The following items come from a scrapbook which belonged to a Chi Omega pledge:

No kidding! LOL

I love how the local paper not only identified the girl's hometown, but it she was local, her address!

I have never heard of legacies counting as 1/2 a person in quota!

I think it's kind of funny?...interesting?...creepy?...how they mentioned people's street addresses. I think that was fairly common back then, but that would never fly now!

Btw thanks for sharing these. I love seeing stuff like this. Everything sounds so charming. It was such a different time!

Please consider the time that this occurred. 1949. That was - what- 64 years ago?

No Brown v. Board (1954), no Civil Rights Act (1964), etc. Disney's Song of the South (never released on video in the US) was released in 1946, and Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah won Best Song in 1947.

I'm asking that we realize that context is everything before we start clutching pearls and pointing fingers. Historical perspective is valuable. We do burn bridges when we need to remember not to go back down the road from whence we came.

Hence my comment about it being such a different time. And since it's so out of context today, it really, really stands out (of context).

Thanks so much for posting this. That is the year one of my favorite Kappa Delta sisters pledged at Rhodes and there was her name in the newspaper as a new pledge.
I am going to call her right now so she can lurk on Greek Chat and see these wonderful clippings that are very real memories for her.

This is the college where my mother-in-law became a Chi Omega!

Actually, I was reminded that she was already a member at this time. Pledged in 1947, I think. The other person was same 1st name and hometown but wrong maiden name. Still fun. I haven't talked to her yet to see whose names she recognizes but will soon.

A slight detour. One of the AOPi pledges was from Pekin, IL. It's a town north of Springfield, near Peoria. Until the early 1980s, the teams were known as the Pekin Chinks. They are now the Pekin Dragons. The town next to Pekin is Tremont. The teams are still the Tremont Turks.

This was so much fun to look through!!! This is my alma mater and I love seeing old pics of any and all the sororities:)

Thanks so much for posting these!
