A BIG TEN Recruitment Story

Hey all!

I've been on GC as a silent observer FOREVER, and I love reading recruitment stories, so I'm just really excited to be able to finally post my own on here!

I go to a school in the Big Ten, and we have 21 sororities at my school. 19 of them have houses on campus, and two are "off campus" sororities. While I don't have any pre-existing notions about any of them, all I know right now is that I might prefer being in the ones on campus. But, I'm keeping an open mind for rush!

Our first round is December 1st and 2nd, and then the rest of recruitment will be conducted after winter break, starting January 3rd. Due to that, there's going to be some lag in my posts, but don't worry, I won't forget!!

I changed the theme of my story from Gilmore Girls to The Hills (throwback I know, but I thought it would be more fun!)

I hope you have your recs in order. Additionally, all of the groups are "on campus." Good luck. :)

FSUZeta 11-15-2012 07:23 PM

good luck brighteyedgirl.

AOII Angel 11-15-2012 07:52 PM

You may want to go back to the other thread real quick and edit where you outed your school.

ADPi95 11-15-2012 08:13 PM

Yay for Gilmore Girls! Good luck brighteyedgirl!

It's not hard to figure out given the number of chapters and recruitment dates.

Good luck Brighteyedgirl! Go Paul Anka. :-)

Yeah, but if she wanted people to KNOW where she went, she would have put it in this thread. Sometimes these PNMs don't realize that what they put in one thread can be linked to another. Not everyone is swift enough to figure out a school by the number of chapters...everyone can figure it out when a PNM outs herself in another thread.

DubaiSis 11-15-2012 09:06 PM

Yeah, there's no point in being secretive about it unless you're going to lie significantly about the structure of the Greek system. But I will be interested to hear how the addition of 2 unhoused (off-campus is not an accurate phrasing) chapters comes off for the rushees.

Just be careful to either wait until it's all done or be extremely vague until it's all done. Even platitudes can be a bad idea on here, since others may figure out who you are, who you're talking about, and cut you since you obviously like someone else better. So in other words, tread very gently.

IndianaSigKap 11-15-2012 09:10 PM

Yes, AOII Angel, you're right. Sorry, didn't see that there was another thread with details.

My best advice to Brighteyedgirl would be to take notes from open houses and not post much at all until after recruitment. I know there are actives at IU who read this board.

brighteyedgirl 11-15-2012 09:21 PM

Thanks for all of the advice, everyone! I'm sorry for the incorrect wording by "off-campus" I did mean un housed.

I'll be careful, and after seeing how 21 Party goes, I'll decide if I should do a posting during or after.

thanks for all the encouragement! I am really excited for this experience!

brighteyedgirl 11-15-2012 09:30 PM

I also didn't mean to keep my school's identity a secret (i think based upon how recruitment is done there, it is pretty obvious) but thank you AOII Angel. I will go edit that post.

I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving! See y'all in December!

DeltaBetaBaby 11-15-2012 09:37 PM

Even if you don't make it secret, not specifically naming the school is a good idea, because then it is not searchable. Often GC threads are the first thing to pop up when someone searches "schoolname recruitment".

It's a good idea. Good luck with recruitment. Remember discretion is key on GC.

aephi alum 11-16-2012 01:26 AM

As others have said, it's pretty obvious where you go to school. I had not even heard of your school's unique recruitment structure until I signed up on GC - but as soon as I read your first post, I knew exactly where you are rushing.

Enjoy 21 party, try not to freak out over winter break (I can't imagine waiting that long to find out about invites!), and - while we love a good rush story - I suggest you keep the details on the QT until all is said and done.

33girl 11-16-2012 01:16 PM

On a tangent, while on-campus/off-campus isn't right (off campus implies that the campus doesn't sanction them), I don't much care for "unhoused" either. It's like calling someone "childless." (i.e. implies children are desired, even if the person doesn't want them)

Let's brainstorm new terms...how about "residential" and "freestanding"? LOL

IUHoosiergirl88 11-16-2012 03:52 PM

For IU, 'live-in' and 'live-out' might work? Although live-out implies that they have a chapter house, just aren't choosing to live in it...hmm, interesting verbage issue!

AOII Angel 11-16-2012 04:13 PM

Unencumbered?

AZTheta 11-16-2012 04:38 PM

OH I can't help myself, this is a word game: Wiffs and Woffs (with facility/without facility). Or some chapters could be in the Clouds (like Cloud computing? you know?) while others were bricks and mortar/on the ground. Let's see... where is my brain going to go with this challenge?

Did I take my Concerta this morning? Magic 8 Ball says "no".

I wondered the same thing about my concerta earlier today, and was dismayed to realize the answer was yes. Must have been a placebo.

Good Luck with recruitment, I also go to a BIG Ten school and will be rushing when I get back for winter break. Be sure to catch my recruitment story!! Cannot wait to hear yours!!!!!

TriDeltaSallie 11-28-2012 10:57 PM

Go Big Ten!!! :)

IUgreekmom 11-30-2012 02:14 PM

Please be open minded when you go through rush. You are at a very competitive school and all of the sororities are great. Last year when my daughter rushed many girls thought they had to be in a certain houses and were disappointed when they were cut. My sorority (I went to another Big Ten school) cut her right away which gave her the opportunity to look elsewhere. My daughter kept an open mind and had three nice houses to go to for preference. She is very happy in her house. As I put in another post some of my daughter's friends are in the newest sorority which does not have a house and are loving it.

brighteyedgirl 12-01-2012 10:16 PM

HEY Y'ALL!!!

I'm not going to do a live recruitment like people suggested, but today was the first day of 21 Party, and I'm just LOVING the rush process! Just wanted to post an update! I'm so excited for tomorrow and seeing what all the houses have to offer!

Have a good night!

Sciencewoman 12-01-2012 10:32 PM

Good luck to you!! If you are in finals before you head home for the holidays study hard and have a great holiday break! Looking forward to reading up on another epic recruitment saga when you return in 2013!

Blue2 12-02-2012 04:07 PM

Wow, 21 "houses" to visit in two days? Have they annouced how many PNMs have signed up for recruitment yet?

brighteyedgirl 12-03-2012 12:10 AM

My Rho Gam said somewhere around 1700-2000
but this is before grade disqualifications are made, so I'm assuming after the holidays some people will not be rushing due to being academically ineligible.

Thanks, everyone! 21 houses is 2 days was SO tiring, but I loved every minute of it! Every door song, conversation, and house tour was great in it's own way!

I'll be putting my nose to the grind-stone now and focusing (Trying to at least) solely on grades!

IndianaSigKap 12-03-2012 12:39 AM

So glad you had such a positive experience! You lucked out with the weather, for sure. Did you rank tonight after the last open house?

brighteyedgirl 12-03-2012 12:43 AM

Today's weather was pretty gross, but the rain held off (thank goodness!). But aside from the humidity today, the weather was fantastic! Yes, we did rank today. It was a bit nerve-wracking to be honest, but I think I'm pretty confident in my rankings. The only part now is having to wait an entire month to get back the houses for 14 party.

A general question to those familiar with IU NPC recruitment. When do the chapters turn in their invite lists?

As I understand it, ranking by the PNMs has happened now - after this first round. So do the chapters rank at this time as well since the various impressions of the PNMs should still be fresh? Then after grades come out, any PNMs who are academically ineligible are “automatically” removed (i.e. “dropped”) from the chapter’s next round invite list?

Or do chapters wait until the grades come out to see which PNMs are academically eligible and then make their invite list? If the latter is true, then in essence, the PNMs still have a month to “impress” (or not) the chapters.

If it was up to me, I’d make an initial list now, but wait to finilize and submit the list until the last possible date/time.

So I guess part of my general question is in situations like IU - where there is some time (i.e. days/weeks/month) between party rounds - is there some sort of NPC rule or guideline that says the chapters should turn in their invite list by X number of days/hours?

AZ-AlphaXi 12-03-2012 03:42 PM

For whoever was asking about the length of the 21 parties .. here's the link to the IU recruitment schedule. The length of the 21 parties was 30 minutes.

and for the interested here is a link to the statistics for formal recruitment from 2010 and 2011

ElvisLover 12-03-2012 03:44 PM

It was meant to be a joke, since there are so many parties, but thanks for the update!

DubaiSis 12-03-2012 04:30 PM

It would be unprecedented, but moving to 3 days of round 1 wouldn't be an unrealistic thing to do. Or, since it's during school, Friday night, and all day Saturday and Sunday. 4 parties Friday night and 9/8 on Saturday and Sunday seems a bit more civil. But we know how enthusiastic IU is about change ;)

AZ-AlphaXi 12-03-2012 04:37 PM

and I may be missing something .. but I'm only counting 20 party times listed under the 21 party heading.

Long Long days in any case.

It used to be three days long in the early 90s when there were 21 chapters. We had 4 or 5 parties on Friday evening, Saturday was the long day 10-12 events and then Sunday was another short day.

I don't believe chapters have to turn in the invitation list until they see the grade releases, but I could be wrong.

The chapters generate an invite list immediately after the party, but it's not finalized until grade drops happen in January. The 'official' list is due right before 14 Party, I believe.

ASUADPi 12-03-2012 09:09 PM

For the first time EVER I actually know what school the PNM is talking about!

With that being said....DISCRETION IS KEY!!!!!!!

I would do as others have suggested take notes and post AFTER recruitment is over.

Good luck with recruitment.

[mini-hijack] to those who went to IU or know IU how successful has bed recruitment been? Having gone to a school that has an established quota and total, bed recruitment is different to me. How many PNM's end up going bidless because of the system? Has there been thoughts to changing the system? [/end mini-hijack]

Grades will be to chapters on Dec 31st, invite list is due by noon on January 1st. It must be a physical, paper list that is turned in. Which means lots of women will be driving to Bloomington nice and early on the 1st.

I don't know how every chapter does it, but there is not enough time to do MS between when grades come out and the list has to be turned back in to move too much around. I would assume that everyone put together the rough invite list and then will just pull the grade drops from the list- rather than making the list after the grade drops are in.

Also, 1687 women started the day at 10am on Saturday. There were women that signed up and then dropped out before recruitment even started. There were also women that dropped out during Saturday and Sunday. But the number we had to start with on Saturday morning was 1687.

We once waited until right before the list was due, although it was miserable. We were already swamped with things to do and to have to do MS was awful. The next year it was done before break and we finalized after grade drops...much less cattiness there :D
