Local Greek Systems
Hi,
I am a Greek alum from an institution where our entire Greek system is comprised entirely of local chapters, no national organizations. We have an integrated alumni council that's starting to look at ways we might improve our Greek experience for our actives, and we'd like to know more about other organizations with similar systems. Do you know of any institutions whose entire systems are built entirely of local Greek organizations, or at least a majority of local organization? If so, would you mind sharing the names of those institutions? Thanks! |
Off the top of my head:
Otterbein Occidental University of the Redlands Young Harris College |
Thank you! That's already a huge help!
|
Muskingum College in Ohio has 12 greek chapters, 6 sororities, 6 fraternities, and 5 are local, 7 are national.
|
Tiffin University in OH is all local as well.
|
University of the South in Sewanee, TN.
|
Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas is all local also.
|
Doane College and Hastings College, both in Nebraska.
|
College of Wooster in Ohio.
Carnation - did the KD chapter at Sewanee close? |
Augustana College in Rock Island, IL is all local as well.
|
Mississippi University for Women (which has been admitting men for around 30 years) has a long tradition of locals / social clubs. I believe there are BGLO groups there now.

Wow! I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all your replies. I am doing some research to develop a marketing plan for the Greek community at my alma mater, and I am going to research each one of the schools listed thus far. Up until now, I was only aware of one other school with a local system--Trinity University in San Antonio. I had no idea I was in such great company! I'm going to keep checking this thread for updates, so if anyone has more schools to add, please do so!

On the fraternity side, Sewanee is mostly national (10 vs. 2 locals).
|
Also, Harding University in Arkansas has local Greek-letter something-or-others that they don't like to refer to as fraternities and sororities but function exactly the same.
|
Just remembered another: Bethel University in McKenzie, TN. Six locals and one NPHC.
|
Hope College is a Christian college in Michigan that has 16 Greek Organizations (8 fraternities, 8 sororities), two of which are national (one IFC and one NPHC) and the other 14 organizations are local.
|
Occidental has Theta but is otherwise all locals. Iona is heavily local.
|
And Trinity in Texas --- those are long-standing locals. (Ah, I see that is already on the list!)
Hamilton (NY) -- which is an interesting case study in and of itself ..... |
Ursinus College in PA has mostly local GLOs: Of the 5 sororities on campus, 4 are local (Tri Sigma being the exception). Of the 7 fraternities on campus, 5 are local (excepting Phi Kappa Sigma and Sigma Pi).

Your fraternity numbers are correct, however there are 2 locals that are currently not active on campus, but have an active alumni presence. Note: All locals with the exception of one sorority have been on the campus for over 30 years, with the majority of all the existing organizations ranging from between 60-100 years. Thanks for including UC, Dukemama!! :) |
Grove City College is another all local.

Here are some others I've come across:
Cornell College Luther College Midland University Dubuque William Penn Bethany Ottawa Gustavus Adolphus |
Bethany where? The one in WV definitely has nationals.

Bethany in W Virginia has the nationals. |
SUNY schools have many locals. And many of them have existed since the mid 1800s. I know Alpha Delta and Alpha Kappa Phi have been around for a while.
So SUNY Potsdam has one national (AST) and the others are all local: Sigma Gamma Phi, Zeta Gamma Sigma, Delta Lambda Nu, etc. |

Gallaudet University has SEVERL Local Fraternities and Sororities: Kappa Gamma, Alpha Sigma Pi (Both Fraternities). Phi Kappa Zeta, Delta Epsilon (Both Sororities)
We also have National Organizations on campus: Kappa Sigma and Delta Sigma Phi (fraternities) and Delta Zeta and Alpha Sigma Theta (sororities) |
If I'm not mistaken, Kenyon College has all local sororities. The fraternities are both local and national.
|
I believe Loyola New Orleans used to be all locals but is now about half and half.
