Unexpected good movies...

Have you ever seen a movie that you just had to tell someone to watch. This movie was just 100% better than you thought it would be?

I have two:

Slingblade ~~ I don't know if any of you have ever seen this, but it stars Billy Bob Thornton. Everyone kept telling me to rent it and I did, and was pleasantly surprised.

Holiday Heart ~~ This is where Ving Rhames was a drag queen for Showtime. I must say, he makes an ugly woman, but the movie was good. Alfre Woodard won an Emmy for her role as Wanda, the crackhead mother.

Steeltrap 12-13-2001 01:28 PM

Scarface, the 1983 version with Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer and Steven Bauer.
I wasn't particularly interested in seeing this. But it was straight comedy, especially the fact that all Al basically said was: "I'm Tony Montana. F@@$ you.":p

Legally Blonde

How 'bout these!!!!

Steel Magnolias
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
The Five Heartbeats
The Stepmom

NOWorNEVER 12-14-2001 01:27 AM

Shawshank Redemption - I have a habit of judging movies by their titles.

I must admit...Steel Magnolias is one of my favorite movies. I probably have see it about 20 times. I still cry when they are at Shelby's gravesite...http://www.plaudersmilies.de/bawling.gif

Also, I was very hesitant to see The Stepmom, but I saw it when it came on cable and quite enjoyed it!

If you liked this, you'll also like Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte. Girl, Bette and Joan get it on in this one, too!! :)

Fight Club. Everyone said how awful this movie was, so I was expecting some mess. It turned out to be something that I MUST own!!!

Girl, you and me both. I saw this movie while I was riding a coach bus to Pittsburgh for a work conference. It was soooo good. I just can't get enough of it.

Meet the Parents - I thought it would be stupid but it was absolutely hilarious

Something About Mary
Long Kiss Goodnight
Double Jeopardy
Carlito's Way
A Bronx Tale

I'd have to say the movies that everyone should see are:

The Women of Brewster Place
Beaches
Fried Green Tomatoes

They were a lot better then I expected and I still cry when I see the first 2, even though I've seen them at least 6 or 7 times each.

mancala 12-17-2001 09:02 PM

A knight's Tale was a movie that wasn't expecting to be good, but I really liked it. I think that everyone should see that movie.

CrimsonTide4 05-06-2003 11:39 PM

TTT

I went to these movies without knowing what they would be about at all:

The Green Mile (TEEEEEEEARJERKER)
Shawshank Redemption
A Time To Kill
Enough w/ J. Lo

Nurse Betty -- watched it this weekend while stuck in the house

GRITS 05-07-2003 01:15 AM

The Good Girlw/ jennifer anniston
My terrible year (kiddie movie, but quite interesting)

blackerican 05-07-2003 10:12 AM

Don't sleep on this one!!!!

The Joy Luck Club.....for all those who haven't seen it please do so. Its something like the Color Purple!!!! Also, Candyman (the first one!!!)...that one had me scared to look in the mirror for a while:( :( . I loved Scarface too. Al Pacino really played that part. In fact he reminded me of my Columbian Uncle (Ok..Ok.. now i'm gonna introduce you to my little friend!!!  )!!!!!

"The Guilty"

Skeelicious1 05-15-2003 04:25 PM

A Beautiful Mind was a good movie. I never expected to watch it because of all the hype, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Gina1201 06-08-2003 12:06 AM

Just a warning that his part is not that BIG!!! I don't want you to spend your $8 and then be disappointed. However, he does look good when he's on screen.

Oh my goodness, why does my co-worker know this man. His real name is Michael Brown, but changed it to Michael Earl. He went to Univ. of Maryland, College Park.
From what I hear, he use to sing in a band called Quattro..nice voice too.

DontHaveAClue 06-09-2003 01:39 PM

Brokedown Palace was good. It's true friendship at its heart.

abaici 06-09-2003 08:22 PM

Many of the movies already named...

-Office Space
-Mother
-The Godfather (didn't see it until senior year in college; now it's my fav. movie)

blackerican 06-10-2003 12:39 PM

:D :D OK.....I just got finished watching Biker Boyz!!!! I thought that it was cute. I feel that the women's MC's (motorcycle clubs) should have been shown more. But, then the movie would have to named Biker Boyz & Girlz:rolleyes: !!! quote

A really good movie is snow falling on cedars. and if you like movies like pulp fiction then you would love Snatch, Lock Stock and Two smoking barrels, One Night at McCools... and Ronin and Go.
I am a movie hype so dont mind me and i love really wierd stuff, but i thinks these picks would be entertaining!

CrimsonTide4 06-28-2003 11:03 PM

I might get clowned BUT!!!

I just watched GLITTER with Mariah Carey and it was a lot better than folks made it out to be. I even teared up at the end -- Dice and her mom.

Mariah was looking awfully pale in the movie and stiff at times, but I liked it. :o :p :)

Steeltrap 06-30-2003 12:30 PM

Documentary

The Kid Stays in the Picture, story of movie producer Robert Evans, who helmed the Godfather and Love Story (which I've still never seen in its entirety -- I was only 6 when it was released in December 1970 :o )
Funny stuff.

Lady2000 06-30-2003 10:50 PM

Everyone has named some of my absolute favorites....Joy Luck Club, Beaches, Holiday Heart, Stepmom. One movie that I saw that I heard mixed reviews about but was the bomb to me was Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Those ladies were just too much for me!!!

Darkcoco 07-01-2003 10:23 AM

Good Fences..starring, Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover...I picked this up at Blockbuster, never heard of the movie before, it was preetty good. Monique was in this movie as well.

"Sprung" was pretty good. It was much better than I thought and actually had a positive message to it.

ZETA_ACE2003 07-03-2003 11:54 AM

These movies make me cry and are the best because they do

I absolutely love:

Riding in Cars with Boys- Having had my son at ayoung age, I could identify with the feelings of maybe I'm not a good mother but just like Bev's son, my son is very intelligent and will no doubt be very successful in life.

Color Purple- I cry every time I watch it! *singing* me and you must never part.....
