SMU Recruitment

SMU recruitment is in session this week. I haven't had time to read other forums about it. Does anyone know if they use RFM?

WregleXO 01-15-2013 01:30 PM

Not sure about sorority rush - my son is currently going through fraternity rush at SMU. I do know that it snowed this morning in Dallas - the sorority rush parties started at 8:30 (second round) so I feel really sorry for those poor girls having to go out in the bad weather. I know that most of the houses are on the other end of the campus from where the freshman - luckily you can get from one side of the campus to the other in a short period of time.

Hey! Sent you a PM. Hope it went through.

RFM was used when I was active at SMU, although I graduated a couple of years ago.

there are few schools which don't use RFM or a version of it (Indiana being an example) and I can't think of any well known ones that don't.

Indiana does use RFM, they just have bed quota and no chapter total. Chapters are given release figures based on return rates. Yes, we know we're dysfunctional.

That's why I said a version of it!

Bids just went out at SMU. Can anyone post chapter totals whenever they can? Hope everyone made quota!

KKGAlumDGMom 01-17-2013 10:17 PM

I believe DG pledged 56 and that primary quota was 49 and secondary was 6. Bid day was today.

Will any of the chapters be going through cob in the fall?

DubaiSis 01-18-2013 01:03 AM

According to the NPC list, the school is open for expansion. I don't know if a chapter could be chosen, do their prep and colonize already next fall, but that is apparently on the horizon. But do be aware, colonies are not sure things, especially at competitive schools like SMU.

Regaring COB, make sure to register with the Greek life office. There may be some chapters that missed quota by a couple and need to pick up a few girls still this spring.

Yeah, I already contacted Greek Life and they only do informal recruitment in the fall for upperclassman. I'm kind of scared that they may not do it fall because of how many girls went through. I would hate to wait another year to go through recruitment :/

ElvisLover 01-18-2013 09:15 AM

How many pnms went through there this year?

KKGAlumDGMom 01-18-2013 09:30 AM

I believe there were 538 pnms who had registered and made the minimum 2.5 gpa cut, not sure how many actually showed up on day 1 this week.

Article on bid day from the SMU newspaper: http://www.smudailycampus.com/news/b...ster-1.2973384

No #s though.

Are you currently enrolled at SMU? If so, what kept you from going through recruitment this year?

I didn't really think it was for me. But I was mistaken and I would love to give it a try. I did go to panhellenic preview but it's such a superficial mock experience and I shouldn't have taken it to heart.

And by superficial I just mean our time meeting the girls was shorter so I guess it led me to believe it wasn't for me.

All of my friends went through recruitment and received bids :/

DubaiSis 01-18-2013 04:58 PM

Unfortunately, all of rush is superficial, and I think does lead to a lot of girls feeling like you did. It also makes girls think this one and only one sorority is the one for her, when in reality any of them would be a good fit, given time and some patience. Unfortunately, it's the system we work with, so you have to deal with it the best you can. What you get on the other side of the swamp is worth it.

It sounds like the chapters at SMU are all over total, so your friends can't do a lot to help right now, but do let them know you are interested in opportunities that arise in the future. A chapter may have an unusual amount of girls graduate or for other reasons have unexpected openings. And like I said upthread, keep your ears and eyes open for the new colony that hopefully will happen next fall. AND, they did have an upper classmen quota, so while it's harder to rush as a sophomore, they at least have some delegated spots for older students, and thus it's not impossible.

Keep your grades up, be active socially, volunteer and join clubs, take on a leadership position or two, keep your nose clean, and when the next opportunity arises, you'll be in good shape.

Also, from what I understand, there aren't the same restrictions placed on sophomores socially as first-years, so you would be able to go to the mixers this fall if your friends in sororities invite you to come.

Agree with this post, especially regarding upperclassmen quota. I saw several girls go through as sophomores and have a very successful recruitment. When I was active, I did see a couple of juniors receive bids as well during formal.

Be sure to keep in touch with greek life though and revisit them in the fall and inquire on informal. I actually joined my chapter as a junior at SMU so it is definitely possible, however when I went through there were still several chapters recruiting up to total which seeing recent recruitment history, that more than likely is not the case anymore. The biggest thing with recruitment as an upperclassmen at SMU, or any competitive campus really, is to be able to keep an open mind. Every chapter at SMU is absolutely wonderful. Feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions.

Kennedyy 01-20-2013 08:30 PM

Yeah, I'm keeping in contact with Greek Life. I just know recruitment was big this year so I hope there is at least one house that will go through informal. thanks!

Football Fan 01-27-2013 02:33 AM

Tri Delta reported a new member class of 56. Construction of the new chapter house is expected to be completed later on in 2013.
