I have to admit, when my team is not playing in the Bowl, the next best thing is to watch the commercials.

bevinpiphi 02-01-2014 10:52 PM

Sorry to anyone cheering for the two teams - I just don't care too much this year. I'm recording the game, so I can fast forward to the commercials. We were hit with another snowstorm and I'm a bit happy that I had a built-in excuse to not drive the 3 hours down to St. Louis for a friend's Super Bowl party. (also, they talk during the commercials, but I don't think I could have given that as a reason without facing some mocking)

I'm looking forward to the Winter Soldier preview that's been announced. I haven't watched any of the Super Bowl ads that are on youtube already, because I do want to be a bit surprised.

I was prepared to not give two shits about the Superbowl this year, then the Seahawks somehow made it. That being said, I am looking forward to the commercials. Wonder what Go Daddy.com is going to do since they said they are moving away from their traditional style of commercial.

Volkswagen - German engineers getting their wings - funny and smart!

I just want to find out what happens to the yellow M&M..

Me too!

I have been flipping back and forth between Fox and the Mythbuster marathon and for once being glad that the commercials run on all channels simultaneously. In the early running, the Peanuts/Met Life add is super cute. Almost Kleenex ad touching. And I'm not much of a flag waver, so that's saying something.

bevinpiphi 02-02-2014 07:49 PM

I'm also looking forward to finding out why Don Cheadle has a llama.

Is it bad that I immediately thought of GC when I saw it?

MysticCat 02-02-2014 10:19 PM

I've liked the Tim Tebow commercials and the Radio Shack Going-Back-to-the-80s. Otherwise, this year's crop has seemed meh to me.

Maman 02-02-2014 10:44 PM

The Coke commercial was number #1. The best commercial since Mean Joe Green, also Coke.

Dnpgopenguins 02-02-2014 11:19 PM

was excited to see GoldieBlox commercial, but I liked the slightly longer version on YouTube.

ASTalumna06 02-02-2014 11:30 PM

Disappointed by the M&Ms. I expected it to keep going.

Same thing with the Bud Light commercials. Funny, but I wanted that guy to get dragged all over town and have more commercials showing what happened to him. Or do the same thing to multiple people. So disappointing.

I was also looking forward to seeing the GoldieBlox commercial, but I don't feel like it really showed what they are and what the company is trying to do.

Very bad this year.

Sciencewoman 02-03-2014 12:04 AM

Clydesdales and puppy!

What a boring game.

yeah, I agree. The one on YouTube is better cause you learn a little but more about the product. It was cute, but if you did not know what GoldieBlox is you probably not really going to figure it out by the commercial. I have seen better commercials from the company. Maybe people will Google the company to get a better idea of what they are. Hopefully!

aephi alum 02-03-2014 01:24 AM

Loved the Clydesdales ad with the puppy.

This. Even if a commercial is entertaining, if you don't know anything about the product afterwards, or worse, can't remember what the product was, it's a fail.

Toyota using Terry Crews + The Muppets: how can you not love that?

Maman 02-03-2014 09:52 AM

Re: Coke. I loved the football one, not the diversity one with the bad translations.

"Above the fruited plain", translated as "on top of the fruits."

Sciencewoman 02-03-2014 10:36 AM

^^^ I liked both of those, too! Muppets and cute kids are always winners. The Doritos time machine ad was cute, too.

Regarding GoldieBlox...this is a great idea. I saw the founder being interviewed and this idea is a real winner. In my opinion, Lego has really missed the boat by targeting their products to boys. My daughter loved Legos and subscribed to the magazine. You could send in your creation pictures; the boy to girl submissions ratio was always about 20:1.

The crazy thing is that Lego has produced the Belville series for girls, but has never made them widely available. We came across them at the DisneyWorld Lego store when our daughter was about 4, and loaded up on all the sets over the years. We had to either buy them there or on-line at the Lego store, and they often sold out quickly. She called them "Princess Legos" and spent untold hours playing with them. They were her #1 toy. They were all based on classic tales. http://cdn.thebrickblogger.com/wp-co...ted-Palace.jpg

When I saw the GoldieBlox interview, my husband and I talked about it once again, and agreed that Lego had missed a golden opportunity with their limited marketing to boys. Good for GoldieBlox.

I also loved Legos growing up. My mom has way too many pictures of me playing with them while wearing the Legos bucket on my head. :p

I guess I never really thought of it before, but you're right; Legos has never really made an effort to appeal to girls. It really is unfortunate.

ComradesTrue 02-03-2014 12:19 PM

I have a 7 year old son and a 5 year old daughter. In the past 2 years I have seen a significant increase in the legos for little girls, but the variety and choices still pales in comparison to that of the boys. Even the 5 year old notices: "where are the rest of the GIRLS legos??? There's SO MANY legos for boys..." However, we have quite a few age appropriate sets for her, and she loves them.

It seems the "girl versions" hit the aisles in the past 2-3 years, and then the legos are growing up with the girls. In other words, as she has aged, the newest releases seem age appropriate for her. However, there are not yet the huge, complex sets (aged 8-12) for her that would be an equal comparison to what we are buying for our son. My hope is that the new releases each year will continue to target these girls as they grow up. We are lucky that she seems to be in the right age range.. if she were a few years older there would be many fewer choices. She is currently doing the "5-12" sets, but really, in complexity, those are more 5-8. Older girls would be bored.

She also has 2 GoldieBlox sets and has to fight off big brother from playing with them. I love the idea behind GoldieBlox and was thrilled that they were selected from over 15,000 submission to get the SuperBowl commercial by intuit.

YouTube full length SuperBowl commercial.

Our daughter is 19, and I have nieces who are 4, 7, 9, and 13. When my daughter was young, Lego came out with new Belville sets every year. They were big, elaborate sets, with some accessory smaller sets. I tried to get them for my nieces for birthday and Christmas gifts, but that only worked for a couple years because Lego scaled the line waayyyy back. So, I think they had a "dearth" period, and if they've ramped it back up the past 2-3 years, I'm glad to hear it, because I felt the same way you do about the timing when we got them for my daughter. Maybe GoldieBlox will spur them to action.

Love that letter, Kevin! :)

Again, we agree! If those watching the commercial don't know the product within the first 15 seconds, the company paid for dead air, IMHO.

Enough of my friends agree with my philosophy that, when a commercial came on with dubious parentage yesterday, they started to make buzzer noises, saying, "Bad commercial! Next!"

With that said, can you imagine the pressure of working for the ad campaign for Budweiser?

Liked what I saw of GoldieBlox, and Debbie Sterling, from googling.

Commercials that made me LOL (seen only on youtube, did not watch Super Bowl): Volkwagon Wings---Doritos Time Machine--Cheerios--Sarah McLachlan's cameo for Audi.

Commercials that made me cry: Microsoft Empowering.

Did contestants on a yet-to-be-aired episode of The Apprentice script/direct this one: RadioShack 80's

WestcoastWonder 02-03-2014 09:01 PM

The Dannon Oikos commericial with John Stamos was hilarious!

And is it me, or does John Stamos just get better with age?
