AKA License Plate

Sorors, I've wondered what states have these... you know, like your undergrad has a plate, wildlife has a plate, blah blah blah. One day I was thinking, instead of trying to come up with a personalized plate, it would be nice if AKA had a license plate. Well, look at what I got in email today!! I'm going to try and find out (I have no idea how yet, lol) what all states have them! If you know, Post and let us know, too!! :)

*I hope I did that right... I've never tried to post a pic like this before....*

It didn't work... I'll be back when i have this figured out, lol...

kiml122 01-04-2002 12:39 PM

Question........

am I the only one that the pic doesn't open for?!

AKA2D '91 01-04-2002 01:50 PM

From her email...

Last year there was a campaign underway in Louisiana to get the plates made. Here, there has to be a list where there are more than 100 or 1000 signatures, before 1 plate can be made. I called our office of motor vehicles and had my name placed on the list. I don't know what's happened since then.

I know I saw pictures of a plate from Ney York . It didn't look like the one from Tennessee.

Ideal, call your department of motor vehicles and ask them about the vanity plates and see if there is a petition, etc. to have on started for AKA.

I believe that the state of Virginia has vanity plates for Alpha Kappa Alpha as well as the other nphc sororities and fraternities but I'm not sure.

Ideal08 01-04-2002 03:28 PM

Thank you....

Techie_girl!!!! Thank you SO much, because I clearly couldn't get it to work!! :)

techie_girl_44 01-04-2002 03:35 PM

no problem...

...sitting at work with nothing to do because everybody else is on vacation leaves me a lot of free time. ;)

suntzu1963 01-04-2002 04:18 PM

Maryland does too

A few of my bros have them.

That is cool! Makes me wish I was back in Tennessee again (lived there from 1990 to 1993). :)

Here is the link to the plates in TN

Other Tenn Plates (organizations)

Hey Suntzu!! *waving* Thanks for the greeting and the invite! I'll stroll on over to Iotaville! :)

I am seriously going to call our BMV and see about this, cuz I'm lightweight jealous, lol. And it's even worse because Ohio is celebrating it's bicentennial in '03, and they have new plates because of it, UGLY!!! They are red, white, and blue, and I just hate them. I'm glad I don't have to have them, but I'm sick of seeing them. It would be a breath of fresh air to see some org plates!!!!! 'Specially if they are Pink and Green!! That is just too cute!!

Ideal, this might help

Ohio License Plates

This stuff is interesting. I just put info in a search engine and found sites for license plates for a lot of states.

Hope this helps Ideal08.

WenD08 01-04-2002 05:02 PM

Soror Ideal08, i tried to get an AKA plate for OH as recently as '00. i contacted the BMV (1000 sorors are needed), i had a committee in my chapter, i had a design, AND sent letters to every active chapter in the state. several times. if you hadn't heard about it, it means folks weren't paying attention:rolleyes: :( :( . now having said that, i would be willing to try again. i, too, want this to happen, but not with those sad patriotic plates:p

prayerfull 01-04-2002 05:07 PM

I just checked out the California DMV's website for their requirements. Cali requires 7,500 people to apply for the special plates before they will produce them.....

amycat412 01-04-2002 05:09 PM

On a semi-unrelated note that Steeltrap will appreciate--

I've also heard if a certain # doesn't maintain the plates year to year ( I heard in CA its 7000 sold each year or something like that)-- the DMV can pull them.

CA's UCLA plate is in danger of going away! No complaints from this USC alum.

Ladies, those AKA plates are so coool!

LOL at the UCLA plate going away. I'm not going to complain either.:D

cash78mere 01-04-2002 08:03 PM

Hello ladies!

I think those plates are very cool. I wish AXO had them!

But I was just wondering...do you have to show proof that you are a member to receive the plates? Does the DMV actually check organization records?

That could start major problems if they didn't!

:)

techie_girl_44 01-04-2002 09:40 PM

yes you do...

..have to show proof that you are a member of whatever organization you are trying to get a plate for. The websites that I saw specifically had that noted beneath the license plate.

kiml122 01-05-2002 04:11 PM

Oh My...

That TN plate is really, really tight.:)

I agree, I am in TN and not a member. IF I am ever honored to gain membership I would certainly like to obtain one. Though I have never seen one on anyone's car. I have seen plenty of the frames and AKA plates but not license plates.

 hmmm I wonder why not?

Jody 01-05-2002 09:46 PM

I live in FL which has specialized plates. I have a Florida A&M specialized plate with vanity letters-BAAKA, my line sister has a regular FL tag that says FAMUAKA. When I lived in Michigan, AKA was a vanity plate, one could get a license plate that said AKA001, but the state handed out the numbers in the order that you appeared at DMV.

AKA2D '91 01-06-2002 09:58 PM

Personalized plate

I had a Grambling vanity plate on my car I got in '94, either it was stolen or it fell off. Anyway, I had heard a year or so ago that our school's plate production was in jeopardy also. I guess it's okay now. I still see the plates.

:D

But when I did have my vanity plate, I inquired about getting it personalized and I was informed that it was not possible. (That's Lowzyana, for ya!)

mccoyred 01-07-2002 10:26 AM

Maryland

I have seen every D9 org represented on MD plates. In fact, they are on at least the second version of the plates for most orgs.
in order to obtain them, you must go through your org to certify you are a member. The chairperson handles the paperwork w/ the DMV.

AKA2D '91 12-17-2002 11:16 PM

I'm excited ya'll. I ordered my AKA plate. It's available!

Yaaaaaayyyyyyyy! Here it is:http://omv.dps.state.la.us/images/AKA.jpg

It's about time Lozyana does something right! :D

Edit: You have to prove that you are a member when you order. So, anyone just can't order a plate. :p

Thanks to the Nu Gamma Omega chapter BR for organizing this effort. I know I place my name on the list almost 2 years ago.

#1 goes to Soror Julia Purnell. Sorors should know why.... :D

Ideal08 12-18-2002 01:36 AM

I must say, I am jealous of this most recent development.

However, Soror 2D, CONGRATS!!! Sport your plates with PRIDE!! :D

evaclear04 12-18-2002 10:05 AM

Flawda SUCKS!

In the state of florida we have to have 15,000 signatures and pay $60,000.00 application fee! Am i the only one who thinks that's a bit much!

AKA2D '91 12-18-2002 10:33 AM

It must be easier in Lowzyana. There are high schools with their own plates and a church.

We had to pay $25.00 for the plate.

Now soror, you know the plates will be on the Grey Ghost with PRIDE! I just have to get another Gram Alumni tag to go around it. The one I have isn't VISIBLE enough. :D

VA only has plates for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. at this time. I think Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc might be next.

Girl, ain't it the troof! I went to our DMV site a few weeks ago after seeing some other tight tags and saw that information and was none too happy! http://www.clicksmilie.de/sammlung/s...smiley-037.gif And that $60,000! What Gubna Bush gon' do with that? Why does it take that much to make 1 plate? He already cuttin' our school's budgets - does he want blood? I'm sorry - I digress. . .

Anyway,
I WANT THAT PLATE!!!!! http://www.clicksmilie.de/sammlung/t...smiley-040.gif (me having a tantrum!)

BabyBlue91 04-27-2003 07:07 PM

Jersey's process is similar, but requires 500 paid applications before they'll even create the master.

OH AKA Plates - I'm workin' on it!

Sorors and sisterfriends,

i'm trying to get AKA plates here in OH. this is my second try and i'm hoping our state will join NY, TN, etc. with our very own plates. interested and you're in OH, let me know:D

Greekgrrl 04-29-2003 05:45 PM

Excuse the board crash, but does anyone know if Missouri has these plates? I may be hallucinating, but I could have sworn the last time I went to get my plates renewed I saw some fabulous AKA and Delta vanity plates (darn you great NPHC orgs swamping us poor NPC orgs with your numbers! :D ). When I checked the Dept. of Revenue site I didn't see them...

Can anyone assuage my curiosity?

Greekgrrl

WenD08 05-19-2003 04:30 PM

thought i'd bring this back to the top...

OH Sorors,

i sent out info on the AKA license plate project to OH grad chapters last week. undergrad chapters will get their info in the fall simce the year is almost over. those that are interested are asked to contact their local grad chapters to sign the petition. we need 1000 sorors (active, inactive, financial, non-financial, it doesn't matter) to sign up to make this happen. i'm hoping that this state joins the other six with a license plate for sorors:D
questions/comments? send me a message.
can you tell i'm excited about this?:p

Ain't this a blip?? My car is still registered in Ohio, but I can't sign the petition from here!!! :( And MD and VA have tags, but still not DC. But a sista can't afford to register her car down here anywhere, let alone the insurance rates. Soror Wendi, I would like the plates!! I'll be there next month and again in July or August. Maybe I can get my signature on!! :)

WenD08 05-20-2003 11:49 AM

please do! as long as a soror's car is registered in Ohio, she can sign the petition. Soror Ideal08, i appreciate the support. spread the word to all sorors that you know. my fingers and toes are crossed that this will happen:D
