Kate Spade Lovers, I Need Your Help!
 

My big 22nd birthday is coming in a month and my big present is going to be a Kate Spade bag (finally, I've been wanting one for a couple of years!) I can spend up to $250.00 but may be able to go a little higher for the right bag. Can anyone give me a hint which bag might be a good investment for that money? I keep hearing about the SAM and Messenger bags. Any thoughts?

I just bought my girlfriend a Kate Spade sydney bag and it is back ordered. Its the only one I saw that was backordered so it must be popular I assume..

I have a Sydney and I really like it. It's a nice size, is cute, and the strap is a great length. It also has the metal feet on the bottom so you can put it on the ground without it getting dirty.

Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom both sell KS online, so you can check out what's available in your price range.

I agree the sydney KS bags are very practical in their use and are very cute. My friend at work has one, and she has a sydney and is total love with that one. UI believe also Lord and Taylor's Has them as well and Nordstroms.

I have a black SAM that is very useful and matches everything. Very sturdy.

I have a black large Messenger I use for my books. I've seen so many girls carry "similiar" style bags for their books around campus.

If you're wanting to pay $250- The Sam, Messenger and Sydney all fit into that price range. Though I should add that zntke711 called the Neiman Marcus operator and asked why my cranberry Sydney was backordered and apparently the manufacturer wants to up the price $50-75 bucks. They are in a price war. Hopefully they settle it so I can get my pursie! :)

I have 3 SAMs. They are very versatile with a nice amount of space. I think you can get them online at Neiman Marcus for around $175. You might consider using the rest to get a wallet. Yes, I am addicted to Kate Spade. I've got my eye on the luggage! ;)

How wonderful that you are getting a Kate Spade! I love mine. I have the black Sam that a lot of other people have, but I looked around at the Sydney and some of her other styles. I like the Sam because I carry so much around, and it fits everything inside. I can carry my Palm, essential cosmetics, cell phone, wallet, and mini-brush and there is room to spare!

Everyone's opinion is great! They were so valuable when I shopped for my sister. Looking at my sister's messenger bag, I love it too, but I wouldn't trade with her. I can use my bag ALMOST everywhere while the messenger bag has more of a sporty look that really isn't my style, IMHO.

BTW- at least in Chicago, Lord and Taylor does not carry Kate Spade. (I wish they did; they have THE best sales around.) Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus carry Kate Spade though. While shopping online is great too, there is something wonderful about walking out with that shopping bag and trying each bag for the fit.

I think Saks in Downtown Pgh is the only place that carries them around here, unless there is someplace in the Galleria/Walnut Street/Sewickley that has them. Seeing as I haven't been any of those places in a hella long time I don't know. The Lord and Taylor doesn't.

Pittsburghers: Check Footloose in Shadyside, there's also another shop, can't remember the name, but it's on Walnut St. in Shadyside , closer to South Aiken on the Ann Taylor side, that carries a lot of KS...just look in their window. In case you were planning on making the trip, Little's Shoes in Squirrel Hill does not carry them. Darn it I walked four blocks in the pouring rain to find that out :(

IUP: I would recommend the Sydney (which I think my boy is getting me for my 25th this February), or the Sam. Both are versatile styles that hold a lot of stuff. Whichever one you get, though, I guarantee you'll love it. Mine has held up beautifully for almost three years, and I've done some pretty awful things to it. I was so pleased with the quality of the Sam that I bought a basket and the keyring business card holder, and Hannukah Harry just bought me the messenger bag. Black is always a good color, but there's a nice cranberry red you might like, too.

Lil_G: I wanted one because a friend of mine kept raving about them. I was impressed by the quality of hers, so I bought one of my own. Great purchase, worth every cent I paid for it.

Wow! Thank you everybody who responded to my question! Since I live in the middle of nowhere, I will have to order my Kate Spade from a department store website. I looked at Nordstrom.com and I saw one that really caught my eye...the Sydney in a black and white pattern with pink and green ribbon down the front. I love the pink and green since those are my sorority's colors but I am worried it will look "dated" in a few years. What do you all think?

Also, I have a question about the Messenger bag. I saw one called the "small" Messenger for about $160.00 that I liked the look of but if I was getting that style I would want something bigger. Is there a bigger Messenger also?

Yes, there are 2 sizes of Messengers. I had a conversation with a sales lady at the Greenwich, CT Kate Spade shop and she told me the larger Messenger bag would be ideal for carrying school books, etc - so I purchased the larger Messenger bag. It's about $15 more for the larger one. If you can't find the larger Messenger online- go to KateSpade.com and call the nearest Kate Spade shop- they'll have it! :D

Its true. I'm an addict. I have 2 Sams, the bigger messenger bag, a canvas tote and the wallet...

I've been eyeing the smaller gray-ish/blue-ish tote a little too closely lately though....

Don't get me wrong, I love my Sam but.. Sometimes its too bulky and close to my shoulder. I think I prefer longer strap bags for most of the time. It does look very stylish when I'm decked out for work, I almost look like a grown up!

I have the small messenger and I use it a lot when I am traveling. It holds my wallet and other normal purse stuff (palm, cell phone etc) plus a magazine or two for the plane. If that helps you size it.

I like the one with the DZ colors but it is true that going with a plain nylon one will look less dated in a year or two.

Also, for anyone with a nylon Kate I take mine to the dry cleaners all the time and it comes back looking brand new!

If you want to live near Walnut Street, better start saving $$, selling personal possessions, plasma, siblings etc...:D

In all seriousness, once you get up nearer Baum Blvd the prices aren't quite as outrageous as they are in the heart of Shadyside, and you can still walk there on nice days. I used to live there and I miss it!

Sad but true! :( The saddest thing though is that if I gathered up everything you mention, I prolly STILL wouldn't have a month's rent!

I have a black sam, the tiger faille pocket organizer, and I just got for christmas the betsy sachel! I want to get the messenger bag for myself but I have to save up to pay for my new member fees if I do end up in a house. I'm going to go one weekend up to Chicago to the KS store, I'll probably end up spending wayyy too much! ;)

Okay well tonight i went over to my uncle's house and saw that my cousin has a Kate Spade purse that was sooo cute. Although, it had the kate spade label on the side and towards the bottom. It looked like a black sam bag but on the inside it had a light blue background with pink flowers- im not sure if it was authentic since it had the kate spade thing on the side??? :confused: but it was still cute! Does anyone know what the name of this purse is called? i am very interested!!

I only have one Kate Spade and its black, it has a red and white gingham lining on the inside. Its bucket shaped but very skinny- meaning its not wide enough for my things

A few months back, I saw a red and black leather Charlottesville (?) bag on Neimanmarcus.com. Well, I wanted my honey to get it for me for my birthday in December, but when I went back to the site it was no longer available. It is still featured on the Kate Spade site though.

Can I just order it from a Kate Spade boutique? I will be going home (NYC) in March and was thinking I would just pick it up then, but I am wondering if they will even have it in stock. Any suggestions?

Sourcing is important. The best guarantee of authenticity with KS is a large department store or a high-end boutique. (I got my KS from Bloomingdale's, Newport Beach, albeit on sale.)
KS purses on eBay that are listed for higher prices also tend to be authentic.

Yep, go to katespade.com and find out where the nearest Kate Spade boutique is...call them up and ask whether they have that style your looking for. They'll mail it or you can pick it up. I got my messenger mailed from the CT boutique!

I've never seen a KS with the gingham lining either, so maybe there is one KS with a blue flowered lining?? I really want to get a new sam in something other than black, would the noel weave go out of style too quickly? I'm also drooling over the messenger for my new backpack! The north face pack I carry is too big and bulky...It's my one from high school.

I have that pattern in the verticle bucket...that one doesn't really look so smushed in realy life.

I have a plain black one in the normal bucket and it isn't that short and/or bowling ball looking! That picture is scary and doesn't do Kate justice.

I can see myself carrying it because it's only $195 or so now and it will go on sale.

I'm so excited, I just bought a KS Claire in black nylon. It's the perfect purse when I'm looking for something smaller, I've been carrying it all day since I bought it. I just want to buy more of them! In the end my purchase was between the Claire and the Medium shopper in wisteria. I almost bought the baby bag messenger but I'm going to wait until I go to the KS store in Chicago.

Has anyone been there yet? I don't want it to be a disappointment when I drive two hours to get there!

I missed out on a KS Palm Beach linen green Sydney that was selling at a Nordstrom Rack for $75.

But I found out that KS' outlet in Woodbury Common, N.Y., accepts telephone orders and ships. They've got their share of pink bags. So I'm relieved, even though I will have to pay a lot more $$$.

Well, I found a green Sam in the Palm Beach linen at the same Nordstrom Rack for $80, and I took the plunge. So I don't have to deal with eBay.
