Snowing in Atlanta!

Just wanted to say, "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!!!!!!" Down here in Atlanta, we don't get much snow but today I woke up to see the flurries just starting and now it's finally beginning to stick. Yay! :) :D

BrownEyedGirl 01-02-2002 11:34 AM

Yay!! :D Snow is on its way to us in Columbia too. :) I'm so excited!!

KarenC725 01-02-2002 11:43 AM

I'm happy to report that it is not snowing here in Detroit. It's damn cold though. I miss summer already. I'd be very content if we didn't get any more snow this winter.

AOPiLaLa 01-02-2002 11:43 AM

Okay, glad I am not the only one who gets excited about the snow. Now, where is my hot boy to snuggle with? There is NOTHING better than a cold snowy night, college football, and a warm, cute boy : )

I just talked to my boyfriend. We're having dinner in front of his fireplace tonight! :)

carnation 01-02-2002 12:18 PM

Yea!!! We're getting out the sleds, mittens, etc. Look at those flakes!!!

KSigkid 01-02-2002 12:20 PM

Weird...there's snow in Atlanta, and up here in Connecticut, there hasn't been any snow to speak of (we got some in Boston when I was at school, but nothing on break so far)

Collin

AOPiLaLa 01-02-2002 12:48 PM

NO FAIR, DZROSE!! But then again, I don't even have the fireplace, let alone the cute boy!! Oh well

The1calledTKE 01-02-2002 12:49 PM

Weather reports say that Macon, which is south of Atlanta, will probably get twice the amount of snow that Atlanta gets. Go figure! Now I'm wishing that I was still living in my hometown. At least for this week! :D

KarenC725 01-02-2002 03:13 PM

Well, I don't have the snow but I have the amazing and cute boy and his space heater! His room is the coldest in the house and we are watching the Maryland/Florida game tonight. Rooting for different teams but it should be fun.

ladybug1116 01-02-2002 03:18 PM

It's snowing here in Auburn too. We've gotten a little more than 3 inches so far :) I know this is nothing to those of you in the north but I love it. It's so pretty :)

lifesaver 01-02-2002 05:12 PM

Read what was in the paper here. You northerners will laugh...

Snow drops by S.A. area, but doesn't stick around
By Macarena Hernandez
San Antonio Express-News

Web Posted : 01/02/2002 12:00 AM

Well, it happened. Snow in San Antonio on New Year's Day.

It wasn't enough to stick to the ground, but those definitely were snowflakes sticking to hats and hair across the Northwest Side.

"It looked like bits of white floating in the air. It was flurries," said Diana Hooks, a clerk at the Texaco at Ingram and Northwest Loop 410. "It wasn't anything substantial. Nothing is really sticking. It melted before it hit the ground."

But there was some excitement.

"One guy watched it for about five minutes," Hooks said. "He got gas and went and sat in his car and watched for a while. He was so enthralled. He was really excited. I myself don't get so excited because I have to drive."

Farther north, in Boerne, Gary Groth and his family saw a thin layer — thick by South Texas standards, he said — accumulating on the windshield wipers of his white Explorer, on the top of his glass patio table and also piling up on the branches of the bushes outside his house.

"If you don't look at the ground, you swear you are in winter wonderland. It is coming down like you would want it to be for a white Christmas. It is really, really beautiful." Groth said. "My son just came down and looked out the window and said, 'Wow.'"

Snow flurries also were reported around Interstate 10 and Camp Bullis, but there was no major accumulation....

Close to 70 degrees in Los Angeles and supposed to get warmer as the week wears on! Don't be too jealous it is gloomy and threatening rain... :)

volgirl2376 01-02-2002 05:21 PM

ok heres an idea. i live in knoxville tn. i love snow. so for everyone in ga ---can you do me a favor? Do a dance, stand in the yard and blow upwards...whatever - make it the snow come here!!!

AGDLynn 01-02-2002 06:54 PM

Hubby came to pick me up from work at 3:15 cause my car is in the shop. He said he saw this person from behind, but he/she looked a little wierd. As he passed, he noticed it was a girl walking down the road with her mouth open, trying to catch snow in her mouth...I'd be more worried about the autos on my body!:D

Sisterplum 01-02-2002 06:59 PM

Ooooh, I am so jealous!!! Snow in Atlanta!:( I really miss snow this time of year (it didn't feel at all like Christmas this year...no snow in Dallas!)

Here in Tallahasssee (north Florida) it's just been raining all day....but I was hoping for some snow...nothing yet!:(:(

alphachiohmy 01-02-2002 07:02 PM

I hate all of you in warm climates!

70 degrees????????????? No Fair!!! (Rhonda is throwing a tantrum on the floor kicking her hands and feet in the air and screaming ... just kidding)

I am glad all of you are liking the snow. I, however, hate cold. I hate cold with a passion, which is why I would give anything to be back in Arizona or Southern California. Its been highs in the 20s and lows in the teens. We had a few flurries but no pretty snow ( I do like snow - from inside a warm house. I just really hate the cold - anything below 40 degrees irks me)

I move to Chicago in a week, and I think I am gonna go nuts. It snows more and is colder than St. Louis.

Oh summer, where are you? Come back please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:(

AlphaGam1019 01-02-2002 07:16 PM

About 3 weeks ago in Valdosta, GA (like 20 miles from the Fla border) -- it must have been about 75 degrees! now it's just cold, rainy and miserable!

Snow is dangerous in Atlanta-- most don't know how to drive in it!

prospectiverushee 01-02-2002 08:19 PM

Snow in Dallas

It snowed for a hot minute today in my neck of the woods(North Dallas) It wasn't enough to stick, just some flurries. It was however cold enough for me to break down and buy some much needed gloves. Now all I need is a hat and a dress coat and I'll be set. (Of course by the time I find these items, the weather will be back in the 70's:rolleyes:

Hey, it sucks living IN Florida! I'm just glad the temp has fallen into the 50's...everyone can feel free to send the snow down here!

Unregistered- 01-02-2002 11:06 PM

No snow in Hawaii...but last night the temp dropped to almost 60, and that's considered cold over here!

I stayed over at my new sweetie's house last night (I forgot to mention that I have a new sweetie!), and he lives in a very cold part of the island. It was fun to have someone to snuggle with this morning... We turned on the news and sure enough...it's snowing in Atlanta. I couldn't help but think of you guys!

tcsparky 01-02-2002 11:50 PM

It came North

The snow has now arrived in the Charlotte Metro area. According to the radio, we are expecting 6 inches by tomorrow morning, with another 6 by tomorrow night. The roads are at a standstill, there is no milk, bread, or eggs in any store in the tri-county area (why does everyone make French toast when it snows?) and everything is shut. I wish my grandma was here, she makes great snow ice cream.

aephi alum 01-02-2002 11:53 PM

No snow here in CT - but we had some snow a couple of weeks ago - first snow of the season, and it stuck! Very wet snow... but it melted the next day.

The trouble with snow in the south (south = below the Mason-Dixon line) is that no one knows how to drive in it - AlphaGam1019 is right on that one. A couple of winters ago I was down in Virginia on business, and a couple of inches of snow fell... *everything* shut down. Schools were closed, businesses were closed (except mine, of course :( ), I-66 was moving at 15mph, I'm on the highway and I'm thinking, come *on* people, it's a *flurry*... But if you're not used to driving in snow, it is best to be cautious.

Sisterplum 01-03-2002 12:37 AM

aephi, I couldn't agree more!!!!! When I lived in Dallas they had a "snowstorm" one day. I wake up to see barely anything and find out schools were closed, Art got sent home from work....and what was worse....when we went out for dinner that night, we must have passed like 10 accidents in a 5 mile stretch! These people really didn't know how to drive....they couldn't believe we went out driving in the "terrible weather"....well, that is until we told them we're Canadians and this is nothing!!!
You can see a pic of the "snowstorm" on my Texas page of my website: http://bialowas2001.tripod.com/texas/texas.html .... it's on the bottom of the page!:)

discrete1 01-03-2002 12:58 AM

Let is snow!!!!

It is snowing in Virginia as well. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. I need another full day of rest before I see my students in 2k2.

juniorgrrl 01-03-2002 01:46 AM

It was supposed to snow here (Mandeville, LA) yesterday. But it didn't :(

It got nasty and sleety and way too dangerous for me to make the trek to my boyfriend's house to watch the sugar bowl :(

But Baton Rouge got about an inch. Heard it was tons of fun :)

Dianne 01-03-2002 02:19 AM

It is now 1:15 on Thursday morning here in the winter wonderland of Columbia, SC (btw, what's up Anne?). It's been snowing steady since 11 a.m. and now we have almost 3 inches, which is unheard of here! It's supposed to go into tomorrow night, and we may get more than 8 inches total. I just hope the electricity doesn't go out b/c I hate the cold. I was in Cincinnati for New Years and joked about how I hadn't seen snow fall out of the sky in 2 years (the last time was Jan 2000 in Charleston, and it caused such a frenzy!). Yeah, so I leave the Great White North, hoping for some warmth and I get this. I am not happy!! My mom won't let me drive anywhere! All I can think about is how mid-finals it got so warm at school that we all almost went to the beach.....How many days til summer?

AOPiLaLa 01-03-2002 10:43 AM

So, why is it that my "lived in FL my whole life and has no idea how to drive in snow" ass is in my office at 9am when the rest of my NORTHERN BORN fellow employee's are calling in left and right with excuses on why they can't make it in. I had to DIG my car out this morning, go down a lot of very scary hills, fishtail pulling into my office parking lot, AND take about an hour for a 20 minute drive, yet I am here. ARGH--I am SOOOOOOOOOO MAD right now. All is know is that I am LEAVING at 3:30 today, before the roads get icy and it starts to get dark. But I am still really mad!!!

Sisterplum 01-03-2002 03:36 PM

AOPiLala,
Where in Florida are you?! Y'all actually have snow?! :( I want snow! I know, how weird does that sound....I live in Florida now, but I want snow. I guess I just miss not seeing it this year at all!:)

AOPiLaLa 01-03-2002 04:05 PM

VERA--oops, I am not in FL. I am in Atlanta but I lived in FL my whole life and I never really had to drive in snow there, yet I made it in this morning BEFORE any of my northern born co-workers. That was why I was mad! Sorry for the mistake!

Aephi alum,

OMG!!! You should have been here in Dallas right before Thanksgiving. I was born in Michigan so I'm use to driving on ice and snow. I swear these people here think that ice on the ground means go 65 miles an hour(and this is just on the surface streets not the highways) Even when it rains here and the ground is really slick from all the oil and whatnot, these people still DO NOT SLOW DOWN!!! Guess the traffic laws are differnet here in Texas then in other parts of the country:p

BrownEyedGirl 01-03-2002 05:06 PM

Y'all, we haven't had this much snow in SC as long as I can remember, and the entire city has SHUT DOWN! I'm serious - banks (not that I'm complaining since I work at one over breaks), businesses, day cares, churches, stores, all just close! People can't drive, can't function! I'm glad to have the day off, don't get me wrong, and it's *gorgeous* outside, but our northern neighbors must be laughing at us. The governor just called in the National Guard for help! Too bad it wasn't a white Christmas, though!

SparkliiQTMTSU 01-03-2002 05:10 PM

man I want some snow.....NO FAIR!!!lol I think that me and Sarah need to get out there and do a little snow dance to make it snow here in TN!! :)

While I understand your frustration, let me add in another point of view. I live in Atlanta and am at work right now. I am originally from Illinois so I have a lot of experience driving in snow, on ice, etc. However, I don't like to drive when it snows or is icy here in Atlanta because this city is not equipped like up north. First of all, from what I've heard there are only about 30 salt trucks here. I mean 30  ?!! And they don't get out to clear the roads nearly as quick as up north. Second, I feel like a lot of people here do not know how to drive in these conditions. I've seen people going 60mph on these roads that aren't salted or clear. I've seen tons of wrecks already involving 4 or more cars each and seen tons of people fishtailing. Matter of fact, a guy I work with here (from FL) said he drove 65mph into the office today. Why   ?!! I honestly do not feel comfortable driving in these conditions here. Back home we drive in these conditions or worse for months on end every year without near as many wrecks as there has been last night and today.

Just a Northerner's point of view ;)!!

mmcat 01-03-2002 06:53 PM

i beat the snow

i was coming back from a cruise in the western caribbean through atlanta sunday and just missed the snow. it was just wicked cold. it even tried to snow in el paso -- a rare attempt.

:) :D :p

bruinaphi 01-03-2002 07:05 PM

I am so jealous of all of your snow in the south. It poured rain here in Los Angeles last night but today it has warmed up to about 60 degrees (and I'm pretty close to the beach). By Sunday we are supposed to be back up in the 70's. It's nice having warm weather and all, but I'd give anything for a little snow!

Tom Earp 01-03-2002 07:10 PM

Here is a GC Thread that is insane, inane, and nuts! :p

I had a room mate in my first College who was from Panama and it snowed like crazy in N W Mo. We lived in the Basement of the Dorm and this moron goes out in his Boxers to romp in the snow!

well he got pemoniua!

I live In Kansas and We Have had NO Snow so I cannot use my snow blower. Damn I am Sad:( Reason I got the blower was so I could get out of my driveway!

Feel grateful you dont have snow!!!!!!:D I damn sure do not want to shuffle off to Buffalo;)

You can always go on a vacation and see snow!:)

I remember when a bunch of us Shi Patrollers left KC to go skiing in Colo. We all wore shorts and froze our thingys off He and Shes combined! What a hoot in a baby blue reconverted school bus!:)

well it ended up that all of us ended up with injurys and when we go back to KC it was shorts time again!:D

Greatest dream, after meeting Rhys Morgan in England was living in New Zeland like he did!

Lived on the beach and drove two Hrs to the Mountains to ski! Go I thought that had to be the place in the world to live!

Shovelling sucks!!!!! Warm is wonderful! Go Visit Winter Wonder Land , Dont live there!!!!!!!!

SSS1365 01-04-2002 11:32 AM

We got 7 inches of snow here the night before last. I'm still working at the college over winter break since I live so close, but they closed yesterday. They opened on time today. So I went outside this morning at 7:30 to unbury my car, which took me 15 minutes. Then when I tried to put it in reverse so I could get out of my driveway, all I did was burn rubber. My mom ended up having to take me to work (she has the week off). I like snow and all, but not when I have to be somewhere and I don't have 4-wheel drive :(

Of course, I know all of you who are used to getting much more snow than this probably laugh at us in the south when we panic over a few inches... ;)

dzrose93 01-04-2002 11:50 AM

Snow days!

Our office was closed yesterday due to the snow, so I got to curl up in front of the fire all day and watch DVDs with my boyfriend. :) We got about 5 inches in our part of Atlanta.

I went outside to clear the snow off of my bf's bird feeder. When I filled it up with fresh birdseed, we had a field day watching all the birds fly in. We had red-headed woodpeckers, cardinals, bluejays, wrens, etc. all fighting for a spot on the feeder. Poor birds! They were so confused. They probably thought they'd flown far enough south for the winter until this week! :D
