Favorite Rush Foods!!!
To get in the spirit of those who are rushing in the winter ...
What were you favorite foods from rush? I'd have to go with chocolate covered strawberries, shrimp and dip, sushi (yum!) and 'mocktails' (i.e. kiddie cocktails ... I love those even though I'm not a kid anymore). The sad thing is that during our rush the rushees only ate about 30% of the food ... actually not so sad because we all raided the kitchen afterwards. |
Petit fours and pink and green turtle sugar cookies! Those are my two favorites!
Rushees are usually so nervous that they barely touch their food, so after they leave we always have plenty to munch on! I always volunteer to help the collegiates out with pref parties during Rush since that's when all the fun food is brought out. YUMMY! :) |
Chocolate covered strawberries, those mini cheesecakes and fruit and dip. We ALWAYS have tons left over, so before we start voting, everyone gets a plate and has a snack, since voting takes awhile :)
|
I've never seen the mini cheese cakes .... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!
I'll have to bring that one up! |
Definitely the chocolate covered strawberries. Since the strawberry is a ZTA symbol, we had tons. I wish I had one now!
|
At Chi Omega, we give each of the rushees a cake with their name written on it in frosting. The girls are stunned when they get it.

Dream Cake - enough said!

We don't have food until Pref day at the Country Club. We had strawberries, melon and cheese cake a couple of years ago-- our colors- Red, Buff, and Green. This year we just had cheesecake.
|
While I love chocolate covered strawberries I do not like them for rush unless you get very small ones that can be eaten in one bite. Otherwise you take one bite and the chocolate heads one way the strawberry another -what a mess.
I love tiny petit fours, so elegant! Fruit with a great dip is fun too. |
We did personalized cookies with the new members' names on it for our bid day party. Baked the cookies ahead of time, then wrote the names on them as soon as we got our bid list. The only problem was when one of our new members turned out to be diabetic, and she had this beautiful personalized cookie that she couldn't eat :(
My personal favorite was homemade sushi. One of my sisters knew how to make it, so on the day of pref, she and I and a couple of other people got together in her kitchen and made a bunch of rolls. All veggie - raw fish doesn't hold up too well in August :) The rushees barely touched it, so we had a LOT left over to munch on during our final voting round. :) |

That food sounds absolutely incredible...darn, you know U of I was my second-choice school, shoulda gone there :) nah, I liked my college. In any event... My chapter had very supportive alums who made all our food, and we tried to keep things healthy because we were eating it too. There were always veggies and dip, and cookies cut out in the shape of the Kappa symbols. There were also these amazing cucumber sandwiches, on little rye bread squares with some kind of yummy dressing and cucumber slices. For pref party, we had more sweet stuff, the alums made lemon bars and things like that, nothing I really remember. No personalized food, we only find out who got bids about half an hour before bid night parties start. Then we eat leftovers, heehee, and other good stuff. The day after bid parties there's always a NM/activ/alum luncheon with wonderful lasagna (both vegetarian and not) and cake, all made by our alums. |
We had for pref the best ice cream cake stuff ever! We had an amazing cook, Margaret, who is still there...she made an Ice Cream Oreo cake. Oreo crust on top and bottom, cookies and cream ice cream inside...mmmmmm!
The year I went through she made this frozen strawberry thing, that was awesome! Also...that whipped cream/chocolate pudding cake (it has tons of names, dream whip cake, better than sex cake..etc.) is great. We always did just one simple dessert, worked very well, and was served by our alumnae (since the house boys/men could not be present during recruitment). The ASA's did big sugar cookies with our names on it in icing (we got our lists the night before, so plenty of time). The Chi Omega's did cake with red and yellow. |
We usually have mixed fruit, mini quiche, these little hors douvre roll thingies, and pimiento cheese or chicken salad finger sandwiches that are made in a ravioli press so that they are sort of filled sandwiches...you'd have to see it. Then that gets taken away and you get turtle cheesecake (he he) or this year we had white petit fours with a pink rose with green stem...sooooo pretty. And to drink there is some kind of really yummy red fake champagne punch stuff. Everyone loves it. I would make it all the time if I could remember how! Oh yeah...I forgot the chocolate covered strawberries!
As for writing the names, we don't do that, but some chapters have before and they do it very speedily as soon as they get their pref lists. So when the rho chis show up with the girls, they come to the door and freak out because "oh crap, you can't already be here 'cause we're still writing names on the cookie crowns!" (that girl looked so panicked...it was cute, I loved being a rho chi!). The personalization really makes the girls feel good. |

The DZ chapter that I assist also writes girls' names on cakes for pref parties. We usually have a kitchen crew whose only job during pref is to make sure that the food and drinks go out on time, and a couple of those girls are the ones who are in charge of writing names on the cakes. They take the pref list that we receive a little before the parties start and use it to write the girls' names who will be attending the first party. Then, while that party is going on, they do the names for the 2nd party, and so on... It's a tight squeeze time-wise, but they've been doing it for years and practically have it down to an art form! :) |
When I am in a rush, I prefer Taco Bell.
Oh, you mean food for rush. My bad. |
The food that has been mentioned is pretty much the same as what I've seen. Another way to personalize things without dealing with frosting is to use metalic pens and write the girls' names on napkins. This doesn't take much time and looks nice.
|
The Panhellenic at FSU is very strict and I don't believe that chapters are allowed to serve any type of food. In fact, the only day that you can serve something besides water to drink is on Pref day. This has changed over the past few years to try to make rushees focus more on the girls than on the "frills" of a house.
|
Someone started this thread to make me feel bad. My favorite rush "food" would have to be....drum roll please...ICE WATER.
It 's so bad, that there was a vote a few years ago to determine whether or not houses could use lemons in the water. |
That really stinks that the food of choice had to be ice water. Anyone know why some universities won't let you serve real food?
I'd take a guess that probably because they don't want rush budgets to go out of control? |
we go no frills here @ my chapter and school, but all your foods sound AMAZING!
One thing we never ever forget is the candy dishes. infact we have to swat sister's hands OUT of the dish before the parties start otherwise sometimes there would never be any M&M's etc left. It's bound to happen tho...with 40some girls someone HAS to be in the mood for chocolate Our advisor/alumn always gets the new girls a cake for after initiation in blue and white frosting, yum yum. |
The silly answer we are given is that they don't want girls joining a house based on the food.
Hmm... "the girls at XYZ were super sweet and I could really see myself there, but ABC had better cake so I'll join ABC" !!!???? |

My favorite foods that we do are on our third night, which is our philanthropy party. The theme is "Bee Your Best" so we have garden decorations and stuff. We serve veggie pizza, which is a pizza crush smothered with ranch dip, carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower. I'm not a big vegatable person, but I love it! Also, we serve dirt cups with the little gummi worms in it. Yum.....*eyeing up Christmas dinner left-overs*
Zeta's on our campus always have this fantastic cheese ball that the rushees rave about. We had a joint open recruitment party with them this past year, and I had a hard time tearing myself away! LOL |
At Cornell for preference the Panhel orders and delivers the food, so every house is serving the same food for each of the three pref rounds.
Example: RD1 - all houses get veggie and cheese trays RD2- all houses get mini sandwiches and stuff RD3 - all houses have cookies and small desserts So the pnm's never get the same food twice but it is still equal to all the houses. Although I like being able to serve your own choice of food better, the above is an idea for campuses looking to do away with food altogether. |
We have really strict no frills rush, but we are allowed to serve food on pref night. This may sound silly, but everyone ALWAYS remembers us for our cheesecake. Every girl gets a regular sized piece of this fantastic cheesecake garnished w fudge and strawberries. A lot of times girls won't eat it because they're nervous, but you better be sure not a piece makes it to midnight because if they pnms don't eat it, the sisters do aferwards! We also have the regular fuirt and veggie trays annd a bread bowl w spinich dip...great stuff...not to mention the table is set up right outside me room :D

Thank God for those Pi Phi alums! They take care of all the food for our rush. They circulate the party the first night with flutes of shirley temples. The second night they provide rushees with white chocolate angels and apple cider. Kappa has "Kappa Kappacino" which is just a splendid idea. The third night ties into our philanthropy and I will refrain from posting on that since it is special to us. Pi Phi's PM if ya need a spirit or philanthropy night idea! ;)On pref night most all chapters provide a very formal dessert. We go all out with hours of decorating our formal room. We sit down at the dinner tables with rushees and share cheesecake and cider. Usually everyone is so busy crying and talking that rushees rarely eat. Especially since rushees are so nervous. In between parties we would shove down the left over food. We do personalize the arrow cookies at the top of the girls place setting. We get our pref list an hour before so while we are being assigned pref rushees, the alums are personalizing cookies!
Eating schedules are so off during rush for actives. We don't eat all day. Voting goes on until 4 AM and set up starts again at 9 AM. Luckily those blessed alums provide salads and veggie sandwiches and fondue for after the parties for all the actives. |
This is just amazing to me, yall have spectacular foods and desserts for rush. We don't even serve water! I don't know why.
There is an NPC rule that says we could get a rush infraction if a rushee takes anything out of the room after a party. For this reason we don't even have tissues! Isn't that crazy? Maybe it goes back to that rule. I haven't ever thought about it before... |

lyrelyre,
at UT-Austin they also write the names on the dreamcakes or on the plates. They have these plates with AXO written on them-I think they are so cute. I don't know when they get there pref list and how much time they have but a couple of rushes ago I was helping out and I had to write the names on the plates-I have such horrible handwriting (my mom says that it fits with me since I am a Dr.) that I finally got so frustrated I gave the job to someone else. I think you guys should try it, find 3 or 4 girls that write well and let them practice for a few hrs. It really makes a difference -more personalized. Most of the time they would order too many and ohhhh were those cakes good-I want one rt. now. We also had choc. covered strawberries. I don't remember what we did at A&M, I think we also had dreamcakes but we actually started writing specific notes to rushees that prefed our house. Each of the chapter members would usually pref at least one PNM and would write a personilized note to them-if you your panhel would let you do this I highly recommend it as the PNM were speachless and many of them started crying-it really made the PNM feel special and that was so neat to see. |
Holy God....
If Anything ever illustrated the differences between the men's recruitment process and the women's recruitment process better than this thread, I have yet to see it. (I am not slamming, as I understand how important and special these things are to ya'll, because of the extreme limits placed on you all in the recruitment process - its important to stand out wherever you can)
I can assure you we think of food about an hour before the event, and at that frantically send someone off to the deli for a few sandwich trays. We do go eat during rush, but not a single brother of mine would rave about the wings. Could you imagine me, damasa, james, deltalum, KABM, the Ksigs, beef, zntke and TOM talking about the deserts that were served to us during rush? Now that would be a sight. |
