Outfit Advice

Just looking for some advice on outfits I want to wear for recruitment.

I want to wear this one for House Tours (Round 1):

I want this one for Philanthropy Night (Round 2):

Something kinda like this (with white polka dots) for Skit Night (Round 3):

Something similar to this (without the ruffles) for Preference (Round 4):

What do you guys think?

gee_ess 08-11-2012 07:36 PM

Which region of the country are you in?

Titchou 08-11-2012 07:52 PM

Pref dress might be a little short...well, a lot short actually.

summer_gphib 08-11-2012 09:14 PM

It might just be me, and my style but the first dress looks like a hippy nightmare. The yellow one is the only one I even like. Sorry, just giving my opinion.

DarlingTexan 08-11-2012 11:01 PM

Nobody is going to able to answer this correctly unless you tell us what region you're in!

This. It's like the same dress every night in a different color, with just a slight detail change somewhere on it. I'm not even sure I like the yellow one, but it's great compared to the others. Wow - I'm harsh. Sorry.

Legit question - are you trying to hide your figure? All these look loose and baggy/ frumpy-ish to me.

SoCalGirl 08-12-2012 01:17 AM

Judging by what I've seen in stores lately, these are on trend.

simply_stacey 08-12-2012 03:10 AM

I'm in the west.
But the first one is actually really cute. Doesn't look anything like the picture.
And I'm only 5'1" so all the dresses hit my knee or just below.
They're really not as frumpy as they look. I just didn't want anything too tight or restricting. I personally like loose fitting clothes to move around in.

AXOrushadvisor 08-12-2012 09:25 AM

So if your in the west the first day is usually VERY casual, but not knowing your school it might be ok. Shorts are usually what is on the menu out here. I think your Pref dress is a little on the casual side even for the west. The yellow dress almost looks dressier then the pref dress IMO.

Did your Pan give you guidelines or did they post pictures or a booklet? I would follow that and you should be ok.

simply_stacey 08-12-2012 12:59 PM

Well for the Orientation Day where we meet our Rho Gammas I was planning on wearing shorts and a nice-ish top.
This is the top I plan on wearing with some jean shorts and a brown belt:
http://i46.tinypic.com/25at352.jpg

I guess by the plaid you can kinda tell where in the west I am. Haha.

I wish they had given us some guidelines! That would have made this so much easier. But, alas, we're on our own.

Titchou 08-12-2012 01:10 PM

No...just no. You are going to recruitment not the rodeo..no matter where you are, it's not appropriate unless everyone is supposed to dress western.

That being said, after all the additional info you've given, the first dress isn't a good choice. At 5'1" that long tail in the back is going to look like the hem came out on you. Nope...not that one.

simply_stacey 08-12-2012 01:28 PM

Okay. So scratching the Orientation shirt. Back to the drawing board.
Actually the first dress isn't as tiered as it looks. It's very subtle and the back hits just below the knee while the front is at the knee.
I wish the pictures did all these dresses justice. Because based off these pictures I would not be wearing any of the dresses. Haha.

AXOrushadvisor 08-12-2012 01:30 PM

By first day I mean house tours. Usually girls are in cut offs and rainbows. I would google your school + recruitment and see if any images come up. Depending on where you are it could be super hot and with jeans and a long sleeve shirt you might be a for real hot mess.

This, by far, may be the FUGLIEST thing I have ever seen. Please, please, please do not wear it. And I grew up in the 80's/90's. And I remember them. Plaid can be awesome. But there just aren't words for this. After all these bad clothing choices I'm beginning to think you've either A. Never seen a fashion magazine or B. you are attempting to punk GC.

simply_stacey 08-12-2012 02:20 PM

Dang! Harsh! Haha. It does look pretty nasty in the picture. I wouldn't buy it either if I just saw this. I guess that's why online shopping sucks. Everything is better in person. And, no, I don't normally read fashion magazines. I like to do my own thing. But, after all the negative comments about this top, I will definitely be choosing something else. Maybe a shirt that I have that everyone says makes my green eyes pop? I'm feeling good about that one.
Thanks for the advice so far everyone!

My daughter and I went shopping yesterday and these are 3 pieces she found at the summer-end sidewalk sales at White House Black Market. They have wonderful, well-made dresses and the current sale prices are fantastic. The last dress is two layers and it looks/feels very expensive. The first dress was 75% off. I wasn't familiar with this store before yesterday, but I would highly recommend their website: www.whbm.com. You might want to check it out....there are many dresses.

Also, check out Talbot's...they're also having end of summer 75% off sales, and they have many petite dresses. My daughter found a few things there, too, and was sad that a couple of the petite dresses were too short-waisted for her.

simply_stacey 08-12-2012 02:37 PM

My mom loves WHBM but it's SUPER expensive and I probably wouldn't wear the dresses again. Also, I'm trying to stay away from strapless because I don't want to be pulling it up every 5 seconds or have a messy wardrobe malfunction.

Sciencewoman 08-12-2012 02:43 PM

I agree with you that the most important thing is to feel comfortable with what you're wearing. If you join a sorority, there will be formals and you will need a few party dresses. You may want to keep that in mind, because there's a good chance you could wear the dresses again to "dress up" events.

gee_ess 08-12-2012 02:45 PM

Simply_stacey - remember, this is college, and Greek life. You will, believe it or not, have an opportunity to wear some of those dresses again. Additionally, sometimes you just have to shop without that caveat in mind. This is like an interview. First impressions matter.

I liked your yellow dress and the blue one. The blue one needs some accessorizing for pref.

Whoever suggested that you google some ideas for what happens at your school was smart. Other than that, do you know anyone you can ask? Specifically, I would want to know if first round (open parties) is casual shorts/chacos or casual shorts/capris/sandals or casual summerdress/sandals.

TONS of stuff on sale right now. I just spent some time on Gap.com and came away with white jeans and some new tops at 40% off. (sale ends today)

simply_stacey 08-12-2012 02:56 PM

I have spent quite a bit on the dresses pictured and they are dresses I will definitely wear again next spring/summer. I don't really do fancy. I mean there are dresses i have from prom and graduation that might work, but they are all strapless (which I really don't want).

I did try to google some pictures but most of them are from Bid Day and that's really casual. I don't know anyone in Greek Life at the school I'm going to, so I'm kind of at a loss here.

P.S. I love love love summer sales!

simply_stacey 08-12-2012 03:06 PM

This is actually my senior prom dress that I got from WHBM. Maybe this could work for pref? And then use the others at different times?

These are FANTASTIC!!! I love, love, love the skirt with the ribbon belt. All three are timeless!! A well structured classically cut dress is never a bad investment!

This one is actually very cute. Depends on where you are going to school, on whether or not it's fancy enough for pref, but it should definitely be in your repertoire. Think-- classic cuts and structure. Things that can be worn five years from now and are still timelessly beautiful.

If the fact it's sleeveless is an issue, you can pick up a cute black shrug or even a brightly colored one with matching shoes-- red, pink, silver... etc., but only if it doesn't take away from the waistline and cut of the dress.

And about the dresses you've spent a lot of money on-- you could always return them.

gee_ess 08-12-2012 03:41 PM

I like your prom dress for pref. It is simply but dressy.

You might consider backing your black, yellow and blue dress back a night. Black for round one (what is the fabric?), Yellow dress for round 2, blue for round 3. I think your black scoop dress could be played off pretty casual depending on your shoes and accessories. Keep it simple, simple, simple!

I know everyone has warned about strapless but unless you are really busty, or if the dress is too big and falls easily, I think you can be comfortable in strapless. Pref does not call for dancing or other spirited moves that can cause the dress to slip. Just make sure it is altered to FIT.

simply_stacey 08-12-2012 04:03 PM

Thanks gee_ess! That's exactly what I was thinking!
The black one is just a cotton dress. I was thinking of wearing black sandals with it and some fun earrings, since it has some colorful feathers as the pattern.
I'm thinking of silver sandals with the yellow dress and plain silver earrings since the dress is pretty loud by itself.
The blue one I want to wear the same silver sandals with a lot (but not too much) silver jewelry.
And I am kind of busty but I'll make it work. I was thinking of pearl earrings and a pearl necklace with black heels for pref.

FSUZeta 08-12-2012 06:20 PM

The changes you are suggesting for your recruitment wardrobe are great! Love using your Prom dress for Prefs. We usually don't tell PNMs to do that, but yours would work.

Sciencewoman 08-12-2012 06:58 PM

^^^ I concur. WHBM sells that black pouffy flower sash separately from your dress...they had them in a basket in the fitting rooms area. The sales clerk tied one around the waist of the polka dot dress while my daughter was trying it on. It looked really cute...so we got it. I didn't even realize it came with a belt until later, so we really didn't need it (thanks, sales clerk!), but I have to admit that the flower sash is cuter.

gee_ess 08-12-2012 07:00 PM

I would keep the earrings simple for the black cotton dress. Maybe just some studs and not anything that suggests there is a 'theme' to the outfit. This is supposed to be your most casual day so play down the extras.

Everything else sounds good! When is rush?

simply_stacey 08-12-2012 07:30 PM

Alright. Thanks for all the advice! I'm super excited now! Rush starts on August 27th

Love the prom dress and the 3 western schools that I'm familiar with this would work. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

simply_stacey 08-13-2012 08:48 PM

So I was thinking about it and I want to switch the blue dress with the yellow one. I'd do blue for Philanthropy and yellow for Skits. I just think the yellow is more fun for something like Skit Night. Yes? No?

gee_ess 08-13-2012 09:13 PM

The yellow is fun. I think either is fine. You said that the blue was simpler, no ruffle, right?

simply_stacey 08-14-2012 12:07 AM

Yeah. So it's a little more toned down.

gee_ess 08-14-2012 08:22 AM

I think it will be fine based on what I know of your outfits. Another thing you can do is poll your roommates or hallmates at the dorm during the week and see which they think you should wear for either round.

simply_stacey 08-14-2012 03:15 PM

I wish I could do that! It'd be so much easier. But I'm living in my own apartment off campus so there's really no one to ask.
