Recruitment
Recruitment is getting close for my daughter. The outfits are selected and pictures taken for her to use. We move into the dorm in just a few days. She is very excited to find out where her new home will be. She is a legacy to one house and has recs to all others, even thought we are told that they are not needed at her school. I will post her story once she has begun. Good luck to all who are on pins and needles as I type.
|
Can't wait to read it! Good luck to you both. :)
|
Orientation is coming up. She is very nervous. Already hearing gossip about top houses in the dorms
|
Good luck to you both.
|
Orientation and the first day of parties went well. Very hard to choose when the time came to vote. I am keeping notes and will write her story when recruitment is over.
By the way... After I spent a lot of time explaining that she is not "dropping" groups, but ranking them in the order that she liked them and would like to return (after the top group), her RC told the group that they could drop 2. Frustrating. |
Arrrgh!!! How can the PNMs change their way of thinking if the recruitment counselors tell them that?
|
D is toward the end of her recruitement, so I thought I would begin to post her story. Throughout recruitment, I have continued to remind my D that it only takes on house, and that she needs to follow her heart regardless of what others are saying. This is very hard for an 18 year old.
The day began with D meeting her Rho Gamma group at 8:00 a.m. to receive their schedules. My daughter had one party and then a four hour break. Wow. Pitcher: She was so excited to see what "rush" was all about. She "loved" this house and wanted to know how they knew so much about her. I reminded her that she had a recommendation to this house. First Base: Really liked this house as well. She spoke to a girl with her same major. She said the girl she spoke with liked this house as she could go downstairs and "chill" without makeup. Second Base:She was not in love with this house. she was not sure why. She liked them, but they did not "wow" her. Third Base: She loved this one as well. This is known as a "popular" house and she did not know if she would really fit in. Catcher: This is her legacy house. She was head over heels for this house. She definitely saw herself being friends with these girls. She was double rushed at this house which was her only concern. Right Field: She also "loved" this house Left Field: This was a long walk from the last party. She liked this house but did not feel that she would fit in. Center Field: She knows a few girls in this house from high school. She saw them and waived. This is a more diverse house and she felt very comfortable. Between Party 8 and 9 she texted to say that she was going to rank 9 lowest. When asked how she knew as she had not been there yet, she said that she knew she would not fit it. It was all popular girls. I told her to wait and see. Designated Hitter: text said, "Mom, I've got to keep Designated HItter, I felt the connection. She said she also looked around and saw others like her. On the way to vote, she was able to chat a little. Her main concerns were that she loved her legacy chapter and many other girls wanted to drop them. I told her to go with her comfort and not the comfort of others. She also wanted to make sure that her top (unranked) choices had a mix of reach and "safety." How do you explain that during recruitment there is not safety? She ultimately ranked them: In no specific order: Right Field Catcher Center Field 1st Base Designated Hitter Pitcher 3rd Base ___ Left Field 2nd Base |
I LOVE baseball. This is a darling theme!!!
|
I think it is funny that DDs ranking list came out very much like a typical batting order. (and that left field is aways from the other chapters...)
:P |
I laughed when I read that left field was a long walk from the rest of the chapters.

Round 2
D went to meet her group anxious about receiving her invites for round 2. After waiting she received her invites and it was not what she was expecting. 4 houses. Center Field, Designated Hitter, 2nd Base, and Catcher. She was very excited about Designated Hitter, but very disappointed about the others Through tears we had a chat about going in with an open mind today. . Take a fresh look at these four as they are the ones who want you. Designated Hitter: She is in heaven with this house. She still can not figure out why she was invited back here. She saw the house and then did a craft for their Philanthropy. She was excited as our family is involved with this group. She thinks it went well. Center Field: She believes that this is more of a realistic house for her. She really enjoyed seeing the house and doing the craft. She said that she tried to make conversation, but felt that it seemed like the girls she spoke to were not interested in her. 2nd Base: She really did not want to go to this party. She did not like this house. I told her to go in with an open mind and meet new people. I spoke to her after the party. She said that she liked it a little better but could not get it out of her mind that people felt that this was the "lowest house." She sid the first girl she spoke to was ehh, but she liked the second girl. party 4 was the next day She went back to her dorm after this party. She told me that she really wants to be a part of the greek system, even if it is in the lowest house. I asked her whose opinion she was basing it on? I reminded her that she had to look at where she is comfortable and in houses of more than 150 have all types of girls. I also shared that all houses have the same types of activities and experiences. Catcher: (Next day) Once again, her legacy chapter. She texted me after this party with four smiley faces. When I finally spoke to her she said that she just feels like she is home at this house. The girls are so down to earth and she feels like she could be herself here. She thought it was funny that each time she was bumped, they would say, "This is X and she is a legacy." She hopes that she is asked back by this chapter. When she met with her group to vote, she was fairly quick as she did not have any decisions to make. Now we wait. |
(She fixed hers so I edited mine!)
Love the story and I'm rooting for a Catcher ending! |
Thanks. I changed it.

However, when I read the second Catcher entry, I was happy because it sounds like those members really value her legacy status. I'm rooting for Catcher! |
Mom, you are giving your daughter great advice. I know how hard it is to remain unbiased; you are doing a good job!
C'mon, DD. Knock a home run, with your favorite house! |
I know we hate long drawn out stories.
Round 3 I think I was as nervous as she was as the time came to receive her invites for round 3. She texted the #3 and wrote Designated Hitter, 2nd Base, and Catcher. Then a sad face about Center Field.. I texted back with a smiley and said that three wanted her. She was upset but several others around her had big cuts so she said that she was foing to try not to take it personally. Designated Hitter was first. She just loved Designated Hitter, but shared that she believed she loved the idea of being a Designated Hitter, but it not be where she belongs. Wow, I am glad that she was able to realize this and see through the gossip. 2nd Base was second. She liked this house a bit more, but was having a hard time putting aside the gossip on this one. She enjoyed talking to one of the girls as she was the same major. She gave her hints about one of the classes she is taking and made recommendations for the coming semester. She watched the skit and thought it was a bit goofey. I shared that all skits tend to be goofey. Catcher: She once again really liked this house and felt that this was where she really belonged. She had good conversations, but was double rushed. She said that she tried to be an active part of the conversation, as she wanted them to get to know her. (As a mom, I wondered what it meant that she was being double rushed. Were they no longer interested in her?) On her way to voting she called. She was very nervous that she would be dropped by all of the houses. She shared that several of her friends had hard cuts today. One girl on her floor had been dropped by everyone. I once again told her that it only takes one and to wait and see. I knew it was going to be a rough night. On a side note, she was scheduled to receive her preference invites at 4:00 the next day. She has class (with a quiz) until 4:45. She told her Rho Gammas and they said that they would text her. I advised her to see if she could meet them after class so that she could try to do her best on the quiz and not be watching her phone. |
Seriously rooting for catcher!
|
Double rushing usually just means there are more PNMs than members. People shouldn't read anything into that. It's unavoidable for some chapters.
|
Awww, mama, you are giving your girl some great advice and support. I love a legacy story, so...hoping she has a great ending!

Preference
She received a text from her Rho Gamma saying that they could pick up their invites between 12 and 4. *She went at 12 and called hysterical. *She only had 2nd Base for preference. *She wanted to drop out.*She also said that she had a 5:00 party which she could not make because of class. **She was most upset about being dropped by her legacy chapter. * *Once she returned to her room, we chatted. *She told me that she did not want to go to the party as "no one else" had this chapter and she would be*embarrassed*to wear the letters. *I reminded her that it only takes one house, and once again to ignore the gossip and look at what was best for her. *She agreed to go to the party and decide after that. *Right before leaving for class, she heard from her Rho Gamma who had coordinated a switch and her party was now at 10:20. * We chatted a bit throughout the afternoon, and she seemed in a better place when she left for class. *She called about 8:00 to tell me that one other girl on her hall only had Second base and that a girl down the hall had gone there and had really liked it. *I told her once again, to give it her best shot. * She left her dorm about 9:50 to walk to the chapter house. *While enroute, she called me in a panic. *It seemed like masses of girls were walking toward the campus and she had received a text from her Rho Gamma saying that voting would begin at 10:15. *She was worried that she had read her email wrong and had missed the party. *She finally got a hold of her Rho Gamma who said that the voting was for people who did not have a last party and she was fine. *Those few moments between her first phone call and the confirmation from her RG were deadly. * D called me after the party. *She had really liked the ceremony and even had chills. *She was worried though, as she did not connect with the girl who preffered her. *(She wondered if the girl who was originally assigned to her was at the first party where she was suppose to be). *She said that the girl who preffed her told her that when she went through preference, her bid card was lost. *She received a call not to go to the meeting place as she had not*received*a bid. *Her bid card was found later that night. *Well, that was all my daughter had to hear. *Despite really liking the party, she was so worried that she would not receive a bid. *She signed her bid card and worried all night and into the next day. *I was careful not to call her as I knew she would panic if her phone rang. *She was scheduled to pick up her bid card at 5:00. At 4:55 my older daughter called me and said, "Mom, I think we can breathe now"). I waited on pins and needles to hear from my daughter. *I finally got a phone call where she yelled, "Mom, XXX (her room mate) and I are both Second Bases. *She was so excited. *Later that evening she called to tell me that she had made the best decision of her life and could not see herself anywhere else. She was frustrated that she had let herself listen to the "tent talk." * She loves her New Member class and her Bid Day Sis. * I am happy to share that she is now a very excited member of: Alpha Chi Omega |
Good for her! Congrats to your daughter and AXO! Another good example of how it only takes one.
|
Aw, that's awesome! I'm so glad she fell in love with her new chapter! Congrats!
|
31 years ago I too signed my bid card for Alpha Chi Omega. I have never looked back. I can truly say that I would not be half the woman I am today had it not been for Alpha Chi Omega. I only hope your daughter has as good experience as I have had. I'm almost 50 years old and have been an Advisor for over 20 years and now work at a national level for the fraternity. It is an unbelievable organization with some of the BEST women I have EVER had the pleasure to meet. Congratulations to your daughter!
|
Congratulations to your daughter and Alpha Chi Omega :-) I love baseball; this was a terrific, well-told story. You did great, Mom!!!
|
Great ending!!!!! How nice for a roommate pair. Yay! :)

Thanks for sharing your daughter's story, and congratulations to her and Alpha Chi Omega!
I do have one question, though- first your daughter said that "nobody else" was going there for pref, and then later she found a few other girls on her floors who were, and then on bid day she and her roommate were both Alpha Chis. Did she not know her roommate was also preffing there? Or did the roommate not go there for pref, but receive a snap bid or something? |
Yay for DD and for AXO!!!
|
Congrats to your daughter!:)
|
I was trying very hard just to lurk this week and not post anything since it is my daughter's recruitment week, but this recruitment story was so good that I couldn't help it. :)
I love hearing stories like this, it's real and it's great! Thanks for taking the time to share it. Congratulations to your daughter! |
My best friend and her daughter, my God daughter, are Alpha Chi Omegas. Beautiful organization with a wonderful history. Love the badge, too, but then I am a badge junkie. Congrats!! Now you have another sorority to love in your family!
|
Great story! Congrats to your D..
|
This AXO is happy to read your story. My daughter also recently finished recruitment, and I felt the worry of your story! Congrats to her and to roomy!
