A Hunger Games Recruitment
I do have an account under a different name, I opened up a new one so that I could be honest about something that happened during this recruitment story, that I wouldn’t be able to be honest about with my regular username. Please do not PM me and ask me to give you my regular username, because I won’t.
I wrote a recommendation for a PNM, who I shall call Lucy. The chapters at Clemson are: Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Phi Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Delta Zeta Gamma Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Delta Kappa Kappa Gamma Sigma Kappa Zeta Tau Alpha As I haven’t seen a Hunger Games recruitment thread yet, I decided it was high time for one. The order of the characters in no way reflects the order of the chapters. Katniss Peeta Primrose Haymitch Cinna Gale Johanna Beetee Cato Wiress Glimmer Rue Recruitment started on the 22nd. Lucy visited 6/12 houses this day. Lucy didn’t have much to say about the houses in general except for Haymitch. She got in the round and they were all fairly nice and all of a sudden she realized she had to use the really bad. She had been drinking plenty of water. When she mentioned it to the active she was talking too, the active gave her a disgusted look. When she informed me of this situation occurring, I became incredibly upset as Haymitch is my sorority. I didn’t know what to do. I finally broke down and contacted a close sister/friend of mine and explained the situation, asking for her advice. She told me that I should contact the recruitment advisor because the active should never have treated a PNM that way. I did contact the recruitment advisor and explained the situation, she thanked me for contacting her. |
Lucy called me this morning and we discussed her schedule. She was a bit upset because she hadn’t been invited back to the possible 9. I’m thinking “oh god she got really heavy cuts”, she was invited back to 8. She was just comparing herself to her roommate who actually had to “drop” a house or two (she was invited back to more than 9). I told her that she got a GREAT schedule and that she should be thrilled to being invited back to 8. I told her that I could almost guarantee that some one in her group didn’t get that many. I then asked her who invited her back and what she thought about all of them going into this next round.
She was invited back to... Peeta: she said that she felt comfortable at this house and that the girls were really easy to talk to. Primrose: she actually liked that this chapter is a bit on the smaller side. She felt that they were also really easy to talk to. Gale: one of her favorites after the first round. She felt special because the president came up and introduced herself and she had heard that that is a “good sign”. She did rank them in her bottom 3. Johanna: her roommate is in this chapter, so she really likes them. Cato: she ranked this chapter in the bottom. She was kind of bummed to see them on her list again for this round. I asked her why and she said that the conversations were strained for her. I advised her to keep an open mind. Wiress: she also ranked Wiress as on her bottom chapters. Just like Cato, I advised her to keep an open mind. Glimmer: Glimmer is her favorite so far. She loves everything about this chapter. She feels incredibly comfortable in this house. She said that she feels that she could be her “silly, goofy” self in this chapter. Rue: Lucy didn’t have much to say about Rue. I’m not sure if they just weren’t memorable to her or what. Before we hung up, I encouraged her to have a great day and to just keep an open mind. |
Lucy gave me a call this evening to let me know how her round went.
Primrose- she said this house was “okay” and felt that the conversations were forced. Glimmer- she still LOVES this house, but had a oop’s moment. She didn’t realize until the end of the party that she was chewing gum the entire party. She is worried that she will be dropped because of it. I encouraged her not to think that way and I wouldn’t be surprised if what happened to her has 1) happened to other PNM’s and 2) to the actives. I told her that they probably didn’t even notice. Gale- Lucy was actually glad to have had a chance to talk to the sisters from this chapter again. She liked them a lot more today. Johanna- Lucy said that her party with Johanna was interesting because her roommate was the one who “picked her up”. The laughed about it, because it was random, as the chapter doesn’t know they are roommates. They “pretended” that they didn’t know each other. Lucy was a bit paranoid that they would get caught. Again, I advised her not to stress about it too much, because I think her roommate will vouch for her. Rue- she felt like they could have cared less about her. Peeta- Peeta is another of her favorites. She felt that the girls are really friendly and they had good conversations. Cato & Wiress- she felt that the conversations with these two chapters were drawn out, hard to get going and there was a lot of silence. Lucy can be invited back to a maximum of 6 parties tomorrow. She plans to rank Cato, Wiress. She is worried about not getting invited back to 6 parties. She mentioned that last year she was only invited back to 3 in this round. I then gave her the positive to it, that of the 8 chapters she went back to, there are really only 2 that she cannot see herself in right now and that is Cato and Wiress. I also told her that if she happens to see Cato and Wiress on her party schedule tomorrow that she needs to look at it this way “they see something in you that makes them feel that you would make an excellent Cato and Wiress” and that she has only met a small portion of the chapter. Once I put it in those terms, she was like “your right”. She is still nervous, understandably. She gets her schedule tomorrow at 6am (man that is god awful early). I told her to call me, if she needs to, as soon as she got her schedule. |
I cannot believe the member of that one house did that to the poor PNM! I can definitely empathize. Even fairly recently, as an active, I almost had to signal to one of my sisters to come talk to my PNM for me once because I seriously thought I was going to have an...errm...issue right there! It was pretty scary, because I was tryingto make a good impression, of course. I ended up sitting through, but I know that I would not want to have someone making faces at me/judging me because I needed to use the restroom!

You have a bit more guts than I do, I'm not sure I'd have the guts to call and tell the advisor what happened. I wouldn't want to get anyone in trouble. |
So Haymitch didn't give her a second chance. How terribly, terribly sad. :(

greekxgal- I know it is hard to imagine that an active could treat a PNM that way. Round 3 Lucy texted me an let me know that she was invited back to 6 houses! Yeah! She was invited back to... Primrose Gale Johanna Cato Wiress Rue She was a bit disappointed that Peeta and Glimmer had released her but overall she was happy with her schedule. I encouraged her to have fun and to remember that Cato and Wiress see something special in her, as do all the chapters that invited her back. Lucy texted me when all the parties were over for the day (late night as she texted me after 10pm), she indicated that the day had been hectic but that the day went well. Preference Night is tonight and tomorrow night with bid day being on Wednesday. |

Do you think it's possible that the Haymitch rusher thought she was blowing off their chapter by asking to use the rest room during that party? Not excusing her "look of disgust," but it's possible she interpreted it that way at first blush, and didn't realize it was a real emergency. |
Sciencewoman, she actually didn't ask if she could use the restroom, she just said that she needed to use the restroom. I'm not sure if the PNM's can just leave in the middle of parties.
Lucy just texted me and told me that she has been invited back to Primrose, Gale, and Rue for preference. What I LOVE is that her opinion of Rue has changed over the course of recruitment. On the first two rounds she wasn't sure about Rue. She thought they weren't too interested in her and the conversations were lacking. Now she is over the moon that Rue and Gale are two of the chapters she will pref! I am so excited for her! Question though, if she maximizes her options and lists all three chapters on her bid card is she guaranteed a bid in one of the three? If so, I know that she will be Greek and that she will be a new member of one of those three chapters and I couldn't be happier for her. Now to figure out what gift to give her. I plan on doing some research on gifts for those three chapters and have an idea (what to get her). |

I spoke to Lucy this afternoon. She is so excited about pref night. She then started asking me about how "cuts" work tonight. I had to smile because it thrilled me to be able to tell her that I "am" 99% sure that as long as she maximizes her options and lists all three chapters on her bid card then she will receive a bid in one of the three.
I could hear over the phone her "shock" (lack of a better word). She was like "no way". I was like "yeah really". She even go more excited. I told her that one of those chapters would be her future home. Lucy got giddy with excitement. She asked about what to expect from pref and even a bit about how bid matching works (which I gave a very rough generalization). The only thing that seems weird is that Clemson does two nights of pref rounds. Lucy received 3 invites, is the max 4? Either way she is content and happy and right now that is what matters! |
The max is three at Clemson, I can tell you that much. I think the reason Clemson does two nights of pref rounds is because they're trying to keep the pref locations in only a couple of places instead of spreading them all across campus, but I could be completely talking out of my butt here. With floors of dorms that don't have enough space for recruitment it can make scheduling parties a little difficult.
I hope Lucy has fun at pref tonight and tomorrow night! Maybe we'll end up being sisters, who knows? I cannot wait to find out what chapter she joins! |
It's neat to have two live stories going on at once for the same campus! Glad Lucy is excited about her options! Sounds like she can put the bad experience behind her.

I just spoke to Lucy about pref round.
Rue- Lucy is COMPLETELY in love with this chapter! She was preffed by an active she had met during the week. The active told Lucy that she wanted to pref her and that she had been telling her roommate about Lucy all week. Methinks the girl who preffed Lucy has a little rush crush. I asked Lucy what changed with Rue, as at the beginning of recruitment she really didn't care for them much. She told me "they make me feel happy". You can't get much better than that! She liked their pref ceremony. The only thing she was bummed about was after the ceremony, it was time for her to leave the party. She really wanted to talk to the active after the ceremony. Gale- While Gale has been a favorite of hers all week, they really didn't impress her much at pref. She was preffed by a girl she didn't know, someone she hadn't spoken to (am I the only one who thinks that is a bit odd). The active didn't talk about Gale and the sisterhood. When Lucy asked why she joined Gale her answer was "I was an only child". To Lucy that really wasn't an answer of why she joined Gale, as more why she went through recruitment. What also seemed a bit odd to Lucy was the girl who preffed her was a senior, she kind of expected her to be a bit better at "preffing" someone. Primrose- Again Lucy was preffed by someone she didn't know and hadn't talked to. She didn't have much to say about Primrose. She told me she wasn't impressed by their pref night or ceremony. But it seems like Primrose has kind of fallen into her middle of ones she has liked all week. She ranked... 1. Rue 2. Gale 3. Primrose She finds out her bid at 4:30 (EST). She is super nervous (understandably). She really wants Rue. I told her that we will both think positive that when she opens her bid card it says Rue on it. I told her no matter what Rue, Gale and Primrose will get an AWESOME sister. I also told her to remember that no matter where she ends up, she will find sisters that will be her friends for life and some who won't, that is the nature of the beast. I'm praying her bid card says Rue. |
It sounds like Gale and Primrose need to work on their behind-the-scenes matching. Sometimes I wonder if it's just bad luck that several PNMs are coming to the same party who had connections to the same rusher during the week, and the rusher gets matched with one of the other PNMs. Either way, it's probably just a sign of less strategic/effective matching, and that few women are really good preffers, as opposed to anything lacking with the chapter. A lot of PNMs seem to mention this in their stories.
I know the woman who preffed me at Gamma Phi was REALLY good...she let me hold her badge in my hand and she made it seem like being a Gamma Phi was just the best thing ever, without going over the top. In real life, she was more aloof and didn't match that initial perception I had of her...but man, was she good at preffing! I'm rooting for Rue, too. |
For what it's worth, even now I would be an awful rusher. Some are just not made for it. I can talk your ear off for days informally, but get me into a situation like this and it all goes down. However, I could come up with a better reason for why I joined.

I had a similar experience with being with girls I didn't know at both parties! Now I'm REALLY curious to know if we have any houses in common! I figured out that one of mine is not hers but there's still the chance, however small, that we could be sisters. Best of luck to her and I hope she gets Rue :)

Lucy began texting me on her way to pick up her bid, I guess the time was pushed back to 5pm (EST).
She then called me...... Lucy received a bid too.... Primrose AKA Sigma Kappa Lucy was devastated. She could barely talk. She didn't understand what happened. She thought Rue "wanted" her. I encouraged her to go to her bid day activities with Sigma Kappa but she hung up with me. I know a lot of her feelings are because of the emotionally exhausting recruitment week in general. She fell in love with a chapter and didn't get matched with them. I will keep y'all updated. --- On a personal note, I cannot believe how emotionally exhausting recruitment is. Lucy is just a friend and my heart is breaking for her. She is in pain. It is hard for her to see the positives in the situation right now. I cannot imagine how it is for mom's. I don't have any kids yet, but OMG recruitment is going to be a nightmare when I have a daughter going through it. |
I don't know how I feel about this one. I'm glad to get a great new member, but I wish she was happy to be with us. I'm hoping she'll grow into it and will be able to help the chapter make their pref ceremony more memorable and touching for future recruitments. Keep us posted!

Please, please, please don't think that this is a "diss" somehow to you, because it's not. Talking to Lucy this week I KNOW that she liked Sigma Kappa, the entire week. I think just preference at Rue won her over more than SK did. I also truly believe that once the emotions settle she will be fine. I think it just hit her really hard. Think about it, when you've got your heart set on one thing and you get another, it hurts. We've all been there with different situations in our lives. I just think with recruitment it is even harder. The girls are selling themselves to the chapters and the chapters are selling themselves to the girls. I KNOW that Sigma Kappa is an AMAZING sorority. I ALSO know that she will be amazing in it! Please don't lose hope. She is young and she is emotional right now. |

I think you're right. Being caught up in the moment is draining and then when it doesn't go as expected you don't always react in the normal way. I do believe that going to voicemail is a good sign. :-)

If Rue does such a great job with their pref parties, and it sounds like they do at this chapter, they probably had a lot of PNMs ranking them highly on their cards.

To anyone who may fault this poor girl for not being ecstatic with her bid, hold off. She is trying. She went to bid day. Give her a chance. Recruitment isn't always sunshine and butterflies...even when it ends up being our beloved sororities. I can tell you that more than once I was the sister pulling the crying NM into a room on bid day for a pep talk before taking her to the bathroom to wash her face. Those sisters frequently went on to be the best AOIIs. It can be hard to process rejection and put on a happy face in front of a bunch of screaming happy people when all you want to do is have a pity party. If you had a day or two to think it over, you'd probably thank your lucky stars that you got a bid at all and move on, but the shock is more than some girls can take. I hope she finds a Sigma Kappa sister that bonds with her at bid day and comes back lavender and maroon to the core!

Ouch, joining my SK sisters and saying I don't know how I feel about this one...my emotional side talking. My rational side agrees with all that has been said, she is a 18 year old who has just gone through an emotional week and is dealing with disappointment....hoping our SK sisters can show Lucy how much they wanted her...based on this thread, I can see why!
Welcome Lucy to the mystic bond! (SK sisters, do we still say that phrase? are we allowed to say it in public??) Clearly I was never in charge of ritual. |
