Clemson Recruitment 2013/clemsongirl's Recruitment Story!

Hey y'all! Since I haven't seen a thread about Clemson's recruitment and it officially starts tomorrow I thought I'd combine it with my recruitment story so I don't have two dueling threads running. Clemson's recruitment schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, Aug. 20th at 8:30 PM: Pre-Recruitment Movie Social
Wednesday, Aug. 21st at 7 PM: Orientation
Thursday, Aug. 22nd and Friday, Aug. 23rd from 5-10:45 PM: Round One (Open House)
Saturday, Aug. 24th from 9 AM-2:15 PM and 5-10:15 PM: Round Two (Philanthropy)
Sunday, Aug. 25th from 9 AM-2:25 PM and 5:30-10:55 PM: Round Three (Sisterhood)
Monday, Aug. 26th and Tuesday, Aug. 27th from 5:30-11 PM: Round Four (Preference)
Wednesday, Aug. 28th at 6:15 PM: Bid Day!

Clemson's recruitment is a little different from other big recruitments in that since the chapters live in floors of Clemson-owned dorms that are spread all across campus, the rounds are held in the basketball coliseum and the student center with busing provided to get the PNMs from one party to the next should they need to change buildings. The first two rounds, as I understand it, are done in the concourse of the basketball coliseum with curtains dividing it into twelve different segments. I'm expecting the chants to be very, very loud since I'll be able to hear all twelve of them at once!

I don't know the number of girls going through recruitment this year (I asked one of the graduate assistants for Fraternity and Sorority life and she said well over 2000...I don't think she's right on that since we're not quite as large-scale as Alabama). Quota last year was 64 and the year before that it was 58. There is also an upperclassman quota but I do not know exactly how that is calculated. Registration ends tonight at midnight. Classes start on Wednesday night so the PNMs and actives are going to have a very busy first few days of school!

There are twelve NPC chapters at Clemson:
Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Chi Omega
Gamma Phi Beta
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Zeta
Zeta Tau Alpha
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Sigma Kappa
Chi Omega

I will henceforth be referring to them (in no particular order) as:
Aries
Taurus
Gemini
Cancer
Leo
Virgo
Libra
Scorpio
Sagittarius
Capricorn
Aquarius
Pisces

I am a legacy to one chapter on campus and I do have recs for every chapter (assuming they were all sent in-there were a couple of women I just could not get a hold of for confirmation). I am an involved sophomore with a GPA well above the 2.70 minimum to go through recruitment so while I am not expecting a full schedule full of all my favorites every round I am confident that I will end up in a good home for me :) I feel like I could be happy in any house right now and despite being frequently asked by my friends which chapters I am "aiming for" I do not have any favorites at this point. I will do my best to post daily updates on my own recruitment.

Good luck to all the chapters and PNMs and Go Tigers!

amIblue? 08-19-2013 11:47 AM

Good luck! Have fun!

SIGMANU@MSU 08-19-2013 11:49 AM

I taught at Clemson for a year and I had great students from every sorority. From what I understand there are quite a few girls that wait until Sophomore year to go through recruitment at Clemson. Good Luck and Go Tigers!

Sciencewoman 08-19-2013 11:54 AM

I hope you have a wonderful week and find your home! Keep up the great attitude!

Clemsongirl,

You have a GREAT attitude! Good Luck and have fun!

Bamamom16 08-19-2013 12:37 PM

Wishing you a very happy recruitment! I have a dear friend's daughter who is going through as a freshman, and I helped her with recs. I am hoping she has a great recruitment as well!

ASUADPi 08-19-2013 01:11 PM

Good luck with recruitment.

FSUZeta 08-19-2013 01:34 PM

Yay!! Good luck!

Brenda Bond 08-19-2013 01:42 PM

I also have a PNM going through as a sophomore this year at Clemson. I wish her the best of luck.

sigmagirl2000 08-19-2013 02:19 PM

I, too, have a PNM going through :). Best of luck to everyone in finding their home!

I suppose I'll start off the rooting for chapters by saying "Let's go Virgo!" since it's my sign and my birthstone color! (This might be pointless rooting if chapters haven't been assigned to colors/ signs yet)

clemsongirl 08-19-2013 03:39 PM

Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone! I actually have one question that I feel you wise women of recruitment may be able to answer for me. Pref is over two nights, so should I wear two different dresses or would it be okay to just wear the same one twice? Right now I only have one picked out but since I have a wardrobe full of dresses it would not be the end of the world for me to find another one if I need to.

WCsweet<3 08-19-2013 03:43 PM

I think you would be fine either way. It might be nice to have a back up in case something is spilled on night 1.

I think you're safe using the same dress - it's not like you'll be revisiting the same houses in it. Exceptions for me would be if it gets sweaty the first day (never a good look the second day), if you have two dressed that you love equally and want to wear them both, or if you are looking for a handy excuse to buy yet another cute pref dress (which I will admit might be enough to sway me).

Might you end up with all of your pref parties on the same day? I assume the parties are spread over two days to accomodate the large numbers of parties each chapter must hold due to the # of PNMs, but I would be interested to hear Clemson schedule specifics from a Tiger. :)

It looks like it's possible to have all three on one day, since the Greek Life website says they're only an hour long. Going by the schedule each sorority could have up to five pref parties a night. I am curious to see how many girls each party will have.

Thank you everyone for the advice! I think I'm going to wear my pre-determined pref dress one night and then see how I feel for the second (if needed). Y'all are the best!

DGTess 08-19-2013 04:21 PM

Best of luck to you.

I'm presuming my niece elected not to participate, since I've heard nada from her.

Tulip86 08-19-2013 05:12 PM

Good luck Clemsongirl!

clemsongirl 08-20-2013 06:20 PM

Update Numero Uno!

I went to Tiger Prowl today (basically the organization fair) and saw the tables the various sororities had set up. To my dismay, however, the tables were staffed by Pi Chis so I couldn't really talk to the members and get my face on their radar as well as learn anything about their sisterhood. I was a little disappointed that there weren't any affiliated sisters to talk to but I'm sure that I will be doing enough of that this upcoming week so it doesn't bother me too much:)

I just got a call from one of the Pi Chis reminding me that I'm signed up for sorority recruitment and when the events are, etc. I'm headed off to the pre-recruitment movie social in a little bit. I'll keep y'all posted on how it goes!

FSUZeta 08-20-2013 08:00 PM

Have fun at your movie!

clemsongirl 08-20-2013 10:21 PM

So the pre-recruitment movie social was just a screening of Easy A that started late because they were completely booked and had to put girls who hadn't already made the donation to get in on a waiting list while they waited to see whether everyone would show up. Hopefully orientation tomorrow will be a little better run!

FSUZeta 08-21-2013 09:25 AM

Oh..I hope so too!

clemsongirl 08-21-2013 10:44 PM

Orientation!!

Just got done with orientation! First we were herded into several lines to make check-in a little less crazy, then given recruitment t-shirts that are super cute. They have bows with each sorority's letters written underneath, and all the patterns are different but match (which is probably super profound and symbolic:p) Then we were again herded into the auditorium while the Pi Chis loudly cheered and chanted the sorority chants. Some of the chants referenced Clemson, which I thought was pretty cool, and the Pi Chis had also made their own song to the tune of that new Miley Cyrus song.

Next the Greek Life staff and Panhellenic Council introduced themselves before the Pi Chis performed a few skits with recruitment tips; how to dress, the five Bs to avoid talking about, being on time, etc. A lot of stuff I already knew from Greekchat (you ladies have awesome advice!), but I was still really happy that the information was given to every girl going through recruitment. My favorite line was about the Bible of the five Bs; "You can talk about the religious groups you're involved in, but remember that recruitment is not the place to convert". I also learned that the sororities expect new members this year to move into the sorority housing next year. I expected to live on the floor anyways but since some floors only hold 50 girls and quota will probably be over 64 this year I don't know if I'll be able to. We were also told that we'd receive our invitations for the next rounds at 6:15 AM in a parking lot because some girls in my group are off-campus, which is not super awesome but I will make do:)

We also got booklets to write our feelings about each group after each round. The theme of recruitment this year seems to be values; we were really encouraged to write down our own values and make sure that the sororities' values line up with our own, which I really liked. My top three values were friendship, kindness, and passion, so I really hope I find a group with those qualities that likes me!

After we split into Pi Chi groups my Pi Chi gave us all index cards and had us fill out our personal information. I felt bad for the girls who were asking if aunts qualified as legacies because I figured that they would know if their aunt qualified as a legacy if said aunt had filled out a rec and legacy form! There were 62 Pi Chis and I only knew for sure which sorority one of them was in (she's a Scorpio from one of my Spanish classes last year). I think I might have figured out which group my Pi Chi belongs to, but I'm keeping that to myself until Bid Day because I'm not sure if I'm right and I don't want to spoil it for the other 17 girls in my group.

On the whole, I am super excited for tomorrow!

seisanne 08-21-2013 11:34 PM

Sounds like lots of fun! Excited to hear more :)

sigmagirl2000 08-22-2013 07:38 AM

Keep up the great attitude (and great story)!

Jill1228 08-22-2013 08:41 AM

Rooting for Capricorn. Only because I am one :D

FSUZeta 08-22-2013 08:43 AM

I almost did a spit take when I read "herded". It IS a lot like herding, or at least now I imagine how one would herd. Hope you have a good day.

MaryPoppins 08-22-2013 11:12 AM

Best wishes!

amIblue? 08-22-2013 11:18 AM

I heart your story! Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

MaggieNolia 08-22-2013 11:30 AM

Wait, so what are the five Bs to avoid? Bible... boys? Um... Bozo the Clown? I'm drawing a blank. (That's a B!)

Best of luck, by the way!!!!!!

WCsweet<3 08-22-2013 11:42 AM

Bible, Boys, Bank, Booze, (the fifth one tends to change a bit, it often involves either politics or other illegal drugs. So Bush, 'Bama or Bud)

Sciencewoman 08-22-2013 12:56 PM

Can't wait to hear how your first day went! :) I love reading your story, because I feel like we already know you!

'Ballot' is a simpler politics 'B' - you don't have to change it every four years!

First Half of Round One!!

Y'all are too nice to me with all this encouragement! I'm grinning from ear to ear as I type this out:D Anyways, after a brief and scary thunderstorm today I walked over to the basketball coliseum where Round 1 is held. There were a lot of conflicts with classes because while the actual recruitment started at 5:30 we were supposed to meet our Pi Chis at 3:30, which cut into a lot of class time. Some actives of Cancer that were in my Pilates class today were discussing with each other how they were going to be late for roll call because they had class too.

We met in the seats in front of the sorority we were going to first and waited to be lined up, then got lined up, and then got counted several times to make sure we were all there. It was more of the herding thing except it was herding under the pressure of time constraints. I half wanted to clip my nametag to my ear and get it over with already:p Then we got cheered and chanted and shouted and clapped at until we finally went to each sorority!

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted our conversation topics were my state, my major, and the activities I was involved in this year and last year because LORD JEEBUS that was a lot of what I talked about. Not that I minded it in the slightest but I just won't write it down every time:)

First up was Taurus. My rec for this group was from the local alumni association. I knew a few Taurus (Tauruses? Taurii? Excuse my totally making up plural nouns as I go along here) girls from last year, but I was met by a super-adorable girl who was also a sophomore. We were both equally nervous about recruitment which made us feel a little more relaxed since we could admit it to each other. The girls who bumped her were sweet and friendly, and I felt like I could joke around and be myself around them. I wrote in my recruitment notes that I would LOVE to go back and I truly would!

We had a short break where we could gather ourselves before going off to our next group, Cancer! My rec here was from one of the guidance counselors at my high school that I found through the local alumni association. I was joking around and having a good time talking to these girls, and I felt like I really fit in here. We didn't spend all the time talking about the aforementioned topics but instead got to know each other a little better. I wrote in my notes here that I wish I could have stayed longer. I liked them just as much as I liked Taurus.

Next up was Scorpio! My rec here was also from a local alumni association (it is a blessing and a curse that New England states are so small you sometimes can and have to go to different states to find alumni). I didn't know the girl I was paired with but I was super excited when a girl I knew from my Spanish class but had never talked to came over and said hi to me! We momentarily bonded over how much we had hated the professor and I was touched that she had remembered who I was because I was genuinely not expecting it:) I wrote that they seemed like they really wanted to get to know me which made me feel good about them. At this point I was starting to worry that it would be impossible for me to rank the sororities tomorrow because I loved them all so much, which is the best problem to have!

After another break we went to see Sagittarius! Sagittarius is my legacy chapter through my mother and my best friend is also one, so the national organization is very near and dear to my heart. I could tell that they knew I was a legacy because the president, vice president of recruitment and someone else with a fancy title stopped by to introduce themselves to me, which made me feel important:) I didn't make quite as much of a connection with these girls as I did with the first three groups, but I still really liked them and would like to return to them next round.

Directly after Sagittarius was Aries. My rec was from a family friend who is a Clemson Aries. I knew the Aries I was paired with, but I didn't realize it at first. She was from the same Spanish class that the Scorpio was although I didn't talk to either of them during that class. By the time I had figured out that I knew the Aries it was too late to mention it, and she didn't seem to recognize me when we talked:/ Even still, I enjoyed myself here and would love to return if given the opportunity.

After our final break of the night during which my friend and I convinced a guy friend of ours to deliver us Moe's we got to our last party: Capricorn! My rec here was from a friend of a friend. I had the best conversations of the night here:) Two of my rushers were Red Sox fans, which I was wicked excited about! They had clearly done their homework about what my interests were. They were also really funny in general and made me feel super comfortable to be there. The president stopped by and said hello which made me feel like the coolest of the cool kids:cool:. I saw myself in these girls as well and really hope to see them in Round 2.

Tomorrow I have the next six groups and then I officially rank them! So never fear if your sign is not here, because I will let y'all know how it goes tomorrow. Apologies if I over-used the emoticons but I am seriously this excited about recruitment! I have loved every minute of it so far and cannot wait to go back.

IF I had to rank them tonight (but I don't! Ha! And I liked all of them! Double ha!):
Capricorn
Taurus
Cancer
Scorpio
Sagittarius
Aries

ETA: I don't remember exactly what the fifth B was but I definitely knew to avoid all of them!

sigmagirl2000 08-23-2013 06:47 AM

yay! glad to hear its going so well. Keep up the positive attitude and I'm sure you'll find a fabulous home!

ps - go Red Sox!

MaryPoppins 08-23-2013 09:17 AM

Excited for you clemsongirl! Keep it up!

clemsongirl 08-24-2013 12:52 AM

Round One Part Two

Hey all! I have to be up at 6 AM to get my schedule tomorrow so I'm going to try to get this done quickly but I had the most lovely time tonight!

First was Aquarius! I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this sorority because I had gone to a COB event for them last semester and felt somewhat awkward and uncomfortable then, but I actually really enjoyed myself this time. I had a really funny conversation with one of the actives about building a wave pool so that we could have the ocean near campus. I didn't love them, but I certainly liked them.

The Virgos seemed like really nice girls. We weren't allowed to take our recruitment notes with us and I forgot to take a picture of my notes from this group, so I don't remember a whole ton, but I definitely had a good time. I think I met another girl who played the same high school sport as me, which was really cool. Overall, I wanted to get to know the Virgos a little better before I passed judgement on them.

Next was Gemini! I really enjoyed myself here; we totally got past the basic conversation questions and I liked the girls I talked with. The president came over and introduced herself to me at one point, and while I don't know if that means anything I thought it was pretty cool. I wrote in my notes that I would LOVE to go back!

After Gemini we went to Libra. I enjoyed talking about sisterhood and why I was interested in a sorority with some of the Libras, and I felt like each rusher made a different personal connection with me. I could really see myself there.

I had several friends in the Leos that I visited next-one girl was from my state and remembered me from when we met at the out-of-state connections group last year, which was super cool. I also got to talk with girls from Seattle and a different state in New England. One girl (I feel bad that I don't remember which one!) told me about an academic program the Leos have to support girls who have the same major, which really impressed me. I didn't feel the same spark that I did with some of the other groups, but I would still be really happy to go back here.

The last group of the night was Pisces. I was thrilled with how much I liked them! A girl with family from MY HOMETOWN came up to me because she saw my nametag and told me that she hadn't seen anyone from where I came from before, so I was super excited! She said that her entire family had gone to the local state school except for her, which I could relate with since most of my friends go to the same school. I had some great conversations with this group and really wanted to go back here.

After all the parties our Pi Chi tried to get on the internet to submit our rankings, but the wifi was so bad we had to sit outside on the steps of the stadium while she put them in because it was the only place she could get a signal. I listed:

Capricorn
Pisces
Libra
Scorpio
Cancer
Taurus
Gemini
Sagittarius
Virgo

1. Leo
2. Aquarius
3. Aries

I had a tough time deciding whether to put Virgo or Leo in my first backup spot, and I ended up switching Aquarius and Aries at the last second, but overall I felt really good about the past two nights. I'll let y'all know tomorrow morning where I'm going back to! Wish me luck!

clemsongirl 08-24-2013 07:20 AM

Round Two Schedule

My Pi Chi didn't end up getting us our schedules until 7 AM so here's mine (out of a maximum nine parties)!

Gemini
Aquarius
Leo
Sagittarius
Capricorn
Cancer
Taurus

My good friend in my Pi Chi group got asked back to similar ones as me:

Aquarius
Leo
Sagittarius
Capricorn
Cancer
Pisces

I'm super happy with my schedule and so is my friend. Parties start at 10 AM so I have to get ready!

PKTKKG 08-24-2013 07:35 AM

Really enjoying your story!!! You have a great outlook - keep that open mind and enjoy today!!

Tulip86 08-24-2013 07:55 AM

Go Capricorn!

Sciencewoman 08-24-2013 09:25 AM

I hope you have a great day!
