but then the girls who lost had to drink. Stuff that someone might not do to impress another girl would thus seem reasonable. The requested tasks then escalated once the girls started drinking. The boys would then in turn help with smearing sororities (labeling the "WRC" groups) where girls refused to participate.

Methinks that risk management education may be a highlighted point in the extension presentations ....

sigmagirl2000 03-11-2014 05:03 PM

isn't UConn in the process of expansion and presentations currently?

Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Delta Delta Delta were all invited to present. I am curious as to how this will affect their presentations/desire to colonize. I think the issue they would be most concerned about is whether there is an overall culture of hazing at the school or if it is limited to a few chapters.

Aphigal 03-12-2014 09:06 AM

Uconn has a really great system, a great Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affiars and I am confident the University is working with the national orgs to understand what happened, why it happened, and what the appropriate sanctions will be (if any)

There are lots of rumors right now but everyone needs to wait and see what the official investigation has to say.

AOII Angel 03-12-2014 10:40 AM

I doubt it will make much if a difference. UConn is a good school, and I think most people have that "We know how to prevent this nonsense" bravado. That mentality does not go away with age.

SOM 04-09-2014 12:10 AM

UConn Sorority, Frat Members Won't Be Charged In Alleged Hazing Incident-MANSFIELD — State troopers and state police detectives who investigated allegations of hazing against a University of Connecticut sorority and fraternity found no reason to file criminal charges.
Prosecutors in Superior Court in Rockville agreed with those findings and declined to bring any charges against members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

I also posted this in the colonies/expansions thread, but it looks like KKG is planning to appeal:

http://www.newsday.com/news/region-s...sion-1.7982108

Nanners52674 05-14-2014 12:31 AM

I don't think it warranted removal. The member alleging hazing was initiated and 21. If the hazing was peer pressure and persuasion to drink I'm not sure I think that's hazing.

If a girl was at a party and her friends put pressure to drink, that girl wouldn't turn around and cry hazing. I feel as thought this got labeled hazing because the girls giving pressure were members of the same group.

Also it bothers me she went to the news before KKG, UConn etc...
