Hair and Humidity

I will be traveling to Atlanta on Wednesday and wondering if any one can give me advice on how to control my hair in the humidity. I have never been to a place where there is that much humidity.

Xidelt 06-10-2013 01:12 PM

Try a smoothing serum. Is your naturally curly? If it is, just wear it curly. Don't waste your time trying to fight it and straighten it. I live in Atlanta and have very thick, naturally curly hair. I learned pretty quickly to just work with what I have. I swear by devacurl products.

If it is curly, consider using just a little bit more conditioner or a leave-in conditioner. I find that when my hair is really dry, it's harder to fight the humidity.

My hair is wavy (not in a good way), so I blow-dry it and straighten it every day. It's also very oily, so I can't use serums. If I do, it will look like I haven't showered in a week. My hair is A MESS in the humidity.. it frizzes and curls. I had tried every product on the block trying to find one that worked, and my search intensified after I moved to Houston this past winter.

And then I found Tresemme's Climate Control mousse. It's worked wonders for me! I suggested my mom try it, as I clearly inherited my hair from her. She text me last week when she was visiting my stepbrother in Florida to tell me how awesome the mousse is, and that for the first time ever, she hasn't worried about her hair in the humidity.

Keep in mind that the type of hair you have might determine what works best for you, but this mousse definitely worked for me.

ETA: I just re-read what I typed, and it sounds like a straight up Tresemme commercial. LOL

Tresemme, Tresemme, ooh la la!

Aveda makes a anti-humictant product that works really well, but a little goes a long way.

Thanks for the advice.

I grew up in the ATL with very thick, wavy, coarse hair - it gets huge and out of control in the summer there.

I recommend wearing it back or up if possible, and as natural as you can. Don't try to fight it.

Here in DC, it depends on the humidity--if there's rain in the forecast/it's rained in the past 24 hours, fuhgettaboutit. If it's regular humidity, a Chi straightener does wonders. My hair has never stayed so straight in my life

I wish my hair would curl in humidity. I have the opposite problem. It gets totally straight and limp. My bangs have been in my eyes all flippin day making me crazy.

Not if it "curled" the way mine does. It's horrific.

For those with natural curls, though, it can be easy to manage it, as long as you're willing to embrace the curls.

I have it, and even though I use the tiniest amount possible, it still makes me head feel greasy!

AGDee 06-10-2013 06:08 PM

Yeah, people with straight hair always want curly hair and people with curly hair always want straight hair. I think if mine was curly, I'd try to find a good stylist who could give me a cut that would work with the curl for the summers. My hair is so straight and plastered to my head when it is straight that no cut works with it. And I have to have bangs because I have the ugliest forehead on the planet.

Humidity stinks for all hair I guess!

I think of all the time I've saved in the last 25 years not fighting my hair, and I'm glad I don't straighten it that often.

In fact, I got married in Atlanta, in August. I had the stylist do my hair big and curly... why fight it?

Try using their heat protectant spray AFTER you blow dry/style! It works wonders on my hair

IrishLake 06-10-2013 08:28 PM

I have naturally curly/wavy hair (depends on how humid it is and the products I put in my hair). I put a little extra conditioner in my hair and don't rinse too much. Them I put Curls Rock serum in it and let it air dry. It usually turns out ok. I work outside though, so by the end of the day, my hair is a fright.

My stylist recently introduced me to Agadir Argan oil - it works really well for me! It tames the frizz without weighing my hair down.

Titchou 06-10-2013 09:39 PM

My sister (lives in NOLA) and I (live inBham) both have thick wavy hair. Love it or shave it. Seriously, my sister has gone with the Keratin Express treatment and loves it. I can't afford that and have tried Living Proof and every other smoother on the market and none work for me. I can blow it out, concrete it in with hairspray and go mow the grass and have ringlets by the time it's over.

agzg 06-10-2013 09:50 PM

I was going to say, if you can afford a Keratin treatment and want to wear it straight, do it. I've had a "light" Global Keratin and it made my curls much less frizzy in the summer.

OHNOITSJESS 06-10-2013 10:04 PM

I have wavy/curly hair that frizzes in humidity. Suave makes a Whipped Creme/Mousse for curly hair. I love it. :)

UofISigKap 06-10-2013 10:36 PM

I second the Argan Oil. Make sure you get the front of your hair last, and then you're good to go. I've had people ask me how my hair still looked smooth at the end of the day when everyone else's has gone frizzy.

Tips??

Loving this thread...

I have fine hair that I can get to go straight at altitude. However in places like Cape Cod, it frizzes out within an hour of straightening.

To straighten I use Tigi bedhead products and Paul Mitchell serum.

I will be traveling to South East Asia soon. I have fine hair and a lot of it that curls like crazy at humidity. I look like a blonde poodle/labridoodle.

Any tips?

I have have tried Aveda curl products but they don't do much.
I have authentic Moroccan Argan oil from Morocco. However, it weighs my hair down and makes it look greasy.

Thanks!

I have the hair that everyone who irons their hair would die for. And I hate it. It's too straight and flat and there is so much of it! Thankfully it became less thick once I got into my 30's. But I always have perms. Humidity never frizzes the curl thanks to various serums (my hair doesn't seem too picky).

My advice, especially for a short term visit is love your hair how it is naturally. I'd use a smoothing serum to keep down frizz, but seriously, it takes a teensy amount. Start at the back of your hair and work toward the front. But after the initial touch it's going to seem like there's nothing on your hands anymore. Just go with it and don't add more! Then put it in a clip, pony tail or headband and be done with it. Presuming you're not running for Miss America in Atlanta, I would shoot for not embarrassing and forgive yourself for an extra curl or wave that's out of place.

ETA/In Southeast Asia, the humidity is going to be the least of your issues. You will want to pull your hair up and off your face. You're also going to want a hat because you will likely get rain, and lots of it and umbrellas will just be annoying. I look horrible in hats, but it's worth finding one you can tolerate, and a big brim all around is better than like a baseball cap. And don't forget sunscreen and bug spray!

A Brazilian blow out will work.

Sockbun. Your hair will be out of your face/off your neck and that thing won't move all day.
