Daughter Rushing at Mizzou...
Hi everyone,
My daughter will be rushing at Mizzou this Fall. No Alpha Xi Delta house there:(, but I hear that there are lots of great options. I hear that recs are a necessity. We are pretty much out of the Missouri loop- from Nor Cal...if this going to be tougher on her being from Cali? Thanks! |
You absolutely need recs. Have you gotten any lined up?
|
Thx. She has nine of the fifteen lined up. Still searching... It was so different at SDSU- maaaannny years ago...:)
|
AZDBeachgirl,
I went to SDSU many many years ago as well. I was there from 1986 to 1989. I love reading Greekchat and the information given is very useful. Hopefully you will get the information you are seeking. Good luck to your daughter. |
What all organizations do you still need recs for?
|
We are still working on the following:
Alpha Phi Chi Omega Gamma Phi Beta Kappa Delta Kappa Kappa Gamma Sigma Sigma Sigma There are so many houses at Mizzou, it's hard to get them all covered. |

Not sure where in California you're at, but if you go to Alpha Phi's official webpage, there is a listing of all the alumnae chapters in the state. If they have a webpage or Facebook page, there will be a link. You might be able to find someone nearby.
Good luck to your daughter! |
There's also a thriving Alumnae Panhellenic in SD that may be able to help you get recs for SOME of the ones you're missing. Their rec page is here: http://www.sdaph.org/contacts/index.html
If SD's APH doesn't have reps for all of them, there is actually a SC Council of Alumnae Panhellenics (a group representing ALL of the APHs in So Cal.) They help with recs, too. Their rec info page is here: http://www.sccap.info/Recruitment_Information.html (They represent a number of APHs, so they probably have access to alumnae from EVERY group you need.) Note: Anytime you're working with an APH to help get recs, your daughter will need to provide them with some info about her. Those sites let you know the info they'll need and when they need it. Sidenote: I am a firm believer in SD being the greatest place on the planet. I'm originally from there (moved to OH in middle school) and my dad still lives there (15 minutes from PB.) Good luck! |
Thank you Missouri Ivy!

Thanks for the help KSUViolet06. Love SD, especially La Jolla. My fav place is the beach in LJ shores...

Do the best that you can in terms of recs - you still have time, do not panic, and tell your daughter to enjoy herself. I bet it'll all go great.
Miss CA; miss Santa Barbara, and miss the Pacific Ocean. San Diego is lovely, we Zonies love it there, in the summer most especially. ETA, just saw your location, I know where you're located (general vicinity) and it's definitely not as populated as SoCal. |
Actually, I meant there might be a NC Council of Alumnae Panhellenic that I could contact...
|
For Northern:
Sacramento Tulare County South Bay Diablo Valley There is one in San Mateo and Fresno but I couldn't find a webpage. Some of these are facebook pages, but I couldn't find anything better. I'd send a message asking for contact. |
I can't imagine you can throw a rock ANYWHERE in California without hitting an Alpha Phi. You just need to widen your search there.
|
Actually, DS, in that part of NorCA (Sierra Nevada foothills is my guess), the pickings ARE going to be slim. It's not like SoCA at all, population is way more spread out and not wall-to-wall people like the LA/Orange County/San Diego metroplex.

I know that this is out of my lane, but, maybe I have some information:
There are Reno area Alumnae chapters for several of the sororities on her "needs recs" list, since I suspect she's rather close geographically to here too. So, maybe checking with them can also be an option. Hope this helps. :-) |
Pet peeve and OP may need to be aware... NO ONE who is a native Califorian says Cali...just like it is not Frisco...
If OP is in Northern California, might look into Santa Clara Valley. Last I knew they were active. It's as close as the South Bay, almost. I live in Texas now, but I qualify as a 4th generation Native Daughter of the Golden West... |

Giving any advice for a group that you do not belong to is never the right thing to do. |
Sorry.....I knew that I shouldn't have said a word. :-(
|
I have to agree with LaneSig on this one. It's not like misscherrypie suggested she contact an Alumnae Panhellenic in Georgia or New York, Reno, NV is relatively close. Obviously it makes sense to go with the nearest Alumnae Panhellenic to where the OP lives but this wasn't the most unsound advice in the world. I am pretty sure the OP will choose an Alumnae Panhellenic nearest to where she lives and go from there. Good luck!

IMPRESSED! My mother was born in the City and she regarded with disdain anyone who said "Frisco" or wore shorts in the City in the summer. As for contacting individual Alumnae Chapters in Reno, I am with Old_Row on this one. You run the risk of stubbing your own toe, big time, if you approach individual sorority alumnae chapters with "hello, I need a rec". That's why you go through the "mother group" which is the Alumnae Panhellenic. Not to mention that geographically, Reno can be a far piece from an hour from Tahoe on the California side. The Donner Party kind of learned that geography lesson the hard way. Would go for Sacramento area. |
The "where to go to get recs" hierarchy goes like this:
1. Personal connections (friends, family, teachers, people you know in real life.) 2. Alumnae Panhellenic (not as personal, but will get you what you need.) 3. Individual sorority alumnae chapters (they don't exist for rec purposes, so they're kind of a last resort.) |

Thank you all for being so helpful...I guess this is what sisterhood is all about, regardless of house:)
|
You & your daughter have probably already tried this, but contact her high school teachers to see if they were in a sorority in college, or if they know any Greek alumnae. It may be Six Degrees of Separation.
|
I wish I had jumped in on this earlier. I concur that the Sacramento area group is probably the closest to the Sierra foothills, but Reno is not TOO far either. Looking at the recs you are still trying to get, I am SURE there are a ton of Gamma Phi/A Phi/Kappa/Chi O alumnae in the Sac area (given the close-by chapters at UC Davis, Sac State, and the Bay Area schools). Given the number of folks I have know who have parents who have retired to the Sierra foothills (beautiful area, BTW), you probably have some rec sources close by.

There are regional differences. I have gotten rec requests as president of our local alumnae chapter, and I am not at all offended by this. I've even gotten a referral for a PNM who called our IH in desperation. I have no issue with helping these women, because our local Panhellenic Alumnae Chapter has no interest, none, nada, zip, in being involved in rec writing. We've discussed it...no interest. Sometimes alumnae make a FB post on the APH page about trying to help a PNM find someone to write a rec for a missing group...no response. All the recs I've written have been for women attending school in a southern state.
Recs just aren't big around here, and there is little acknowledgement of the worth of a rec written by someone who doesn't personally know the PNM. The chapter I advise gets less than a handful each year. |

So when I know a great girl who needs recs., I network among my friends who are members of other sororities and we usually can cover all the recs. a girl needs. I have even helped PNMs going to colleges where there is not a ZTA chapter. As we often say, if you can find one sorority woman, she may know others. It is all about networking. |
