A Hunger Games Recruitment!
Hey everyone! I’ve been posting here on GC for the last month or two leading up to recruitment, and finally it’s (almost) here! I’m going to try to keep my school’s identity a secret, so if you guess where I go please message me instead of writing it here ☺. I go to a pretty big school where Greek Life is decent sized and there are 8 (?) NPC sororities. Anyway, no one in my immediate family was involved in Greek Life, but a good deal of my friends have recently gone through recruitment in the south so I am getting pretty excited! Though at my school it is not required, I had recs to two of the houses. Recruitment begins this weekend, with bid day on Friday the 14th. I know a live recruitment isn’t a good idea, so I was thinking I would post two days behind! (As in I will post about day 1 when it is day 3 and so on) Plus, I’m so excited about recruitment I wanted to share already ;) Tomorrow is my orientation, and then only a few more days to go!
A week before recruitment begins, we had an optional pre-recruitment event for people to go to booths for the different sororities/fraternities, talk to members, and see if Greek Life was something they would be interested in. Though all of my friends only went to the booths for their ‘favorite’ sororities but I made sure to go to each booth. Oh, I almost forgot to mention my theme! In another thread I saw someone mention they were surprised there wasn’t a Hunger Game’s recruitment thread yet. So here ya go! The sororities names (in no particular order) are: Katniss, Peeta, Gale, Haymitch, Primrose, Rue, President Snow, Finnick, and President Coin. So here are my thoughts! Rue- These girls were the first table I went to that were extremely outgoing and friendly. One girl I spoke to had a personal connection to their local philanthropy, and when she spoke about it, it was very heartwarming. I also have multiple connections to their national philanthropy. Gale- These girls were nice, but honestly all I really remember about them is that they are the sweethearts of the frat my boyfriend is rushing. I didn’t want this to impact me during recruitment, however, so I can say I pretty much have no opinion on them. Katniss- These girls all had probably 2-3 inches on me (and I’m 5’7!) and looked more like models then college students. However, the recruitment chair is one of my friend’s girlfriends, so this made me feel more comfortable. The other girl at their table was possibly the nicest, funniest person I met all day. However, she said something that kind of turned me off. She asked which sorority I liked that best and would like to join. I’m pretty sure that’s one of the number 1 things you aren’t supposed to ask! Either way, I still really liked these girls. Haymitch- The sister I spoke to was so friendly and obviously very into their philanthropy! A girl I went to school with is in this sorority, and not to be blunt, but I just really don’t like her. When I mentioned to the girl I was speaking to (who was an officer) that I went to high school with this girl, she didn’t know whom I was talking about. The chapters at our school have about 60-80 girls so I was a little bit surprised. President Snow- Again, don’t really remember a lot. 2 of their sisters have been constantly texting my roommate, trying to get her to rush them, while completely ignoring me. My roommate, by the way, has made it very clear that she isn’t interested in Greek Life whatsoever. President Snow, Haymitch, and Rue seem to be a lot of girls favorites going in. Peeta- One of my friends from back home is in this sorority. I was expecting to love them, but when she introduced me to their President, she kind of blew me (and every other girl she spoke to) off. However, later on I ended up talking to 4 of the sisters at one time and it felt very natural. This is one of the houses I have a rec to. Primrose- I remember these girls were extremely nice and friendly, but nothing really stuck out. They seemed very involved in their philanthropy, which I really liked. Finnick- By far, this house had the largest and most informative display. The girl I spoke to was really nice, but something odd happened while we were talking. One of the sisters, who was standing nearby, pointed at me while I was talking to the other girl. When she pointed, the sister she was standing with and the boy she was talking to both turned around and looked at me. I was wearing large sunglasses, so I’m assuming they didn’t know I saw them. My other rec letter is to this house, so that may have been the reason for her pointing, but something about it felt really rude. Whether or not this was positive, it made me feel extremely uncomfortable, to the point that I completely stopped in the middle of my sentence. President Coin- I know this makes 9 sororities, but I’m a little bit confused about this sisterhood, as they are not listed on my schools Panhellenic page and I’m pretty sure there are no sororities colonizing. Anyway, there were only about 4 girls from their sorority here, and they only had one half of a display board. However, they did have cookies with their letters, which I thought was sweet and showed a lot of effort. Unfortunately, they were placed right next to the DJ so it was impossible to hear them. I didn’t really see anyone else come up to them while I was there, and I felt really bad. These all seemed like great girls, if a little unsure of themselves. So that’s it for my super long intro post! I promise the next one will be about 1/4 this size. I’ll post more tomorrow after orientation ☺ |
Another recruitment that's totally drawing me out of my habit of lurking, not commenting...............
YES! FINALLY! HUNGER GAMES! :D I will be rooting for Finnick because he is by far the best character, Katniss be damned. Also I'm going to assume you've read all the books based on your codenames but SPOILERALERT for everyone who hasn't (stop reading now...), but he's only the second character I've ever cried for in a book. I think I had to put the book down when he died because I couldn't read anymore through the tears. I can't wait for the movies and to see how they handle him and everything!! Good luck and I will definitely be reading! |
Yay! Finally someone picked up this theme! I'm rooting for Peeta and Rue!
|
Thanks guys!! And yes, happilyanchored, I have read all the books and I can definitely agree with crying over Finnick!!

Team Peeta forever
|
Woo, Hunger Games theme! I'm going to root for Finnick! And maybe also Haymitch. :) I hope Finnick doesn't turn out to be too weird. After all, his first impression in the books is really weird and he turns out to be awesome! Can't wait to hear the rest!
|
Go Rue!
|
Awww my recruitment story was going to be Hunger Games hehehe. Guess you beat me to it. I'm team Peeta! :)
|
Yeah! Good luck and I'm looking forward to hearing all about your recruitment!

Totally team Peeta!!

Team Peeta!

Hey everyone, I just got back from my orientation! I'm definitely excited, but was a bit disappointed to hear the VP of the recruitment (Or something along those lines) say 'eliminate chapters you don't like'. They also had a fashion show for what to wear sponsored by a boutique in the area, and for pref night they had a super short, tight white dress and a sequined dress. Oh, also most of the girls in my group were sophomores which I thought was odd. But that's it for tonight and now all I can do is wait.
Also, thank you everyone for your responses and words of encouragement! They're much appreciated. And wishful, I'm sorry! I'm willing to share the theme if you are though :) |
That language makes me CRINGE! Especially since (yes I sound like a broken record) that is SO NOT what you're doing.
|
I completely agree! I even mentioned to another girl in my group that you don't 'eliminate' any sororities, but she didn't really believe me.
Oh, I forgot to say anything about my Rho Gammas! Ones nice enough, but seems kind of lost. I'm really not sure what other word to use! As for the other Rho Gamma, she seemed really nice, but because of her major was only there for the last 5 minutes when we were separated into different groups and won't even be there pref night :/ |
Wow. Sorry for that. If you're having trouble with an issue, maybe there's another Rho Gamma you can befriend? The one might just be really nervous and didn't come off as very confident. Being a Rho Gamma is a big deal so she might be better than she seems at first glance.
|
Oh, I didn't mean what I said about my Rho Gamma in a negative way at all! Nervous is a better word I think. We had a long conversation about bags but I just don't know if I'd feel comfortable telling her my insecurities. However, all my friends say that their Rho Gammas are awesome so I can always go to them if I don't feel comfortable enough to go to mine :)
|
Am I the only one that is Team Gale?!!?!
|
Hey guys by any chance does anyone have the link to the post about what to bring in a bag to recruitment? I've tried searching every variation of the words possible, and just can't find it! If anyone can give me the link that would be greatly appreciated :)

http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums....php?p=2153573
sometimes it's easier to search via Google,I searched greekchat recruitment bag |
Thank you! I tried doing that but didn't use the word bag so I couldn't find it. I really appreciate it! :)
|
I JUST finished reading the third book and now I'm even more excited to hear about your story :D good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Day 1
The night before Round 1, I could barley sleep I was so nervous! However, I did end up getting a good night sleep (thanks to getting in bed at 8!) and felt well prepared for the next day. Though I was nervous for my first house, I ended up feeling very comfortable and by the end of the day was even more talkative then the beginning! So here’s how Day 1 went.
Day 1- House Tours Rue- This was the first house of the day. I was paired with another PNM and my rusher seemed so nervous. She was sweet, but all the questions seemed super rehearsed and when she bumped me to her sister, she completely cut me off in the middle of my sentence. Katniss- Love, love, LOVED them!! After the disappointing time I had at Rue, I was thrilled at Katniss. I wasn’t paired with another PNM, and the girl I know, who is an officer, personally said hi to me. All these girls were so friendly and relaxed. They were also so gorgeous, as I said before. One thing I noticed is every girl seemed to have dark hair, while I was born with naturally platinum-blonde hair. And they all were SO TAN!! Despite my feelings that I didn’t quite look like them, I loved every sister I talked to. Peeta- Again, I loved this sorority. I was picked up by an officer, and she was so sweet! Thankfully, I wasn’t with another PNM. At one point, I saw a modeling picture and said, “Oh, is that the girl who won Miss State Beauty Pageant?” And she kind of laughed and said, “Nope that’s me”. I felt so bad! I apologized and hoped that didn’t get held against me. The girl I got bumped to was slightly more awkward, but still friendly. Snow- I was pleasantly surprised to really like them. The PNM I was supposed to be paired with had already dropped out, so I was alone with my rusher. She was really nice and 3 different times I was double rushed. Gale- I was paired up again with another PNM. It was kind of weird though, we went up the stairs then got to look around by ourselves, and then we met up again with the sister. Unfortunately, I seemed to have more in common with the PNM then either of my rushers! Haymitch- Though I really liked my rusher, I just couldn’t see myself in this house. They were known as the more ‘bad-ass’ sorority, and I felt I was probably too preppy to feel comfortable. Suprisingly, the girl from my school was actually really nice to me and asked how my day was going. I was paired with a PNM here (again) and I felt bad… she was so awkward and quiet! I would be happy to come back, but I’ll be surprised if I’m asked. Finnick- I’m sorry to say everyone, but Finnick keeps getting weirder and weirder. This was a larger chapter, so I didn’t need to be paired up with another PNM. However, I was one of the last girls called in and we all went into a backroom. My rusher barley talked about her sorority, and the house tour and financial aid presentation was only shown to us for about 5 minutes. I left here feeling snubbed. Primrose- The first girl I got paired with was nice, but didn’t really seem like my type. Neither did the majority of girls in this house- they all seemed to be in the graphic arts program and very artistic. The girl I got bumped to was so awkward and just kind of stared at me. They did have the best drinks though ☺ The way I ranked the houses for tonight (In no particular order) are: 1. Katniss 1. Peeta 1. Snow 1. Gale 1. Haymitch 1. Finnick 2. Rue (The rest of the night I wished I had put Finnick here instead of Rue, but what’s done was done!) 3. Primrose Stay tuned for day 2! (Also, as I said before, I'm posting this 3 days after Round 1 so it's not quite 'live' :) ) |
Day 2
Day 2- Philanthropy
I was a nervous wreck waiting for my bid list today, especially since they started handing them out while I was in class! After running to the area to pick up my list, and waiting in line for 30 minutes, I finally saw my party schedule. On day 2, we have a max of 3 parties, and day 3 we have a max of the remaining 3 parties. It read as follows: Party 1: Peeta Party 2: Katniss Party 3: Snow Next day Party 4: Rue (I had class ending 15 minutes before this party started, so I knew I would be a little bit late so I got a courtesy bid just in case) Party 5: Gale Party 6: Finnick I wasn’t surprised at all when I saw I was dropped by Haymitch but was absolutely ecstatic to see Peeta and Katniss as my first two parties! I have a bad habit of looking for coincidences, and couldn’t help but think it was fate that my top 2 from yesterday were my first two parties for today… ☺ Anyway, I knew I was blessed to have a full schedule, since many girls had 4 parties to go to, and some only had 1 or 2. My group was the largest recruitment class ever, so I knew there would probably be the heaviest cuts after Day 3. Peeta- I was one of the last girls called in today, and I was afraid that meant something bad, even though I’m sure it meant nothing and I was just paranoid :p However, the girl who picked me up was really friendly and their craft was cute. The next girl who bumped me I LOVED… it felt like I was talking to my best friend! I got bumped 3 times, and I think I talked to either 2 or 3 seniors. Every girl here I loved and the time seemed to fly by. I was definitely falling for Peeta. Katniss- I was once again amazed by how gorgeous and sweet these girls are. However, two of the girls rushed me were girls I got rushed by yesterday. They were great, but I wanted to meet more sisters! The video for their philanthropy was heartwarming, especially when the president explained how it personally affected her, but the craft itself was very easy and only took about 5 seconds. Either way, this was still one of my favorites. Snow- When I got here, I was starting to feel kind of tired and sick. I was paired up with another PNM this round, and to make matters worse, the girl rushing us had already rushed the other girl yesterday AND they were from the same state! In fact, everyone here seemed to be from the same state. It was so loud in here that I couldn’t hear anything at all and my ears started to ring. One perk, though, is their philanthropy is almost directly connected with my moms career, so I knew a lot about it. I'll post Day 3 tomorrow! |
Peeta and Katniss!
Unfortunately, there really can be only one winner... |
Day 3
Day 3- Philanthropy
Rue- Because of my class, I was about 5 minutes late to this house, but still was there in time to see some girls getting called in. I was paired with another PNM who had not been called in for whatever reason, and though these sisters were nice, I really didn’t feel a connection. Gale- I was surprised how much I ended up loving this house, and the weirdest thing happened to me when I walked into their living room. Before, the room was crowded with girls, but since I was one of the first girls to walk in this round, I could see how gorgeous it was and the first thought that popped into my head was “this feels like home”. I really liked the first girl who rushed me, but the second girl I got I absolutely loved. I had the same connection with her as I had with the girl in Peeta. She also lived in my hometown, which is so rare because it’s more of a tourist attraction. Everyone says keep an open mind, and I definitely agree now. A sorority I could barley remember before jumped to my top 3. Finnick- I was shocked to see them on my schedule. Unfortunately, Finnick just kept getting worse and worse. Myself, as well as 3 other girls, did not get called into the house! The sisters apologized and explained some girls must have forgotten to say our names, which I understand but didn’t really make it better. The girl I was paired up with was nice enough, but didn’t really seem all too interested in me. Oh, and they didn’t offer me a drink when I walked in. I ranked the houses as following (In no particular order): 1. Peeta 1. Katniss 1. Rue 1. Gale 2. Snow 3. Finnick |
Day 4
Day 4- Skit Night
Party 1- Rue Party 2- Snow Party 3- Gale Party 4- Peeta I was a little sad to see Katniss gone from my schedule, but I knew I would never really fit in there. Again, I knew how lucky I was to have a full schedule, especially one that included Gale and Peeta. Rue- I went into this house with a positive attitude, but just did not feel a spark. I was also kind of annoyed when they called my name and ANOTHER PNM went forward, so I had to go in last, making me sit in the back row. Their skit was clever but I just felt kind of bored the whole time and my rusher and I didn’t really have anything in common. Snow- Their skit was SO cute and involved so many of the sisters! The only downside was we were all in a small room so it was hard to hear again and it was hot, as in I could see the sweat dripping from my rushers and fellow PNMs faces. One thing I really liked is my rusher introduced us to her twin- her biological. Her mother, twin, and little sister were all Snows at my school! Gale- I just keep falling more and more in love with Gale! Their skit was cute and had a lot to do with sisterhood, but what I really liked was my rushers. I felt so comfortable with them, and the second girl to rush me was in my major! I can definitely see myself in Gale. Peeta- I told myself I wouldn’t fall in love with a house, but I absolutely adore Peeta. Their skit was adorable and funny, and all the girls were so talented! The girl rushing me was sweet, and at one point my friend came over and I was talking to both of them and I just felt so comfortable. After that, I talked to two other sisters who were in the skit, one who was also in my major. Peeta also had the most delicious drinks… so so good. This was also the only house that a sister asked me what I wanted out of sisterhood. It was weird, I knew what I wanted but I was caught so off-guard when she asked me this. I hoped I gave a good answer, because I was kind of struggling for some reason to articulate what I was thinking. The only thing that worries me is a lot of girls really love Peeta… I ranked tonight as follows (No order): 1. Peeta 1. Gale 2. Snow 3. Rue As a side note, I’d like to say that I made the names for the different sororities before recruitment even started. I honestly did not expect Gale and Peeta to be my favorites! Oh, I almost forgot to mention! I got my bid today so the rest will be posted tomorrow :) |
Quote:
Congrats! Please make sure and come back to finish the story. |
Oh I will! Its actually all written up already, the only reason I'm not posting the rest now is because I'm at the doctors and then have bid day so I just have to wait until I'm back at the computer :) Also, please excuse the run on sentence :p

Day 4
Day 4- Pref Night
Hey everyone! Sorry I didn’t post sooner. I had to go back to the hospital today ☹ Anyway, my schedule for Pref night was as follows: Party 1: Snow Party 2: Peeta Again, I was thrilled Peeta was on my schedule, but was surprised Snow asked me back. I had a class that ended about an hour and 15 minutes before my first party, and since it was about 3 miles away from the sororities, I decided to leave half an hour early. This was where my night went bad. The main transportation system at my school was not working, so after 30 minutes of waiting for a bus and a taxi, I was starting to get desperate. My phone calls weren’t going through, so I couldn’t call anyone. An hour before the party, the transportation system was back up. I guess it wasn’t REALLY back up, though, because it took me to the wrong place. So I had to walk uphill all the way trough campus to my dorm. I had about 25 minutes to get ready. After my friend helped me do my hair and make-up, I had 15 minutes… and the zipper on my gorgeous dress was stuck. About 5 girls tried to fix it until it finally just broke. 5 minutes until the party I had nothing to wear… so I threw on the first suitable dress I could find. With one minute to spare, I left my dorm. I had already told my Rho Gamma I would probably be late, but I didn’t want to be anything more than 5 minutes past the time the party started. So I asked a random person how to get to Snow from my dorm and she pointed me in the wrong direction. I finally figured out how to get there, and then the guys in the house across the street started heckling and mocking me. At this point, I was devastated. My Rho Gamma looked at me, asked what was wrong, and I burst into tears while all the girls were getting called in. It was awful, and I was so so embarrassed. She was so sweet though, and helped me gain composure as she assured me my name had not yet been called. Despite everything going wrong, I still had made it there on time(ish)! Snow- The girl who picked me up was the same girl who rushed me the first day. She was so sweet and genuine, but she was also the only person I felt I really got along well with. The card she wrote was so personal and kind that I almost cried again. However, I guess this house has a bad reputation and there have been some hazing rumors flying around (which I never heard until she brought them up), and the whole time she talked about this. During the ceremony, I found myself zoning out (I later found out this was because I was getting really sick) and didn’t really feel moved. I left feeling no different then when I came in. Peeta- I managed to get here without any issues, thankfully. My friend from back home called me in, and I couldn’t have been happier. She showed me a card that had notes from a few different girls that had rushed me, and told me how she had to fight with another girl to pref me. At one point, she said to me, “cr2817, I want you here. You ARE a Peeta.” This made me even happier, and increased my feeling of belongingness. Though I won’t go into detail about the ceremony, I really really loved it and the tradition surrounding it. When I left, my friend hugged me and said how happy she was that I was there. On the way to our final ranking, I was trying to decide what I should do. Though I know you are never, ever supposed to suicide, I was considering it. I knew if I accepted a bid from Snow, the whole time I would be thinking about Peeta, and I wanted to be able to give whichever sisterhood I was in my all. My main reason for thinking about this, however, was numbers. My recruitment group was over double the size of last years group, meaning many girls would be cut. So many girls loved Snow, and I would feel awful if I got a bid there, over a girl who really wanted to be there. Against my better judgment, I decided to only rank Peeta. I figured if I didn’t get a bid, I could always participate in informal recruitment. After I finished my ranking, I began to doubt my decision and could barley sleep that night. |
Bid Day
Bid Day
On bid day, I woke up feeling awful. I had a sore throat, headache, and fever. I had to leave my first class early, so for the next two hours I was lying in dorm preparing for the call to let me know I had been dropped. Finally, my phone rang with my Rho Gamma’s text alert. I knew it… it was over. I read the text. And I read it again. And again. It said, “Don’t worry, you won’t be getting a call from me today.” I could hardly believe it… I was getting a bid!! I called just about everyone I knew, before I decided to go to the doctors to make sure I wasn’t contagious. After this, I went back to my dorm to get ready, then to go pick up my bid with some of my friends. It seemed like forever until I finally got my bid card, which read… Peeta AKA…. KAPPA KAPPA GAMMA!!! Last night was one of the best nights of my life, and I absolutely love my sisters. All the sororities have their largest pledge classes in the history of my school. In fact, the number of pledges in all the houses is half the current members! However, because of so many girls going through recruitment, only half of the girls participating in recruitment girls got bids. I know how lucky I am that I not only got a bid, but to the house I loved from day one. As it turns out, 3 of my friends are my pledge sisters, and one of my Rho Gammas is also in Kappa! I’m so excited to begin my life as a Kappa and with my new sisters. Also, I would like to thank everyone here on GC for all the advice they have given my (many) questions. Without you, I don’t think I would have been prepared at all! So thank you all very much and I’m sure I’ll stick around to continue reading all of your great advice ☺ |
Congrats on getting your choice! Kappa is absolutely wonderful everywhere I've been.
I'm sorry about your horrible start to pref. I would have been freaking out. Those guys were huge jerks to heckle you for being late. Are you okay now? Was it just strep or something else? |
Thank you KDCat!
Honestly, it was like a nightmare come true, especially when the transportation went the wong way. My friend jokingly said it was like Friday the 13th, but then I didn't think it was so funny.Looking back, I shouldn't have taken it personally but it was just all so overwhelming! Also, I'm still pretty sick unfortunately. It's not strep, so hopefully it's just something viral. I'm on steroids for my throat though so hopefully I'll feel better by my first meeting! Thank you for asking! :) |
I would have lost it. Completely and totally lost it. Good for you for getting it together enough for the parties.
|

I think someone gave you some misinformation in regards to the large # of girls participating in recruitment vs. the amount of girls who received bids. There are only a couple-I believe 2- of campuses that we know of where girls may play be the rules, attend all the parties they have on their schedule every day, and still not end up with a bid. Ordinarily, quotas are determined after bid cards are signed after pref. parties, so that every PNM who signs a bid card has the best chance to receive a bid. Now girls on your campus may not have liked their choices through out the week and dropped, not liked their pref. choices and not signed their bid card, or single intentional preferenced(sip, aka suicided) one sorority and ended up with no bid, but it is unlikely that half of the PNMs that started recruitment at your college simply did not receive a bid due to the high volume of PNMs participating in recruitment. |
Welcome to KAPPA! :D
|
Welcome to KAPPA! You will love being a part of our sisterhood! I think other Kappas will agree with me when I say that I am so happy for you to experience all the amazing things that Kappa has to offer! Enjoy your NM period!
