Ignorant things politicians say

Election season is in full force and that means they are opening their mouths a lot. That also means they are saying some really ignorant things.

This can be a bipartisan thread...

We'll start with this one:
Rep. Todd Akin, R, Missouri-

First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said.

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2...pregnancy?lite

Pro life or not, surely people know that the female body cannot shut that whole thing down just because it was a rape, right?

DeltaBetaBaby 08-20-2012 12:22 AM

I'm curious what makes a rape "legitimate".

KSig RC 08-20-2012 12:31 AM

Yeahhhh - homeboy's definitely from Missouri, not Iowa.

Also InTrade has him at about 85% to win .... so there's that.

DrPhil 08-20-2012 01:04 AM

I would like to know where he got this idea from.

Oops, sorry. I'll fix that. I don't know where I got Iowa from.

There are rumblings that it's from literature provided by one of the SuperPAC-funded fake-science think tanks, as a sort of pseudoscientific end-around to help develop anti-abortion laws. I haven't seen anybody produce the literature yet, though.

DGTess 08-20-2012 08:02 AM

Spoken by one of those misogynistic idiots who don't think marital rape, date rape, acquaintance rape, etc. is "real" rape.

If it's not a total stranger accosting women on the street and violently raping them, it's not "legitimate".

And they wonder why the GOP has lost all credibility.

DrPhil 08-20-2012 08:19 AM

If that is what he believes then he is definitely a misogynist idiot.

I was wondering whether he was talking about that or talking about false rape accusations, in general.

I think "false allegations" are part and parcel, but as more of a general "women: what WON'T they fake?!" kind of general misogyny than anything. This article from the Atlantic outlines the strategy: it's pretty gross.

Sciencewoman 08-20-2012 10:10 AM

IMO, the dumbest line from that article is this one:

"The reason, Freind said, is that the traumatic experience of rape causes a woman to 'secrete a certain secretion' that tends to kill sperm."

Wow, that's soooooo scientific! Sciencewoman does not like this.

Dixie_Amazon 08-20-2012 11:20 AM

But, but "They" say it is true.

Oh, dear lord. To think of all of the money I spent on birth control. I could have just convinced my sperm killing secreting gland to get to working, and no babies and money in the bank!

KSig RC 08-20-2012 11:57 AM

And just like that, McCaskill's up to 55% to win on InTrade, and Republican leaders are thinking about recalling Akin and running somebody else (since a random suit with an R next to its name would be something like 75% to win MO prior to this).

Fascinating, actually.

Sounds like an excellent plan to this FORMER Republican.

I used to write for a children's tv show, which of course included "stranger danger". One of my coworkers at the time spouted this off as truth almost weekly. I know the psychologist who told it to her, but not from whence it comes. Stupidity, perhaps?

I heard on the news today that they are trying to get him to step down himself but it seems like he's not open to that idea. This will be fun to watch.

DZsis&mom 08-20-2012 04:50 PM

While we are waiting for the next "stupid politician" to open their mouth. I thought it would be fun to remember some of the profoundly stupid quotes of past idiots.

You gotta love Dan Quayle:

"I love California, I practically grew up in Phoenix." — Dan Quayle

SWTXBelle 08-20-2012 06:19 PM

Oh, I'm so glad I can tell my former student who was raped as a (virgin) freshman that OBVIOUSLY all her psychological trauma wasn't real - if it had been a "legitimate" rape she OBVIOUSLY would not have become pregnant. Whew.

AnotherKD 08-20-2012 06:36 PM

It's idiots like this that make a lot of people think that Republicans as a whole are not rational and are complete morons. It's embarrassing. We are not all like this jerkoff, I swear.

Actually, the reason I think my republican friends are a bit irrational in this case isn't because I think they are at all like Akin. I know they aren't. They are great people, actually. What makes them irrational is that they are still going to vote for him, simply because he is republican.

AGDee 08-20-2012 09:41 PM

When I first heard it on the news, I thought "Is he a product of abstinence only sex ed?

My second thought was "Are there people who will believe this is true because he said it?"

I'm not a Republican but I feel bad for you if that's what they think of you.

I am. This little gem of stupidity was not covered in the class. At all.

Then they are just like the Democrat idiots who will vote Democrat regardless of what is being said. They are also like the voters who will vote for one candidate because they do not like the other candidate or the other political party. They are also just like the people who will vote for the candidate who fits a certain demographic (gender, race, social class, religion, region of the country, etc.).

All politicians suck and all politics suck. Research and critique all of it.

Here's a beautifully written letter in response to Mr. Akin's statements:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eve-en...b_1812930.html

Also, I'm embarrassed by the fact that he's from my adopted home state.

ASUADPi 08-21-2012 06:27 PM

I hate to say this, and no offense to those from Missouri, but when my mom told me what bonehead said and she mentioned he is from Missouri I said "that explains everything".

He's just a moron. Rape is rape is rape. End of discussion. period.

I got a :p face when I heard how vehemently his opponent, Claire McCaskill, was defending Akin and his "apology" today. Sure, I bet she would LOVE to have him insist on staying in the race and who could blame her!

What an IDIOT Akin is. He is only sorry that he opened his stupid mouth and let his true beliefs spill out. Wonder how long he will last with the RNC pulling their funding. I bet even his mother is pissed off at him.

There was a post on FB telling people to donate 10 bucks to her campaign in response to Akin's stupidity. I said I'm not gonna blindly support "the other guy"--I need to read up on her first and make sure she's not worse!

Even if she was awful (I'm sure she's not), she pretty much has this race on lock now.

From the Michelangelo Signorile show on SiriusXM OutQ earlier this year

Republican State Senator from Tennessee, Stacey Campfield

"Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community -- it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, if I recall. My understanding is that it is virtually, not completely, but virtually impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex."

HQWest 08-22-2012 11:27 AM

LA times just did an article on this -
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics...2.photogallery

Still - worst one of all times had to be Clayton Williams (R) when he ran against Ann Richards for governor (circa 1990). (on seeing a beautiful sunset)" Rape is like a Sunset - you cant do anything about it - so you might as well lay back and enjoy it."
