The Makeup Thread
Ok everyone, I really need help in this area.
Can anyone give me some good tips on Which make-up products that are good in quality, longlasting and have good prices? Maybeline and cover girl is out of the question, it breaks me out. Any advice would be helpful. |
Make-Up
Greetings and Salutations,
I think the best make-up, in my opinion is MAC. Pretty much all MAC products are good except the mascara (not worth it, Max Factor 2000 Calorie works wonders). There should be a make counter in Nordstroms or Macy's and in some malls there is a MAC store. |
MAC is the best ever
MAC is the best make up that could have ever been conceived! That's for real! I have practically have a make up counter (not for real but that's how much I have). Start off with one lip liner (CHESTNUT) and you'll be straight. Here are some of my favorite lip sticks/glasses/laquers:
Varushka (the tightest and sexiest color ever!) Media Cyber Fettish Fluid Explicit (lip glass) Oh Baby (lip glass) C Thru (lip glass) Nico (lip glass) Glossiant (laquer) Eye Shadows: Heavenly Bliss Nylon Bronze That little list should help you a tad. Mind you, CHESTNUT lip liner works great with all of the lip colors that I named. Other great lip liners are VINO and CORK. Good luck on getting "dolled" up! |

I thought I was the only one that geeked over this. There is no other color like it!!! NONE!! I wear neutral colors mostly though and love Relic and Modem(lipsticks). Shadow... Vex I wear mostly MAC products however Prescriptives (Nordstrom) will custom blend foundation. It's a little more on the expensive side but worth it especially if you're hard to match. |
Relic/Modem
I have those two colors too! Oh my goodness... I could talk about MAC all day. I actually went through my lipsticks to see how many I have...13 tubes of lipstick and about ten lip glasses! That's awful isn't it?!
|
i love M.A.C.
my favorite lip liner is of course chestnut as well as currant
i use the ebony eye liner i need only 2 eyeshadows - courduroy and camel lip glass: oh baby, explicit and c-thru lipstick: media, myth, cyber, fetish, film noir, coconutty, and relic if you are looking for a good mascara, i recommend origins double set of "underwear for lashes" and "fringe benefits." that has my eyelashes POPPIN i also like trish mcevoy makeup and bobbi brown essentials but, if cheap is the way you want to go, i'm of no help if cover girl breaks you out because that is the drug-store brand of makeup i use |
MAC and Fashion Fair
Fashion Fair for foundation and blush.
MAC for lip liners and lipstick: Chestnut/Photo Currant/Media Burgundy/Miss Dish |
quick question
of all of the suggestions that folks listed off, does skin tone play a role? (not that i am make-up illiterate) but i am curious if these shades cross the "color line"
|
I hardly wear make-up except lip gloss and a little eye makeup, but when I do, I tend to gravitate towards Fashion Fair. As far as eyeshadow, I love the duo with Winterberry/Golden Chestnut. And I WILL NOT GO ANYWHERE without my FF lip gloss in Sheer Drama. Except 8:00 am class. :p
|
If breakouts are an issue for you it would be very hard to recommend a product - color and quality is a different issue - I love Bobbi Brown and NARS - for lips and eyes, Lancome for their lip liner, Good old Fashion Fair for foundation and I actually like Iman's powder - but her lipsticks and liners are like clay!!
|
I have fairly sensitive skin. I have found that Black Opal foundation doesn't break me out. It also matches my skin tone better than any other drugstore brand.
I hope to try MAC someday, but I'm on a tight budget right now. But I've been very impressed when I've walked by their counter to view some of the makeovers they've done. Has anybody tried the Victoria's Secret line? |
I use Revlon faithfully. I really like their ColorStay line b/c it doesn't rub off and looks fresh all day. I use various other products. Basically whatever is not that expensive and looks nice all day.
I really wanna try MAC but it's sorta too expensive for my taste. Maybe one day I'll buy a lipstick or something. My friend wears it and loves it to death! |

Prescriptives, which I've used for more than 10 years, has a wide range of foundations and color cosmetics that could work with darker skin tones. :) |
Hello,
I am new to this board. I do theater make-up. I find that bobbi brown has the best foundation and conceler for women of color. You have to be a little careful with MAC foundation and conceler because it contains ingredients that can possibly make african-american skin appear ashy, especially women with medium colored skin. However, MAC is excellent for lip, cheek , and eye color!!! A little tip- most of us wear black mascara, but I find that brown mascara will bring out the color of the eyes more. Try a luminous brown by Revlon to bring out your eyes if they are brown. On the same note, never underestimate the power of a eyebrow wax. Sculpted, clean eyebrows give the face an instant lift and definition. I also know that many women of color do not wear blush, but a nice raisin colored blush is absolutely beautiful on african-american skin. The important thing to remember about make-up is to keep it as simple as possible. Being too generous in make-up application can be disasterous!!! Tigress |

"O" - it's my all time favorite MAC color - a classic that looks good on practically anyone. "Santiago" - I use it with "Explicit" lipglass. "Shag" Hmm, I'll have to check out a couple of of those glasses and the lacquer mentioned. One thing about MAC colors is that you need to try them for yourself - they might not look as good on you as they look on others. Several times I've seen someone in a color, bought it, and then when I tried it, I looked crazy. Examples are "Photo", "Film Noir" and "Media" - such CUTE colors, but none of them look good on me  I ended up giving them to my little sister, who they looked great on - she's always available to take a $13 tube off my hands... I recently bought one of those Cover Girl "OutLast" lipsticks that is supposed to last all day through anything. It works pretty good - it's like you put on the color, wait for it to set, then put a moisturizer over it, and touch it up with the moisturizer all day. I had to use make up remover to get it off. The color goes on kinda dry, but the moisturizer feels great. |

One thing I refuse to buy from MAC is there brushes. They're expensive as CHUCK (who's that:confused: )!! I've gone to Walgreens and Sally's and bought some really nice brushes. NYC is a cheap make up line that looks good on people. Truly, MAC Groupie |

Thanks for the blush tip Tigress! I never wear blush because i always felt like it didn't look "natural" on my skin. |

MAC is all a girl needs!!!
I must agree with everyone here that loves MAC. I use their:
Studio Fix Compact foundation, Chestnut Lipliner (a must have), Fluid and 'O' lipsticks Brow Set (does anyone else use this?? It keeps your brows in check all day and night) As for eyeshadow and more lipsticks, I bought the holiday kits that were available in Nov '00, and they come with an array of colors, but I don't know all the names :( however, I figued out you can use any lipsticks as long as you have CHESTNUT lipliner!! When I was younger and had more money to spend, I bought Clinique mascara, but Maybeline Great Lash works just as well, and it's cheaper. When I first learned about MAC, I thought the colors wouldn't work..they seemed very flashy and daring, but they are just wonderful. I really like the eyeshadows, because they don't cake-up, and its more "iridescent" than true color, if that makes any sense :) I reccomend going to the counter and tell them that you're new to MAC, and what they recommend. Surprisingly, I've always had a great experience with them, in Minneapolis and Chicago..hopefully they are as helpful in other cities as well. |
Hope this info helps

I felt the same way when I bought O. My MAC consultant applied it for me when I bought it, so of course it was perfect, but when I brought it home, it didn't look the same. So, when I wear it now, I either apply it with a lip brush, or blot. I think when I first tried it, I applied to much, and it didn't look right, because it's an orangy-red-pinkish color....oh, also using chestnut makes it look great. Oh, I also want to remind everyone to save their lipstick tubes...5 empty tubes=1 free lipstick. |

I don't wear foundation, but I do wear their presssed powder and I LOVE OH Baby. I never leave home w/o it. :) |
I hear everyone talking about MAC. Where do you get it? I used to love Bovanti, but they closed the stands here. :(
|
you can get it at nordstroms and macy's. if your city has a galleria, chances are they will have a m.a.c. store
|
I used to be a MAC addict, but the customer service in my area was getting worse, so I went to Sephora and tried their brand it's really good and it's cheaper too. But I remain ever faithful to Chanel glossimers for my lips.

I am a MAC junkie too but the counter and now even the MAC store are a bit too crowded sometimes so if you are already familiar with the colors you can go to www.maccosmetics.com they have the full line available to purchase and it got to my house/dorm relatively quickly.
Sephora Stores ( www.sephora.com ) also have a great variety of cosmetics at fairly reasonable prices depending on the brand. Even their store brand is pretty good. If you like lipglass stila's lipglaze is good a little more expensive ($24) Anna Sui Lip Gel is also good ($13) but to me the best (next to lipglass) is Christian Dior Diorific Plastic Shine Lip Gloss thats all i have to share for now :) |
It seems like everyone in this forum uses M.A.C. Does anyone use Clinque? I use it and I think it works well on women of a darker complection. How do you all feel about Clinque?

Yep, she is correct. MAC is at Macy's at Lenox, on the far right side-- kinda in a corner nook. Same floor as Mick's! I believe that's the 2nd floor :0) |

My mother and grandmother stay faithful to Clinique, which was the first major makeup/skin brand I used. I really tried their makeup, from foundation to lipstick, but I think that because my mother and grandmother are a lighter shade than I am, their colors work with their skin color. Also, Clinque didn't have enough "daring" colors.
However, I had a love/hate relationship with their skin care line. Now, I only use their eye makeup remover dramatic moisturizer and their facial makeup remover (for foundation). Has anyone ever tried MAC's skincare line?? |
