Sorority-motif jewelry!
Our family gets flooded by catalogs the week after Christmas and I had been posting notices about individual sororities' symbols on shirts, jewelry, etc. on the sororities' forums but today's catalog has too much to do that! We just got a catalog from www.naturesjewelry.com and it has tons of sororities' motifs!
For instance, they have dolphins, pansies, owls, lilies-of-the-valley, bunnies, pandas, ladybugs, butterflies, turtles, and irises. I'm sure I've left some out--anyway, I've ordered many items from them over the years and they've been really reliable. |
Lonely :-(
Any lyres?? Its lonely having a thing for a mascot instead of a cute fuzzy animal :(
I love my golden lyre, and wear it proudly...but would like to have something cute once in a while! |
Lyre or??
Last summer (2001), some of us AGDs were "tossing around the idea" (pun intended, I think, lol) of making the acorn as our symbol. The pearl is our jewel and the squirrel is our mascot..so..we in the new "GC" chapter thought about having the acorn as our symbol.
I am not familiar with AX0 so I wouldn't know what to suggest, but, hey, perhaps y'all could come up with an 'extra symbol". BTW, I found out at our Christmas party with my hubby's office that a co-worker's wife is an AX0! I think she went to school in/around Lynchburg. Good luck! ;) |
My chapter uses the lyre and angel. I think that is pretty common. But our official one is the lyre-sometimes its hard to find the right kind. It must have 3 strings, no more, no fewer. Right AXO Alum!

Are there any other sororities with difficult-to-find symbols? (And by the way, thanks for the heads up, Carnation!) :) |
Well, Phi Sigma Sigma's national symbol is the Sphinx. What can you find with a Sphinx on it? I think thats why alot of Phi Sig chapters have a local mascot. Ours are the Teddy bear and the Sunshine. Both are really easy to find. But something NICE with a SPHINX on it? Nope. We get jealous of all of the nice cute greek cups etc in our school's greek shop... and we get something with a rose on it, or just words. Now I love the rose, and I love having it as our flower, but once you have a TON of rose themed objects, it gets old! :) Bring on the Sphinxes!
(I tried to get people to see a different Sphinx, other than the one in Egypt, cos in the fourth Harry Potter book, theres a 'girl' sphinx... its cute!) |
oh ma lord. as an alpha gam i used to whine 'bout finding cute squirrel stuff but then i realized what some other chapters had as mascots. at least when we go to have t-shirts made you can make a squirrel look "cute". i mean, dang, when is the last time you saw a "cute" key (KKG) or a "happy" anchor (DG). i'm definetely feeling it for the sphinx's and three bowed lyre's out there. keep looking though.
ps. i will admit ya'll have really beautiful pins. marissa |
Getting it right...
Well, our crest is a Phoenix (a large mythical bird) rising from the flames, and some of the national companies that made screen-print crests, must have used eagles instead. Basically it looked like an eagle with its butt on fire! Plus, the sections underneath the crest were often wrong - there are supposed to be a specific number, it's not random.
Ours (unofficial) are Raggedy Ann, and we used to have turtles but now it's ladybugs. I preferred the turtles cause some of the ladybugs out there can look like cockroaches! |
Lol on the cockroaches and the eagles with their butts on fire! Can you describe a phoenix?

Have you tried a catalog called "Music Shop?" It's a company out of N.H. and I used to get the catalog a long time ago. Carnation, I've ordered from Nature's jewelry for over ten years and I have nothing but praise for that company. Their jewelry is excellent! |

Phi Beta doesn't really have a mascot, we use the rose to represent us, and have a few secret symbols that are equally exciting. Our newest chapter started out with a local mascot, the alligator. Last year another chapter voted on the penguin as their local mascot. (I hear it was down to the penguin or the giraffe.. what a combination! I had been rooting for the turtle, as it's my old chapter & I love turtles :p) I think it's a cute idea, and gives your chapter another way to show their pride. |

He has a skinnier beak, neck and chest than your average American bald eagle. |
Maybe a Phoenix will get some more press b/c of Harry Potter, it plays a significant role. The books/movie have done a lot for the owl, which I love.

Phoenix
Carnation, the symbol of Atlanta is the Phoenix as seen on their Seal:
http://www.ci.atlanta.ga.us/ Of course at other times, it has been the Building Crane and Money Sign. ;) |
I thought I had posted this before, but I can't find it. Anyway, for non-letter sorority motif jewelry I reccommend James Avery. They have turtles, keys, anchors, I think acorns, roses, doves, you name it. They even have a charm catalogue that lists everything that you can order. I highly reccommend it.

Hahah...I was just thinking about this the other day! Kappa Delta...for those who know us, we have a nautilus shell, teddy bear, and a katydid. Every once in a while I can find something cute with a shell.....the teddy bear just seems overdone to us b/c we have Alpha Xi's on our campus who also use it.
..and a katydid? Forget it! A lot of people do not know what it is!! Suzy Zoo draws a really cute one, but those are only on greeting cards, posters, etc.... she needs to make stuffed animals! One of our advisors is a DG...she mentioned that finding "cute" anchors is hard. :) |
Yeah, try finding a "cute" Sphinx.... good thing our local mascots are the teddybear and sunshine!!!

It has been amazingly hard to find Dove jewelry that looks like a dove and not a squished up seagull!

Mascots
I love our panda and rose for the symbolism and meaning however, it used to be nearly impossible to find panda items around here but now that the Atlanta Zoo, with sponsorship from AOII has two ADOREABLE pandas there is more out there for us! :) I love going to a store and unexpectedly having a panda sighting! It is so exciting. Last week I was at the store and saw some of the cutest valentine socks with pandas on them. What a perfect V-day gift for any AOII! :) Just thought I'd share!
