Who likes Logic Puzzles? Here is one for you...

Does anyone like Logic Puzzles? I have been doing them for years, and decided to try creating one, which I found can actually be harder than solving one. Here’s one I made just for GC. Try it out, and please let me know if you find any problems where the clues contradict themselves or something.

There are 4 sororities at Somewhere State U, and they are all locals. From the clues provided below, can you determine each sorority’s founding date, their mascot, and their flower?

Sororities: Alpha Zeta, Beta Upsilon, Gamma Nu, Delta Iota
Founding Dates: 1928, 1951, 1982, 1994
Flowers: Daffodil, Pink Carnation, Red Rose, White Rose
Mascots: Chipmunk, Duck, Seahorse, Tiger

Clues:

1. Gamma Nu was founded after the sorority with a chipmunk mascot, but before the one with red rose as its flower.

2. Alpha Zeta was originally called the White Rose society, and when they changed their name, they kept the flower.

3. The oldest sorority has a tiger as its mascot.

4. The sorority with a seahorse as its mascot has a daffodil as its flower, but it was not founded in 1951.

5. Delta Iota was founded last, and they do not use the seahorse as a mascot.

6. The sorority founded in 1928 uses the pink carnation as its flower.

Hint: It helps to draw a grid to solve the puzzle.

I haven't done one of these in a long time, but I'll give it a shot.

Gusteau 01-31-2013 12:45 PM

That was fun! I think I've got it - I'll post my answers in white so it's not a spoiler!

Beta Upsilon, 1928, Pink Carnation, Tiger
Alpha Zeta, 1951, White Rose, Chipmunk
Gamma Nu, 1982, Daffodil, Seahorse
Delta Iota, 1994, Red Rose, Duck

Good idea, and yes, those are the answers I have, so thanks for testing it for me! :)

Gusteau 01-31-2013 12:49 PM

Woo-hoo! These were about the only things in math class I was ever good at...

angels&angles 01-31-2013 01:07 PM

I finished it and PM'ed you the answer! Swear I didn't look at Gusteau!

ComradesTrue 01-31-2013 01:51 PM

That was fun! I got the same answers as Gasteau, so it seems to work.

PhiMu_Lindz 01-31-2013 01:59 PM

I got the same as Gusteau :) That was a nice little puzzle to do as a break from real work today.

pbear19 01-31-2013 02:09 PM

Fun! I got the same answer as Gusteau. I think (although I haven't double checked it) that you could leave out the part in clue number 4 that says "but it was not founded in 1951." I didn't use that, and thought to myself that it was superfluous when I got to that clue.

Well done. :)

ms_gwyn 01-31-2013 03:59 PM

I got the same answers

Same answers, though the date in number 4 did help me alot.

MaryPoppins 01-31-2013 05:02 PM

came up with the answers posted in white. That was fun!

ZTAme 01-31-2013 07:12 PM

Lord have mercy. My head hurts.

FSUZeta 01-31-2013 07:59 PM

Woo Hoo! My answers matched Gusteau. That was such fun-thanks chi-o cat!

AZTheta 01-31-2013 08:10 PM

Add me to the "agree with Gusteau's answers" group. I love these puzzles!!! Never tried to create one, though. Just like to figure them out.

And I stink at math; that's because I'm not a Real Scientist. You can ask AZ-Alpha Xi for confirmation of that fact.

I got the same as Gusteau! Gosh, I haven't had this much fun since solving the potions riddle in the first Harry Potter book.

That was fun thanks! (Same answers as Gusteau)

Haven't done it yet because, well, I'm really tired. But I can say that I have always loved these and was very excited to find there was a whole section of these on the GRE when I took it in 1990. Are they still on the GRE? I rocked that section.

UUUUGGGGHHHH ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I LOVE these, the GRE would have been so much more fun (rather than soul-suckingly awful) if I'd gotten to take that section. No idea when they took that out but I wish they hadn't!

If you really miss them, you can always take the LSAT. >_>

New Puzzle

Okay, so it's been awhile, but I have come up with another puzzle. When I posted the first one, someone PMed me and thought it would be fun to have one using real sororities, so here we go. And this also requires a tiny bit of NPC sorority knowledge outside what is listed in the clues, but for this crowd, I'm sure it won't be a problem.

And one more note: as of today, all of these chapters exist at these campuses. If someone stumbles across this thread a year from now, it's possible that might not be the case, but the puzzle will still work, you just have to approach it as if all chapters are still open.

4 high school BFFs graduated and attended different colleges, and each joined a different sorority. Additionally, each friend joined a chapter to which they are a legacy OR have a close female relative who's already a member (no, you don't need to research each org's legacy policy to do the puzzle :)) .

Use these clues to figure out who attended which school, joined which sorority, with which family member.

Friends: Anna, Beth, Cassie, Deena
Schools: Cornell, Maryland, Penn State, Syracuse
Sororities: Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Sigma Delta Tau
Relatives: Aunt, Grandmother, Mother, Sister

Two of the four joined a founding chapter

Both Cassie, and the Penn State student, joined sororities with 3 letter names.

Neither Beth, nor the friend who joined her aunt's sorority, go to school in the state of New York.

The Delta Gamma joined her older sister's sorority

Deena joined Kappa Alpha Theta, which is not her mother's sorority.

The Alpha Phi did not join her grandmother's sorority

AOII Angel 09-09-2014 10:19 AM

APhi-Syracuse, Anna, Mother
SDT- Cornell, Cassie, Grandmother
Theta- Penn State, Deena, Aunt
DG- MD, Sister, Beth

chi-o_cat 09-09-2014 10:38 AM

Yes! AOII Angel's answers are correct. :)

ComradesTrue 09-09-2014 10:55 AM

That was fun! Thanks for posting these. I checked my answers against AOIIAngela and got it right as well.

sweetpea87 09-09-2014 03:31 PM

Got both puzzles right! I love logic puzzles :)

AOII Angel 09-09-2014 03:38 PM

That was fun. I haven't done the first one yet.

Me, too! That was fun. My Zeta sister and I were just talking about how much we liked these puzzles on the GRE. I will send them to her!
