Recruitment Outfits?

Hi everyone! I've been a silent lurker on GC for a while, and just today I decided to ask a few questions about outfits! Though I know outfits differ from school to school, but I want to keep my location anonymous. The only thing I will say, however, is my schools suggestions for outfits are pretty much the same as every other school with a large greek life! (Sorry for the vague description :p)

Anywhoo, I've been putting some outfits together. Some of my clothing I could not find on polyvore, so I'll just give an overal description.
For Day 1 (House Tours): I was planning on wearing this dress
http://www.oceanpalm.net/thumbnail.a...axx=150&maxy=0 (I'd just like to add that the dress is not as baggy as it appears, but it's the only picture I could find)

Day 2+3 (Philanthropy night): I don't have images of these, but both nights I was planning on wearing Lilly skirts and a coordinating top with flats.

Day 4 (Pref Night): http://resources.shopstyle.com/sim/f...olby-dress.jpg with wedges. I'm mostly concerned this isn't dressy enough.. any thoughts?

Oh, and I'm so sorry there are a billion other threads just like mine! And yes, I do rather like Lilly ;) So thanks so much for reading!

ETA: Thanks for all the help guys!

FSUZeta 07-22-2012 10:11 PM

Pref. dress is not dressy enough. You need to shoot fro something classy that you would wear to a fancy wedding.

Yes this ^ and maybe a dress that is a tad bit longer.

Sciencewoman 07-22-2012 10:39 PM

^^^ and probably a dressier shoe than wedges.

The other days sound cute!

I really like the first dress for first round, but I agree that the pref dress is not as dressy as what the girls here wear.

cr2817 07-22-2012 10:43 PM

Alright, thank you for all of your input! Your advice is greatly appreciated :)

For pref night, could anyone maybe send me some links for suggestions? I have a very hard time finding dresses because I am rather 'busty' on top compared to the rest of my body. In other words, I need a classy dress that will fit my whole body properly!

Edit: I also have another dress that I'm unsure if it's formal enough or not (The reason for these questions is some people told me the dresses are appropriate, others disagreed) I could not copy the image of the dress for some reason, but it is 'Sandra Darren Petite Jacquard Chain Waist Dress'. It comes down to the knees, but I'm a bit wary of wearing white to pref night.

Sciencewoman 07-22-2012 10:51 PM

Try the cocktail dresses on www.anntaylor.com. If you are busty, I would stay away from anything strapless, and watch out for cleavage. Try a good minimizer bra if needed, so that you have excellent support and appear more proportional. Maybe a color block dress with a darker color on top, if you can find one that looks classy?

I also think that v-necks are good, because the draw the eye up, as long as it doesn't show cleavage. Did you ever see Bridget Jones's Diary? Renee Zellweger put on about 20 lbs. to play that role (all in the bust, apparently). She wears a black v-neck dress at an anniversary party, and it looks great.

Maybe something like this? I cant tell
It might be to short?

The 5'1" girl reviewing it says it hits above her knee, so it should be fine.

Sciencewoman 07-23-2012 12:00 AM

That is a cute dress, but...

1) You can't wear a strapped bra with it, and a strapless bra has major issues when it comes to gravity, for the well-endowed.

2) the pleated nature would accentuate a bust line.

This dress is really cute! However, I'm 5'7 so this dress might be a little short on me. Plus I saw a review from a girl who's smaller bust-wise then me, who said the dress only made her look bigger! Thank you so much for your suggestion though, I will keep it in mind!

Also, I plan on going to Ann Taylor today- I saw a lot of cute dresses there! Thank you for that suggestion Sciencewoman!

I would think all the extra pleating on that dress would add 15 pounds to you, unless it's exceptionally well made. And if you're 5'7" and it's above the knee on someone who's 5'1", it's going to be too short for you. For recruitment, it's almost always better to err on the side of too conservative. You're dressing to impress women, not men!

Shellfish 07-23-2012 09:39 AM

What about this one? (Or is it too conservative?)
http://us.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/sto...olor%7B1%7D%7E[pink]&noOfRefinements=1

cr2817 07-23-2012 09:42 AM

Would something like this work?
http://www.anntaylor.com/ann/product...aultColor=6600

I'm assuming that the model is taller then I am, so it will probably hit me at the knee. However, again, I'm not sure if this is formal/conservative enough! Sorry for all the questions and like I said, I greatly appreciate all the help!

Or possibly http://www.anntaylor.com/ann/product...aultColor=6600?

Sciencewoman 07-23-2012 09:45 AM

I like both of those dresses. The black one will need some beautiful jewelry...either pearls or maybe a "statement" necklace or bracelet?

That dress is adorable! However, I am unsure if it would work for pref/someone with a larger bust (I have so far been unsuccessful with dresses with the peplum design) Any other thoughts?

DeltaBetaBaby 07-23-2012 10:32 AM

You probably don't want to rent, but just to give an idea of some styles, because I think we have a similar body type:

http://www.renttherunway.com/shop/de...daisylacedress

http://www.renttherunway.com/shop/de...meetsgirldress

http://www.renttherunway.com/shop/de...firstladydress

The color is all wrong on the last one, though.

ETA: You said "big Greek school", but there is a big difference between SEC and Cornell, for example, even though both have big Greek systems, so I would like to be clear that I am a Big 10er, and you should feel free to ignore my advice accordingly.

FSUZeta 07-23-2012 10:41 AM

Oh my goodness, I absolutely love the daisy lace dress DBBaby. The other two dresses are nice too. Have you ever actually rented a dress from them?

OP, of the two Ann Taylor dresses that you linked, I like the 2nd one better, but that is just a personal taste-they are both nice. i do know that bustier women often look bustier in dresses of that style. It would be great if you could try them on. As Sciencewoman suggested, a V-neck dress that does not show too much cleavage. Think a wrap or faux wrap dress similar to this:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/suzi-chin-for-maggy-boutique-ruched-faux-wrap-dress/3036369?cm_cat=datafeed&cm_ite=suzi_chin_for_maggy _boutique_ruched_faux_wrap_dress:265875&cm_pla=dre sses:women:dress&cm_ven=Google_Product_Ads&mr:ad=2 0584802393&mr:adType=pla&mr:keyword={keyword}&mr:r eferralID=NA&mr:trackingCode=6BA06A6D-1968-DF11-9DA0-002219319097&origin=pla

HQWest 07-23-2012 10:49 AM

I agree with FSUZeta - I like the second black one. The first one - the zippers make it look too casual, and it is WOOL.

I don't know who started the whole peplum craze, but it only looks good on really thin girls.

cr2817 07-23-2012 10:50 AM

DeltaBetaBaby- As FSUZeta said, I adore the lace dress! I'm going to look for similar, if not the same, dress to buy. Also, as to the 'Big Greek School', I know my comment is pretty ambiguous, and I'm so sorry about that! Though Greek Life is not HUGE at my school, the suggested outfits seem to coordinate pretty well with the SEC schools. If it would be easier, I can post the exact tips from my Panhellenic website. (Changed up a bit so they continue to keep my schools identity hidden :) )

FSUZeta- That dress is very cute as well! Though I agree with you and Sciencewomen about the V-neck for bustier woman, I am (unfortunately) at a size that any V-neck can look a bit scandalous. Either way, though, I am going to the mall today and hope to try on both of the Ann Taylor dresses. I'll also stop by Nordstrom and see if the dress you posted is at my mall/will fit me appropriately.

ETA: HQWest- My recruitment is the beginning of September so I don't want to be burning! Thanks for pointing that out. I also agree with what you said about the zippers- I was a little bit on the fence about them.

i know what you mean about the peplums. I can't help but think about "The Jetsons" when i see a dress with peplums.

Good luck finding a dress cr2817.

Yeah, I rented this one for a friend's wedding and got a ton of compliments:

http://www.renttherunway.com/shop/de...uarenecksheath

One thing I really like about them is that they usually tell you the model's height in the item description, so I get a good idea of whether things will be long enough for me. Also, they send you two sizes + fashion tape and safety pins to be on the safe side.

ETA: RTR is running a coupon code right now for $25 off a rental: MIDSUMMERSALE, and if anyone decides to use it, please PM me so I can give you a referral link that will get you $20 off.

Good luck finding a dress cr2817.

Didn't most dresses in the mid-1980s have peplums? I remember seeing a lot of dresses with peplums on Dynasty and The Golden Girls.

FYI: That style looks terrible on anyone with even the slightest indication of having hips (present company included).

Sciencewoman 07-23-2012 11:55 AM

cr2817, good luck finding a great dress!

Also, I would strongly suggest checking out Wacoal bras. They are expensive, but they are soooooo worth it for the well-endowed among us. I switched to them a few years ago...someone told me that Oprah was promoting them, and the bra consultant at Macy's recommended them. They make a minimizer that is absolutely fantastic.

It's tropical wool, which is thinner and breathable. It's used in office/business wear and meant for a variety if temperatures.

You are correct. Peplums were a style in the '80s (to which I did not succumb), but not all dresses had them.

HQWest 07-23-2012 01:51 PM

yeah - peplums always make me think of this

http://s.ecrater.com/stores/227116/4...b8_227116n.jpg

even if the modern peplum is

http://imagemaven.files.wordpress.co...um-dresses.jpg

I really like the red one - but wouldn't you have to be super skinny (like the model) to look right?
I can understand the 1940s version -
http://bessgeorgette.com/wp-content/...peplums_02.jpg
but wasn't an 8 then a 4 now?

I do like the vintage 50s Dior version

I took a little virtual shopping trip and these are the dresses I saw that I thought were appropriate for Preference. In most cases black isn't necessary, but many choose to wear it because you will get a lot of use out of it. But I always love to see PNMs wearing colors. Darker solids or subtle prints work best IMHO.

honeychile 07-23-2012 04:04 PM

^^I like most of them, but the red polka dot one looks a little Minnie Mouse-ish! I'd give that a pass.

Love the cobalt blue one!

HQWest 07-23-2012 04:12 PM

A lot of the prints would be too much here. The solids are always classic and I love some of the color blocking if you can pull off the stripes.

My mom remembered them from the 1940s.

Mom always told me to stay away from peplums - we chunky girls don't need the extra fabric around our middles!!

Unfortunately, my shopping trip got pushed back a day! I'll be trying on many outfits that have been suggested tomorrow, however. :)

I realized just now that I completely forgot about skit day!! Any suggestions?

AUAZD2001 07-24-2012 04:35 AM

The dress for Skit Day is usually slightly less formal than for Preference. Lighter fabrics and brighter colors are appropriate for this day.

IndianaSigKap 07-25-2012 12:05 AM

I am obsessed with dresses right now. You found some great ones ^^ Wish the images were larger, so I could see the details. Any way to make the images larger?

Can you pretty please find some Gamma Phi dresses that don't look like bluck? Hot pink ore even light pink with the brown and mode would be more accurate than the russet type colors. Please? :)
