2 days for each day of rush? That seems odd to me, and both proves my point from an earlier thread, and missed it completely. Why not have 3 days for round one, 2 for round 2 and 1 for rounds 3 and 4? It's the same total number of days but gives more time at the beginning when it's critical AND the most stressful time for everyone.

Does anyone have how long each of these parties is going to last? It's amazing what 10 more minutes could do at each party and giving all sides a little rest would also be huge for attitudes and girls not flouncing off in a huff.

HQWest 02-24-2013 03:42 PM

Statistics have shown that more women drop out during or just after the first round - either because they were not prepared or because they realized they were not going to get their top choice. You want the later rounds to be longer when girls are really weighing their options.

It is difficult to accomodate the numbers -- Round 1 is 20 minutes, Round 2 is 25 minutes, and Round 3 is 40 minutes, and then there is Pref -- 50 minutes. From the other thread:

I agree that spending more time in each house would be better – but all rounds except pref are already scheduled to be 2 days long (at Bama anyway). This can be really grueling for the actives, since the chapters often have more parties than the maximum PNMs can attend (due to accommodating numbers in the physical space of the houses). In the bad ol’ days, for instance, on four-party day (now skit day – round 3), the PNMs could attend up to four parties, and each chapter conducted only four parties.

I'm not sure how many more days of recruitment would be needed in order to provide more opportunity for conversation, considering the numbers at some of these schools, but I don't think the actives would survive it!

I don’t know of a solution – just thinking out loud.

DubaiSis, this year's complete schedule has not yet been released, but the 2012 schedule had:
Round 1: 20 minute parties
Round 2: 25 minute parties
Round 3: 40 minute parties
Round 4: 50 minute parties
Click on the Greek Chic link for more info.

Rounds 1, 2, and 3 have two days of recruitment.
Round 4 is just one day.
The reason for multiple days is, as HartofSEC mentioned, being able to accommodate the number of PNMs and sorority members in the houses. You can thank the campus fire chief for decreeing that a few years ago. While there are 4 new houses that will be open for 2013, most of the other sororities are still in their older, smaller houses. See the Alabama Panhellenic Preview Day thread for details on physical expansion of houses.

Signups started today, May 1.

AnchorAlumna 06-20-2013 05:09 PM

Has anybody heard how many have signed up so far?

HQWest 06-20-2013 05:19 PM

Nope but they are starting before Auburn and Mississippi State this year?

For those familiar with Alabama recruitment, what is the last date recommendations can realistically be submitted to give a PNM a fair chance? Several weeks ago I sent out the others I've written, but I'm still waiting on a packet from one last out of state PNM.

HQWest 06-20-2013 05:27 PM

The last date for recs to be submitted is going to vary by chapter - I dont think we can say 100% sure?

As HQWest mentioned, we don't have a specific date, but many chapters (including mine, I think!) encourage June 1st. That's the date I've always heard, at least. I think as long as they're not coming in droves during or right before work week (which starts August 2nd this year), it's fine!

homeward*bound 06-20-2013 07:04 PM

Thanks all. I know it will vary by chapter and work hard to get mine to our chapter as early as possible. Good luck to all the Alabama PNMs and chapters!

bamamom11 06-24-2013 11:07 PM

1134 registered so far!

We are having such a great time getting my daughter ready for recruitment at Alabama!! Hopefully recs have been received by the chapters in time. Any advice would be most appreciated. She is OOS, but has been well-versed in recruitment at an SEC school.

FSUZeta 06-26-2013 05:59 PM

Good luck to your daughter, BamaMomma2013.

BamaMomma2013 06-29-2013 04:22 AM

Thank you! She is really getting excited now!!:)

AnchorAlumna 07-12-2013 03:03 AM

Topping 1,600 registered for recruitment.
The price goes up this weekend, so I expect we'll see lots of action!

BamaMomma2013 07-12-2013 03:11 AM

I am also getting very excited about recruitment for my daughter - not too far away!

KSUViolet06 08-01-2013 10:15 PM

According to the Director of GL, there are currently 2,002 women signed up as of today. Wow.

Titchou 08-01-2013 10:48 PM

Who says they do things bigger in Texas????

HQWest 08-01-2013 10:58 PM

Texans.

Titchou 08-01-2013 11:04 PM

They are obviously misguided!

ZTA1550 08-02-2013 07:48 AM

I'm a Texan and laughing out loud at those last three remarks! :)

HQWest 08-02-2013 01:46 PM

You have no idea of how hard I am fighting the temptation to insert some "there goes the Tide" joke....

Girlmomx2 08-04-2013 12:06 PM

Feeling very frustrated at the moment - a friend of a friend contacted me this morning and asked me to write a rec for her daughter who wants to go through recruitment at Bama this year. No resume, no photos, only two other recs lined up. On paper, she would be a great pmn but has she missed the boat?

AOII Angel 08-04-2013 12:29 PM

Maybe not if she keeps an open mind. The vast majority of PNMs receive bids at Bama. She'll likely not have lots of options, but the numbers show that most people make it. She has to go in with realistic expectations, however.

Girlmomx2 08-04-2013 12:57 PM

This is the second last minute pnm I've dealt with this year, both going to SEC schools. I hate that their lack of preparation could (and probably will) limit their choices. Good life lesson for them.

We seem to be having a LOT of them this year at Alabama.

Katmandu 08-04-2013 02:40 PM

What I hate is when you learn of a colleague's or friend's relative going through rush at a highly competitive school and you offer a rec....And they say "no thanks, we aren't bothering with those, they said she doesn't need them" or "thanks, she's not looking at KD, all her friends are Kappas" true stories. Face Palm. Good Luck with that.

Missouri Ivy 08-04-2013 02:41 PM

I get that some girls decide at the last minute, maybe they see all their friends getting ready and change their minds, whatever. But if they're asking for last minute recs, the least they can do is send the things you need to write them.

Amen!

Girlmomx2 08-04-2013 03:07 PM

I called this pmn and asked what she had done to get ready for recruitment. "Bought some really cute clothes" was the answer. She hasn't worked on recs and such because she heard at orientation that they aren't a big deal. SMH

Oh, so true! So many of my friends are hearing this from moms of PNMs! Here was the crown jewel that someone heard last week: "We aren't bothering with getting recs to ABC, they were awful at our twins' campus and I'm sure they're the same at our youngest daughter's school."

KSUViolet06 08-04-2013 09:03 PM

^^^Facepalm.

And these are the same mothers who rant about how their special snowflake was the victim of computer malfunction/jealousy/you name it and didn't get into the "best" chapter. *geez*

We're finding a lot of these late registrants came to spring preview and think they're already registered.

And then there's one who said she was waiting for all her recs to come back.
