Questions. Help? FSU
Hey everyone I hope someone can answer this for me!
Ok so I am going to be at TCC as a freshman (Tallahassee community college) but I was also accepted to do part time at FSU or be a transient student. My question is. Since I will be taking classes at FSU, even if my main school is TCC (for now I will be switching to FSU) can I rush? My friend who is also goes to TCC was a transient student and was able to rush and join a sorority at FSU and apart of ZTA. So is that true as well? I looked it up and it said people attending or taking classes at FSU could rush. But does that mean part time or transient? What are my chances? I am very friendly and social. If I don’t like someone it’s only because they don’t talk at all nor try and I do. I was a past cheerleader, current pageant girl, have a good GPA 3.7 am very involved in my community and won many awards and met and know well known people. The only difference between me and another freshman is my high school years I was home schooled because I was into sports, traveled and was an actor/model. Does coming from a regular school make a difference? I can get recommendation letters since I know a good number of woman who went and graduated from FSU was apart of a chapter. Should I do that? Also how does informal rush work? I will be part time or transient spring of 2015. I am very excited, and if I can rush and join a house that would make me even more happy since I was sad I could not go right into a bigger school even if I got in (I had a health problem as was advised to start small since I am still recovering) and I am fine with it seems to be the better choice for me anyway. I just always wanted to join a sorority and I know you only can at a university and its better your freshman year. Thank you so much for all your help! |
You must be enrolled as a full time student to qualify for NPC recruitment. So whatever minimum class load is considered "full time" at FSU is the criteria.

What requirements are there for participating in Recruitment? To be eligible to register and participate in recruitment, you must first be fully admitted to Florida Sate University as a "First Time in College," "Lower Division Transfer," or "Upper Division Transfer" and registered for at least 12 hours of fall classes. Students who have not yet attended Orientation and registered for classes but who have been fully admitted are able to register. Transient students (those enrolled at other institutions but taking part-time courses at FSU) are eligible for Recruitment. This conflicts with what we know of NPC rules... I guess they run things a little differently at FSU. |
Just an FYI, you don't need to post the same thing in 3 separate places.
As for the answer to your question, it's best to ask someone at the school(s) you attend. We could Google answers like Thetalady did, but websites can be out of date or contain misleading information. Pick up the phone or visit the Greek life office in person when you are on campus. |
The current manual of information simply says you need to be matriculated by whatever standards matriculated is defined by the university. So if FSU decides transient students are eligible, then it is not against NPC policy.
Each national organization also defines however what membership means, some allow part time students, and some do not. |

To the bolded, is Tallahassee Community College part of Florida State University? Is it possible that one can enroll at FSU but take their classes at TCC? The reason I ask is that up until 1997, eight or so community colleges in Kentucky were linked to/part of the University of Kentucky. Those who attended one of these community colleges were considered enrolled at UK as either a freshman or sophomore. After your second year (or completion of your “sophomore year”) you either earned a two-year degree (if you were in a two-year program similar to a two-year Junior College program), you transferred to the UK (campus in Lexington), or you transferred to another college. While in the UK Community College system, the student received an official UK Student ID etc. and were allowed to attend student events on the UK campus (in Lexington) – like any other official UK student. In other words, they could put their Student ID in for student tickets to football and basketball games, concert events, lectures, films, arts etc. – just like the students attending UK in Lexington. For what it is worth, I never heard of any CC student rushing or joining a sorority or fraternity while attending the community college. But at that time, most of the community colleges were hours away from Lexington. One was located in Lexington but again, I’m not aware of any of the LCC students having rushed or joining a UK GLO while attending LCC. That doesn’t mean it wasn't possible, or that it didn’t happen, just that I don’t know that it did. |

I do know that TCC does have a lot of students attending both. Such as their main school Is TCC but they also attend FSU, it is the same way for FSU. Students main school is FSU but they attend at TCC too, we also have FA&M right next door and they also take classes at both, it’s quite confusing, since I never heard of it before.. I never heard of a CC student rushing, but since my friend has and is apart of a chapter and is her main school is TCC hearing why she could I guess thats how she was able too. I did read that if you are taking classes at FSU you could rush, I will just double check with the greek office. I am sure since she is only a sophomore now and she rushed her freshman year the rules have not changed. |

The only reason I asked is because of my friend. She is now a sophomore and rushed her freshman year and is apart of a house. That being said her main school was TCC and it still is but she is transferring fall 14. |

I had several friends/older sisters of friends who joined sororities at UK while LCC students in that time period. (I went to Lexington Catholic- we joked LCC stood for "Lexington Catholic Continued.") …resume FSU conversation... |

Thanks for the update. It never really came up when I was there, so I wasn't sure if any had done so. And now I know. :) |
For what it is worth, NIC fraternities have been allowed to charter on Junior Colleges for some time now. The NIC also allows city-wide chapters. I’m not sure if this was a change in policy to allow NPHC fraternities to join the NIC or if it was in place before they joined. Also, some NIC fraternities allow a specific campus chapter to take members from a local (specific) community college.
I am pretty sure I’ve read here on GC that men at TCC pledge FSU fraternities while they were still at TCC. |

III. THE PANHELLENIC COMPACT
1. A woman who is or who has ever been an initiated member of an existing NPC fraternity shall not be eligible for membership in another NPC fraternity. 2. To be eligible to participate in Panhellenic recruitment and pledge an NPC fraternity, a woman shall: a) Not be simultaneously enrolled in high school and attending college. b) Be regularly matriculated according to the definition of matriculation established by that institution. 3. An undergraduate woman shall not be asked to pledge an NPC fraternity during any school recess except during a primary membership recruitment period and the ensuing continuous open bidding (COB) process when held |
Before I said anything, I wanted to arrange my facts.
Paraphrasing from the 2013 FSU recruitment guide, “The Tomahawk”: Only fully matriculated FSU students who are enrolled as full time, are eligible to participate in fraternity or sorority recruitment, If chapters have active members who are not full time students in good standing at FSU, they are in violation of FSU policy. And this seems to contradict what Thetalady found on the FSU Greek Life page. Here is the link (see page 8) http://greeklife.fsu.edu/2013-Tomahawk Undergraduate students are considered full time if they take 12-15 hours per semester. Any students taking under 12 hours per semester (spring or fall semesters) is considered part time. http://registrar.fsu.edu/bulletin/un.../acad_regs.htm (see "Course Loads") Unless Panhellenic has made drastic changes to the Recruitment eligibility policies since Fall 2013 recruitment, a dual enrolled FSU/TCC student would not be eligible to join a fraternity or sorority at FSU until they qualified for full time status as a FSU student. I do know that some fraternities have bent the rule in the past, and it always came back to bite them. FSU does not lack for young women wanting to participate in Greek Life, so I cannot see them amending the enrollment policy to include dual enrolled students. In addition, for active membership,my sorority requires that a member be a full time student in good standing with the university where the chapter is located, so I am confused that the OP says her friend joined my chapter as a transient student. So OP, as everyone has suggested, your best bet is to contact the Greek Life office at FSU to get the best answer to your question. |
Here is some information about Transient students (it just gets murkier and murkier)
http://registrar.fsu.edu/services/transient/ Can someone explain the difference between a transient student and a dual enrolled student? Since there is a category for each, there must be some differences. Could it be that a transient student would be taking classes exclusively at the university that considers them a transient, while the dual enrolled student is taking classes at both schools? |
TSteven:
TCC is an independent institution that is considered a "feeder" cc for FSU. Santa Fe CC is the feeder school for the University of Florida.
