Interview with a new colony...what do I wear?
A (relatively large) national sorority is colonizing at my school this fall, and I have an interview with them set up. What would you recommend wearing? I have a business casual dress that I think would be appropriate, but since it's only a 20 minute interview is that too much? Would jeans, boots, and a nice blouse be better? Thank you!
Contact the office of Greek Life at your school. They should be able to provide guidelines for attire for each round of colony interviews. Good luck!
Business casual for sure - skirt or pants. no jeans. Make up, clean and trimmed nails, hair done.
Oooh...exciting! Good luck. :)
I already have my nails done and the make up/hair picked out, I'm just struggling with clothes! Being over/under dressed is my worst fear!
And yes, very exciting! Thank you all! |
Unless you wore "after 5" attire, you won't be overdressed. A business suit would nto be looked down upon but business casual would be better. Pants/skirt, blouse/shirt, cardigan/jacket, heels/flats (NO flip flops) are all fine.

That's the dress, do you think it's appropriate? |
As someone who went through colony recruitment, business casual would be best. Like Titchou said, a nice skirt or paints with a pretty blouse would be nice.
Looking SUPER quickly but here's just a few things I found: http://www.nyandcompany.com/nyco/pro...k-Sheath-Dress http://www.nyandcompany.com/nyco/pro...-Check-Pattern http://www.nyandcompany.com/nyco/pro...stripe-Average http://www.express.com/ruffled-ragla...ow/3/index.pro (blouse only, not the whole outfit) http://www.express.com/the-original-...ow/3/index.pro Nice jeans and cute top are more appropriate for the other days where you might mingle with other PNMs. |
As long as it is not as short on you as on the model. You will most likely be interviewed by older alumnae, i.e., not right out of college, whose tastes will most likely be more on the conservative side. Nude heels with it?
If I have a vote, I vote for business casual for the interview. Maybe you will be invited to some of the rush parties the sorority will be holding and you could wear the dress then. |

ETA: Glad we all posted at once about the length. |
It definitely isn't, I'm several inches shorter. I have either red (burgundy) heels or silver flats, I'm slacking in the shoe department and none of my friends are the same size as me. I also have silver sandals from NY&Company (not flip flops!) which I was considering.
Everyone who commented on length- I swear it's much longer on me! It's about three inches above my knees. Thank you all for pointing that out, though!
If you are absolutely, positively sure that it's not too short, I'd wear this dress. Some may disagree with me, but I really like it. If you do wear it, I would definitely look for some nude heels with it, if your budget allows.
I think it's a cute dress. I would make sure it is long enough when you are sitting so that you aren't in danger of revealing anything you don't want to show, as it looks a tad short on the (likely very tall) model, and I also would consider wearing a camisole/tank top beneath it because of the open back.
It needs to be about 4-5 inches longer...knee length. If it isn't on you, then no. The open back is also an issue. Think of an interview with your dad's boss...
I checked in PNMs for colonization interviews recently, and most of the girls had booked times when they had breaks between classes. I don't recall anyone wearing heels or looking purposefully "dressed up", but everyone looked tasteful and appropriate...business casual. Dressier pants were typical. I guarded backpacks, a huge art portfolio case, an instrument, etc. Everyone was well-groomed, but they also would have blended in during class.

I change my vote, no for this dress. The back isn't too risque, but definitely not good for an interview. |
31" from the shoulders is too short.
I was planning on wearing either a camisole, bandeau, or backless bra. The slit in the back is VERY thin, I didn't even notice it at first when I tried it on.
NO to the backless bra and bandeau looks. You are interviewing with adult women...not peers, not men. Some may be old enough to be your grandmother. It might be OK if you get invited to one of the party rounds (depending on how they are) but not an interview.
Do you have a nice white cardigan you could wear with it? That would cover the open back and give it an age-appropriate, daytime look.
What if I wore a blazer so the back was covered?
That would work, too.

I have a cardigan that matches the flats I'm wearing. Thank you all so much, I appreciate it immensely!
Sounds like a good plan! I hope you have a great interview!
Always think about your AUDIENCE when planning what to wear :) Unless you are interviewing for a job at Hooters, then short, tight, low cut, or backless is not the best idea!
eta: You want to be remembered, but not as "the girl in that AWFUL dress"! |
Did not notice the back of the dress. Glad my GC panhel sisters did, and that the OP came up with a solution.
Thanks to all of you for every bit of help, I figured I'd update in case anyone was curious. To clarify, that dress reached from about the middle to the top of my knees, so I decided that it wasn't too short. I was all set to wear a blazer with it, until I came across a pack of safety pins in my desk! I pinned up the entire back, and many safety pins later you would never have known it was open to begin with. That dress, plus some nude flats and a pretty smooth interview led to my receiving a bid!! =) I couldn't be happier, thank you all so much!
Well, aren't you handy?! ;) That's terrific news! Congratulations.
Will you please share with us the group you pledged?
Congrats, by the way. And thanks for coming back to let us know you got a bid! |
I'd like to know, too! Congratulations!
