question about a saying!

Hey Deltas I joined a Tridelta page on facebook and have seen people using BBPB. What does this stand for? I've never heard it used by anyone in my chapter but I would like to know what it stands for. I know it's a secret so can someone just pm me? thanks

Good luck with that.

Why in the world would you ask us that? Even if we knew, do you really think ANY of us would divulge part of ritual to some random person on GC? I do not believe for a second that you are even a member of Tri Delta.

thetalady 09-29-2013 05:19 PM

troll?

OK, so a little research shows that you have been an initiated member of your sorority since at least March 2012. And this saying is a secret that they STILL won't tell you the meaning of? I call BS on you.

hey guys! i'm fairly new to greekchat and the greek system. i'm a sophomore and rushed this past fall and have been initiated into my sorority. i have a problem and need your help! my sorority has a bad reputation as being "ugly" and "boring" and "weird." i have no idea where this reputation came from but all other sororities hate us and frats hate us. we can't get a social with any of the big, popular frats. im feeling very down about this because it's like people look at me funny when i tell them im an "XYZ" and i just dont know what to do. i want to have to same opportunity as other girls to meet guys in the better frats and do fun things like derby days. please give me some advice!

If you're actually a Tri Delta, why not just ask one of your chapter sisters? ...........

I wouldn't call BS necessarily. I know that in my fraternity, while there are certain things anyone familiar with the Ritual would know, there can also be things—including acronyms—that are common in some chapters or provinces but not in others. Sometimes the meaning is obvious to any initiated brother, but sometimes it isn't. I've had to ask "could someone please explain what this means" before about a bunch of letters used as a closing in correspondence. When I was told, it wasn't anything I ever would have figured out on my own. But is was commonly used in some chapters.

sconnie, this is the kind of question you ask sisters who know you in real life.

thetalady 09-29-2013 05:48 PM

I see your point MysticCat...

IndianaSigKap 09-29-2013 06:09 PM

To add to what MysticCat said, there are abbreviations or acronyms that are region specific, as well. In my chapter we used SLAM. However, at my friend's SK chapter they used SKLAM, and at another SK chapter where I had acquaintances they used DL. I had no idea what DL was and couldn't figure it out. When I finally asked, I found out it was Dove Love. When I advised, the chapter there used LITD. Again, had never heard it before but was able to deduce that it was Love In The Dove.

I can see why the OP would be curious but if you're on the Facebook page, why not ask there? It may or may not be a secret. However, if it is a secret, the OP needs to know to NEVER exchange secrets via PM.

To be safe, people should remember that some of our GLOs attempt to rely less on random people on the Internet and encourage us to ask questions to neighboring collegiate or graduate chapters, friends from other chapters, advisors who are also members, and local/regional/district/national/international bodies. You may feel silly that your entire chapter (not just you) doesn't know the answer to the question but your silliness is kept more private than if you inquire on the Internet.

thetalady 09-29-2013 06:59 PM

The thing that bothered my tremendously was that the OP specifically stated thet she knows that this abbreviation is "secret", which I understand to mean ritual. I don't think ANY actual Greek member would ask about ritual on an open forum like this one. Something like TLAM/ SLAM/ SKLAM/ DL etc., is nothing more than hello to a sister in a little code, far from ritual.

pinksequins 09-29-2013 07:18 PM

Which are sometimes abbreviations for Greek words, so, forgive me, but .... Beta, beta, pi, beta. Banana fanna fo feta. Me, Mi, MoMeta. Beta!

Thus ends the mystery. ; - )

????

 Where have I been? The letters BBPB I have never seen written or heard in any reference to Delta Delta Delta. The first time I saw them was in the post on this forum.

Must be some regional thing, but it definitely is associated with Tri Delta on some level. Google bbpb, Tri Delta and you'll get a ton of hits.

Might have to start that ;) I think it's Be the Best, Pledge the Best...something to work towards.

Yeah, but there can be a spectrum of things between true ritual and cute sayings. And I remember discussions on GC about whether letter closings like SLAM and YITB are considered secret or not—some were surprised to learn they're not. I can easily imagine things that aren't ritual per se but are rooted in ritual.

But yeah, people should know better than to ask in a public forum.

DubaiSis 09-30-2013 09:30 PM

Alpha Xi Delta has a couple of those. One is not ritual, but I would say still secret. And not used so often that every sister everywhere (or 40 years later) might remember it. But I wouldn't ask on an open forum.

The other part I found odd is, not that I know a ton about Tri Delta, but I've never heard of a sister called a Delta. That alone raised a red flag. I couldn't have answered her anyway, but I would have cautioned any of my Tri Delta friends to answer with caution, if it's a secret that people care about keeping. Maybe it's not a big deal though.

Totally random and probably off topic, but at Mizzou the Tri Deltas sometimes go by "Deltas." My D has a friend in that chapter.

A lot of the women in my collegiate chapter call each other 'Deltas', so it may be a newer thing. I know that when I was a collegian 2-3 years ago, it was pretty common.

However, to answer your question, you need to ask one of your sisters or an officer. This is not the place to ask questions about things like that.
