Sequins or not?
I know a lot of people say do not wear sequins to rush, but I have a nice sequined top from j crew:
http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category...quin/28614.jsp and I plan on wearing it with a black skirt like this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/topshop-...8A8&origin=pla This is for the last night, where girls are supposed to wear cocktail dresses. I would be tucking the top into the skirt and wearing heels and pantyhose. Do you think this is okay or should I find something else? I think it is fancy enough, but just don't know because many people discourage sequins... |
Not knowing your school(and don't tell me!), I would have to say that for the colleges I am familiar with, that outfit would be too casual for last night/pref. parties. Think of something similar to what you would wear to a church wedding or a reception hosted by the president of your college-dignified, sophisticated, conservative.
|
I agree with FSUZeta; this is not a good outfit for an event where cocktail attire is recommended. Save the top for another time. While it's good to show your personal style, you don't want to give off the vibe that you don't care/don't think the event is special enough to dress up for.
|
No sequins at recruitment. Save it for another event. This outfit is too casual for prefs where the recommended attire is cocktail dresses.
Follow the recruitment dress code at your school. |
It would not fly at Arizona.
Idea: you can go on Facebook and search for various sororities at your school. Most sororities have FB pages (maybe tumblr or pinterest as well?). They usually post photos, and there will possibly or probably be photos of what the actives are wearing at preference. Let that be a starting point and a guide for your attire. |
It's a cute top, and worn as shown in the picture (well, minus the heroin chic hair and makeup), I personally think it could be worn at an earlier round of rush. It's that casual and in that case would show some style. But I'm in full agreement that it is too casual for preference. Preference parties are no time to buck with tradition. Wear a dress, pretty shoes, do your hair, makeup, jewelry, etc.
|
The top reminds me of something you would wear clubbing. Think simple and classy.
|
Nope. I don't think the sequins are the issue unless they are on your stockings:P That outfit is way to casual. That wouldn't fly even at the school I advise at and we are ultra casual. If the information states "cocktail dresses" do just that. You want to be remembered in a good way not for being underdressed.

Has any one seen the post on pinterest on how to glitter your stockings! Every time I see it I think about that recruitment story.

I think that is too casual too and more like for clubbing or parties not rush.
Why would you wear sequined stockings? Where would you even buy them? That would be way too much! |

Truth shmooth. If you're going to start a story, you need to finish it! We can get reality somewhere else.
|
Sigh...I jumped right on this thread, hoping the sequins were on hose.
Yeah, that "thing", too. And the tiny twin. ETA: I'm sorry, I went off topic. I do like the top but with a different skirt. |
I like the top. Sure, the outfit the way it's shown wouldn't fit, but with a short (but not too short) black skirt, heels and a sparkly bracelet, I think it would be appropriate.
|
If you have to ask, just don't.
|
Cute top but way to casual for preference night.
I would go with a LBD like this... http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com...052238_001.jpg |
To the OP: Remember this... recruitment should equal classic. Think subdued, classy, and sophisticated. If it says no sequins, then don't go with sequins. This isn't necessarily the time you want your clothes to stand out as different. You want your personality to shine, not your shirt. Because trust me, you will be known as the girl with the sequins shirt, not the girl with the sparkly personality. You want to be the girl with the sparkly personality, not the other way around. I wish you the best-- save the shirt for a great party. :)
|
I have more issue with the polka dots than the sequins.
I agree that this is too casual for a cocktail-dress pref type school, and too much for a more casual school. |
Now I'm obsessing over the pink squinned pantyhose postings. Or was it rhinestone? Wasn't it in a thread about outrageous PNM behavior or something?

I say save the cute top for a crush dance or some other somewhat informal but fun dance you might have. Go for classic for preference.
Oh, and is "that" thread even still around? I would love to go back and re-read it just for kicks. (and to create the ending for myself) |
Here you go!!
Once I remembered that my awesome sister LionTamer was the one that derailed it with her idea of "that thing", finding it was easy peasy lemon squeasy. :) |

^^^I went back and re-read just the closing statement, because that was all I could take. I think the OP has been back in many guises because you just can't alter your core writing "voice" or "style" It's just too difficult. Much as I'd like to write like Dennis Lehane or John Steinbeck or William Shakespeare or Ernest Hemingway or anyone but me, it ain't ever gonna happen.
AAMOF, I bet you could copy a bunch of GCer's posts, delete their names, and we'd be able to identify them: "that's KSUViolet" "that's Gusteau" "that's knight_shadow" "that's MysticCat" "that's 33girl" "that's carnation" etc etc etc. That's how distinctive we all are. I'm not leaving anyone out, I'm just using those names as examples because they were the first names that came outta my fingers. Anyway, huge thumbs up to what summer_gphib posted upthread. |
I know that he/she also posted as key_key and anchor_anchor. I asked John to confirm that awhile back and he did. However, I also feel like the OP may have been a GC regular who was trying to start something and even started arguing with herself and posting threats to herself under other usernames.
I am sure that someone did that on a University of Texas thread a year or so ago. |
