Kids Television
So, maybe some of you parents can sympathize, but kids television is just TERRIBLE these days.
Banned in our house simply for stupidity: Sponge Bob, Adventure Time, Angry Oranges, and Regular Show Banned for inappropriateness: Victorious It's aimed at pre-teen, but one episode a character talks about not being able to get her boobs in the costume and in another a girl hugs a guy and the guy pushes her away and says "Don't start something you can't finish". We haven't banned iCarly, but all these shows the kids are sassy and the adults irresponsible when there even are adults present. Looney Tunes & Scooby Doo have revamped themselves into over sexualized drama-mongers. Bugs is a jerk, Daffy is a free-loader, Porky is a co-dependant, Speedy is a hawker, and Lola us flat out ridiculous. Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy always have relationship drama. I do have to say that I really like Phineas and Ferb. Other than that, what the heck? I know I've gone overboard with my show banning in some peoples' minds, but why can we just go back to Coyote falling off a cliff and Jerry bashing Tom's face in with a frying pan? Yeah, it's "violent", but it's slapstick that people understand is for humor. Ugh. |
If it makes you feel better, both iCarly and Victorious have been cancelled.
I don't like most of the "tween" shows on the Disney channel because they all make the parents look like total idiots. We mainly stick to movies at my house since with three boys playing various sports, we aren't home much- so it's hard for them to get sucked into a particular show. But Phineaus and Ferb is one that I don't mind. Probably because the person that voices Ferb is the boy from Love Actually, and the voice of Vanessa is "Joanna" from Love Actually. |
Seconded. It's why we don't have cable or satellite. Only streamed content in our house.
|
I co-sign the stupid children's TV, especially on Disney. The parents are all aloof and stupid. The lessons learned come off super corny (not even like Full House corny, but just... its different) and the children ALWAYS outsmart the parents. Makes me wonder if child services should come for them.
The Suite Life is one example, and the one with Kyle Massey? Yeah. I think the shows are cute, but super silly and unrealistic. |

One show these highschoolers live in Hollywood, but just decide to drive to San Diego by themselves? On a school night? That would have been like me taking a random trip to Chicago...I would have been toast when I got home. |

But life is good -- lately my kids have been asking to watch Fawlty Towers. Too bad there are only 12 episodes. |
My kids are really into nature shows these days. They'll watch something and then see if they can find whatever it was that was featured on the show (whales, cougars, pythons, you name it) in our back yard.
America's Funniest Home Videos reruns are among their favorites, too. |
pajanimals...fantastic.
|
I take back what I said about my kids not being into one particular show.
My 5yr old is ADDICTED to Star Wars The Clone Wars. I refer to him as the "nerdling"- I even took him down to GenCon this year to see all the people dressed in Star Wars garb. He was in heaven. He has also watched the original three Star Wars movies so many times that he wore out the dvds. |
As all of you know, I have 2 g-daughters in K & 3rd grade.
They love Big Time Rush. It makes me want to stab myself. |
I couldn't even believe how bad it was when I babysat this summer. I don't know if I even want a tv in the house when I have my babies!
|
I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old. Somehow I have managed to shield them from all the crap TV. They watch PBS, mostly good shows like Super Why that are not only productive/educational but don't annoy me to no end. Beyond that, the 5 year old likes to watch SportsCenter, First Pitch, and any sporting event. The 3 year old will stream shows like Angelina Ballerina and Strawberry Shortcake on the iPad. Since we only allow 1 hour of TV a day, their choices are quite tolerable at this point.
However, I dread when they actually discover that our TV has Nickelodeon and the Disney channel. My limited exposure with both of those channels has been nothing but trash. We may do away with TVs once they hit the tween years! |
I know this is about bad shows, but I love Olivia and Lazytown.
Don't like SpongeBob. |
I also have a 4 year old nephew.
With that said, my God. How is Caillou still on the air? It may possibly be the single most annoying children's show on TV. |
Caillou is a whiner.
|
That's the only show I don't allow when I'm babysitting my nephew.
His voice = nails on a chalkboard. Then my nephew started mimicking it. I almost became an intravenous wino that day. So my house is a Caillou-free zone. |

Because Arthur is the business. I don't have kids and I watch it #thuglife |

No, really. I had to do it for storytime at B&N. http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...1/Untitled.jpg |
My little ones (4 1/2 and 2 1/2) enjoy Doc McStuffins and Gaspard & Lisa on Disney Jr. I can actually watch these with Mikey and Caiti without wanting to poke my eyes out with a rusty nail. I can tolerate Bubble Guppies and Dora in small doses.
SpongeBob has been banned in our house. |

I HATE Caillou, thankfully my kids do too. Also banned in our house: Anything on Cartoon Network (unless there is a movie on, which is occasionally), Barney, all of the Tween shows (we liked Hannah Montana, but those aren't even on reruns anymore), Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Freshbeat Band and Spongebob.
Disney Junior channel has been getting good use lately. I tolerate Dora and Diego. My older 2 are getting too old for those though. We all like Phineas and Ferb. My oldest, who is 6, loves Animal Planet and Discovery. I'm cool with that. It prompts a lot of questions, like "Mom, what's sex?" (When watching Shark Week, no less). She likes some stuff on Hub, like MLP and SS. She prefer movies though. My middle, who is 4, likes Mike the Knight, Transformers, typical superhero cartoons, Bubble Guppies and Team Umizoomi. The latter 2 are good for learning at least. |

A lil bit of both. The girl who normally dressed up called in sick so I volunteered. Costume was hot as Hades but it was kinda fun. :o
ETA: At least I didn't have to be Cat in the Hat. That outfit looked HAWT. http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t.../Untitled1.jpg |
Super Why, Cat In The Hat (Knows A Alot About That), Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and a bunch of shows on Dish Network's BabyFirst TV are regulars for us.
Spongebob is a non-negotiable "no" as are most of the total crap shows on Cartoon Network. |
I think I'm kind of lucky here--the most annoying show my kids watch is Austin and Ally, mostly annoying because of the LACK of any kind of adult supervision at all.
Other than that and some of the cartoons (and the odd episode of Mythbusters), they'd rather play with Legos. One of these days, I would love to introduce them to some old-school Warner Brothers stuff. |

I have an almost six year old. We have no cable or dish. I despise 99% of television programming and commercials. We have invested in a lot of DVDs of shows we think are worthwhile. The good list:
*Baby Einsteins *Little Einsteins *Little Bear (I. LOVE. THESE.) *Curious George (These are fantastic and you can pick them up for $5 at Target and Meijer for 8 episodes) *Winnie the Pooh *Leapfrog *Thomas the Train *Angelina Ballerina (library) *Bob the Builder (library) We've also let her watch some things on YouTube like old Loony Tunes that are appropriate and Baby Loony Tunes. We also own all of "The Cosby Show" and "Little House on the Prairie". She loves Cosby and she's seen most of the ones that are appropriate for her age. We've watched some of the LHOTP but many of them have really mature topics for a five or six year old. We brought home Dora and Diego once from the library and said NO WAY. So annoying!!!! Same with Barney. Yuck. I've heard other people complain about Caliou as well. We never tried it. I highly recommend anything on my list above. All good stuff. |
I can't believe Barney has lasted this long. I banned him from my house 20 years ago when he was fairly new. When my kids were little they absolutely loved a show called Under the Umbrella Tree. Was very age appropriate, cute, no whinny characters. We taped several episodes which I still have in the garage. Daughter wants to be able to share them with her kids if and when they begin to materialize.

It made me want to pull my hair out. The original books were charming, but, like happened with Curious George and Winnie the Pooh (boy has Disney ruined that), the series and over-milking and over-marketing left me cold. Granted, I wasn't the target audience. But I was so glad when he outgrew Thomas and moved on to Scooby-Doo. |
My son still loves Thomas. I only liked it when it's George Carlin doing the narration. Mostly because I keep waiting for him to drop a slew of F bombs.
