Hofstra Shooting

Reports are coming in that a female student was killed last night during a home invasion at Hofstra University. Initial reports are saying that it happened at an off-campus sorority house.

Additional details have been released on the local news. She belonged to an local sorority. This was final exam week at Hofstra and students are really shaken up. There are questions as to whether the assailant shot her or the police. It is an awful event.

Wow, how sad! Ending a young life in her prime. I have no idea how you recover from something like the murder of your roommate to finish your finals, either. I've heard the whole "A" for people in that situation is urban legend.

ETA: Looks like she was a twin and she was killed in front of her sister. :(

No disrespect intended to the victim or her friends and family, but I don't view this crime as a "university shooting." It happened at an off-campus house.

Are you kidding me?

It involved university students in a house completely occupied by students A BLOCK FROM THE CAMPUS. I'm sure, though, that the school doesn't have to include it in their crime statistics if they find it irrelevant.

We would be wise to wait and find out if the victim was targeting university students. If he did, it matters not where the shooting occurred.

She wasn't in a local, she was in a community chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. We had a press release yesterday. Very sad :(

Hi All. This is my collegiate campus. The house is located feet from campus and yards from campus police - it's not as "off campus" as you would think.

This is tragic. The news just came out a few minutes on twitter that it was police gunfire that killed her, not the perp. What started as a guy looking for $ escalated quickly.

You may also have seen on twitter that this girl may be connected to Sigma Sigma Sigma. @trisigma posted on twitter that she was not a member. Her name was not on their roles. She may or may not have been pledged Sigma before or after they closed the chapter. She was listed as a member of Beta Sigma Pi in one report but I know it was Beta Sigma Phi which is not a recognized on campus group but rather regional, I believe.

My collegians reported that they were all safe but the shooting took place "at the Tri-Sig house". Again, literally feet from the campus police office. Please pray for this family.

I'm sorry but that is very disrespectful and insensitive.

Do you think maybe it was one of those things where people tried to unofficially continue their group even after they got closed down? I found this in google which seems to sound like they are saying there are people still calling themselves Tri-Sigma and they aren't? http://www.hofstra.edu/pdf/studentaf...gma_letter.pdf

Denise_DPhiE 05-19-2013 11:33 AM

Yes Old Row, that is correct. I had not seen that letter. Sigma had been a local (called Tau Chi Rho) for about 15 years before affiliating with Sigma and kept a lot of their "traditions" and I think it eventually became their demise. Sigma was one of the first NPC groups at Hofstra - I was a charter member of my group about same time they went w/ Sigma. My group was not previously a local and many of my sisters had depledged from locals b/c of their "traditions". My group just celebrated our 25th anniversary.

More on the story here. This lovely young woman had so much to live for. I ache for this family and her friends and all involved. Students will wear white ribbbons at graduation today to remember Andrea.

Note to nutbrown and all - this campus cannot house all the students who want to love on campus so it s common to rent local houses around campus. Greek housing is not allowed (County rule) but women rent houses together and it becomes a meeting spot and called the $%^ house regardless of whether or not it was sanctioned (or insured) or not.

This is just so horrible and sad. I can't even imagine this happening so close to school. I just want to hug everyone!

I found this too. http://www.hofstra.edu/StudentAffair...reek_ifsc.html It looks like Beta Sigma Phi is also on that unrecognized groups list too.

amIblue? 05-19-2013 12:43 PM

So tragic! Especially in that she was shot by a police officer, and not the gunman.

NutBrnHair 05-19-2013 03:01 PM

It is terribly tragic. A home invasion is extremely scary -- and then to be held captive by the intruder and to be shot by a police officer. Sad and tragic.

aephi alum 05-19-2013 04:12 PM

How horrible. :(

Beta Sigma Phi can exist as a community chapter made of college students. I was part of one. It does not need to be recognized but chapters should obey campus rules when it comes to advertising etc.

Yes, I realize that. I was just pointing it out as there seemed to be some confusion about affiliations etc. I thought it was rather odd that Beta Sigma Phi was called out among groups that were all kicked off campus but it looked like they were unofficially still operating somehow with a kind of strong statement on the school's web site.

We would like to advise all students and parents/guardians that there are groups of University students that wrongfully attempt to function and are not recognized by the University. For your own well-being, we discourage you from attending their events and from affiliating with these organizations. Known unrecognized groups include:*

Hofstra University does not advise or control the actions of these off-campus groups. These groups have been advised by the University and their former National Headquarters to cease ALL operations, including recruitment, education, induction of new members, and the sponsoring of and/or participation in on or off-campus programs.* Unrecognized groups, which do not have any supervision from the University or a national organization, have been shown to have high rates of hazing.* Affiliation with these groups is a violation of the Hofstra Student Code of Conduct and may subject students to University disciplinary action.

As a student, if you are recruited by or have questions about unrecognized student groups, please contact the Office of Student Leadership and Activities at (516) 463-6914 or Email Us. For information about recognized fraternities and sororities on campus, please visit our website.

I think it just boils down to the school covering its butt, regardless of BSP's disciplinary record or lack thereof.
