False Recruitment Info on Class Facebook Pages

So a mom of a fall SEC PNM tells me that false rush information is being given out in those Class of 2017 Facebook groups. Girls will tell other PNMs (along with announcing which bids they will and won't accept) that they don't need recs, for instance.

Often they're telling this to girls from faraway sections of the country and these girls may well be behind the eight ball in recruitment since they're relatively unknown to the members. Another thought is that they might be trying to purposely sabotage other PNMs. Should school Panhellenics be notified?

Your thoughts?

Flag the group for deletion?

clemsongirl 07-05-2013 10:34 PM

I'm surprised the mods haven't deleted the posts/banned repeat offenders. I can only speak for the Clemson groups but I'm a member of all the Class of 2017 ones that I know of and our mods are really on the ball as far as deleting spam or offering helpful advice.

Flag the group for deletion, and while you're at it, join it and refute every post by saying "This is untrue information. For the correct information regarding recruitment, contact the SECSchoolInQuestion Greek Life office."

Can you link to one of these? I just did a quick search and couldn't find one.

carnation 07-06-2013 11:09 AM

I don't know what kinds of privacy settings they have but I'll try to have the people who contacted me to put one here. The sabotage aspect really, really bothers me.

I just found the ones for UGA and Bama (the only 2 I searched for) by simply typing the school name followed by 2017. Most of these are official from the school, but of course anyone can post anything within them. Therefore, I don't think the group can be deleted but maybe a mod could be notified about the inappropriate posts?

I love the idea of joining and refuting the info with a better link.

ETA: my very quick perusal of the comments didn't yield anything like what Carnation referred to, but did turn up this gem:

Howdy y'all. I'm Chris and I hail from the great state of Texas. I'm a Longhorns fan at heart but I guess since I'm going to Georgia, I can try to become a Tiger. Message me if you wanna have a good time. My hobbies include eating beef jerky, herding cattle, packing fat lips, and being Republican. Go Georgia Tigers! (and Longhorns) lol peace love and applesauce cowboys!!

Well I think maybe you should see it yourself to confirm it"s really happening or isn't an exaggeration before you take it to the Internet. That's what I've been taught to do before I start worrying about something someone has just told me.

carnation 07-06-2013 11:39 AM

I don't need to see these debacles myself, I've had enough SEC moms and PNMs who don't know each other quote exactly the same people and phrases to feel confident that they're there. One mom was happy to report that several threads had been removed from one group this morning.

Old_Row 07-06-2013 12:10 PM

But you are speculating on why some people might be doing something you haven't seen and by putting it here it makes all sorority members and PNMs at all SEC schools look bad. I just think this stuff should not be spread like gossip and should be handled privately.

Georgia Tigers, huh?!

These schools are definitely not my area, but even I caught that.

The ones who are giving false advice aren't necessarily the ones who are broadcasting their preferences. The latter group, especially if they've been advised how idiotic this is but continue to do it, will shoot themselves in the foot.

It's the ones who are giving bad advice, especially if they're doing it on purpose to hurt other PNMs, who are the most disturbing.

Surely these aren't the women who will comprise the SEC Panhellenic system.

Ho, ho, ho. They might already be PART of the Panhellenic system.

Thanks Blondie, I thought we were talking about groups for rush only, not for the whole class.

carnation 07-06-2013 08:24 PM

Supposedly the advice-givers are PNMs themselves.

33girl 07-06-2013 08:28 PM

The key word is supposedly. If I've learned anything from MTV's Catfish, it is that people will do crazy ass shit on the intrawebs if they think they can get away with it.

greekdee 07-06-2013 10:13 PM

A couple of years ago, the daughter of someone I know had her named trashed on "that" Greek Life website that we don't mention here. That was intentional attempted sabotage, and while I don't think it represents the majority of PNMs at all, mean girls are out there. Give them an anonymous platform like that site, and they could feel like they have carte blanche to be as verbally vicious as they want to.

Some PNMs are just misinformed, like those who think sororities will find recs for them. They can easily get this idea from their school's own Panhellenic website. Many do say the responsibility of recs is ultimately that of the sororities, but some PNMs don't realize sororities might not have time or be able to find recs for them, and that some schools use "no recs" as part of their process for managing the numbers in these huge recruitments. Also, If you Google "sorority rush" or "rush advice" or anything along those lines, all kinds of info pops up. PNMs and parents are pulling misinformation from a variety of sources, including "that" site.

Whether it's obvious or suspected sabotage, or just people being misinformed, bad info is getting out there. I think letting the school's Greek Life office or Panhellenic know is a good idea.

I'm not doubting you here, but I'm wondering why a sorority woman would go on a school's incoming freshman group and give out false info to PNMs. I can see what PNMs think they stand to gain by misinforming their "competition", or even an admant anti-greek trying to screw over people going through recruitment (although how they would know so much about the process or go through the trouble to find out about it if they hate it so much is beyond me), but I honestly can't see why an active sorority member would give out false info in a group with a thousand or so members. In my experience, greeks are usually very helpful to PNMs.

It's happened again this year on "that" site. Two girls were called out by name on an SEC school's section. Their escapades were spelled out and the girls were told not to even bother with recruitment. It was pretty vicious. I don't see what purpose it would serve for an active to have posted that, so I figured it was another PNM trying to exact a little revenge.
